Title: Forum spaz
Post by: Barry Scott on Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 14:03:40
I noticed the forum was down earlier and have sorted it.

However, in an effort to make it run better I'm trialling something in the back end over the next 48 hours, so if there are any problems, downtime or notifications, please post them here. (I expect there are likely to be some issues.)

With any luck they'll be few and far between and the end result will be a quicker and more stable site. I hope. :)

Cheers.

Thanks, that one's been sorted and prompted me to add some security and tighten shit up. That error was registered over 3,700 times from about 13:30! :D

You must be doing a good job. If my router's firewall logs are anything to go by, in comparison you must get a lot of attempts on the site.

Most of mine appear to be from China and Russia, I can't start to imagine how many attacks the TEF must get.

What does "trialling something in the back end" mean? I'm not used to IT speak.

I took it as being more Richard Gere than IT.

Security wise I do very, very little. The server is fully managed so it kind of takes care of itself. The only thing I've done, server wise, is install suPHP, which I now see as compulsory and later learned my host now installs by default. I plan to get us on nginx and install FastCGI, but the server copes fine as things stand so there's no rush there.

I also added a spam mod in the forum which dropped spam and malicious shit by about 90%. Today I added CloudFlare (as I saw huge improvements on another site) and it also adds a nice layer of security.

What does "trialling something in the back end" mean? I'm not used to IT speak.

Testing something that wouldn't be noticed by your average user within the visible areas of the site. It's essentially something hidden behind the scenes making things work smoother - or at least that's the hope.

Likewise, someone with a Korean IP attempted an SSH attack on my NAS the other day. It's probably just botnets.

Yeah I doubt very much they are specific targetted attacks, they seem to be originating from Universities and institutions etc

i have noticed that as i scroll down it takes me back to the top of the page as get i get to a new post. So as i read post 3 it scrolls back to the top automatically, i then scroll down to post 4 & it goes back up to the top of the page before i can get to post 5 & so on. It is only doing it on this site, i have tried on other sites & it is fine.

Most of mine appear to be from China and Russia, I can't start to imagine how many attacks the TEF must get.

I had a meeting in the head office of a rather large computer internet security company (the yellow one) and in the meeting room they had a threatcon level and showed which country was hacking each other the most and which viruses are about to take over the world... quite interesting to watch....more so than my meeting!

The US, Russia, China & Korea seemed to be battling it out for top spot in the hacking stakes

Perhaps it's just me, but has the forum seemed quite good the last few days?

I hoped to be on a new server by tomorrow morning - I planned to move tonight in time for the first game - but this side of me not sleeping tonight, or not sitting on the sofa and watching tv for the next few hours, it's not going to happen.

I don't want to do it tomorrow morning, hours before a game, in case shit doesn't work, so we'll hopefully have a new fast as fuck server in a few days.

Not sure what's wrong with tapatalk, it's something to do with not being able to decompress, compressed HTTP requests. Well, nothing's changed, so I'm a bit flummoxed, because I can't get on either. Clearly some come can, which seems puzzling.

I'm unable to access anything from my laptop, to sort the problem, until after 23:00 due to a block I stupidly applied. (To stop me doing a Fred/Pumbaa.)

Cheers Paul. Somebody just turned the magic back on (at least for now)

That must have been a good 10 hours or so that it didn't work at all. Nothing

Internet is a tad sparse in this neck of the woods.

Anybody else been getting capthca requests?

Do you have a static IP? If you do I can white list it, but it could be because there's a lot of similar IPs spamming currently.

CloudFlare wouldn't let me on without captcha for some reason, I had to white list myself. Didn't stop other sites throwing up a captcha though!

Do you have a static IP?

Yeah

It's understandable though that hosts may consider a Thai ISP address dodgy.

You're on the whitelist now, so you won't get anymore captchas.
