Title: Well done Woy
Post by: Flashheart on Sunday, June 24, 2012, 21:28:11
You over achieved son.

Dare I say there's some hope for the future.

Credit to Roy, that's some job he's done in the last few weeks.

Keep blooding the youngsters. Roll on Brazil 2014.

Indeed, lucky to get to penalties but we could have made the semi-final. And we were technically unbeaten.

Well done Roy, looking forward to future tournaments! Deserved the loss tonight, but played well in the tournament as a whole.

Which youngters? The number of foreign players at the top English clubs was bound to affect the national side.

More than technically, 0-0 is a draw.  Penalties are merely a way of deciding who advances through to the next round, not who wins the match.

And, yes, I agree with the sentiment of this thread...well done Roy.

I was amazed we got this far and topping our group was an over achievement for me. In the first half tonight we played the best I've seen for a long time, just a shame we were technically outclassed and Italy did deserve the win. I hope the FA keeps Hodgson on and lets him build for 2014 and don't bin him off for Harry.

Little bit of a shake up, introduce a few more youngsters and the future is brighter than it has been for the laste few tournaments anyway.

Agree with the thread title. Well done Roy and the team. I'm looking forwards to the world cup qualifiers now.

Exceeded my expectations by getting out of the group. I think there were plenty of positives and being hard to beat was one of them. Need to look at the centre of midfield and maybe the wingers but there's a decent enough group of players there to make qualifying or Brazil easy enough.

When you consider how long he has been in the job and the very short space of time he had to pick the squad and prepare, Hodgson has done a fantastic job. Sure the tactics were a bit too negative but I'd put that down to the lack of time as well.

Title: Re: Well done Woy

Don't forget the injuries too, limited our central midfield enormously.

I agree

Hodgson has done a great job with the talent, and especially, the moral that he had when he arrived.

His defensive style, I am sure, was his way of making the most of what he had, and to be honest, we had several good chances in each game.

At half time today, % wise, we were way behind on possession and passes, but about equal on good chances. Admittedly it wasn't quite so rosy second half

I'm more than happy for the opposion to have the ball as much as they like as long as they fanny about with it and don't score.

Agree with what has been said - Hodgson did a really good job in making England hard to beat in this tournament. Next thing to work on is not wasting possession when we win the ball and blending in a bit of attacking guile.

What hope? The players available are clearly not up to the task and never will be.

England will never win a tournament.

Yes, I quite like Woy but what he has available to represent my country are absolute dog shite

But England have won a tournament?  ;)

At the minute yes... But there is a lot of young talent ready to be primed for 2014. Walker, Jones, Smalling, Welbeck, Sturridge, Rodwell, Wilshere, Cleverly, Powell, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Bertrand ect ect

Let's hope Roy builds a team and hasn't got to pander to egos and the press. - the latter two can go and fuck themselves.

Surprised to see so much positivity on here - I was half expecting the usual same-old-England type comments. Glad to see some rational response! I think Roy's done a good job, and when you consider the fact that many players in or on the fringes of the squad are still young, there's a bit of hope for the future.

One step at a time and all that, but to get draws against France and Italy is much more than most would have expected a few weeks back and I'm hopeful that Roy can help us find that bit extra in attack over the WC qualifiers.

What's the point?

Why not just accept the fact that England will never produce technical players capable of ever getting beyond the odd quarter final.

It's fucking embarrassing - again

Why is it embarassing? Only four teams make the semis (obviously) and nobody in their right mind would put us in the top four. We were a kick or two away from hugely over-achieving, so fair play to Roy and the team for that. My hope is that this team can grow a bit over the next two years and be a genuine contender for the WC semis, which I see as ambitious but not outrageous.

Well done roy for showing us how to defend and play long ball,4-42 the way forward that was the most inept i have seen an england team.
But at least hes english roony was fucked before half time

These kids need to go abroad and play on leagues more akin to the slower more technical style of international football such as Spain or Italy or Germany.  We will get nowhere while they are fed on the wham bham style of the epl.

I also think Roy needs to can 4-4-2. As being technically inferior and outnumbered in midfield is a recipe for disaster. I would go 3-5-2.

I think Roy has done well.

Yes, England dont have the ability or players to be the best as Kerry Red points out - but that is why finally the nation has changed their expectations to reflect this. Did anyone think we had a chance of winning it, nope. Did we do better than most expected, yes we did.

We were hard to beat and committed to the cause - something which hasnt been seen in the national team for a good number of years.

