Title: Wasp nest
Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 11:18:04
It would appear I have one in my loft. Saw loads of the buggers buzzing around the eaves this morning.

I've called pest control and waiting for them to arrange to come out, but in the meantime is it safe to go in the loft and see how big this thing might be?

I wouldn't

They are only likely to attack in self defense but you might piss them off accidentally.

I had one last year in the loft too. Just left them to it as they vacate it come winter and don't return.

Fear of death aside, if it was me, I would have to poke me head in the loft just out of curiousity and thus I strongly recommend this course of action.

I know that, but the entrance is right above little one's bedroom window so would rather it was dealt with.

Don't fuck with wasps, leave it to the experts.

Surely if you take the little one round the grandparents, and dismantle said nest with some sort of object, they will all fuck off eventually, does it work that way?

I think the wasps may object to having their nest dismantled.

But I've changed my mind and now agree with DMR, it would be interesting to hear of the outcome. Get poking Samdy.

I'll have to leave it until pest control have been until I go an investigate how big it is. Don't fancy my chances as my old man is allergic to them and I don't know if I am too.

Google suggests now is the time of year that they start building them, so I would imagine it's not that big at the moment.

Did you leave the old nest in place arriba?

Yeah, it was too much hassle to try to get to it and its a paper like substance anyway.
I had an allergic reaction to a wasp sting about 10 years ago on golf course which was pretty scary(whole body sweled and blistered up.ambulance called and pumped full of addrenaline in hospital) getting stung last year and having no reaction was a bonus.

Are they charging you for this service ?

I believe for Rats it is foc but you get charged for wasps.

Anyway don't go in the loft, not just yet.
You can get rid of them in true DIY style. Long Pole with petrol soaked rag at end (or something else).
Always works for me.

Wasp Grubs are excellent Chub bait for fishing ;)

Holy shit that's sent a chill through me, they're the only thing i'm scared of.

Snakes, spiders, etc don't bother me in the slightest, but if a wasp comes anywhere near me I run around like a screaming little girl.

Don't fuck about with it, especially if there's a chance you could get an allergic reaction from a sting.
Get it sorted by professionals ASAP.

Anyway, the pest control guy's coming out this afternoon.

Wasps will protect the nest to the death (your death probably). Stay well clear.

Hit it with a stick then leg it into a big lake before you get stung.

That'd work for bees. Wasps are territorial so will just go at you until you get far enough away.

I learnt that from the tv show '999' with Michael Buerk

That's what I thought, they missed 1 year, then came back in the same nest last year. I still left them being of buddhist outlook.

The guy came round when we were both out, he sprayed some powder but has completely missed the hole where they've been entering.

The wife informed me that there's baby stuff in the loft that we're going to need so I chanced my luck. Got up there, saw one wasp, shat my pants and hot footed it back down the hatch.

Title: Re: Wasp nest
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 18:33:01
Good lad Sam, make sure that one wasp is exaggerated to 80,000 killer wasps when you tell the wife why the baby stuff is still up there.

Don't do that or they'll find a way down and then you'll be dealing with an allergic reaction in your throat. Certain death. Just chance your luck by holding your breath.

I got stung by 2 or 3 o the buggers when I was a kid. They got down the back of my t-shirt and I scratched which led to multiple stings. Back swelled up pretty badly.

Oddly don't have a problem with them at all though, will catch them in a glass and free them easily enough. They can be evil but ultimately they won't harm you unless your pissing them off.

Had another recce, no wasp in sight so grabbed all of the stuff I needed. Not opening that loft hatch again until December when they're all dead.

Whilst Googling earlier I did find this (http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=1150333&d=11827.65364&nmt=) thread on Piston heads which gave me a giggle.

Being a tightwad I would have to do a bit of DIY-ing pest control. A knife, bin bag, 5 layers of clothing, the worlds biggest fly swatter and a pair of my old socks.

Dress in said clothes.
Cut nest from rafters and deposit into bin bag.
Drop socks into bin bag.
Splat any loose wasps.
Tie up bin bag.
Dispose.

Apparently there was a wasp nest on the other side of our fence which backs onto a primary school.

I noticed at the weekend a group of kids about 12-13 were paying a lot of attention to it, hitting it with stones, sticks, etc.

I got home from work last night and the said fence has been pretty much obliterated by fire.
My initial thought was those kids had set fire to to the wasp nest.
I phoned the police to report it and also phoned the school.

I had a phonecall from the school this morning, it turns out the groundsman of the school decided he would get rid of the nest himself and in the process set fire to the whole area, including our fence.

They're going to get in contact with me to get the fence replaced and were very apologetic.
Atleast I haven't got to mess about dealing with house insurance to get it sorted.

I've just got an image now of someone like Sloth from The Goonies with a flame thrower.
