if STFCPlayer doesn't work then you won't be able to listen to the game any other way.

What internet browser are you using? Try using Internet Explorer and ensure that Flash is up to date ( http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ ).

It's our toughest test at home thus far in my opinion. Chances of keeping a clean sheet are slim because Crawley score for fun that said they are likely to have a go and that will leave holes at the back for us to exploit. Think we'll see a really good game tonight. None of this sitting back and hoping for a draw bollocks from the opposition. We certainly will be hoping for a win.

You'd think so but to be fair Crawley aren't nearly as prolific on the road as they are at home. While I agree I think they'll come at us that should hopefully work to our advantage.

They have some useful players, but then I'll be expecting something big from Rooney and Ritchie tonight. Big players need to step up in the big games.

Think we can do 'em, 3-2.

I think we'll miss PDC on the touchline tonight though with Evans fully exploiting his absence.  I can't beat the thought of them leaving with all 3 points.  Come on Town!!

Expecting a massive 200-300 to travel; most predicting a draw; the ref's the same we had for the Oxford loss, apparently.

For a traditionally Non-League club that has had it's league status artifically raised for a few years by lavish and unsustainable spending, that's actually not a bad following from West Sussex in mid-week.

Still can't believe that some people are still doubting this side - we have the best team for many a long year, the best manager too. Of course, we are not going to win every single game (I think), but why are people still doubters.

I have always found the last 5 minutes of Town games difficult to watch even if we are 2 goals up it always makes me nervous.

The number of games in the past that we have thrown away with 10 mins left on the clock, admittedly we have probably won almost as many games in the last 10 mins of games.

Being a Swindon supporter is always hard, a real roller coaster ride with some fantastic highs mixed in with some appalling lows.

In my 36 odd years of following Swindon I have seen
the good - 2 Championships, 4 promotions, 2 League Cup semi finals, 3 trips to Wembley (will be 4)
the bad - 6 relegation seasons, 1 demotion
the ugly - 2 administrations

But I still fucking love it, each new high makes up for a low, this season is turning into a real high, long may it continue.

If we're as good as we think we are we'll win this game and be top of the league by next Wednesday. I can't believe Southend are up there as they are shit. Haven't seen Crawley so I dont know if they are miles better than Southend or not.

Could really do with Flint today, Barnett will be a major threat tonight and with the pace of new signings Watt and Clarke attacking wise they are a huge threat.

Really hope Benson scores tonight, deserved a goal for his recent performances. Would like to see Cox play aswell, hes had 2 weeks now to get up to Paolo fitness and could push to start if hes done well in training.

Still can't believe that some people are still doubting this side - we have the best team for many a long year, the best manager too. Of course, we are not going to win every single game (I think), but why are people still doubters.

The club has been changed inside out, PdC has altered the very fabric of STFC

That's a bit of an extravagant claim...the reality is that di Canio has halted the slide, and restored a bit of pride. This, of course, is a worthy thing as it needed doing.  About 2 years ago we were turning over Leeds 3-0, with a youngish side under a respected and experienced manager, who seemed to be putting in some decent building blocks for the future. This proved a chimera, of which we've had a few down the years.  Going to take a bit more before your conclusion can be reached.

36 or so years for me too JJ and I share your sentiments completely, still hate the last 5 minutes unless we are at least 3 up, still expect the worst even when things are going well!

Thats a bit tough on Morrison. He is playing for Udders against Sheff Utd. I know he can be a bit of a liability at times, but to say he's intentionally playing for the opposition is a little rough!

Lecs is playing in that game too as is Danny Ward.

Shrewsbury quietly going about their business to move to 54 points.

When you take in to account form and games in hand, I think the top 3 will soon be Swindon, Torquay and Shrewsbury.  Southend, Crawley and Cheltenham have all started to stutter.  Oxford doing OK as well but play offs looking the best they can hope for at the moment (probably via a 7th place finish.)

This team goes from strength to strength.  This is our year.  Well done, lads.  Very proud.

PDC:
- Was aware that Crawley are a direct physical team
- Difficult to get ball down and play football
- 2nd half was better
- Didn't give Crawley any chances
- Town imposed themselves more and could have scored more
- Thanks to FA as it make it easier for him to see the game from the stands rather than having to watch the game again after the final whistle to analyse the game
- Pleased that Cibbocchi is improving. Especially after reassurance from PDC that he is wanted
- Said Davis yellow card should have been red. Bodin would have been away and one on one with keeper
- Complained about 4th official not penalising Evans for going into Town technical area, but warned Picarella for something minor

Just back, strange game!  Crawley realy had the better of the first half, Foderingham kept us in it with a couple of world-class saves, but the second half belonged solely to us.  Rooney looks a terrific prospect, I think I would have given mom to Foderingham.  Defence played well - again against possibly the biggest side in the league, some of there guys were built like brick shithouses.  They played to their strengths but were well beaten by a team with a lot more skill.

