Title: Wireless Adapter
Post by: Gethimout on Sunday, February 19, 2012, 21:56:30
Evening All,

I've been given the task (yes by the misses!) of finding a new wirelesss adapter for my girlfriend.

I'm not up to scratch with this... Her bedroom and computer is upstairs and the router downstairs and the wireless adapter is crap at the moment. Few questions...

Is there a stronger adapter that can used for a consistent connection?

Will any type of adapter work with any ISP?

Are there any decent adapters that are better than others?

Regards

What's the make and model of the router? Are you using a desktop or laptop computer? Why is the wireless adapter crap at the moment? What make and model of adapter is it currently?

Thanks Si for the help..

1) It's a talktalk router. Would there be specific model?

2) Desktop is being used upstairs

3) Wireless adapter doesn't detect the internet consistently. 10 minutes here and there. The iPad connects all the time though no problem.

4) Netgear adapter WG111T

Ah it looks like that has bad reviews and disconnections are a common issue. In my experience the netgear wi-fi cards have been unreliable.

Probably worth going for something like this, has solid reviews and should get good speeds (router dependent) and signal:

Im with talk talk and had the same issue. They provided me with a new router as long as I commited to a new year long contract. They knocked some money off my bill too. Ring themand moan andyou should get sorted out.

Also try changing the wireless channel in the router

If its a desktop upstairs then why not use ring main adapters (also called Home Plugs)?

I use these:

Just for balance, I have the exact same wireless adaptor, and it works just fine (with BT routers)

Your missus wants you to get a wireless adapter for your girlfriend?  A very understanding wife, I'd say.

I wish.... There are some things in this world that Carlsberg can't do!
