depends what OS you are running?
When i had a WinMo 3.5 i had a mobile version of nod32 but only as a precaution.
I've had an Iphone for a couple years and never bothered putting AV on it.
If its available and free then there is no harm in having it on.

Just stuck Avast on my Galaxy S2 having read about some Trojans being uploaded to the Market under the guise of apps. Better to try to be safe than sorry I guess

if you've an android or an iPhone PREY have just released it's mobile protection. Whilst it's not a virus protection it is a theft protection.

Also available for laptops etc too. excellent piece of kit

I carry my phone around in a condom.  If you get an ultra thin one you can still use the phone while its on.  Better be safe than sorry.

No it's not necessary, it'll just slow your phone down. Don't install dodgy apps and you'll have nothing to worry about. Even then an app is pretty restricted as to what it can do, it won't be able to corrupt the phone's system for example.
