Title: Barnet Vs Swindon Matchday Thread.
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 03:05:55
I'm back in Plymouth,

I'm pretty drunk and i've just had a burger that cost me £3.50 but feels like the greatest thing in the world right now.

absolutely gutted i cant go to this tomorrow. 6 hour train ride theere and back...

Still reckon we've got this in the bag.

2-0 Town.

Happy Days!

I think it'll be tighter than a nun's chuff with mental and physical fatigue playing a part. 1-0 Barnet in an after the Lord Mayor's show display.

Then we'll win 3-1 at the CG after going 1-0 down.

Be tight, they've earned their place, and league position goes out of the window. Also we've never done well there so will be happy with a draw, but we should have enough to bring a 1 goal lead back to the CG.

This one's on TV as well innit?

I've seen Swindon live more this season alone so far than in the entire previous 11 years or so I've been away from Blighty.

Loving the PDC factor. Loving it.

Will take a draw tonight. A win, even by one goal, would be fantastic.

Sure there will be a bit of a hangover from Saturday, and as mentioned it's not exactly a happy hunting ground for us.

Would happily take a draw tonight, but hopefully the return of a pissed up SWS thread start will make the difference.

PdC to rotate the squad, and we will grind out a 0-0.

Devera, Cibocci and Gabilondo to start the match.

Has Billy Bodin played in the for either us or Torquay? If he isn't cup tied he might make an appearance on the bench as well.

Will be a tough test tonight. A boring 0-0 would do me fine, but the travelling support will want to see an action packed 90 minutes!

Wouldn't mind Benson starting in place of Murray, assumming he's not too short of match fitness.

It would be nice to freshen things up a bit, what with Saturday in mind.

Devera to start against his former club? Give McCormack a rest? Maybe not....

I don't think anyone has said that they would want to rest players - just guessing that PdC will. Whatever he says, the most important competition we are in is the league.

Resting one, potentially two, in the first leg of a cup competition, what with having to play 3 games in a week, wouldn't be suicidal.
Like someone else has touched on, ideally I wouldn't change the team, but we may have too, depending on fitness. Who knows. (Other than Di Canio!)

We had an initial allocation of 1,500 with an on the night 1,000 also available, so I doubt we will get anywhere near that figure of 2,500 in all honesty.

Could well be right I was just posting what I had been told which was not official, but I do know that the away end at Barnet does hold just under 2,100 and we have 200 seats as well, so your figure could well be right.

It's going to be hard for the players to lift themselves after Saturday but this is arguably the more important game. I'm not expecting a pretty game and I'd surprised if we came away with anything better than a draw or narrow defeat.

Don't think lifting themsleves will be a problem. Sides loosing after great wins just seems to happen. Hopefully we will buck that trend.
Thinking about it,making a few changes might be an idea, plus Connell only played an hour on sat and Benson should be chomping at ther bit for a start. Bodin maybe given a game?

I read an interview about Paul Benson made last year by a Daggers fan site when he was at Charlton, and he got the question: What is your least favourite opponent and least favourite ground. The answer was Barnet and Underhill because he never won there and had some injuries there.

So maybe that's the reason why Paul isn't in the squad tonight!

Benson isn't match fit to play 2 games in 4 days according to Gary Rose. Makes sense to keep him fresh for Saturday.

Also makes sense to rest Kennedy and not give De Vita and Connell a full 90 I guess.

Or maybe it's because, having not played regularly for over three months, two games in three days might be a bit much for him just yet?

Di Canio doesn't strike me as superstitious in any way, so the above reason seems a lot more plausible to me.

Radio suggesting that Benson has a minor knock, nothing to worry about but left out of the 16- he did travel and is warming up.

Its not a negative but more an observation - he put a few in to touch on Saturday. I wonder if his brief was to wang it out wide, but there is a small margin of error of course.

Although I'll think about more after this game... There's only 6 points between us and Rotherham. We need a big performance on Saturday.

Just back from the game. Not a great performance really. Apparently the commentators were very kind to Magera - I thought he was poor. Didn't win headers, didn't make good runs... He showed a few nice touches, and was involved in the move which sent Ferry free, but on the whole he was disappointing. I would have had Connell on much sooner to be honest.

In fact, the whole team were just a little below par tonight. Mistakes at the back that we haven't been seeing lately, not much joy down the wings, forwards not holding it up, and the midfield going missing from time to time. Still, probably best to put it down to a bit of fatigue and one of those days, and look ahead to the second leg. With a full team firing on all cylinders we will beat them.

Oh, and I should also say, fantastic support fromt he town fans. Great numbers, a lot of noise, a few funny new chants (responding to "You're Welsh and you know you are" with "You're French and you know you are" was a personal favourite) and generally a lot of support for the lads. Let's hope we can get a big crowd in for the 2nd leg!

Ditto to the above, I would like to add fair play to barnet, they pressed us all game and disrupted our normal way of playing, no way will they finish bottom half if they keep playing like that. Would aslo like to say to any Barnet fans looking at this, good luck to danny Senda. Looked innocuous at first, but soon became clear he was in trouble, hope it's not a career ending injury.

I didn't think Magera was any worse than anyone else. Murray sbowed very little. Hopefully the time on the pitch will do them both good. Unlike some, they need more, not fewer games.

And as for Senda, I remember watching him years ago at Wycombe and he was superb. Surprised he didn't go further in the game. Best of luck to him.

I thought the general taunting of Magera tonight with ironic 'One Alan Connell' chants was fucking embarassing.

The guy can not win headers at the moment and is obviously low on confidence, but his overal effort levels are good, he has neat and quick feet and he's a fucking handful when he's got the ball.

He had a hand in the goal tonight and did a decent job for us on Saturday when he came on - so why fucking abuse one of our own players, risking the complete demolition of any remaining confidence he has left in him?

I just dont get it.

Why the fuck would you do that to one of our own players, let alone one that our idolised manager seems to think is good enough to appear for us on a regular basis?

Also, how many of the cunts getting on his back would argue, face-to-face, with PDC that Magera a complete cunt and deserves to be abused while he's playing for us?

Most, if not all of the spineless cunts would either shut the fuck up like some fucking pussy, or just run a fucking mile.

Just back after a frustrating evening. Fair play to Barnet for pressing us especially in the first half which didn't allow us to get any momentum going. Didn't expect it to be easy and predicted a score draw but confident we will win the home leg. All the best to Senda, we must be a bad jinx for him as I think he was playing for Millwall when he broke his leg as mentioned down near the town end. Why didnt the stewards just open the terrace behind the goal earlier to save all the hassle. :hmmm:

Magera actually played well first half - won quite a few headers and showed some good link up play

Lots of individual mistakes (from them as well) in a very scrappy second half

Mark Marshall has one of the worst shots from outside the area I've seen - skewered at least four high and wide today

I've been saying it for 3 years but top boi ferry has got to work harder on his finishing

Mightily pissed off for Danny Senda if his leg is broken.

I didn't see how he got injured, but when he stayed down, keeping his lower body motionless while gesturing to the bench that it was serious, I really felt for him.

As much as I'm pissed off with some of our fans' treatment of Magera tonight, Senda was universally clapped by us as he was wheeled towards the ambulance.

One of those rare, touching moments in football when rivallry is put completely to one side, if only for a few fleeting moments.

Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, 07:12:32
The main thing is that we came through the game unscathed and we start the second leg level, not having to claw back any kind of deficit - that would have been very hard. The performance was largely irrelevant really. I think to have got a hard fought draw away from home such a short time after the Wigan game is commendable. Now the players can get their heads down and focus on the league for a couple of games.

Oh yes, some of our fans clearly need a good fucking hiding. Nothing new there though. If Di Canio is aware of the treatment Magera has been getting I would be interested to hear what he has to say about it.

Not the best game of football, but to be expected really. After the high of saturday and with a few changes we struggled to get in any sort of rhythm with our passing, although a lot of that was down to Barnet.

Can't complain though, no deficit to recover in the 2nd leg and we should be confident of beating them at home.

Expect to see Connell and De Vita back in the lineup on Saturday which should help. Shame McCormack's out though, hopefully Devera can step in like he did earlier in the season when Flint was injured.

Hope Senda's injury isn't career threatening, we seem to be an unfortunate bogey team for him.

Thought your support was very impressive, however that was alway going to be the case, good numbers and noise!! Our Stewards / police always leave it until the last minute to open the uncovered terrace behind the goal, remember the same happened the last time you were here with similar numbers!

Thought the result was about right.

Respectful applause as well for Senda, thought he was having a decent game, and hope he will be back next season for us!

Nice to see our tactic to wheeling him out when we had an attacking free kick worked to distract your defenders for our goal.

Good luck in the FA Cup chaps, and will be up at your place for the second leg, any boozers to avoid  / frequent would be welcome.

Cheers

For a player who did us such a big favour (as one of the Wycombe scorers when they beat Bristol Rovers to keep us up back in 2000/1) he's had sod all luck against us since. Wish him well.

Its not a negative but more an observation - he put a few in to touch on Saturday. I wonder if his brief was to wang it out wide, but there is a small margin of error of course.

This was me. It wasn't a criticism, merely an observation. He kicked three out of touch in a row, it had to be mentioned!

Give it a rest for fucks sake. The hardman "say it face to face and you'll get knocked sparko" reaction to every bloody issue is fucking tedious.

And yes I'd say it your face x

My post was about our fans not having the bottle to slate Magera in front of PDC, but being quite happy to tear him a new one from the terraces.

Try fucking reading what was said.

Originally the terrace behind the goal wasnt open. Then the queue started to back up, and people just barged past the stewards out of the way to go on to it. FFS they would have opened it eventually, it looked fucking embarassing when they started singing we'll do what we want..

Oh and the pub was shit. Only 2 people behind the bar?!

Anyhow, onto the game.
I was surpised Benson wasnt on the bench, thiught this wouldve been the opportunity for some valuable game time.
I thought we were pretty poor in all honesty. Flint and cibocchi had good games imo. The final ball was lacking, or there was no one on the end of it. Agree with deltaincline about the treatment of magera, it was a fucking joke. Whats the point of singing 'if magera scores were on the pitch?

Oh and there number 8 was a cunt.

Onto the second leg.

I listened on the radio last night and it all sounded a bit lacklustre, but lots of people had predicted a draw and in truth that should be good enough. Now it is like having a home tie in a knockout match.

My oldest boy will have a lasting reminder of the match. When Flint scored he went charging across the lounge celebrating loudly. He was screaming "Fliiiiint" as he went to hug a sleeping dog, who, shocked out of its slumbers lashed out and left a big cut over his forehead and one eye. The lad has gone to school today looking like a pirate.

I predicted an 'after the lord mayor's show' performance and that's what we got. After so many games over Christmas and their heroics on Saturday, I guess we can forgive them for being a little lethargic! I think we really missed Connell and Benson up front. Murray tries but he can't hold the ball up and is a little lightweight. Magera was Magera - doing everything in slow motion and not winning (many) headers, despite his height. I thought Flint and McCormack had decent games, as did Caddis and Chibocci, but nobody was outstanding.

Brilliant support again - It looked like there were more than 1400 there.

Not really worth the hassle of getting through the M25 roadworks. Bring on the second leg.

The Stewards were clueless, anyone could see there was to many Town fans for the North terrace and plenty more were still queuing to get in. Why leave it until the teams were out on the pitch before opening the section behind the goal? The female steward who was holding our supporters back was knocked to the floor but it didn't stop the chavs from trampling over her ! As a little prelude to Saturdays game I have been having a little read on the Rotherham Utd Forum and they really dont seem to like Paolo at all, its like readin a Pox forum.

Quote
Swindon next week...
I don't know about anybody else but I will just be glad when the Di Clownio circus has been and left town.
For some strange reason I don't really care about the result...I would like to stuff them though !
The more I see of the man on tv the more I just don't like him.

The usual media hype that follows him will be there, I'm sure. Our game at their place should spur us on to revenge. I just hope we have a strong referee who doesn't fall for their blatant diving.

Have they officially changed their name to 'Paolo DiCanio's Swindon' yet,
cos they might as well to listen to the media, every time they're mentioned.

Big game and i will love it when we smash that MASSIVE arrogant Italian ego...

Personally I'm looking forward to giving this ex piggy Barsteward some stick..bring him on!

Anyone see the picture in the paper of him crying after they beat Wigan?
You'd have thought they'd just beat Barca.
I hope we stuff them, their antics in previous game were poor, you could clearly hear every Swindon player scream when they had been tackled by a Rotherham player.

As for that r swipe Di Canio, hope Tongy tries to drop him again but succeeds this time.

Scotty should have our boys rolling about in agony whenever we get tackled, screaming like little babies when they are touched etc but I guess it wont happen as AS isnt that good at this thing called tactics. But you never know he just might decide to play them at their own game? what do you think?

A great opportunity for us to use Swindon as a play off promotion launch pad - we represent a banana skin for them.
What is it ? Only 1 defeat in 18 ?
They will come to Dull Valley off the back of a high octane atmospheric victory against Wigan in the FA Cup. I think Dull Valley will be a real culture shock for Di Canio and his team.
Di Canio will have no crowd behind him and will find it strange being situated so far from the crowd. The bleakness of the place and a Sunday morning atmosphere might just for once help us - Di Canio thrives off being the centre of attention which in turn inspires him to drive his players on -

And one last quite complimentary one about one of their fans who went to the game last night.
Quote
A quick low down on Swindon after I watched them last night
This will be no Zippy s trips so I apologise now!

A friend of mine is a Swindon fan and we both work in London. So last night I went with him to Underhill to watch the southern final 1st leg of the tin pot trophy against Barnet.

The ground as most of you will know is a proper throw back in time. Standing on the terrace was a real treat. Swindon took almost 1500 fans so fair play to them. They created a great atmosphere.

(Just for Zip) I felt obliged to taste a pie. Thankfully they were Pukkas only Chicken and Mushroom left but it was still good. £2.20 I think? Bovril £1.50?

Anyway back to the game. Swindon were good. As the league positions show way better than Barnet. I was surprised at the final score of 1-1

A few key players to look out for. First the keeper Foderingham was not that impressive. Kicking was poor at times, he could have done better with the goal and he spent most of the night doing not that much at all. When he did get involved it always involved a lot of shouting/fighting with his back four.

They have a giant centre half in Aden Flint. He must be close to 6'6. No point in us banging balls up front on Saturday he will just gobble them all up.

No 27 Cibocchi is an Italian right back. A very decent player. Cheats like most of his countrymen in that sly 'what me boss' kind of way. He should have been yellow carded twice before he got one.

All in all the defence looked pretty strong. The left back was always bombing forward too.

In the middle they have Simon Ferry a Scott. He was decent apart from his 1988 Gascoigne haircut! Gabilondo is a very tricky winger. Ran rings around people at times.

Up front they have a proper giant in Magera. He must be close to 6'6' as well and is a Czech International! He can flick balls on and win headers but not too many. He has the same problem as Peter Crouch. When he jumps he only gets 2 inches of the ground. Still 6'8' of height beats most players.

All in all they didn’t get run ragged. I was hoping Barnet would make them work so after two cup ties they would be knackered but that didn’t look the case.

I think it will be a hard match to win for us. They looked really classy at times.

For a tenner it worth the visit.

My highlights of the trip to Barnet were as follows...

A cracking crisp pint in a pub at the top of the hill in Barnet followed by a succulent House Special Chow Mein.
Viewing the Underhill slope for the first time and the beautiful little ground.
Paul Caddis winding up the Barnet fans.
Flint's banging header to make it 1-0.
A surprisingly good performance from Ciobocchi.
Making it back onto the M25 3 minutes before the junction was due to be closed.  Happy days.

Roll on Rotherham!

Ha ha ill informed about PDC, if they think he shed a tear about winning a football game! As for the diving, we aren't any worse than anyone else, and we never get given penalties any more so they shouldn't be worried about that.

We've played at Barnet and at Kingston-upon-Wimbledon. Good clubs and proper stadiums, but neither exactly the San Siro. I think we'll cope.

No doubt it will be a tough game though. Especially after such a busy period. And looking at February the schedule doesn't exactly calm down much. You can see why PDC wants a couple of quality players added to the squad.

I do wonder if that comment is part of the reason that we don't seem to get even the most blatant penalties.

However he said that after Macclesfield where we were denied an obvious penalty because Ritchie didn't fall over when fouled. So it probably hasn't made that much difference, we didn't get them before & we still aren't getting them.

Hopefully the ref will prove me wrong on Saturday & give us three. That will give the Northern Monkeys something to moan about. :)

They just gave up in the end and let anyone through

The people waiting at the front were being pushed in to them by the people behind so they didn't have much of a choice. I was in the ground fairly early and could see a massive queue outside and there was nowhere to stand in the side terrace, said to the woman steward "May as well just let us through now surely? There's hundreds outside still and it's pretty much full already" The response was the same old frustrating "Head Safety Officer hasn't given us the go ahead" which seemed to be some mythical creature who wasn't actually around to be seen.

This was repeated from other stewards as people got pissed off and started having a go at them telling them to open up minutes before kick off, it's also the same thing that stewards were coming out with at Plymouth when being abused for not moving the segregated netting over a couple of rows.

The question I would pose to the head safety officers of Plymouth and Barnet is what exactly are you doing when fans start having a pop at your stewards because you're clearly too busy to actually be watching the safety of the ground to make key decisions?

Are you aware thet people that you employ are on the front line, trying to do a job for you and are getting called cunts and pricks by aggrivated football fans because you're sat in an office with your finger up your arse not making pretty easy common sense decisions?

I was stood on the side terrace watching the stewards making an arse of themselves, they had locked the far gate between us and Barnet 15 minutes before they decided to let our fans through. The Town fans at the front seemed to be waiting patiently and it was the late comers at the back who were pushing forward. The female steward who was knocked to the floor stayed down for ages but the other stewards were more concerned about grabbing town fans which wasn't helping in the slightest. I think trying to keep our fans from behind the goal was more to do with advantage than anything else but because of our numbers in the end they had no choice.

Barnet fan in peace.

Firsty 1400 travelling fans, thats the level of support we can only dream of, and it certainly helped to create a good atmosphere. We know we have a shocking stadium (believe me, we have been trying to move ground for 15 years, however have had no luck with the council) i happen to like underhill, perhaps im biased but i prefer it to these new identical souless stadium!! and am dreading the day we actually do move. The stewards are also clueless, however no excuse to push over a female steward, again i should imagine Barnet didn't expect 1400 to travel.

Im not sure what happened in the pub (the red lion), the pub usually caters for away fans and gets rave reviews, i can only imagine they severly underestimated the level of support from Swindon, however there were plenty of your fans in the queens arms.

The game itself was awful at times, devoid of any real quailty, and i am fully expecting a tougher game at the county ground, i should imagine we will bring 500ish (which is good for us!!) however i believe we have a real chance and i look forward to another good atmopshere (and hopefully some better football aswell!) atleast it's not £25 this time, daylight robbery springs to mind  :D

see you all on the 7th oh and i'm suprised that Joey Devera isn't in your starting 11, he is class!

what game was that rotherham fan watching yesterday? certainly wasn't the one at underhill where neither team could string two passes together in the second half

I happen to like underhill, perhaps im biased but i prefer it to these new identical souless stadium!! and am dreading the day we actually do move.

