Title: Cheltenham Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Saturday, March 10, 2012, 03:30:57
Good Evening.

I have a kebab, it's nice.

Playing futsall tomorrow meaning I can't listen to the majority of the game but I reckons we can win.

2-0 town with Fodders making a few wonder saves!

SSWS has spoken.

It is the word of the lord therefore it shall be. I've not slept myself yet, the sambucca may have had something to do with it.

A boring win, hopefully more boring then the rest.

Realistically, this is a game where we must avoid defeat because a win throws them a title lifeline.  If we win, they will almost certainly drop any aspirations they have for winning the title and focus on promotion instead.  Fingers crossed.  Could go either way, couldn't it.

We know it will be a tough game they have plenty of shots ongoal per game so should see a few goals, unless we cancel each other out and a boring 0-0 game, can't see it though, so a  4-2 win to the town infront of 10,783. COYR   :beers:

3 - 1 victory today, crowd 9'665 (901 from Cheltnumb)

Seen Cheltnumb a few times this season, if they are on their game it could be closer than the above prediction, although if we are on our game, we will smash them off the park.

Our record against promotion rivals is decent, the rugby folk have had patchy form of late, an early 25 yarder from Ritchie will open the floodgates.

If this is true then we have sold 11,689 tickets to Town fans alone, add onto that walk ups of probably a few hundred (Town fans) then we will have near enough 12,000 home fans with (allegedly) 800 sold so far of Cheltnumb fans.

So may a crowd of near 13,000 could be on the cards.

I'm not sure what to think about this. I hate Cheltenham because I can only recall losses and bad results against them. I also saw they had 23 shots in their last game, which implies they play similarly to us - attacking open football.

There could be a few goals in this and both defences will need to be awake. This could be a fantastic game of football.

Have to say personally I would have Connell in front of Murray.

I know we got away with it against Daggers with McCormack at RB & Risser in the middle, but I would assume that Cheltenham will test us more so a bit concerned with this Back 4.

Unless Paolo is playing 3 at the back with Risser just in front, although I can't see it happening

Had a think, and can see why Connell has been left out. Cheltenham have some big lads at the back which might make Connell's game difficult, so he's gone for a big lad in Tehoue and for pace with Murray. Would expect Connell to be straight back in next week.

Half time.

Good half. Cheltenham have given it a go and caused us problems by the sounds of it. A few have said it was never a penalty, but it doesn't matter when you have Wes there to save it any way. After that we seemed to come to life. Rooney's name cropped up a lot more often and we spent a lot more time on the attack. Let's hope we don't get sloppy in the second half - everything else is going our way and 3 points would make the table look truly incredible.

Cheltenham are a cheating bunch of bastards, can't see this ending 11 v 11.

Either the ref is going to grow a pair & book some of theirs for diving, or it's going to result in a red for one if ours. Duffy should be off already.

It's a shame because if they concentrated on playing football they aren't a half bad side. They do look a bit suspect at the back at times though.

And Gills losing is not the life saver some might think from Oxford's point of view.  Think of it as a Crewe win.  If scores stay as they are, there will be two teams breathing down their necks in the race for 7th after today, not just one.

Quote
Hamish Marshall on BBC Final Score, reporting from the CG apparently. Nothing about how we'd dominate dthe 2nd or Swindon got let off time and again. Just that Swindon are well on their way and Foderingham saved the penalty from Duffy 5 mins before the goal. Mark Chapman needs a slap as well for saying top of the league Swindon got one over on their local rivals this afternoon. How about Swindon got one over Cheltenham in the top of League 2 derby? It's like they're actually afraid to say "Cheltenham". And they were using our old badge. Moaning about this because I'm not going to moan about our team who gave their all.

Very happy with that... didn't play much football today, with Ritchie being under-utilised and the central two not getting on the ball enough, but was an enjoyable game. Tehoue looked a bit rubbish/unfit, and i'm a bit concerned as to why Connell didn't make the bench (unless he's injured?). We've beaten all our rivals this season, the title is ours.

Oh, and i'd like Rooney to use the ball better at times... sometimes when he gets a bit selfish we are susceptible to the quick break as we've committed men forward and then lost posession.

When we can nit-pick like that, you know things are going well!

That was never a penalty in a million years. Justice.

Cheltenham deserved a point, no doubt. Second half our midfield struggled, particularly after Smith went off.