Whilst I havent been paying much attention to news and/or paper and/or tv ads and fuck knows what else but this is the first time I remember reading/hearing/seeing nothing of the players off field/night time activities and what the WAGs were up to, which was a change for the better

I thought Roy was terrific this tournament. The only real decision I disagreed was to do with the admission of Rooney straight away. I be pleased if he took us into the next world cup.

I think he needs to be more flexible tactically.

Given the lack of time and the limited nature of the players available a QF exit can be thought of as above average.

Overall has done a good job with the players he has. Be interesting to see what style he plays once the younger players come into the side, might have to step away from the 4-4-2 mind

I am also amazed at the positivity on here..I for one am thoroughly depressed out the future...I would love to be proven wrong but I dont see anything in any of the youngsters to get me excited...thought Ashley young for example was hopeless, barely recall him completing a pass all night (bar one to ashley cole which admittedly almost led to a goal).
Heard on the radio this morning that the most successsful pass completion rate between two england players was between Hart and Carroll,...sums it all up for me nicely..

When the likes of Downing and Henderson are deemed to be the best we have - then what does that say

What the fuck are you waffling on about?

Downing didn't even play and Henderson got about 20 minutes all tournament.

Like Cibocchi_is_god pointed out, we have some good young'uns coming through for the next couple of tournaments:
Walker, Jones, Smalling, Welbeck, Sturridge, Rodwell, Wilshere, Cleverly, Powell, Oxlade-Chamberlain

The line about the young'uns is true, but we were saying the same about Ashley Cole, Terry, Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard not so long ago.

I just dont think the structure is condusive to harnessing talent at interantional level!

There were in the fucking squad so that means they are deemed to be the best in their relative position. The fact they didn't play much dont change that

But the current lot of youngsters are different players so how can you compare. They also played under different management.

When a good number of the squad cant even command a regular place in their club team says it all.

I know there is an argument against all the foreign players at the top clubs suffocating English talent

I had forgotten about the lack if time in order to prepare, makes his achievement better. I've enjoyed it this year. Without the expectation there I as a fan could enjoy it more.

Title: Re: Well done Woy
Post by: Flashheart on Monday, June 25, 2012, 09:36:18
Have you noticed just how injury ravaged the squad was? We did not have our strongest team available, not even close, yet we still managed to go to penalties in the QF's. That IS an achievement and bodes well for the future when we do have our best players at our disposal.

I don't buy into the talk that we English have to change the way we play and try to emulate the Spanish-Germans etc. We won't be able to do it so it's a waste of time. What we should be doing is developing the English way of playing. Woy did this to a point with how he set the team up,but Rooney dropping all over the pitch doesn't work against the top nations.

The only way i can see national success won't be pretty, it would be direct and rigid with hopes of counter attacks. Chelsea showed us how to do it.
This wont happen as the press and fans will want us to out pass teams which will not better what's out there.

I think short term yes, long term no.

Gerrard going down with cramp after 70 minutes is unheard of. Too much time without the ball will take it's toll on players.

I am guessing that Brazil in June/July will be boiling hot?  They will get to the second round and maybe the QF if they get a favourable draw.  Failure to keep the ball in those conditions will be a total killer!

Depends where abouts in Brazil we will be playing, if its closer to the south then it'll be cold they have their winter when we have summer, and in the north it'll be in the tropics so will be fairly hot and humid. so thats the excuse for failure ready then

I'd love the qualifying just to be a draw, so you could end up with Andorra, Bulgaria, Finland and Iceland in one group and Germany, France, Italy and Holland in another...

I praise him for the way he's got the squad playing as a team as opposed to a bunch of individuals etc. The tactics weren't always great but with the options we had at times there wasn't much more we could do.

We really now need to bin off players like Gerrard etc who have had their day. Bring in the youngsters from this point and take them to the WC in 2 years time (assuming we qualify).

Until we develop better technical players though we'll never stand a good chance in a tournament.

I wouldn't say I'm superstitious or anything, but I'm starting to think my footballing support is jinxed.

I haven't watched a single game of the Euros, then as soon as I stick my head around the door of one of the kid's rooms (where it is being watched) Ashley Young hit's the bar - England lose.

I had a season ticket at the CG for 3 years - Town were poor (including one relegation).

The first season where I didn't go to any league matches - Town are promoted as champions.
I went to the JPT final - poor again!

I wonder if Oxford have any season tickets left?  :hmmm:
