Title: Northampton Vs Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Saturday, December 31, 2011, 00:49:31
So i'm sober,
but i'm gonna start this anyways.

if we don't win I promise I won't start another thread until i'm properly smashed coming home from the SU on a friday night.

However I'm going to the game so have a good feeling.

2-0 Town.

When did we all become so superstitious about matchday threads?!

2-1 win.

Need to get the three points after Friday's results (Cheltenham and Crawley both won, if you missed it. Gills lost though!)

Fooooootballlll. We'll probably lose, they have akinfenwa and he is massive. They'll play long ball (because of boothroyd), and aim those long balls toward mcormack. Be difficult

I forgot that Northampton got dicked 2-7 by Shrewsbury, a score like that would be great.

Not for the 1st time this season it is a very big day today. We need to go again on a long unbeaten run. Lose and we could drop to 9th. A win will take us to 6th, possibly 5th which will be perfect for an assault on the title in 2012 with 13 home games and only 10 away as opposed to Crawley who have 10 at home and 13 away.
Early kick offs today will play a part. A point for Plymouth @ Aldershot in an early kick off will put Northampton rock bottom @ 3:00pm and surely add pressure. Likewise Burton, Oxford & Port Vale are all away in 1:00pm kick offs. Finally both Southend & Shrewsbury are away today and as a consequence today is the day to get an away win!

I do feel that we are going to tank someone away from home but fear that the day is not today. Therefore 1-1, although as ever the 1st goal is crucial.

We're notoriously bad at keeping out the long ball, but I am backing Flinty and Fodders (bouyed by a nailed on no. 1 spot come January) to keep us in this. First goal wins this tie, 1-0 town with an Esajas long range contract saver in the 84th.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE UPDATE: In League Two, Crewe thumped Bristol Rovers 5-2 with Nick Powell bagging a double for the Railwaymen. Southend easily overcame AFC Wimbledon 4-1 and Bradford beat Shrewsbury 3-1. It was goalless between Torquay and Oxford United while Northampton stay bottom of the table after managing only a 2-2 draw against Burton Albion.

I thought he said something about 'Claudio' training with the team but he must have just meant Paul Benson  ::)

Claudio is the fitness coach - if that makes what he said make any more sense.

Any win....and the same on Monday, points over performance for me.

Up The Town.

Brilliant....not interested in the politics of the team etc....wins and out of this mare of a league....Dags beating Gills,Rovers being stuffed by Crewe and Bradford tonking Shrews show that in this league nothing is easy.

Any win v Wimbledon and i cannot wait for the match v Wigan this time next week.
Well done to all who went today...i will be going to a few more away matches now the season is heading for a conclusion.

Now back up to 5th, and now only 4 points off 3rd, and now we're into the second half of the season when we've got 13 home matches and only 10 away.

Just a few things...

Magera shit. Connel Awesome.
Ferry changed the game, we were more attacking when he came on.
Risser's just a little bit gay, but we played more agressively, and more decisevely when he got sent off.
The referee (who's a prem ref) was shit.
De Vita made the second goal, with a stunning bit of control from an inch perfect pass by flint (Who reminded me a little bit of Ifil).
Murray should've put us 2 up in 10 mins.

Risser, Kennedy's distribution,Magera - Pants
Ferry, Connel, McCormack & De Vita- winners.

Oh, and those three middle aged fuck-wits giving gob to Ritchie after they went 1-0 - guess they don't want him to stay. Watched them at the end calling Ritchie over, he took a few steps then showed them the fingers, great to see.

Just got back. What a game!
The ten players really stepped up to the mark, Risser was not missed and  I would have taken Risser off for Ferry and not J.Smith.
Connell livened the game up when he came on at half-time, deserves to start on Monday.
Murray was unlucky 2 chances skimmed the outside of the post.
all in all a good day out and 3 points in the bag

McCormack was fucking outstanding today, ran his heart for the team. Really good to see players showing passion and pride in the Town shirt. Ferry and Connell were brilliant too, certainly Ferry changed the game, when will he learn Risser is not a starter? He tries hard and I don't doubt his enthusiasm but it's all a lot of huff and puff for nothing. Also, it was good to see Devera put in a decent shift, he played well but was lacking a little fitness which is why I believe Flint came on.

Just back. Not a good first half, the penalty was a definite, a miss timed tackle by Ritchie who immediately had his head in his hands.

Second half much brighter and what a way to win. Alan McC was excellent and that put the cherry on top.

All in all a bit unlucky for Northampton, but I don't care :)

Dissapointments, well Risser is too off the pace for division 4 football. Magera is technically good but is still struggling, Connell looked twice the threat. But meh. Time for New Years beer :)

Just got home, so here are my thoughts

We only had 10 men, and they had 12.

Ref was a definite homer, and so nice to wipe the smiles of their fucking faces at the end.

It's funny how you see games differently, because too many people have decided that Magera is shit it doesn't matter what he does now people only remember the bad stuff, which to be fair there is plenty of.  But he also does plenty of good stuff, but those that have made their mind up about him conveniently miss or ignore his good bits.

Ferry & Connell did well when they came on, don't know how much of that is down to the bollocking the rest of them will have got at half time.

Devera did well to be fair, I'm assuming that he went off as he was tired (hasn't played much).
Flint didn't make us any better or worse when he came on, which is a big compliment to Devera.

Risser I'm assuming was playing to try & win headers in midfield, hence why Smith went off for Ferry.

Ref was a total fucking homer, listened to Radio Northampton, and they were happy with him, which tells you all you need to know.

To be honest we were OK in the first half, just seemed to be off the pace a bit.

Absolutely fucking immense to nick a winner at the end, and no less than McCormack deserved.
He (like the rest of us) didn't get much help from the Ref.

Not sure if Risser deserved a red to be honest. It was a foul as he jumped into their player, but it didn't seem that his arms were raised particularly. He then got shoved over by one of theirs.
Listening to the commentary on Radio Northampton on the way back, their commentators thought their guy was going to be sent off as well, but the ref (surprise surprise) only gave their man a yellow card.

All in all a bit happy tonight, and will now go & have a few to celebrate.

Super Alan Mac. It was funny how earlier in the match one of my friends actually said "How good would an Alan Mac winner be?". Well that's that answered. He is brilliant.

Thought Risser did his job well today, unfortunate judgement on his part for the sending off. Ref was a homer. Murray unlucky with his chances. Devera did really well too. Northampton were very quick to close down, particularly on the flanks, which made it difficult for us to play our game. Brilliant goal from Connell too. Fantastic.

To be fair, their team just dropped in to 92nd place this afternoon and the penny's dropped they could be playing Ebbsfleet next season.  I think I'd be fairly chopsy in their position as well.

Completely missed PDC's celebrations because I was too busy going mental in the stand at the side.  I'll look forward to seeing the coverage though.  Listening to BBC Radio Northampton after the game (during the 30 mins it took to leave the car park) he did apologise to Boothroyd right away...and the apology was gracefully accepted.

Thats why we go to football, brilliant end to a poor game. First half the wind didn't help, and we were struggling with the constant long balls, I dont think northampton put more than 2 passes together before hoofing all game, dreadful to watch, I dont think i've ever seen a game with so many throw ins. Risser's dismissal looked like a great header to me. Unfortunately the ball had gone a second before, that defender will have a headache tonight. As for the winner unblieveable run and finish by Mac, and then to see PDC bombing across the pitch was hilarious, although I can understand how Northampton wouldn't be happy with it, although like us they probably wont ever forget it :) Oh and get Fods signature down before we get gazumped, one of those saves when we were 1 down was incredible.

I was sat in the main stand with the Northampton fans today as the little'un was mascot for the day. I must congratulate Northampton on being be very courteous and being an excellent host. Onto the game, first half we had a couple of good half chances from Murray but that aside they were on top and but for Wes could have been more then 1 up. Defiantly no complaints about the penalty from what I could see. Second half we showed the intensity we missed in the first half and Connell looked to have something about him. The Ferry substitution changed the game for me. Great finish by Connell and then to smash it in the last minute was awesome.

It was funny to hear the Northampton fans trying to winde PDC up, but it become very tiresome with the mock Italian accents and pasta jokes.

My only complaint was that at least 3 occasions we let the ball bounce at the back for Wes to claim it, and from what I can see he never called any of them. A better team would have taken advantage of those opportunities.

Yes it would, you're absolutely right.

Although in fairness, even Paolo acknowledged in his post match interview that he'd gone a bit OTT. As a Town fan though you've got to love it. By the same token, if Northampton had got an injury time winner (shudders at the thought), I suspect that Boothroyd's reaction would have not been dissimilar and Cobblers fans would have loved it and basked in it just as we are now.

My understanding is that Paolo apologized to AB and AB accepted the apology. So it's all good.

In the long run, Paolo will calm down (and has to). For now though, I'm loving it 8)

You have to love it. That is pure, natural, un-rehearsed, spontaneous passion. I am absolutely certain that there are fans of probably 20 or 30 clubs in the 4 divisions (if not more) who are desparate for their manager to show anything like that emotion and passion.

I'm wondering whether him and Benson should be our preferred front 2. After all, Connell scored all those goals with Peacs as his partner and when you watched that Grimsby goals of the season vid, if they weren't stunners they were set up by The Peaconator. Benson could be made for Connell.

(I am of course basing this on nothing more than guesswork and the fact he's 6'2". For all I know Benson might like to play in the hole.)

Thought i'd do a ratings as someone asked a couple of weeks back, and as i can just see the keyboard.

Sir Wes. 8  couple of cracking saves, top goalie, hope someone else doesnt pinch him.

Caddis 6, steady but pinned back by their long balls. He also needs to cut out the card waving to the refs.

Devera 7. Didnt look like he hadn't played for 2 months.

Macormack. 9. Was superb all game, but to finish with a lung buster last minute winner was the icing. Was unsure when he signed, but probably our pots so far.

Kennedy. 6. As per caddis pinned back most of the time, to negate their hoofs.

Ritchie. 6. Shocker of a tackle for the pen, but did pretty well going forward with out looking ultra dangerous.

J smith 5. Didnt do much wrong, but didn;t shine for me.

Risser 4 I dont really know how to mark him, as Smith was better, but the headbutt was probably worthy of another 3 marks to 7 :)

De Vita 7. thought he looked skillful and focused, caused their rb problems all game.

Magera. 5. looked ok for link play, but took a bad clatter before half time so was substituted.

I obviously am pissed as I've forgotten the Ipswich lads name, probably should have scored at least one, but looked dangerous particularly 1st half 6.

Connell. 8 cracking finish and caused them problems all 2nd half.

Ferry 7. def improved us, should have scored a header shortly after coming on.

Flint 7. Bought on and negated akinfenwa, and had a couple of decent runs forward.

PDC 10. The loveable loony, if he gets a 5 game ban it would be worth it for me, to see that.

Support Numbers 10. Noise 5. Seem to struggle somewhat with the more we have at a game,  seems hard to get songs going.

You have to love it. That is pure, natural, un-rehearsed, spontaneous passion. I am absolutely certain that there are fans of probably 20 or 30 clubs in the 4 divisions (if not more) who are desparate for their manager to show anything like that emotion and passion.

You cunt......

You made my blood run cold!

Just imagine for a few brief seconds that.......our manager......was still........................

I totally missed PDC running on the pitch and only found out about it when they were talking about it on bbc northampton.
Thats how mental we were going in the side stand.

I personally didn't think Magera or Risser had too bad a game today. (until Risser decided to hug the N'hampton player in mid air with his elbows obviously.)

Oh, Happy new year all, I'm pretty drunk now, can I start the wombles thread without consequences?

Oh and when I saw that Paul Hart picture I actually shuddered.
can you even imagine?!

Great reaction from PDC !
Great result today and second half we pressed well for the winner. All in all a great day out !
Here's my own fans-eye-view of the winning goal as it happened !  Sorry about quality but hopefully the atmosphere is clear !!

Well said! My voice is fucked.

You weren't the only one who missed it. Nice of BBC Northants to interview PDC "because, well, he's PDC". For those who missed it, he apologised to the Northampton fans and said it ewas just pure joy. I think it great myself, besides which in the wind up stakes - no different really from their player running behind the goal in front of our fans after they scored the pen.