But who the hell cares, we had a bit of luck and 3 points. Would Cheltenham rather play well and lose or take 3 points. The latter. Because that is how you get promoted. In any case you don't go 8 points clear by luck.

We'd also do well to remember this is the end of a very very tough run of about a million Tuesday night games. Test passed.

Just got back.

That was a tight game as 'Nam played a 4-5-1 formation, which they never changed, so they could frustrate us, which they did all game. The penalty was a joke...and justice was done. The ref was useless, doing from blowing up for just about everything for the first 30 mins..then changing tact, and hardly blowing up for free-kicks at all. And how we got away with not having to defend with 9 at the end...I do not know.

Duffy is a cunt, and was lucky to stay on the field for his wild challange just after the penalty miss, as well as giving the lino verbal just before half-time.

Rooney was poor...Ritchie was even worse. These to need to be told to don't always shoot once you get in the penalty area. Get to the byline and cross it in from there.

MOM's ; Fodders and Devera.

At the end of the day we are 8 points clear, with a game in hand and a goal difference nearly twice as big as anyone else.

Catch us if you can !!

By the way, how did the Pox get on !!! Third...My ARSE !!!

Great tenacity shown to grind out the result today but agree with most that we were dominated in the 2nd half.
Chelt have played 4-5-1 all season and their position has been based mainly on the performances of their middle 3.
I feared that our midfield would be overrun today, especially without Risser who can play a good defensive mid game and when Smith went off this happened.  With Paolo's usual meticulous homework I was surprised that we didn't set up differently to counteract that.
Chelt's main issue is that they need a replacement for that petulant useless Rovers reject Duffy - other than him they looked a decent team with Pack, Jombati & Butland particularly good. I would expect Pack to off to a championship team at end of season and Butland is touted as a future England keeper.

1 goal conceded in 12 home league games from Wesley has been vital to our success so deserved recognition with MoM today.

Thought he played well for them today, outshone our midfield!  When will we learn not to hoof the ball at every opportunity, when we put it aboput on the ground we got through them quite easily.  Hoof the ball and we do not have the will to contest that second ball.  Oh and was the Pericard's twin brother who came on in the second half?

Good result. We kind of bypassed the midfield second half. Ferry went missing.

And I wish Devera would stop throwing his arms around opposition players. On another day the ref could've given a free kick every time.

The team wouldn't have wanted to play hoof ball. Cheltenham are a good side and forced the play. We won a tight game and that is all that matters. The flowing football will return but grinding out wins will do for me against the side who were second pre kick off.

Post by: joteddyred on Saturday, March 10, 2012, 18:34:54

Cheltenham deserved a point, no doubt. Second half our midfield struggled, particularly after Smith went off.

Totally agree, we were an absolute shambles in midfield after Smith was taken off.  I really don't understand why Di Canio took him off tbh, he was having a good game and breaking the play up well.  Ferry and Cox just seemed to get in each other's way.

Cibo at times was decidely dodgy and Ritchie undoubtedly struggled without the link up play he has with Caddis.

Cheltenham had the better chances, but a combination of poor finishing and Wes in superb form was enough to grab all 3 points.  Another inconsistent referee and no way was that a penalty?

I didn't see the game against D & R, so excluding that one, we haven't played particularly well since the Crawley game.  However only 1 defeat in that period including wins against all around us, is all that matters.  That is why we are Top of The League!

Cheltenham had the better chances, but a combination of poor finishing and Wes in superb form was enough to grab all 3 points.  Another inconsistent referee and no way was that a penalty?

I'd disagree with that, they nearly but not quite made chances. It was last ditch cleaning up from the back 5. Compare that with Bodin's 1 on 1 and the tip over from Rooney. Can't remember Fods having to make that kind of save.
----
Also not sure what Connell has done not to even be in the squad. Much as I like Bodin I'd still have him and Murray behind Connell.

Anyone notice that Devera had to be helped from the pitch at the end of the game - he was walking around like a totally drunk guy!  Apparently has had to have stitches in a head wound, thank god we don't have a game this Tuesday.

Devera has been superb recently.Thought Chelts left back was best i seen here all season, positionally brilliant forcing ritchie to defend more allowing them to overun midfield.A bit like what Caddis offers us

First gamesince  Wigan and can't add much to what has already been said. We were lucky, they missed at least two gilt edged chances and played very well 2nd half.

Pack was class - I was well impressed with him and Paolo should add him to his shopping list. Liked their left back who had Ritchie in his pocket and their winger who tussled and more often than not got the better of Rooney.