First half was fairly even, physical and scrappy. Loved the fact we celebrated the goal right in front of fat boy. First 10 aside I didn't think we looked too troubled. Great saves from fods aside.

Second half we opened them up and owned them.

Ref was nearly as shocking as their keeper.

Not the best of games actually but fantastic result. A lot of hoofing first half. Neither side really did much. We were struggling to get a grip on things in midfield but Paolo made yet another superb sub and called it early on when he took Ferry off for Cox. Game changed after that. They caused us problems with set pieces but Cibocchi took a superb free kick off the post/bar and the rebound is mopped up by Luke Rooney. Then 2 great saves from Wes keep us in the lead going into half time.

2nd half we just dominated. We slowed the game down and didn't rush things which is exactly what we needed to do. And then.....BOOM.....a simply superb goal from Billy Bodin. It literally came from nothing and he just smashed it from around 25 yards out and to the right of the pitch straight into the far corner. The keeper didn't even move, he simply had no chance. Would like to see it again because I think it may even be a contender for goal of the season. And then we began to play football. Crawley just couldn't break us down and then a superb trademark burst forward from McCormack lead to an easy tap in for Benson. 3-0. Job done.

Really impressed with Rooney, Bodin and McCormack tonight. McCormack really is superb at CB and his bursting runs forward cause teams so many problems. He's a rock. Bodin caused them problems all night long with his pace and skill. Rooney looks a real talent and he's only growing more confident, a goal tonight will really help him.

Oh and a special mention for Steve Evans....diddums. Shut the door behind you when you leave the circus tonight. What a prize cock.

Our march up the league goes on...

First things first, they were better than us in the first half, by some distance until our goal. They closed us down, they nullified Ritchie and Caddis, Barnett was superb holding up play.

Then there were 4 moments that changed the game: Our first goal, two saves from Foderingham (the second was superb, clawed back like his save earlier in the season - Jills I think), then a beaut from Billy. Has there been a better goal since Cox's Walsall goal?

Foderingham is as valuable to us as a twenty goal striker. They score that many, he saves them. People often say it's lucky if your keeper gets you out if trouble, but that's rubbish. We bought him, others didn't.

Lee Cox made a good first impression - kept the ball, seemed to sense where Ritchie and Caddis were in the same way Ferry does. I would hope and expect to see him play a big part during the run in.

Special mention for Evans as well. It's quite a sight, even from afar, watching this clammy, ruddy cheeked, odious, obese, heart attack waiting to happen jump up and down like a baby elephant doused in peroxide on speed. I envy people who get paid to work in football, but not him. I try not to hate people, and he's testing me.

Great result... McCormack was immense (he and Devera dealt with the aerial threat brilliantly), Bodin showed some excellent touches and scored a superb goal, and Benson won every header and ran the channels tirelessly - i'm glad he scored, he's been ace since we signed him. Cox was also very tidy and determined in the middle. Great night.

Fatboy's comments.....

CRAWLEY Town manager Steve Evans declared tonight’s 3-0 defeat at Swindon Town was the Reds’ worst display in 18 months.

Goals from Swindon’s Luke Rooney, Billy Bodin and Paul Benson saw the Robins leapfrog Crawley in the League 2 title race.

Evans said: “We don’t become bad players overnight, but they were bad tonight, it was our worst for 18 months.

“We were second best. We started alright, then the referee got involved, I can say the assessor said he will reporting Swindon, but listen, we got well beat.”

Two superb saves from Wes Foderingham just before the break preserved Swindon’s 1-0 lead which they went to build on in the second half.

“We should score,” Evans added. “I don’t think we looked on the front foot and up for the battle and that’s not like us.”

Evans just filled his starting eleven with thugs and set out to get under the skin of everyone, fans, ref, players - even the tramp sleeping under Stratton bank.

"Kuipers made his first save on 17 minutes when he held Benson's header and moments later Claude Davis was booked for bringing down Billy Bodin just inside the Swindon half as the home crowd somewhat optimistically called for a red card"

The only thing about that challenge on Bodin was that it was so far out it would be very difficult for him to score from there. That said he would have been clean through had he not been taken down. As a ref how do you call it? Letter of the law says red but realistically it wasn't an out and out goalscoring chance.

Evans disgusted me tonight trying to get our players sent off. Devera had a great game tonight as well as Foderingham Macca & Rooney.

Cox impressed me tonight and he harried the Crawley players of the ball and made some neat passes too.  Will be key in our run up to the season and so many games so close together

Could not believe the ref bottled sending their player off after the Bodin trip.

Unbelievable time wasting from Crawley from the very first minute. Why? The ref helped them disrupt the game, which led to a poor first 30 minutes. But once we got the breakthrough I thought we showed the gulf in class. They could have given Man of the match to any Swindon player on the pitch and everyone in the ground would still have clapped.

They were still quite dangerous. Will probably still be top 3 (if they get their number 1 goalie back).

And the 'youve got that fat bloke, weve got Di Canio' chant was one of the few football chants that actually made me laugh.

Fan-bloody-tastic.

They really broke up play in the first half, and our players let Evans and his cheating players get to them. Defence did really well to survive the pressure at the end of the first half. Get the feeling their game plan relied on scoring from a set piece.

Once we got the second goal we taught them a bit of a lesson.

Ref and Arkells side lino were appalling. Was he the ref that took the Oxord game? If so he forgot his cards that match too.

Top of the league incredibly tight - just got to keep winning!

Superb description.  We had the rear view of him from the Arkells and him and his sidekick never stopped.  It was real comedy value at times in the second half and I loved Caddis purposely celebrating all 3 goals in front of him after he'd been yapping at him in the first half.  Vile man and he must be a prime candidate for a heart attack?

Great result, once again proving that however well we are doing, I still have little faith before a big match.  Sorry lads!  The first half was bad tempered and nervy not helped by yet another piss poor referee.  Two class saves from Wes ensured we went in with the goal lead intact.

To be honest, I thought the second half was going to be a tight and nervy affair, but once young Billy scored, they were never really in it.  A good all round team performance and brilliant to see that changes to the starting line-up can be made without upsetting the balance of the team.

Last season was a chore, this season is a pleasure.  I just wish it wasn't still so tight at the top.

Sounded as if we were outplayed today. JB was complementing how well they were playing on reds player.

As others said, a combination of poor finishing and bad luck meant we weren't level at HT and if we were there was always a good chance we'd get something from the game.

I guess it's not that bad to lose to the Man City of league 2. Like them, they seem to be able to field different players every game and still bl00dy win! Evil or Very Mad

Losing to Swindon with their scumbag fascist manager is hard to take, but we're still in the mix for promotion and we are capable of finishing in the top 3 although we may have to settle for 2nd or 3rd.

Crawley are really the most offensive team Ive seen at the CG for some time.  As someone else said Cambridge in 92 were the last team who caused such hatred by coming here not to play football but horrible horrible hoofball.  Players were also horrible, time wasting from the first minute and that keeper took every kick from hand a good 2 feet out of the box.  Their striker also had the cheek to bung his hands in the air when Wes was taking his time in the second half.

We were under pressure from those tactics, but we managed to get it under control and showed them that the game is called football and can be played on the ground sometimes.

Had Paolo acted the way that graceless, murderer of real football, Evans did, the ref would have probably found a way to send him off 12 times during the match.

Very very happy to have done over those despicable cunts twice this season.  Just hope they stay down get revealed to be cheating on the cash front and return to conference, at least while the crooked bobby davro is in charge.

£32 to watch that against Stoke?  Jesus.  If that ends up televised frankly Id rather pluck my scrotum than watch it.

And I managed to do the whole game with my kids without swearing.  A herculean effort.

Losing to Swindon with their scumbag fascist manager is hard to take, but we're still in the mix for promotion and we are capable of finishing in the top 3 although we may have to settle for 2nd or 3rd.

Oh get over it and imagine how we would have felt if we'd lost to Crawley and their fat crooked cheating vile manager.  Good job we didn't then really!  And what exactly has Paolo done to earn him a scumbag tag?  Jealousy, because I bet they all secretly hate Evans.

Im sorry what? thats coming from a Crawley fan wow I've heard it all now.

Anyway brilliant game, sat two rows infront of Paolo and its just hilarious listening to the guy scream every 5 seconds he was up on his feet every 2 or 3 minutes. Bodin's goal was incredible, Cibbochi's freekick was brilliant and he was unlucky, great finish by Rooney though, McCormack's brilliant play made the third goal.

Overall fucking delighted, so happy to beat that vile piece of shit Evans, his constant moaning was a disgrace thank god Paolo was in the stands tonight, he could of been sent off very quickly with "it" down there.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the 'Paolo give us a wave' moment....I have never seen a manager wave whilst confined to the stands before, the Arkell's cheered as if we had scored a goal and proceeded to actually sing.

Paolo can even get the Arkell's going!

I presume those fans haven't seen the disgraceful behaviour that Evans and his troglodytes get up to.

I feel the same as when we dicked Cambridge all those years ago.  Its a victory for football of a sub human approximation of football.

I see the Pox had a massive 5,653 tonight perhaps they are all saving up for their cup final on the 3rd March. With seven of the next 10 games at home where we look so strong we could be out of sight by the time we go to Wembley.

Great game - football wasn't incredible throughout but it was a fiery and unpredictable game, and a cracking atmosphere to boot.

