Have you unticked the 'work offline' option in the tools menu on your web browser?

Whe you say connect, I assume you just mean you get the "connected" status bars. Have you actually managed to log on to the routers configuration page for example?

The most likely causes are 1) wireless security setting issue 2) Laptop wireless left in unusual configuration.

Lets address 2 first, as its easyish to check. When connected to wireless router:

1. click on the Windows (start) button

2. In the box that says "start search", type cmd.exe and press return

3. In the "dos box" that opens type "cmd.exe"

4. type ipconfig.exe /all

Post back what it puts out.

Depending on the result we'll check that the laptop is set to get an IP address via DHCP next (that's dead easy too)

You need to put the /all after ipconfig like:

ipconfig /all

(the .exe doesn't matter)

Title: Re: Laptop wireless connection help request

tried it again and got this message....
inconfig.exe is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable programme or batch file.

That's because it's ipconfig, not inconfig ;)

Title: Re: Laptop wireless connection help request

OK so it has and IP address that looks good. This means that the router and the laptop are talking to each other to some degree. Can you just do "ipconfig /all" and check there is a DNS addres, it will look like:

 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.102

but with a diffrent value (either 192.168.1.1 or a real address, but not 10.x.x.x or 169.x.x.x - that's bad)
------------------------------------------------------------
Now we need to work out whether the issue is wireless connectivity (interference), or something else.

1. Do you have any other wireless devices that work. Its not hard and fast, but if they work it reduces the risk of there being an interferer.

2. Can you talk to the router. Literally type into the web browser everything in between the quotes : "http://192.168.1.1" .

I fucking hate Vista/7. I forget the number of times I've fucked with them and tried to get wireless working across various networks and had issues with public/private and what not. Networking used to be so simple.

DNS looks ok.

If you have a firewall enabled (Window Firewall probably) try disabling it and trying again.

You connected to the router using http://192.168.1.1 ?  Did you definitely have the cable unplugged when you did so? The "ipconfig/all"  had the cable connected!

Anyway there are absolutely no clues that I can see why things are going wrong, but at least we ruled a few out.

Will think of the next step once you confirm http://192.168.1.1 via web browser (without cable).

If using IE  click Tools-Internet Options-Connections-Lan Settings

Make sure the Proxy server box is not ticked

Also log into router and change the wireless channel

My understanding is you're connected to the router but have no internet access yes? (I'm presuming under connections and sharing centre, you have a blue line from your pc to the router, but a red X between the router and the internet.)

What security do you have on the computer?

This might sound silly, but if the above is the state you're in, I've seen this numerous times and the way I some how seem to to solve this ridiculous problem is by deleting the network and trying to connect again from scratch.

Then, bizarrely, it's normally a case of clicking "home" when the box pops up, upon first connecting, that asks whether it's home, work or public. I can't recall the number of times I've seen internet access denied by ignoring/missing that stupid box.

The day I work out how the bloody hell I am supposed to network share a printer connected to an XP machine with a Windows 7 laptop will be a joyous day.

Normally I map a shared folder to the Windows 7 PC, then I map the printer and it seems to work. Any other combo - printer not found.

I've given up trying to understand it!

Indeed. I started a thread on here about a printer share between Vista and 7 'cause it was a fucking nightmare. I recall doing it some cack handed way by adding a printer on a non-existent port, then removing the port or something then re-adding the printer which found the drivers... I don't know, it melts my mind now.

I just remember if you did it the logical way it showed as installed and working, but it couldn't be printed to!

It wont do it entered in the internet page at the top but did via your instructions earlier. I was plugging in the ethernet in between making posts as i couldn't without it.

in the network and sharing page it says this computer====unidentified network====red cross====-internet. Don't get it?
That box doesn't pop up barry? Internet security is microsoft security essentials.

I get an excellent wireless connection but it say limited access and get nothing on a web page. I've tried turning everything on and off, deleting the network and connection and re-entering the wireless password etc.

Bear with me, because in many respects I'm clutching at straws and making random guesses, as I don't have access to a Windows machine (or actually know what I am doing for that matter)! It's just how I somehow manage to solve this problem (at least it sounds the same) with my old man's computer/s!

When you go into network and sharing centre, is the network listed as, public, unidentified network?

Eh? I meant do it in the internet browser address bar (where you normally type "thetownend.com").

At this point I'll let Bazza continue and only jump in if he hits a brick wall (or JJ must have some ideas too!).

I have a wireless issue of my own. I'll hijack this thread after yours is fixed.

Delete the wireless network connection then add it again but set the network location as 'home' like Barry mentioned earlier.

It only offers you the choice when you first connect to the network. That's why you have to delete it and start again.