Taking into account we had a band aid over our defence I thought they did ok - yes a little shakey but they were up against a good team - it should that they hadn't played much toegther before. Personally I'd have kept Alan Mc at CH and play Cibo or Thompson right back with Kennedy left.

Here is a thought  - in games like this why don't Ritchie and Rooney swap during the game - it would mean that they wouldn't have to check back the whole time and give us a different angle of attack.

They interviewed Devera after the game.

He said he went down and then 'woke up' in the changing room with 6 stitches in his head. Doesnt remember anything inbetween!

Cheltenham were not a bad side, and put us under a fair bit of pressure without creating many clear-cut chances.  If it wasn't for them diving at every opportunity I would say that they deserved a point, but those antics and the number 20 trying to get Cibo sent off when he was the last man but running towards the DRS is enough for me to laugh at the cheating cunts.

Played well, although if cheltenham had more guile going forward they should really have caused us more problems. Got the ball between our midfield and defence so many times second half, but never made it count.

Good game though, good win. Woohoo

To be fair, you truncated his quote.  He actually said 'On our day we're the best team in this league by a country mile.'  Problem is, it wasn't their day, was it?  It was ours.  Just as it was also our day recently when we played Southend, and Shrewsbury, and Crawley.

The table doesn't lie.  Mark Yates is a good manager, and he knows this.  There is one stand out team in this league this season, and it isn't Cheltenham Town.

First team that has come to the CG that maybe should've had a share of the spoils. We shaded the 1st half but were pretty much under the cosh for most of the second, we really looked nervous!

Never a penalty, Duffy got a massive handful of Rissers shirt and back peddled as fast as he could. I've not read much of this thread but I'm sure some 'I used to referee in the Sunday Leagues' type poster has already disagreed with everyone else and said it was stone waller, but from my position I think the ref was totally conned.

For a patched up back line I think they did ok, but you could tell that Risser is a CM, he let the ball bounce in front of him far to often.

The only issue I had was the fact that Chelts were playing 3 in centre mid, one as an AMC, totally dominating possession in the 2nd half and we seem to do nothing to counteract it. When Benson started to drop deep we improved, but I would've taken Bodin off and replaced him with Cox to play with Smith as CM's, put Ferry to AMC and played Benson up top with Rooney and Ritchie as wingers.

But well chuffed with the win, fantastic stuff from the boys.

Fair point Batch.  I suppose it seemed they were around the goalmouth a fair bit in the second half without really having any massive chances and of course a penalty save clouds things as well.

I've felt Connell has been unfairly treated for a while and assuming he wasn't injured, today cements that view further.   I personally would also also pick Connell ahead of Murray certainly and even Bodin.  He seems to read Benson's positioning much better and is more likely to score himself.

I think most of us would rather see Connell picked above loan signings of similar or some may say less ability.  Although I appreciate he was only on the pitch for 40 mins, I saw nothing to suggest Tehoue offers anything additional to what we already have.  In fact he looked quite unfit, which if is the case, offers bugger all.

Truth be told they looked a very good team but without the quality to finish off their good approach play.

Yes they had a lot of possession, which is going to happen normally if you're playing 5 across the midfield against 4...but they were relying on set pieces for their best chances.

Their full backs had Ritchie and Rooney in their pockets. thier midfield fucked all over ours even more so when Smith went off. If their wingers / cunt wre more interested in paying football instead of being whinging, cheating cunts then the Nam would have won. Duffy being the biggest cunt I've seen at the CG this season., Tried to get one of ours sent off when he went down holding his head. The ref wins the award for giving the most fucking stupid imbecile penalty award. A blatant free kick to us became a penalty. Then after its saved Duffy goes in 2 footed and late and gets a yellow instead of a straifght red. He should have got another yellow for bitching at the ref / lino / the blade of grass / the advertising hoardings etc.
Kaid should have got a yellow for his dive in the penalty area.
McGalshan unbelievably tried to get Macca sent off and the another of ours later.
The ref should also be totally ashamed of the free kick her gave when Cibo did a cracking tackle on the edge of the box in the 2nd half. For all their possession Nam produced fuck all.
We deserved that win, if for no other reason than Duffy doesn't play for us.

Pah, I genuinely tried being nice and reflective on their forum but I mostly got more replies with more chips than a McCain factory.