Foderingham 9 - Some top notch saves, and certainly earned his clean sheets, just a couple of dodgy punches
Caddis 8 - Up and down the right all night, good crosses, good runs, and gave some back to Evans
Devera 7 - pretty solid
McCormack 9 - The man is a class act, never looks worried under pressure
Cibocchi 8 - Great free kick, and did well throughout the game
Ritchie 8 - Very good up and down the wing, strong presence against physical opposition, and plenty of good balls into the box too
Ferry 6 - Didn't play long and was apparently ill
Smith 7 - Did his usual, working hard, putting tackles in and enabling others to play
Rooney 7 - A bit slow getting into the game but then was fantastic, taking players on, putting balls into the box and looking a threat in front of goal
Benson 7 - Worked very hard up front hassling their defenders, and deserved his goal
Bodin 7 - Had a very tough job but worked hard, pressured the opposition, and WHAT A GOAL

Cox 8 - Very impressive. Came on and battled with Crawley, playing them at their own game. Really got stuck in and showed some nice touches too

As for Evans, if what Paolo said about their antics is true, then it's hardly surprising.

1st half sat there feeling really nervous even after going one up but loved every minute of the 2nd half. Not a dull moment and some of the songs were brilliant. " we've got Di Canio " " you've got a fat cunt " Crawley were a strong side but only had one way of playing, direct. Things are looking better game by game.

I'm starting to like him.

I fucking love cibocchi

Just got in. Even first half half, did well to go in ahead. Town teams of old would have buckled under the pressure from crawley at the end but we held firm.

Those saying it was a red need to pipe down. It's not a clear goalscoring oppourtunity when it's on the halfway line, 3 chasing defenders in close proximity. I'd have been fuming if it was given against us.

Second half we seemed to handle crawleys arial threat a lot better - props to the back four. Bodins goal was peng.

Cox looked handy when he came on. Good signing that. Interesting to see where that leaves ferry.

Evans is a cunt, and crawley are an ugly (but effective) league two side. I didn't think they were overly dirty, but they were a lot more physical than any side i've seen here this season. Our fans constant whinging did begin to grate at times, but it's a minor gripe.

1 point off top, with two games in hand. It's ours to lose

Pipe down? I think it is a fair call. The only redeeming factor for the ref was he was a long way from goal. I am 100% certain he was through on goal, 100%. But I can see being that far our the ref could have reasonable doubts. Worth a debate though.

Quote
Ferry 6 - Didn't play long and was apparently ill

Gave the ball away more times yesterday than the rest of the season combined. Liked the look of Cox, but it'll take him a little while to settle, Ferry is still a loss.

Thought Smith had a good game yesterday too. Then the all did.

Somebody said Torquay have 41/48 points, phenomenal. We have 39/48, equally phenomenal, and when you see we have played  3 fewer home games we are looking good if we don't lose our heads.

I also love Cibo, he's quickly becoming a class act.

I don't think we need worry about Ferry. The fact he's started the last 2 games, when ill, shows the kind of esteem di Canio holds him in. If this was early in the season then I'd agree, because he looked like being shipped out. Now, however, I think Di Canio understands topboi and sees him as the key player he is.

The only thing about that challenge on Bodin was that it was so far out it would be very difficult for him to score from there. That said he would have been clean through had he not been taken down. As a ref how do you call it? Letter of the law says red but realistically it wasn't an out and out goalscoring chance.

If it wasn't a clear goalscoring chance then he shouldn't be sent off.  If it was he should have been.  I guess the ref thought the distance to goal meant it wasn't a clear chance.

Equally though if the tackle hadn't happened Bodin would have been through which would probably have lead to a one on one situation. A tough call indeed for the ref but his overall performance and the linesman were below below making some bizarre decisions

I can't remember if I said it here already but fuck it.

Crawley absolutely disgust me - from top to bottom that club, its management and players are an insult to any professional club or player the world over. I look forward to the day that they sink back to non league without a trace.

As for us, well, we were just fucking superb all over the pitch. Once we adjusted to Crawleys "style" and sussed them out, they stood absolutely no chance. Super Wes had to make those 2 unbelievable saves just before half time and it was from then that I knew we'd go on to win.
Absolutely made up for Billy, what a stunning finish from a fantastic talent.

Did anyone else realise Sanchez Watt was playing? and what's all the fuss about Claude Davis? Anyone would have thought they were fighting for survival the way they set up and went about time wasting from the off. Even Bradford gave it more of a go.

Onwards and fucking upwards. We won't lose for the rest of the season.

Had a quick skim through this thread this morning and well summed up by all thought I'd just add my two penneth...

Getting harder to single players' performances out as the whole team is performing so well at the moment. McCormack though is becoming the embodiment of Di Canio's Swindon and is certainly the frontrunner for Player of the Season.

Foderingham's two saves at the end of the first half were absolutely different class (particularly the second one), and the game could have been very different had we gone in level at half time. I was worried we were going to struggle with their physical bully boy tactics during the first half, but Devera was winning every header from their long throws and once we settled into playing our football there was only one winner.

Think Cibocchi has improved hugely and has a brilliant left foot - unlucky not to score that free kick that led to our first goal.

Ferry was clearly not right and never got in the game before he went off, Cox did look a useful addition when he came on, almost got caught in possession a couple of times but has really quick feet and was able to get himself out of trouble.

Very happy for Bodin, cracking strike and hopefully the club offer him a long term contract as soon as possible. (With the foul on him in the first half - he might have been through had he not been brought down but you'll never get a straight red given for that on the halfway line)

All in all just like Southend it was a much better result than I'd hoped for and our position in the league is looking very strong. The league is finally in our own hands.

I know the season's got a way to go yet, and I'm danger of getting carried away but I can't resist. Some choice quotes from earlier this season:

May 2011 (http://www.gazetteandherald.co.uk/news/9055189.AFC_Wimbledon_boss_has_dig_at_Swindon_s_Di_Canio/?ref=mr):

Quote
AFC Wimbledon boss Terry Brown has issued a bizarre dig at Swindon Town’s decision to appoint Paolo Di Canio as the club’s new manager, claiming the Italian will struggle to sign the required players.
“I think I know more about the second division than Paolo Di Canio does,” he said.

“I am sure all Swindon fans are incredibly excited about having an Italian legend as their manager but some of them must be asking themselves what he knows about this level - where is he going to get his players from?

“It is a league I know a lot about and I know almost all the managers and have watched a lot of games this year,” he added.

“I know the calibre of players we need and I would say we do need to be a bit stronger physically. If he thinks he is going to get players of his calibre and skill then he is mistaken - he won’t.”

November 2011 (http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Port-Vale-Di-Canio-learn-league-quickly-says-Grew/story-13721969-detail/story.html):

Quote
"I heard Di Canio talking about the way Bradford play, saying they are very physical," said Pope.

"But he's managing in League Two – if he doesn't want to see physical 'in-your-face football' he should go back to Cloud Cuckoo Land where people wear tutus and dance around each other.

"At this level it's about working hard and putting plenty of challenges in.

"That's the top and bottom of it. If he wants to think his players can't be kicked, he's in the wrong job."

From September 2011 (http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/9237147.Evans_fires_Di_Canio_warning/):

Quote
STEVE Evans is relishing the 'Paolo Di Canio circus' rolling into Crawley next week, but warned the Swindon boss he will not stand for his touchline theatrics.

"As long as we don't see the kind of scenes we saw on Sky over the last few weeks I'm looking forward to going up against him.

"But when you see a manager clashing with his own players then it suggests that something is wrong.

From September 2011 (http://www.rotherhamadvertiser.co.uk/news/90117/i-didn-t-enjoy-it-says-millers-chief.aspx)

Quote
ROTHERHAM United's defeat at Swindon Town on Saturday has left a bitter taste with manager Andy Scott.

Scott said: "I didn't enjoy it at all. From start to finish we didn't play very well.  There was a lot of histrionics and you had people rolling around and their bench was like a pantomime but I knew that was what we were going to walk into.

And this from WSC June 2011 (http://www.wsc.co.uk/content/view/7335/38/):

Quote
The brainless appointment of Paolo Di Canio

The qualities many British football fans seem to admire most are those that bear a similarity to the contents of the average supermarket sausage: heart, lungs, guts, balls. A wide range of offal treats then, with the notable exception of brains. These characteristics are often corralled under the heading "passion" and enjoy an enduring reverence in spite of the humiliations routinely handed out to our national teams by countries who prefer to concentrate on things like "passing", "controlling the ball" and "not picking Gareth Barry". So when Paolo Di Canio stated in his first press conference at Swindon Town that he wanted "to have all players with two big bollocks", he was preaching to the choir.

On purely football terms, the appointment is...questionable. Di Canio has not been involved in English football since 2004 and would presumably struggle to recognise a League Two player if he trod on his jackboots.

To coin a phrase popular among cynical wedding guests, I give it six months.

Yeah chaps close the door on the way out, particularly Evans if he can fit through it first.

Went to the game last night. Not as cold as last Tuesday but still chilly.

I think Crawley slightly edged us for the first 30. Very phyiscal at the back and we struggled to hold it up at times. Once we got the first goal, it settled us and we ran the show from then! The defense is solid, midfield battle and close down so much and the strikers look for runs in behind or to feet. Brilliant to see.

McCormack's run was amazing up the left hand side that led to the goal. Personally think Cox coming on made a difference. Ferry had 2-3 fuck up with about 10 mins, kept getting caught with it!

Evans is still a cunt and always will be. Not happy about some of his players cropping Matt Ritchie.

Should it of been a sending off when billy was through? I think it would be been harsh as the full backs would of covered round. Didn't stop me shouting - OFF, OFF, OFF!!!

The other thing to bear in mind is, that the last 2 games against 2 of the so-called better team in League 2, their managers have both said after getting dicked that it was their worst performances of the season.