Well there probably is a way to change it, but its easier to start again...

These links should help, but normally removing the network in full, then scanning and connecting to it solves the problem, but as you can't do that, try below.

Given this as much time as i'm prepared to. I've have gone over and over trying different processes to rid me of this problem and tried all suggestions made on here. Thanks all who offered help but I'm admitting defeat now and my request has now changed.

I only have 2 ethernet outputs from my router and need 3 without having to keep changing them over when using different devices.
Could anyone reccomend a splitting device or do they effect the quality of signal etc?
Cheers, and sorry for being a 4d clone at the moment ;)

Get a switch, something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TP-Link-TL-SF1005D-5-Port-Unmanaged-10-100M-Desktop-Switch-/180769695621?pt=UK_Computing_NetworkSwitches_RL&hash=item2a16b6a785

Plug a single cable from the switch to your router, you then have 6 ethernet sockets ,  the 5 ports on the switch, and the spare port on the router.

Be aware that the switch is powered so will need a free power socket, and that it is roughly the same size as the average router.

Arriba, I think this is what you're trying but just want to check?

Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Manage wireless networks -> Select the wireless network you're trying to connect to and select 'Remove'.

The next time you try to connect to that network, it should prompt you to select whether it's a home, work or public network like in Barry's previous image. Am I right in saying that you're not prompted even after you've removed the network from the list?

And to answer the question - openzone - presumably you are seeing this as an available wireless network? If so this means you or a near neighbour have BT as you internet provider and are signed up to the openzone program. This means a bit of whoevers bandwith is reserved for other openzone customers to use (more useful in a town centre than a residential street in suburbia). If the laptop keeps connecting to this you will not have internet access when you are connected, but you should be redirected to an "openzone login" page on your web browser.

The box you are looking for usually appears after connecting to a network first time. Not sure why it isn't.

If you go into the Network and Sharing Center when connected wirelessly, what does it say under 'View your active networks'?

http://i.imgur.com/0ETxX.jpg

If it's connected, you should be able to click on where the above picture says 'Home network' to change it if necessary.

Sounds like it's not connecting to the correct wifi network then.

If you go back to the 'Manage wireless network' screen, make sure that the preferred network is at the top of the list by selecting it and clicking 'Move up'.

It should then always connect to your preferred network.

Either way, it sounds like the fact that it is showing up as an unidentified network is the reason you aren't getting full access

Get a switch, something like this:

I'd strongly recommend paying a bit extra and getting a gigabit switch rather than a 100m (Fast Ethernet). Won't make any difference to your internet connection speed, but if you transfer files locally they will move a lot quicker.

Or even easier, if your wired connection is working on it then let someone remote in.

Just thinking what about manually setting the wireless IP to something different than the one allocated

Jonny (and anyone else who knows about switches) why/how does a gigabit switch help when a standard HDD only reads/writes at around 50mb/s at a push? Its a genuine question I'm always puzzled by, because to me I could only imagine 1000mb/s being a benefit to an SSD, clustered servers, remote access or a RAID array. Something to do with through put?

doh posted in error :)

But I agree with Barry, you are limited to your hard drive surely, 1000mbps is about 125MB per second and the average hard disk writes at a max speed of about 50MB per second.

Thus it will cause disk saturation.

Network speeds are quoted in bits rather than bytes, but the actual MB transfer rate won't ever be 1/8th of the speed as you've got to allow for the overheads of network data transfer (encoding, error correction and so on). Probably more accurate to go with 1/10th.

So with a 100m network connection you'll only get about 10Mb, which is a fraction of actual hard disk throughput speeds. Plus you could be reading / writing from multiple drives in a raid which could increase the throughput. Also, not all data transfer will involve hard disk access, i.e. if the data is already in memory.

The other factor is the speed of the uplink between switches. If you connect a 5 port switch to the main switch over a 100m uplink, then that 100m will have to be shared across the 5 ports. So if all ports are running at full speed they'll only get 20m each.

Bottom line is that gigabit switches are dirt cheap so there is no real reason to buy anything less. At minimum you want your main switch to have all gigabit ports and the other switches to have at least one gigabit port for the uplink.

Thanks, that makes sense. Also explains why speeds on my gigabit LAN to a server on a 100/10 card are only around 9-10mbs.

Network speeds annoy and confuse the fuck out of me.

I'm on 40Mb (megabits) fibre broadband and can easily max that out at ~4.7MB/sec on a cabled 100Mb ethernet connection from the router to the laptop.

Yet, if I try and transfer a file from my laptop to my NAS it peaks at ~4.3MB/sec, so only around 34Mb on a 100Mb connection.