But they did bring up one point. When Alan Mac messed up and pushed whoever it was that nearly robbed him - my view was that it was never a clear cut goalscoring opportunity. He wasn't clearly through on goal in any way shape or form. Unsurprisingly one or two suggested it should have been red - a thought that ever even entered my mind. Opinions?

Another couple of odd ref decisions I do find strange:
  1. When Wes took a whack he threw the ball out. I didn't hear the ref's whistle before yet he gave an (uncontested) drop ball?
  2. When Devera and Risser twatted each other they should have gone off, right? I thought the only reason you didn't is if the goalkeeper was involved.

In terms of 1 then the dopy cunt was going away from goal when Macca pushed him. If he had carried on the only goakl he would have threatened was his own.

I thought that on a bad day a ref could've made it red - it would have been wrong as he turned away from goal but you know what refs are like.

When Risser/Devera started to walk off PDC went mental. I don't understand why the ref didn't make them go unless there is a genuine 2 player off rule ??

Fully agree on both. 1 shoul've been a throw-in and 2, well we should've been defending with 9 men.

I couldn’t believe these decisions either, we benefited massively from the 2nd one.

Agree with comments about Pack and their left back.  Anyone who keeps Ritchie in his back pocket must have something about him.

Overall today I really enjoyed us being in a real tough battle and coming out on top, feels a bit more satisfying than a routine win.

Numb came to a job on us and very nearly pulled it off.

I thought they were shit when we Played them on their dung heap but they are not in their league position by fluke and were a much stronger unit but still happy to bully and put the boot in as they did way back at the start of the season.

My main points are:

Weak ref who had to grow a pair as Nam started the usual tactics and tricks.  How he gave that pen is beyond me....I will have to see it again tonight but my first thought was he backed in waving his arms about and fell down.....shite.....get out jail card when foods saved it.

Great goal....Benson has been a real gem for us.

Disappointed that we seemed to fall into the trap of playing Nams game, all high balls and hopeful lunks down the wings.

We had a couple of good shots but the game just dragged out with Chelts threatening without the final ball and we ran into one another.....in the end we held on....thank fuck...a priceless three points.

As for the new man Twooy, the jury will be out for a while yet.  A bloke who looks a bit like a smaller Chief from the good old days...held the ball up well and had a good touch but didnt seem too agile and off the pace....i question why we have signed another striker at this stage of the season in the first place...is there any need now?  Connell must be well fucked off!

4 points from Crewe and Torquay and we will be almost there.

Players look as if they could do with the rest....

Don't forget to bathe and shower to scrub that Swindon filth off, you might smell for another week or two.

Swindon were simply AWFUL, we gave then too much respect if the first 45min, if there was any justice we would have been coming home with the three points. Swindon will not win the title, its between us and Shrewsbury.

Quote
Or when two Swindon players receive treatment in final minute, throw to us to hurl into the box, yet neither goes off. Another homer ref.

Quote
Great effort from our boys. Duffy was the best AND worst player on the pitch!!

Quote
On the plus side, we outplayed them and looked the better/stronger team.
Di Canio was always going to try and get under our skin, and at the end he showed what a tosser he is, if we'd have "won the league" today as he has said, then Yates wouldn't have celebrated to their fans.

We were the better team

Quote
Must have been at a different game to you. Swindon edged the first half? Why? Because you scored from your only half chance? We spent the entire first half in the final third. Second half there was very little between the teams as Swindon started playing high ball after high ball.

On another day it could have been 2 or 3 to us and I doubt Swindon would have much to complain about.

Have to agree that Bags looked lost when he came on. McGlashan was a danger each time he got on the ball first half and Pack ran the game in the second. Duffy got into the positions but for whatever reason didn't produce an end result.

Someone also needs to tell the MoM that the wee semi-circle at the edge of the box is not an area you can handle the ball in.

The ref was a disgrace. If the physio has to come on the players have to go off before being allowed back on.
That was a reply to batch who I though behaved quite well on there TBH not taking the piss as he could (and maybe should) have done.

I actually quite like the way opposition fans moan and bitch. We must be luckiest team alive at the moment. Every other team in the play offs are "better than us" and there we are romping the fucking thing. Lucky, luucky Swindon. Lucky we've only conceded in 4 home games this season and only once since October - how lucky can you get. the team today cheated a penatly and missed it - how fucking lucky. Crawley are the best team in this league and yet somewhow we're 15 points clear. nam are the best team in thisa league but we're only 9 points clear of them.