So not only are we beating the top sides, our football is nullifying virtually all threats from the opposition.

We didn't win both these games just because Southend and Crawley had an off-day - I reckon we now have the 'fear factor'. Teams are beaten before a ball is kicked.

I also note the Yellowbellies are preparing themselves for a right royal stuffing. One quote from their forums:

'If Kerrouche is one of their cast-offs, it could be humiliating on March 3rd'

Now that's what I really want - HUMILIATION

I'm sorry but I still think it was a red. The rest of their defence was further forward and Billy took a great touch past their last man - he has the pace to turn that touch into a goal scoring chance. They keeper was already way off his line and would have no doubt come further out but fuck it - he got an even better goal 2nd half and we spanked the cunts while they had 11 on the field.

I am very proud to be a Swindon fan.

Havent had a run of results like this since Muckmarn and before him Macari, it feels wierd and almost wrong, but long may it continue.

We have the basis of a side that can go to the Championship if we can keep them together, there are very few weak spots in the team at all, we work as a team and play as a team and fight as a team, not like last season when we had a team of individuals and it showed, but we have the galvanzing effect of having the best manager and motivator outside of the premier league in Paolo.

Loving it.

I think some are missing the point on the red card. I don't think it should have been a red because of denying a goalscoring opportunity, I think it was red because of a professional foul.  Bodin knocked it past him and he just sythed his legs from under him without getting anywhere near the ball.

I am glad that it wasn't red in the end though, nicer beating them whilst no excuses can be made.

Well beaten by (in the second half) a side who worked harder and were more committed than us, but Paolo and his passion - if that means surrounding the referee every time a player commits a foul? Do you think you are Man Utd, bit of a disgrace that with Caddis and Ritchie leading the attempts to get people sent off. The attempt to get Davis sent off for a foul on the halfway line was pathetic, a clear goalscoring chance with 50yd + still to go!!!.
Deserved win though and quite impressive atmosphere and nice to see a team who are not land of the giants like Cheltenham, but the most depressing second half I have witnessed for a long time and not the best £120 I have spent on Valentines day (me and two boys total spend on the night with Swindon rip off prices, coach etc)!

Home fans paid £25 and got value for money. It's not our fault his team didn't provide the same level of enjoyment for him.

JJ are they saying anything of interest today?

Quote
Crap back down to earth with a bump. Can't believe anyone in this league could beat us 3-0 twice.

Quote
Swindon were better! We were poor! Didn't take chances and got punished! Generally felt it lacked a bit of grit and want from us!

Tactically they got it right and we got it wrong!

If their keeper hadnt kept out our best chances might have been different but their goalie made some terrific saves and for me was the difference...also our defence was just 2nd best

Quote
Final thoughts on the way home.

I didn't think that Swindon were that great, however they wanted it more than us. They took their chances and we didn't and that was the difference.

First and third goals from forwards totally unmarked, the second from Kuipers errors.

Too many players off par today. Kuipers looked like a player nearing the end of his career - nervous handling and feeble kicking. Hunt was taken apart by Rooney (who was playing for Lewes on loan only a year or so ago). Torres a yard off the pace so the middle 3 were overrun. Watt may have a good touch but he didn't look up for the battle tonight. Clarke, lightweight and wasted all the set pieces on the left (leave them to Howells next game). Hawley only had 30 mins so harsh to judge but missed an excellent chance. Nielsen, had no impact as a sub and not good enough for league football.

Down to 5th as a result, 2 games in hand but we need to start winning a few with fixture congestion coming up.

We missed a creative spark in midfield.
A disappointing might but we move on, after the 3-0 at home we went on a good run and we can do that again.

Quote

Quote
Well, that was poor, particularly for £25!

First half was fairly even and we could have gone in at half time 1 - 1. alternatively, we could have gone in down to 10 men.

Second half, I was expecting a better reaction, but Swindon closed us down and didn't let us play. instead we just lobbed the ball forward in the general direction of the front two. Over the two games, Swindon had clearly done their homework.

it looked like too many players had an eye on the match this weekend. Barnett struggled and Watt hardly won a single header.

Still, not the worst I've seen them play this season.

Quote
A game of 2 halfs, first half we looked quite lively, poor refereeing decision and there goalkeeper were the only reason we were behind at half time.
2nd half we never got going. This was my second visit to Swindon, my last visit was in 1994 Swindons glory year! Nothing has changed since then, and they obviously still think they are in the Premier league charging £25 to get in. Still onwards and upwards im sure both clubs will be in league 1 next season. Bring on the Stoke!

Quote
We had the better of the opening minutes then an injury to Howell knocked us out of our stride and most of the rest of the first half Swindon looked livelier. After their first, the Ref (and especially the Lino) missed what looked a blatant hand ball for a penalty, and we had some good efforts on goal saved well by Foderingham. After the break we weren't really in it and I couldn't believe I was watching mostly the same team that tonked Cheltenham and Hull. Hey Ho, a battle lost but still in the war.