Oh, as surprisingly coherent post from Sutton given the time!

Starting with the good bits. Foderingham, outstanding again. Great saves, brave, kept us in it at crucial times. What a fantastic keeper this lad could be. Connell, when put through on goal he made 100% sure that ball was going in the net, he didnt leave it to chance like the lad Murray early in the game. Alan McCormack, the timing of his run was outstanding and it left Northampton in absolute dissaray. They could not cope with it at all. It reminded me of what Lothar Matthaus used to do for the Germans in big games, which was why they were always so hard to beat. Real big bollocks.

The bad - First half was a fairly dire standard. Typical crap game against a Hoofroyd team. Some of the players who are supposed to be comming in as rotation squad players are clearly not up to it. Magera is very hard to watch, he labours around the field making very little impact. Risser's positioning is dodgy, he runs towards balls when there already 2 other Town players there to receive it, you have to doubt his 'football brain'. Murray, his touch lets him down at the crucial stages, and we cannot afford to miss 1 on 1 chances. Players should practice it, it should be 9/10 back of the net. Connell showed great composure and made sure the job was done. J Smith was OK, but he made far too many fouls yesterday, PDC was right to sub him because the ref would have sent him off before 90 minutes.

Ref was giving things on the basis of players appealing, he was very easily influenced, which made things more difficult for us as the side chasing the game for most of the time. Our fans were pretty crap, not much noise or support. You would have thought it was a New Years Day fixture.

Di Canio is brilliant. He is instilling his 'live in the moment' mentality and we are becomming winners because of that. Long may it continue. But we need our strongest 11 on the pitch. I feel like we are still experimenting, hoping certain players will come good. Its too late for that now, the best available team must be on the pitch every week.

Just seen a couple if tweets from our scouts saying that the formation was a 4231. If so, how did it look? I take it that Risser was the anchor and Muarry the attacking midfielder behind Magera?

I thought it was a mess to be honest. Northampton were the better team in the first half, and that really shouldnt be happening. I hope we dont put anything like that on the park against Wigan or they could embaress us.

Thought today may be a decent time to do my first post.

Yesterday I brought a couple of family members with me, both being Rushden & Diamonds/AFC Rushden fans, they were well up for a Swindon win, I've never seen a 'non Swindon fan' sing so much. Was great to see, singing 'down with the Oxford' and 'that's why you're going down' etc was sheer elation. The team spirit shone through, not only with the character of turning the game on it's head, and getting a 93rd minute winner from an unlikely source (McCormack) BUT the celebration too!! Northampton & O****d fans are all kicking off about it...but I'm pretty sure if it was their manager it'd have been fine.

I've not felt like this about an away day since Charlie Austin rounded the keeper at Southampton in the playoff season.

Happy new year all.

Yesterday the fitness levels could be seen.

Even with 10 men we were still playing for a win and our legs still looked fresh.

Connell's goal a great finish and Macca's (where did he come from ?) again a neat finish past the advancing keeper.
Macca to me was MOM.

..........and then the goal celebration that keeps on making me smile. Never have I ever seen anything like that.

Thought Di Canio spoke well on the Northants Radio and my Cobblers Mates were gutted to lose in the way they did but complimented Swindon on the attitude and fitness.

As for other Cobblers and Pox fans having a go that is football and having a Manager like Paolo. If he is yours you love him and if he is against you then you loathe him. Imagine Steve Evans doing that at the CG in the last minutes then you have the answer.
Great way to start of the New Years Eve celebrations.

One of the most euphoric experiences ever as a Swindon fan when McCormack put that winner away and a well deserved win even if our performance wasn't up to par yesterday. The comeback in the second half was excellent and highlights the strong mentality that Di Canio has instilled in the team - so many Town sides in recent years would have capitulated after Northampton's goal and with all decisions seemingly going against us. Really proud to be a Town fan, proud of the team and proud of the manager.

The changes prior to kick-off were surprising but if Gary Rose's suggestions that Ferry and Flint were those who had been ill during the week then understandable. I was impressed with Devera who slotted in well and showed a lot of composure so very comforting to see that if we lose Flint or McCormack through suspension/injury we've got someone capable of stepping up. Although Risser didn't have a poor game he offers us so little in comparison to Ferry and Smith probably had his worst game of the season yesterday, much of which can be attributed to the fact that he's built up such an excellent understanding with Ferry.

The referee was simply atrocious - no consistency in his decisions, very easily swayed by the crowd and the players and allowed Northampton to get away with so much time wasting. The penalty was absolutely nailed on but I didn't see the the incident very well so won't comment.

First half performance was very poor and we allowed Northampton to dictate how we played, we couldn't keep the ball in midfield as we desperately missed Ferry but Foderingham made a series of excellent saves that kept us in the game. It could be argued that Murray was profligate in front of goal but it's heartening to see him get into these positions, his movement reminds me of Parkin and Cox.

I presume the half-time substitution of Magera was forced due to injury but it allowed Connell to prove his worth with an excellent finish, as others have said I am confident that he will score goals given a run in the team but I imagine Benson will be ahead of him in the pecking order. Our performance in the second half was quite dominant at times but we also allowed Northampton back into the game too often - a lack of discipline putting us under pressure. However you'd never have known we only had 10 men the way we played after Risser's dismissal.

Northampton are nowhere near as bad as their league position suggests, definitely not the worst team I've seen this season.

Foderingham - 8/10 - never looked like conceding aside from the penalty and kept his calm despite getting sparked out
Caddis - 7/10 - reliable and energetic as ever but he really needs to learn to stop arguing with the referee as he will just pick up needless bookings
McCormack - 9/10 - solid at the back and made some excellent challenges, a number of lung-busting runs with the ball that left Northampton bewildered and a great finish for the goal - when can we call him a bonafide centre back?
Devera - 7/10 - calm and composed and reassuring that we've got cover for that spot
Kennedy - 6/10 - average delivery and wasted a number of crosses
Ritchie - 7/10 - poor tackle for the penalty but recovered well
Risser - 6/10 - selected to break up the play, win headers from Boothroyd's long ball tactics and keep it simple and he just about managed that
Smith - 6/10 - fairly anonymous and not helped by much of the play bypassing our central midfield prior to his substitution
De Vita - 8/10 - best I've seen from him so far, great ball to McCormack for the winner
Magera - 6/10 - showed a little more than he has in recent games but made little impact
Murray - 7/10 - perhaps should have scored one of the chances he had and looked absolutely knackered at full time

Connell - 7/10 - great control and finish for the goal
Ferry - 7/10 - allowed us to keep possession and play a bit more, used the ball well which is something we lacked with Risser and Smith together
Flint - 7/10 - same as it ever was from Flint

Fantastic numbers yesterday but atmosphere was quite flat. Possibly because of the allocated seating? There was only about half a dozen people around me joining in songs.

Foderingham is the key to our automatic promotion chances. The board need to just throw money at Palace and Wes to keep him, bollocks to the budget!

I haven't had a look back so i will just give my comments first.

had a good run up from Calne stopping enrolee to pick up the Southmoors massive on the way.

Nice cheeky pint in the TGI and served by Michael Buble...sweet.

Bit bemused by the lack of flint in the line up but did a little dance when i discovered that Jervis was missing. End of loan?...i fucking hope so!

The Pies were just like our first half performance....shite.

I thought that we were pretty piss poor in the first half but did have a couple of chances to notch and missed them...we do need a finisher and i wonder if Benson realises the weight on his shoulders?

Fodders is huge and i have never been so confident in a keeper since Digby joined us.

the black lad up front for them was a real thorn in our side and impressed me (not afinfatwat).

It was an obvious pen that you could see from space and i was a bit miffed that the crowd blamed the ref...it was as stonewall as you will ever see.

the second half was eventful to say the least....connell proved an instant hit as the cobblers had a taste of their own medicine, he badgered and chased them and his goal was superb. i like this lad and i hope he keeps working hard and gets a few more goals for us, however, he didn't have to play that well to improve on Mageras shift, i have made up my mind now...he's not up to scratch.

