Title: Nokia 700 or Galaxy Y/Ace/Mini
Post by: 4D on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, 11:20:43
Does anyone have experience with any of these phones? I am looking to change to one of these from my HTC. I want a pretty decent battery life, quick response and ease of texting.

Any pros or cons please let me know?

Ta.

For that price range I'd recommend the Huawei Ascend G300 from Vodaphone for £100. Battery is reasonable. I get a couple of days unless I'm playing games.

That's an option,  but I have to admit I've never heard of them.

I've got a Nokia Lumia 700 - which I think is what you where referring too. Got 4 out of 5 stars where the Galaxy S2 got 5. I was advised away from the Y/Ace/Mini and onto the S2 or Lumia.

Good phone, plenty of apps - not as many as S2 or Iphone but increasing- especially with the bigger apps -depends if you want to use it for that. Can hook it up to hotmail and dump pictures using sky drive. Easy interface, download Microsoft Zunes - which is similare to that of Itunes but not as good. Relatively quick and easy to use. Have dropped in a few times and it seems more robust thatn other fragile phones. Slightly smaller than s2.

Hope this helps.

Yes - I have it sync'd to 3 email accounts. Its good and a different option to the norm - but its not an Iphone. I like the FB, TWitter and Kindle apps.

The Lumia 900 should be out over here soon, already out in the US.

I quite like the Lumia's, would get one if it wasn't for the iPhone.

Couldn't convince myself to own a Windows phone out of an unfounded prejudice. I bet the OS is polished but are the apps there in the same way they are for Android/Apple?

not the same amount of apps - but so far everything I've needed. I own a spirit level so don't need that one  ;)

I don't really need / use a lot of apps, as long as it has maps, gps and a sat nav type thing that'll do for me. I usually use my phone to text, make calls and browse the web etc.

The sat nav on it is excellent - so is the maps.

Resurrecting this rather than starting a new thread....

I want a smart phone on contract, but don't want to pay a lot as I cant take a phone into work. So, all I want to do is:
- text and make calls
- check emails
- sort out cricket teams using Teamer (Android app coming out in 4Q12)
- check the TEF!
- Facebook
- Check the Town official site
- Keep upto date on news
- Listen to the odd mp3 when I have to go on long bus journeys

I don't get all this app thing as I don't know whats out there or where to look for it!

I can't justify £500 for an iphone and don't want something like the Samsung Galaxy S3 as I want the phone to fit in my trouser pocket!

Have been looking at a Samsung Galaxy Ace - I have always had Samsung phones - Apart from my work phone which is a Blackberry Curve, with everything useful disabled!  But have been thinking of a Huawei Ascend. However, number 2 son has just got a  Huawei Blaze free with his £7.50 Tesco contract.

So, my quandary is:

1. Is the Samsung worth me paying £150 extra than a free Huawei Blaze?
2. Is it worth me paying £100 extra for an Ascend over a Blaze?
3. Is the Ascend worth £50 over the Blaze?

Help me oh wise and wonderful people!

Length not gurth. The new phones look pretty slim in fairness.

Is that a phone in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?

I find wallets, keys, change and fag packets far more intrusive. Phones are so slim these days you don't really notice they're there half the time unless you wear gay skinny jeans.

What is so good about the Galaxy S2 ?

The specification of the S2 is far superior to any of the phones you've listed. Smartphones are essentially small computers and the lower spec ones won't run as smoothly and may be a bit laggy in operation*

I've not actually used any of the phones you've listed, perhaps trying them out in a shop is a good idea.

Don't get a HTC if you want decent battery life. They always produce poor batteries that don't have enough capacity to power a decent smartphone. All smartphone batteries don't last for ages but HTC seem to be the worst of the bunch. Id go with an S2 as you can get pretty cheap deals on them now the S3 is out. Failing that there is always the Galaxy Note or other cheaper options in the galaxy range.

What is decent about the Huawei?

I have the g 300. Budget phone but highly rated in reviews prompted me to get it. Good camera, do3s what a smartphone should and the battery is good.

Trying them out is the hardes thing for me to do, due to a variety of demands on my time. Want to whittle it down to 2 before doing that then buying.

I get what you mean w/r/t specs of Samsung. But, I'm just worried that I would be investing in an 'overclocked super lightning fast gaming pc' equivalent when all I would do is basic functions.

I don't understand what all the apps could do for me and how fast the phone has to be to run them.

Can anyone help this dunce a little more please?

Go on phone retailer sites and check the spec-reviews then decide.

Regarding apps - you can find them for pretty much anything. Often it will just be a better optimised version of their webpage e.g. Facebook & Twitter. Sometimes they are specific, for example guitar tuning software, tv guides, games, bet calculators, BMI calculators etc. etc.

The speed of the phone doesn't just affect apps running, the whole running environment could be slicker or slower moving between screens or loading web pages etc. Assume if it isn't negatively mentioned in reviews then the phone runs perfectly well.

As arriba says, look at some reviews - this site is also a good one:

http://www.techradar.com/search?searchTerm=Huawei

Don't forget things like the camera, internal storage space etc. It sounds like if you just want web browsing and emails to get a phone with a decent screen and one that runs smoothly. The S2 is still a really good spec phone, but it's by no means near the quickest ones these days.

If you can't get a swap consider changing the home screen launcher to something like this:

That's what I did, which is why I came up with the initial group.

Bought a Huawei Blaze for my son on Thursday and he loves it. Made me think that maybe a Blaze was good enough. But, recalled you saying about the Ascend and found the link that Sie Pie posted (plus a CNet one). Problem I find with these 'techie' sites is that they review for people more tech-savy than me.

Title: Re: Nokia 700 or Galaxy Y/Ace/Mini
Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, July 22, 2012, 23:02:31
I don't mean to sound harsh but I don't think you're going to find a definitive answer on here. Most people will go by phone specs and 'techie' details. I have no idea what the Blaze is like up and running. Play around with the menus and web browser. If it works smoothly then it will suit your needs for emails, web browsing and apps. Could be a decent enough phone for you.

I've used some phones in the past which promised great things but they were laggy as hell and frustrated the hell out of me to use. Some of these weren't even smart phones, hence I always try before I buy these days.

However, I say take a punt on a free phone. If it's shit you can get rid and buy a better spec one sim free. For example the Sony Xperia U is only a bit over £150 and is apparently a decent phone, especially for the money. Just make sure your contract has data included, 500mb is usually the standard amount and you'll probably need that for everyday usage.

Not harsh - Will play with my son's Blaze, which on some reviews is claimed to be 'laggy'. If it is, will prob try the Ascend, as the price is right.
