6 groups of 4 with the top 2 going through to the last 16, accompanied by the 4 best 3rd place teams ..... Strikes me as being most odd! One of the reasons I enjoy these championships is that the relatively small pool of teams is generally of a high quality shown by the games we have seen this tournament to date. We will be left with a really long first stage at the end of which we will only have 8 teams on the plane home. Wondering others opinions on this .... Bang on Donkey, the 86 and 90 world cups had some exciting last round of group matches as a potential third place team had to do well, as results in other groups affected their fate. Also means most teams can still qualify in last group matches, not many dead rubbers and extra knock out round! Brilliant to see it back.