We got more into the game but i must admit i thought it was going to be torquuay all over again as they broke up play put the boot in just as a typical adie boothroyd side does (we all remember our match at colchester in the play off season!?).

conn ells goal came at an important time and i thought if we got one we could get another but when Risser was red carded (again thank fuck he's missing for a few games) i would of settled for a point.

mccormicks goal was roy of the rovers stuff and i went fucking mental....!!  This match is up there for away days for me , although fucking Crawley over was sweet!

PDC shouldn't have run on the pitch like that and will probably end up with a deserved ban, If Wilder or Evans did that at our place it would be fucking chaos!  BUT ...you just got to love the cunt......Did we really have Paul Hart in charge of us last season or am i dreaming!?

roll on tomorrow!!

You redz!!!

Great win and great way to win it !
Alan Mac MOM
Ironic that after the game walking back to bruvs house to hear on several occasions Northampton fans praising Swindons play, fitness and attitude. Plus begrudgingly praising PDC's and Town fans passion. Yet the only slating on the day came from (thankfully a very few) complete muppets amongst our own. Good reaction though from Town fans though and hopefully if Ritchie does venture to read this forum will see he has the backing of most of Swindons support.

Having watched highlights on the OS (which shows Super Alan Mac's full run & goal) Caddis was at fault twice for Berahino chances - the header (Wes' one-hander), where he was appealing for offside and not defending, and the 1-on-1. Fortunate that those chances were squandered.

Fuck me some of them are a little bit bitter about yesterdays game , taken from their forum

"http://thetownend.com/index.php/topic,46238.285.html Look at pages 20 and 21....for a side that just beat the bottom club their claims of "going mental" after the winner are hilarious.

A loud cheer and a bit of scarf waving..... whooppeeeee doo la.

Also tossing themselves off because they bought 1300 up the road to Sixfields saying "which other club has a following like that in this crap division?"
Errrrrr.....didn't we take 1000 to Poxford (and we're not at the top!)
How many did we take to Wimbledon on the Tuesday night?

And as for the Bitter Inbred dimones fans......

Northampton & O****d fans are all kicking off about it...but I'm pretty sure if it was their manager it'd have been fine."

If that was a loud cheer and scarf waving then I must have been in a parallel universe yesterday

Ha, what a knob.  Always makes me laugh when knobheads go onto another teams forum and expect anything different.  He wants to come on here when we lose, though that is not likely against Northampton.

Just watched the highlights on the BBC which show the Risser incident a bit better. Think the ref got it totally wrong, Risser's challenge was no more than a yellow and their player should have got a red for slamming him to the ground. Might be worth an appeal.

When I first saw it I knew it would be red, but wasn't sure if it really deserved it. Risser didn't seem to intentionally take the man out, he just got his jump completely wrong. However, having seen the (not that helpful) video I'd say there's no way it would get overturned, even if it was an accident.

An appeal to that might get him an extra game on the sidelines for the appeal to "be deemed a waste of time"....sounds good to me!!!

Do it

Was there and in real time my first thought was straight red. He nearly took the lad's head off! That said, I totally agree about the push, their bloke intentionally raised his hands and knocked Risser completely off his feet (without the aid of theatrics too). I'd rather we didn't appeal the red card though, his sending off was a blessing disguise for me. Anything to keep him out of the team!

Don't think anybody around me thought it was ever going to be anything other than a straight red. It was fairly clear at the time there was no malice involved, but it was so late and 'spectacular' that it was always going to be.

Pretty much exactly how I saw it, you could tell he didn't mean anything but it was stupidly late....always thought it was likely to be a red

Still not convinced, doesn't look dangerous and his elbow wasn't raised. Think it was the player going down like he'd shot and the reaction of his team mates that did for him. Players are always mistiming jumps for headers.

On Risser, to me he doesn't add anything. His performance was summed up by his fresh air pass which is what I do on a Sunday afternoon kickabout with mates!

He is actually quite strong in the air though, would make a better CB maybe a la McCormack?

Think that's a bit harsh myself. They all seem friendly enough, haven't "Darlington'd" their stadium and its easy to get to. They may be limited in resources, but they are better supported than Barnet or Crawley.

I was in that "rent-a-stand" as my dad worked for the local paper in northhampton at the time, so got hold of some free tickets. From memory the view was appalling.....