We weren't anywhere near as good as we could be today.

This is probably not surprising, considering we've played Saturday-Tuesday for four straight weeks, were missing our captain and one of our best players, with another first teamer (Flint) also out injured, meaning we had a central midfielder at Right Back and another at Centre Back.

All that being the case, we just beat the team second in the league who think they're the best in this Division. Which frankly, is fucking brilliant.

...you have got to assume that the writer of that comment must be fairly new to football.  So we have spent more than most clubs in the division?  Of course we have.  A cursory look at the Table of Average Attendances (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/attendance/_/league/eng.4/english-league-two?cc=5739) for the division will tell you how this was possible.  And that is without even taking account of our having some of the highest ticket prices in the division.  Or that we have had two decent cup runs this season, and a Wembley final coming up.

Simply put, spending that is unsustainable for the likes of Crawley (average attendance: 3,173) or Cheltenham (average attendance: 3,378) might well be completely sustainable for Swindon Town (average attendance: 7,967).

I like Cheltenham.  I like the way that, like Aldershot and a few other clubs I can think of, they have grafted their way in to the League and have maintained there place there through their own efforts.  The antithesis of the Franchise FC situation.  Their League place has been earned...and it's been earned with limited resources which makes the achievement all the more impressive.  But some of their fans are dicks, and no mistake.

Just seen the highlights on SSN. Not a penalty but would have been shouting if the situation had been reversed.

So how was your lad's first game, then?

Worst I've seen us play this season, Bar Fodds, Devera, Mac and Benson,  they were all off the pace, looked tired to me. Cheltenham were good  at the back, but woeful up front, The pitch also looked over watered to me, and a lot of our players seemed to keep getting the ball stuck under their feet. Decent result can't complain too much. Oh got a right shock when I noticed the Bulldog was gone, the floor looks tidier now though!

So how was your lad's first game, then?

Thanks for asking.

In my opinion he is too young but he has been asking to go so had the chance of a free ST for the day so I thought why not. To be fair to him he was great, got a bit fidgety at 4.30 but thats to be expected and the 2nd half wasn't great. Asked lots of questions about everything and anything - even "why do they draw on the pitch ?"

When we got home I caught him playing with his lego singing "we are Swindon, we are Swindon and Paolo is our king"

I've got a great pic of him and will frame it along with the ticket - just for that added incentive.

Spot on Nemo.

What I find quite astonishing about the whole 'Swindon are a lucky side' argument that seems to be coming from the Chelts fans is that do they honestly believe that we play like that week in, week out? Seriously?

We were not good today, tired and off the pace but c'mon, the table doesn't lie. The 3 nils home and away against Creepy? The 4-1 away at Southend? 2 defeats since Boxing day? I mean I could go on.

Its amazing to think that they feel justified in making any judgement about us and our qualities based on one 90 min performance.

We weren't very good, yet still beat you. We won't win the league? Go and check the latest league table out?

And going into the Di Canio thing at the end, if you give abuse out, then expect to take it when it comes back round. To be honest though, all I could see from the Cheltenham fans going mental was about 10 15 year olds trying to breach the barrier! Trollolololololol!

You can see how Cheltenham have got up to 2nd. They were tough to beat. Made for a poor game, but nevermind. Good home attendance.

Risser if you are playing central defence, you cannot let the ball bounce, ever.

Cannot believe I left before Paolo had done his celebrating. Heard the huge roar in the car park. Im not leaving another game this season until Paolo's left the pitch.

I said exactly that during the game. Very solid and well organized without being massively threatening up front although at the time you're always worried they're going to sneak one while it's only 1-0. I was convinced they were going to nick one right at the end.

On another day it could easily have been a draw and we couldn't have complained. Any promotion team is going to have days like that during the season though and the fact is we dug in and got the win and that's all that matters.

Risser did ok at CB but I wonder if PDC will switch Macca back there for the next game? Maybe stick Nathan Thompson in at RB?

And it was bloody good support as well, both in numbers and that fact that they got behind the team when not playing brilliantly. I also made the mistake of leaving when I thought everyone had left the pitch and missed Paolo's little cameo. All in all though, very happy with that.

It is worth waiting until all the players have left the field just to see Paolo celebrate . What i dont understand is how people leave a game like yesterdays with 5 minutes to go the County Ground has got to be one of the best grounds to get away from even when we have a big crowd never takes more than 10 minutes to get on your way so there is no logic in it.

