Title: People that went Via Coach to Wembley
Post by: Sade on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 16:12:48
Hi All,

Just a little querie. Is it actually ilegal to take alchohol on to a coach trip ?
The reason I ask is a friend returned to the coach after the game had finished to find her bag of 3/4 beers had been taken. The coach driver was quizzed and his reply was that some of the coaches were searched by the Police and any alcholol that they found they have taken with them and that if she wanted to go and get it she would be fined!

Did anybody else find this or has she been well and truly mugged right off by the driver?
King regards
Sadie

Mugged by the driver for sure.

Not illegal to take Alcohol but illegal to drink it.

There is no way on earth you would be arrested for making an enquiry to where it has gone.

If it has been confiscated they should provide a receipt.

Mugged off by the driver....enquire with the coach company first.

Hate this sort of thing.

I drank port in a ribena bottle.

No, the driver was right. Also, you cannot take any alcohol either.

Sorry to be anal about this but I have been mugging up on the law about this for reasons which I won't go into on here..

The use of transport to designated sporting events is covered by the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985, as amended by the Public Order Act 1986. With respect to booze it says that any PSV  - Public Service Vehicle - (and also RSVs i.e. trains as well, as we know) used primarily for transport is not allowed to carry any alcohol or even to have intoxicated persons on board to or from the event. The driver and/or the drunk passenger are liable.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1985/57 (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1985/57)

There is a load of other shit in there including the bits that deal with not being able to drink alcohol in sight of the pitch or being smashed at a game.

'Designated sporting events' are any Association Football match:

Quote
Association football matches in which one or both of the participating teams represents a club which is for the time being a member (whether a full or associate member) of the Football League, the Football Association Premier League, the Football Conference National Division, the Scottish Football League or Welsh Premier League, or represents a country or territory.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/3204/contents/made (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/3204/contents/made)

...hence why you can have a beer and watch friendlies against Supermarine.

What pisses me off though is an additional section in the Act:

Quote
Alcohol on certain other vehicles.

(1) This section applies to a motor vehicle which—
(a) is not a public service vehicle but is adapted to carry more than 8 passengers, and
(b) is being used for the principal purpose of carrying two or more passengers for the whole or part of a journey to or from a designated sporting event.

So this means it applies to any vehicle of nine seats or over, even if it is privately owned  ::) This includes the carriage of alcohol, drunk passengers, blah blah blah. Well to be straight they can fuck right off. If I hire a minibus privately to go to an away match then this ain't gonna apply to me  :smugfu:

Just a warning to others though...

Anyway, the legislation is inconsistent with reality anyway. What is the difference between getting on a FGW train for an away day and drinking and going on a footie special train? Or getting a public bus to the match and having a few tins? Load of old cock.

Actually...

That's not right either, is it?

To the letter of the law we should not be allowed to drink pitch side at pre-season friendlies either.  :headhurts:

Fucked up.

If you can't have it on the coach, ask the driver for a 3 hour pub stop en route.

We genuinely never knew it was illegal, I've been on coaches and drank a few before so I thought no different apart from the Bus driver being a bit of a bell and thinking we were going to get ruined and trash the thing up. The coach was mainly full of the older generation. Now I know this I will have a chat with her about it.

No bus driver i know would take beer after people had left the coach.

If he was worried about it he would have told people on route that drinking wouldn't be tolerated.

Also in my view if the police would never go onto a coach and confiscate drink without the passengers being there.

 :hmmm: :hmmm:

When we took a minibus to Charlton a couple of years back the rozzers saw our booze on the bus and just told us to stick it under the seats out of the way.

Old bill probably took it. More than likely the same cunts who nicked peoples cans who were drinking in the street.