Kuipers looked very tentative but then he hasn't played for 5 months.

Still think we'll make the play-offs at least.

Quote
Went to the game last night to be honest we got played off the park, Swindon were the better team.
So we start again lets the look mto the future we are still in a good place.

Quote
A disappointing result, not so much for the loss (we were always going to struggle to get anything) but the way it was so emphatic. Loss of morale and loss of goal difference.

But we move on.

If only we had a pressure-free, win-win, high profile match to get our minds off the league next...

Quote
I am dissapointed by last night, but I can't say I was suprised.
I know the league is more important, logic tells you it is.
But I must say I can't get my mind of the dream, (I know its impossible Stoke are a premier league side!) but if we win Sunday we will be in the 6th round of the FA cup !

If the players feel like me I can't blame them for being a little distracted and not putting in a great performance last night.

Quote
And to cap it all our best player Pablo (imo) had to come off injured, he will be a huge loss for the Stoke game if it is serious, anybody know yet?
One good thing though with only a "modest" turn out of 260, it proves what a romantic lot Crawley fans are (either that or broke for some a month of trekking the length and breadth of the country?!)

Thats pretty much all of it today.

Thought that was a great performance last night. Crawley came for a draw and tried to slow the play right down, players going down every 5 mins and saying down, goalie taking an age to kick the ball and that's how it started off. Obviously. Crawley's tactics are to kick their way out of the division all their players were big and physically built but for all the pressure they applied initially you always knew they were gonna tire. Particularly this happened in the second half and the town fully capitalised with some great goals.

I imagine Evans will be reporting Swindon due to Rooney as his first goal he celebrated right in front of the evans and then out his finger to his mouth looking towards the Crawley fans and the. For the second everyone else was celebrating over in front of the don rogers stand and Rooney came over to Evans and had another few words.

Ps I thought the town end sang brilliantly and had me and my dad in fits of laughter with the lyrics. Evans complaining about the referee is a bit rich and I thought he might have had a crawley shirt on underneath.

One other point in the game that I particularly liked was when the town end were sing to DiCanio to give us a wave, and he actually acknowledge the chant which in my experience was a first and he got just as big a chant as when the goals went in.

It was. Massive game for us and one we made looked easy!

He did, Evans was trying to wind him up  after the foul on Bodin and then again a few minutes after that.   We saw it clearly from the Arkells, the fourth official didn't or chose to ignore it.

Another example of what a pathetic man Evans is.  The stick he got last night was fully deserved.  My 8 year old spent most of the second half in fits of giggles from watching him waving his arms around and at one point making a stamping motion with his foot several times and nearly toppling over whilst doing it.  He thoroughly enjoyed the singing as well, although I've had to warn him that singing 'you fat bastard' in public is not allowed!

I think it was too early in the game for the ref to give a red, if it wouldhave been later in the second half he might have been more tempted.

Still, better that we stuffed them with 11 anyway.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Crawley Official Matchday Thread

Just saw the highlights, there was no way any ref would send a player off for a tackle in an opponents half for a challenge like that. He would likely have been caught as there were 3 other covering defenders not that far away.

No doubts about Benson being a yard offside for his disallowed goal, pretty poor miss by Benson from a header that if it was on target would have beaten the clown in goal, just needed a bit better contact.

Excellent free kick from Cibbo a real piledriver and shot very cool in his finish picking his spot perfectly.
Cracking shot by Caddis stopped by Benson in front of goal.

2 brilliant pieces of keeping by Fodders close to half time, the 2nd save was awesome.

Excellent vision by Bodin for his goal, keeper totally flatfooted had no chance, not quite the quality of a Cox goal but still for his first at the CG it was a good finish.

Brilliant run by McCormack for the 3rd goal and glad that Benson managed to pop up at the end and finish nicely and was in no way even remotely looking like being offside with a couple of players playing him on.

Lovely effort by Ritchie near the end well saved but the follow up could easily have been put in by Smith had he jumped a little sooner but hes not a striker so hes allowed that one.

On another day Benson could easily have had a hattrick.

Still think, having watched it again, the ref bottled it.

The defenders were spread and at least 2 to 3 yards behind him he was at full pace and they were not, they were at recovery pace.

Would have been one on one with the keeper a long time before any other defender was anywhere near him.  The other centre back is the one defender who is anywhere near getting up to pace is not even in the picture when Bodin is tripped.  May be a long way put but its a clear goal scoring opportunity.  I would have like to have seen it given just to see the fat bobby davro going apoplectic with rage until his head exploded all over the arkells.

We'll probably see the same situation happen next week in the premier league against Man U and the player will be sent off and banned for 4 games.  Rules schmules.

Anyway, didnt happen, we still dicked them.  Huzzah.