Totally agree with the statement about leaving early!!  Although it could be that they don't like taking their life in their own hands crossing the CG car park, some of those pricks that park there and have to get away straight away are bloody dangerous, ignore hundreds of people walking across and literally drive through them, round them or over them.  Bloody stewards should put a stop to that before somebody is hurt.

Could possibly have happened in 78/79, that was the epic season that saw us, Gills, Toshack's Swansea, Graham Taylor's Watford, and unbelievaibly, Graham Turner's Shrews, scrap it out til the last game.

Of course, then there were no PO's and also 2 points for a win...in typical Town fashion we ended up 5th, yet would havegone up automatically, with the same record 3 years later.

I doubt that we'll have to fight that hard for a win again this season (or come up against a team as good as Cheltenham) and we weren't very good either but got the result which is what Champions do. I can't see anyone catching us before the end of the season.

Caddis is a massive loss and his absence upset the balance on the right. Risser is a very limited footballer but contributed to keeping a clean sheet against a very good side. The substitution of Smith pretty much handed control of the game to Cheltenham and put us under unecessary pressure.

The referee was a hopeless case who needs to sit down, grow a pair and study the rulebook - never a penalty, inconsistent bookings, failed to comprehend the advantage rule and what happened at the end with Devera and Risser? Was allowing them to stay on an act of kindness or apology for the penalty decision? Strange.

edit: Tehoue looked crap. I don't understand the Connell neglect.

I always seem to get at least one person in my row (if not more) who arrives at about 3.04, leaves their seat for a piss/cup of tea half way through the half, leaves again just before half time, get's back just after half time and repeats the ritual of the first half then leaves 5 minutes from the end.

OK I've possibly exaggerated that slightly but some people are un-fucking-believable. You really wonder why they go. That's just reminded me of the time I sat just behind a woman who, presumably having paid her £25 or whatever, spent the whole time reading her Kindle. Unreal. ::)

I find it quite interesting that Oxford average roughly the same as us given the geographical locality between us both, the fact they were non-league for many years and the number of Town fans in Oxfordshire. Do they get a lot of fans from outside of Oxfordshire?

Funny isn't it? I thought it was a penalty at the time and I've watched it a couple of times on the FL Show and I still think it was. And from what I've seen on here and even on a Cheltenham forum, it would appear that the ref was right in not making Risser and Devera go off after the clash of heads.

Outside of Oxfordshire? Dont be daft.

Id say they do have a good % of the local populations of East Oxford and Abingdon supporting them to be fair. More concentrated support. If we had the same sort of % fans/population out of Swindon then we would get 20k a week. We should blow them out of the water really. Maybe it will happen if the ground gets redeveloped like it did for Reading. Doubt it though.

The present day county of O*fordshire, is a recent bastardisation of boundaries, by the Heath government of 74.

For a good thousand years previously places like Abingdon were in the noble county of Berkshire, birth-place of Alfred the Great.  Then Oxfordshire got no closer to Wiltshire, than somewhere like Kelmscott.

We weren't at our best, but it was a vital win for us.

They defended well, their full backs had our wingers in their pockets for 90 minutes. We looked tired and i'm very glad we don't have a game on Tuesday.

Fods and Devera were our best players. Duffy was a cunt as well.

I saw someone having a word with one of the Cheltenham staff as he walked up the DRS, making some diving impressions, the guy looked pretty pissed off, i'm going to assume that was Posh Red  :)

I'm a bit shit on the rules of football beyond throw ins, goal kicks, corners etc (and I think most fans are if they are perfectly honest). I did think 'oh dear, we're going to have to defend the last corner of the game without our two centre backs, we're a bit fucked' and was very relieved to see that they were able to stay on.

On the subject of officials ineptitude, I just remembered an incident in the second half where Benson absolutely cleared out McGlashan right in front of us. He didn't get near the ball and McGlashan went about two feet in the air. The lino flagged but play went on and they never came back to it. It was a blatant yellow for Benson.

Then again, minutes before that he gave a free kick against Cibbocci in a really good position for Cheltenham for what looked like a perfectly good challenge. So on that occasion those two bits of numbskullery cancelled each other out.

Yeah apparently by losing to us yesterday Cheltenham proved they are the best side in the league.

Personally I think beating 2nd place whilst missing your captain/most influential player and playing 2 midfielders in defence AND playing pretty appallingly proves who is the best side in this league.