I think most genuine football fans feel the same. I actually didn't think it was that bad, was expecting worse after what I had heard. Definitely beats Wimbledon anyway.

Are you aware thet people that you employ are on the front line, trying to do a job for you and are getting called cunts and pricks by aggrivated football fans because you're sat in an office with your finger up your arse not making pretty easy common sense decisions?

i was quite near the flashpoint but made sure i had my hands in my pockets but the pushing started from behind and suddenly it all spilled forward.

Given that we sold 1200 in advance, it should hardly have come as a shock

Im not sure what happened in the pub (the red lion), the pub usually caters for away fans and gets rave reviews, i can only imagine they severly underestimated the level of support from Swindon, however there were plenty of your fans in the queens arms.

As above. Easy enough to find out ahead of time.

Let's hope it's a better game! I won't be able to make it because of work, but will hopefully catch the 2nd half on TV. No idea what the crowd will be for this one but given the low prices I'd hope for a five-figure gate. If we can answer Paolo's call to fill the ground then great!

see you all on the 7th oh and i'm suprised that Joey Devera isn't in your starting 11, he is class!

Comfortably our 3rd best centre back.

. No idea what the crowd will be for this one

Head says normal league gate - I know Wembley is the prize, but for some the JPT will never be an attraction...unless we do get to Wembley obviously.

Then again 1400 fans to Barnet on a Tuesday suggests I am wrong.

Barnet fan, I like Underhill. Its a pretty tidy ground now you have the permanent seated stand behind the goal. I think the real problem away fans have with it is that it doesnt appeal to their ego's. Modern fans also struggle with the old school terrace fence, fans either side. They are not used to having to fight to get themselves heard. For some reason it was a big problem for us in the FAC game 4 years ago. We were 1 nil up and cruising, but your fans were bang up for it that night, and it turned to momentum of the game. Only problem with the ground is the uncovered end, only tinpot clubs have them nowadays, ahem.

I liked the ground, it's the pitch I have an issue with.

The only things I didn't like about the ground are the two poxy temporary stands that have been built on terraces.

They remind me of the identikit stands that were at the manor shed up the A420, and also the away end at the Pikey's, which is equally shit

But other than those two, I thought it was a tidy little ground.

In reality, I think Barnet are probably better off there, than having a shiny new ground which is 3/4 empty every week.

I know he's not our player but I felt very sorry for the guy. Thought I'd put this link on re: Senda - here's a bit about his injuries

Hope he recovers and plays again...

think I'm right in saying the slope at Barnet from end to end is between 10ft to 12ft that makes it something like a slope of 1 in 20. I guess we had the choice of ends on Tuesdays ko as i can't imagine Barnet would want to play up the slope and the opposite end from their own fans in the 2nd half. Perhaps one of our friends from Barnet know this ?

Gutted for him, I was right behind and could see it was bad. I really do hope he recovers and plays again.

Agreed, especially as its happened to him before.

I can't imagine he will want to play against us again mind.

Just hope his injury is not as complicated as last time, dislocations nearly always turn out worse than  straight breaks and age isn't on his side football wise. Fingers crossed for him.

Chesterfield 2  Oldham 1. Looking at stats Oldham were unlucky and will still fancy their chances in the second leg.

If we get there. neither holds any fears. Think I'd rather play oldham as we know what they will be like, Chesterfield are more of an unkown. Cue 2-0 Barnet win to make my comments irrelevant.

Not sure who I'd prefer to face, I think Oldham will beat Chesterfield in the 2nd leg but as you say Sutton neither holds any fear! I am more fearful of cocking up against Barnet at home, although I maintain we'll be too strong for them and get through!

pretty poor crowd of 5,724 last night at Chesterfield, you would have thought the prospect of Wembley would be more appealling.

And yes as Notts says the stats were heavily against Chesterfield last night.

Chesterfield had 7 shots on target, 6 shots off target, 8 corners and conceded 17 free kicks.
Oldham had 12 shots on target, 10 shots off target, 10 corners and only 5 free kicks.
