85% is down to what you eat 15% is down to gym/exercise
the concept is pretty simple. Calories out > calories in = weight loss
One things to remember is dont over rely on protein powders, they shuold not be used as a meal replacement, but as an additional meal, to get that extra protein, try and get as much of your protein from real foods, chicken, fish, beans, pulses, eggs etc etc
When it comes to diet make sure you are eating enough, these silly 1000 calorie a day diets DO NOT WORK!! Work out your BMR (google it)

Now to the training, dont over do cardio, and dont think 300 sits ups a day will get you a six pack, wel it will but it will stil be covered with a layer of fat.

Concentrate on your weights, big compound excersices. (compound means works a number of muscles in one go) as opposed to isolated excesises (dumbell curls and such)
The best excersises you can do are the following
Benchpress
Squat
Dead lift
Bent over row
Pull ups
to name a few.

Doing these in the right way can give you better fat loss results that any cardio. Im not saying dont do any cardio, but too many people think 5 days of cardio will work, yes, it will help loose weight, but it will not lose FAT!
If you do cardio, read up on something called HIIT.

if you want any more help let me know. i dropped 4/5 stone going back a year or so, since changing jobs and now having to commute ive let myself go a little, but getting back on it now with a wedding to prepare for.

IIRC Barry posted a link to a pretty brutal soup that could make you drop wait but always a short term fix. Like Chubbs said, the only long-term way to weight-loss is to expend more calories than you take in meaning you need to get off your arse and exercise more.

201.2km in 70 days either swimming or in the gym bike or run
Its a fiver & you get a water bottle & Tshirt & if you complete it then you go in a draw to win a years free membership at the centre of your choice
Given me a little incentive to get back in the gym anyway

My advice, think of a diet as a change of diet, not a temporary thing lasting N weeks. Go back to the old ways afterwards and there is no point in even starting. I lost nearly 4 stone last time and then put it all back on again through ill discipline :(

Lastly, this thread can not pass without the following Rimmer quote.
Quote
When you're younger you can eat what you like, drink what you like, and still climb into your 26" waist trousers and zip them closed. Then you reach that age, 24-25, your muscles give up, they wave a little white flag, and without any warning at all you're suddenly a fat bastard

Having kids does place a strain on the body....if you work at it though, you should at least be able to get some of your muscle tone back...vaginal exercises can be done in all sorts of places, no one need ever know.....

I've dropped 2 stone in the last 3 months just by playing football, albeit 4-5 days a week (for 2+ hours a day)
My diet has changed a bit, (no more snacking at night before bed) But not a great deal.
Exercise is essential for weight loss.

Eat nothing but fruit and drink nothing but water for a week. I haven't tried it for a whole week but I've done it for 2 days, lost about 3/4 pounds.

I doubt you did lose it though, I bet you body fat was almost exactly the same but you had less in your stomach.

Slow and steady wins the race, about 2lb a week is ideal.

Title: Re: Fat bastard...
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 18:30:49
Well it'll work over a week won't it, because long term you calories will be greatly reduced. Just saying 4lbs in 2 days is likely to be false amount..

actually no go on, I want to see if you pass out before day 7, or whether you lose 10lbs in a week and don't need medical attention :)

Title: Re: Fat bastard...
Post by: Coca Fola on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 18:33:04
My reasoning is that surely by just eating fruit you get all the vital vitamins you need but without all the calories? Alcohol will give me the carbs I need. Water will keep me alive.

Title: Re: Fat bastard...

Weighed myself last week and am up to 13.5 stone.  I should be 12.5 max.  I put this down to not attending the gym since October and attending both home an away games all season a large majority of them resulting in an all day\night session.

Must get back into the gym.  Anyone want to join me as I find it much easier with a training partner.  I'm a member of David Lloyd and can go weekday evenings 5pm until late and pretty much anytime at weekends.  Mainly looking to do weights as cardio is taken care of via cycling and squash during the week.

Completely agree, it's very similar. Having once weighted somewhere north of 17 stone - I'm 5'11" and currently about 12 stone and no longer a smoker - food is like an addiction. You need to change permanently. It's like saying I'll just smoke at lunch or just smoke at weekends (until you're fully off the fags a year or so later) because you're still a smoker, only doing it less.

You either give up and change the way you eat forever, or you stay the same and just convince yourself for short periods of time that you're being healthy and shit's changed. It just causes people to yoyo. People lose weight and then decide now they're slimmer they can eat shit again.

It's about eating well, staying eating well and being aware of the bad stuff you eat and the frequency with which you do it. Exercise is imperative as well. I fucking hate exercise though - despite using the gym near enough every bloody day.

My beer gut will soon be a thing of the past.

It's not so much a lose weight thing, it's more of a get healthier thing. I need to stop drinking during the week so I can concentrate on my job better. I tried a few weeks back and actually found it surprisingly easy but I had the problem of not being able to sleep, which in turn means I can't get any work done.

So, I need to try again but this time with excercise thrown in to (hopefully) help deal with the sleeping issue. Recently moved apartment and my new place has an excercise bike in it, so no excuses and all that.

If you have to refer to someone who is above the recommended healthy weight by some margin, what are you supposed to say? "If you were six inches taller you'd be the right weight for your height"?

If we had to use language like that I'm sure there are many who would struggle not to laugh if saying, "if you were more than twice your current height you'd be close to an average weight."

In answer to the original question, there really isn't an answer outside of eat well and exercise.  If you lack motivation, do a little internet research around weight-related illnesses.  Diabetes is a real visual shocker.  Get fat = lose limbs is a good scenario.

I struggle as much as anyone- a loveof food (not bad food, just lots of good home cooked stuff) and a love of beer and wine does it for me - but I'm much better and thinner than I used to be.

Still can't resist cheese though.  Fuck it, I'll die young...

Haven't had a drink for three weeks now, have been eating salad for lunch every day (I tend to eat quite healthy at work anyway, just taking salad and fruit usually). Cycled to work every day and played football last night.

No.

I buy a bag of mixed salad and put some walnuts, grapes, cherry tomatoes, a bit of camembert cheese. Perhaps some herbs (coriander, basil, etc) Also olive oil, balsamic vinegar & black pepper. Makes a salad much more interesting than just lettuce, tomato and cucumber.

I'm 6ft and just a shade over 13 stone, most of it is Maccy Ds though which is the problem. Got a bit of a round belly on the go, which I am desperate to get rid of. I've cut out the Maccy Ds just about and have started eating more cereals and fruit. It's not really the weight I wanna lose but the fatty gut, what would be the best regime for such a task?

Power wanks and the shits, seriously though, walk to the shops instead of driving, walk up the stairs instead of the lift, play football, go for a swim, or you could ride a bike to and from work.