That and being 8 points clear of 2nd with 11 games to go.

Yeah, you're right, I normally have the same attitude but for some reason the Chelts reaction has wound me up. Especially the tweets from the Cheltenham Lib Dem MP.... I fucking hate politicians at the best of the time but the bitter crap he has spouted, coupled with the fact that when you reply back he just sends a picture of the Di Canio Lazio Nazi salute back to you (yawn)- it just smacks of childishness. You'd think he'd have more constructive things to do like fiddle some expenses or something.

Some examples of many -

The @football_league and @thefadotcom need to urgently look at the referee in today's Swindon v Cheltenham game. An awful display!

If we look at this from the same point of view as Cheatenham (the reversing Duffy/diving wingers et al) and pick one game to sum up the season then presumably they are lucky to be 2nd bearing in mind we should have beaten them at their place and for ages looked to me one of the worst teams Town played this season.

And yes the ref was absolutely shit.....for us!

According to the Cheltenham forum, they haven't sent anybody along with Marlon Pack to the FL awards tonight, do he is sat with our lot (including Ritchie). If ever there was a chance to lay some groundwork for so summer move, this is it! I suspect he'll be inundated with better offers though. He was superb yesterday.

I thought we were supposed to be the diving, whinging surround the ref cheats?  Did no one tell Chelt that thats our role?  They were doing it all game.

TO be fair they were good, had a lot of possesion by over running our midfield, but most importantly, our patched up defence didnt concede despite a crappy ref.

Well said Sonic. Reading through some of these posts is a little cringeworthy. It's pretty obvious why other teams supporters cast envious eyes in our direction. Everyone hates the team at the top, especially a team that when your team play them, look no better than yours. 'Why can't we do what they do?' is a question you ask yourself? 'If only we were consistantly getting results, it'd be us up there and not them' would be running through your mind.

And we all know this as most of us probably felt that way when Luton ran away with L1 a few years ago, and when Plymouth did likewise. We looked better than Luton that year, as did many sides, but Luton were stronger fitter and got results.

Let the other supporters think what they want, that's football.

Have to say though the actions of that Lib Dem MP annoys me though, he should have more important things to worry about rather than get involved with this sort of thing.

First half we were decent enough. We passed it well and kept possesion. Not really sure why the ref gave them a penalty as it looked like Duffy just fell into Risser although Risser did look as if he was holding him. The game changing moment was the penalty save from Wes and then a great ball from Chibo for another Benson goal a few minutes later.

Second half they battled more in midfield and won the ball far too often. They had all the possession but didnt.really create too much. Whilst we didnt get going we still produced 2 decent efforts on goal. Not a great performance overall but at this stage its the points that count. Winning when not playing great is becoming a nice habit for us.

I just think it's interesting to get a different perspective on our club. In fact, I find it quite fascinating to have a look on other clubs' boards to see how they view things. If other people don't give a fuck then that's fine.

You're right about Di Canio, he was admired by a lot of clubs' fans as a player and to be fair, a lot still do as a manager. It's just that you get the OTT, somewhat cretinous comments highlighted on here.

Duffy was looking to go down at every opportunity and I didnt think it was a pen then and even more so now I have seen it again, Soft is what I would call it. Cheltenham have adapted to become a good second division side but we were there for the taking yesterday especially second half and they blew it, that's what has pissed them off more than anything.

What I said was that Alfred was born in Berkshire, indeed Wantage, and as far as I'm concerned all of his ancestral lands are still in Berkshire....not fucking O*fordshire.

According to the Gloucester Citizen

'Cheltenham were superior in every department against a side who have been close to invincible at home this season, but they were unable to prevent them marching to their 13th consecutive victory at the County Ground.'

Now this sort of shit really pisses me off.  The standards of journalism in this country.  Let me rewrite it for you Gloucester Citizen

'It could be argued that in every department, apart from the all important scoring a goal and stopping goals being scored against you, Cheltenham were far superior.  They certainly had the edge in moaning at the referee and diving.'

But the follow up tackle from Duffy was dangerous and he should've been off.

They've totally bottled it now - 2 points in the last 7 matches - and I can't even see them making play-offs.
Their fans were saying for a long time that they wanted to get to 50 to avoid relegation asap as they have a habit of dropping badly in the second half of season.
The perils of having a small squad where by contrast we've had back-up to rotate players as necessary.