Was right behind the Bodin goal, it was in all the way! Also McCormack was excellent, he's been a real revelation at CB, defended fantastically, he's quick and at 5ft 8 won every header. Going forward he's was frightening aswell, my player of the year. Caddis and Ritchie down the right were excellent all night aswell, Ritchie was really unlucky not to score at the end, what a strike. Great time to be a town fan, long may it continue.

For me Caddis and McCormack are our 2 best defenders since Calderwood and Kerslake, I have a feeling that Flint can become almost as good as Taylor in time, if he can improve his passing and short distance pace somewhat.

Looking good defensively for the first time in years, if Cibocchi continues to improve as well we will have a great back 4 for the first time since Hoddle really and with Devera filling in as well it does look good with the fantastic Fodders in goal, lovely.

Totally agree with the high praise McCormack is getting on here. He has been different class at centre half and looks like he has played there his whole career. He is great in the air, calm, positionally spot on and quality on the ball.
Toss up between him Caddis and Richie so far for player of the year. Plenty of games to go yet though.

He does seem to fall off balance a lot but never, or hardly ever, falls over his own feet with the ball, ungainly i think is the term!
Unlike one of the Crawley players who thought he would join in with the Circus and fall over his own feet.

The club only have to pay for police inside the ground don't they? So it's the taxpayer whose money is beign wasted. (Not that our club don't pay their tax nowadays...)

Thanks for that... He does seem to be through on goal despite being in his own half.
You can't say that 'because he's running with the ball he'll be slower than the running defenders' because that completely differs on players.. If you kick and chase, you're going to be running pretty normal pace anyway. And chasing the ball gives more of a motivation.

Tough one anyhow to judge. Yellow is probably fair, given we'd be pretty annoyed if McCormack got sent off for something similar.

But if he 'kicks and chases' then one of the main components for an 'obvious goal scoring oppotunity' is not met - he doesn't have full control of the ball.

Just think back a few games weeks ago. Cahill got sent off near the half-way line...the red card got rescinded. Not many refs will send off for that, there's just too much doubt, especially in a big game with clowns v crooks.

Anyway, Bodin may knock the ball past Davis, but he hasn't got full control of it so he'll lose time and space bringing it under control, and the full backs aren't that far away either. It isn't an obvious goal scoring oppotunity, but it was cynical so it can only be yellow (obviously, it's all about opinions, which is why all referees are shit -   their opinions and interpretations are always wrong...)

It looks more of a red on the highlights than it did at the time (from my view in the Town End) and I thought it was a red at the time as well.

Anyway, we won by three goals so I'm happy anyway :)

I have a hunch that Bodin would have dribbled towards the goal and taken a shot. I know, that's a pretty new wave way of playing league two football, but players can't always turn and hold the ball up.

Many would argue that many penalties are not real goalscoring chances(the fouls leading to them).but the rules are rules and if he is the last man through on goal who is to say he couldn't have gone on to score,it would have been harsh but i have a sneaky feeling if the roles had been reversed at Crawley a certain pieman Evans would have been crying for a red.

Quote
Sending off offences

Denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by  an offence punishable by a free kick or penalty kick

From the view I had I have absolutely no doubt he had created a goalscoring opportunity.

If that tackle had happened midway in the opponents half it would have been red. But I am convinced it would have been just as clear cut chance from where he was, both "covering" players were ahead of the ball, flat footed and nowhere near the centre of the pitch.

If the ref had a different viewpoint being at pitch level I can see he may have thought differently, even though he was wrong.

As somebody else pointed out, I'm glad he didn't send him with hindsight. It makes our St Valentine's day massacre of Creepy more legitimate.

When the last opposing defenders are deeper than you in your half. The second picture shows how far Billy would have been infront of their defenders had he been able to stay on his feet.

I know it wasn't a foul as such, but remember a couple of weeks ago when Man City broke against Wigan and Figueria (sp) handballed when he was the last man. Only a yellow was given then, so I can understand why it was given.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Crawley Official Matchday Thread

I think a yellow was the right decision. It was not a clear goalscoring opportunity as Bodin had half of the length of the pitch to go. A tackle on the half way line does not deny a clear goalscoring opportunity even if at that point he is marginally the last man.
That said, why our players have been reported and the club fined £1000 when Creepies players acted as bad if not worse is downright stupid.

I would say it was 'possibly' a goalscoring opportunity, not 'obviously' or 'clearly', so can see why only a yellow was issued. At the time, my reaction was much different!

It was the lack of yellows for cynical trips and tugs (mainly on Ritchie) which seem to be generally accepted as definite yellows most games, which irritated me.

Having only seen the foul on Bodin from the pics in an earlier page, it did look like a red IMO as he would have been clear on goal and that is a goalscoring opportunity. More annoyed that Evans hasnt had any punishment handed to him than the lack of red card to Davis.
