Title: Ipad or Laptop?
Post by: Nick Bamosomi on Friday, November 25, 2011, 16:24:38
Simple question, which would you choose?
I haven't really explored either that much ie what can a laptop do that an ipad can't etc.

Any information gratefully received.

iPad hands down for me. I'll leave the technical differences to those in the know though.

The usual questions, what do you intend to use it for primarily?

Completely different things to be honest - depends what you want to do I guess ?

If you want to browse web, do email and play a few games - and don't mind touchscreen for typing - then I would go for iPad

If you want a REAL computer then a laptop :)

I've also pondered this conundrum. I decided it would only be worthwhile if you had a laptop as well.

With the iPad you can't just download anything from anywhere, eg. torrents & zip files, and generally third party applications. and the disk space is pretty low compared to what you can fit on a laptop these days!

I've got both and use them in different circumstances. I think i'd find it frustrating if i only had an ipad. However, ipad+dropbox+wifi is pretty amazing and makes the storage question a little redundant

Can watch downloaded porn on an iPad

I had to stop doing that as my niece and nephew kept taking it from me, which led to some awkward questions.

Fortunately the main free porn sites all have iPad compatible video now, so I can view in the web browser.

Definitely a case of horses for courses.

Personally, I reckon about 80% of what I do on my laptop could be done on a tablet.

But there are some things we want to do that a tablet just can't do because you can't get the software. For example, the Mrs has a fancy Dan sewing machine that the software just can't be got for on a tablet.

So we have a laptop.

Besides which, I refuse to pay the premium price of an i-pad or good android tablet over that of a laptop.

I've never had a laptop, just a desktop pc.
I just want a more portable way of playing a few games - FM and time management type games rather than "action" games, accessing internet and social networking, watching films and maybe a bit of writing (word processing).

I'm not in any rush to buy either, but it is a purchase I'm seriously considering.

Be warned that you'll need a laptop with a half decent graphics card to play FM in 3d match mode.

Due to them being a sherman tank, want to know everything, scared of everything else and control freaks owned company, I'd guess you've more chance of winning the lottery than getting a redundant tablet that to be honest I just posted back to HO today for a third screen replacement in as many months. Fucking driving me mental. Seriously these tablets make the ones that Moses came down the mountain with look positively space age.

difference is in about a couple of years your laptop will be worth about £50 where as your iPad will still fetch at least 60% of it's value...

I paid £1,300 for an iMac 3 years years ago and I can still get £850 for it now.... show me a PC that retains that kind of value...

Where did you get that price from. I bought mine for £399.

On the subject of what's better I've got an Mac Laptop and an iPad. The Mac is good to store all your pictures, documents etc. but the iPad is brilliant for games, social networking and for travelling. Depends what you want to primarily use it for. Always good to have a laptop though imo. Macbooks are brilliant.

Without getting into an iMac vs PC debate as they serve completely different end user needs, but this argument doesn’t stack up.

Equivalent spec pc is going to be £400-500 less to begin with and you could upgrade the pc every 3 years for less than £450.

Would imagine the build quality in a Mac would be far better. I've had my son in law's lappie since last night blue screening, due to graphics card driver issues, sorted that issue out, but there is so much flex in the base in a certain point by the dvd writer that if you pick it up there it blue screens(the worst thing is it's a natural place to pick it up), loose connection or dry joint, no doubt. Shit build quality in these budget lappies

Basically you get what you pay for

I haven't got a clue what a similar spec laptop to my Macbook Pro would cost, mainly as I've never seen another laptop brand with the same level of quality. I guess maybe some of the Sony are in the ballpark but they aren't cheap.

Does anyone else use aluminium? It makes a real difference - light but still feels as solid as a lump of metal.

Hence the get what you pay for, I think there are a few around with an aluminium chassis but I couldn't name them off hand, would have to go back through my back issues of PC Pro.  When I knock up a pc for myself I always use a decent Lian Li case and those aren't cheap either

Missed the point completely gents.

I did see your point, basically bog standard lappies are disposable, but just thought I'd point out that you get what you pay for, in the case of the Mac, build quality. I do agree that they are over priced, but it's called design. I'm pc through and through, I just couldn't be doing with them insisting on doing upgrades and repairs themselves and charging me a fortune for doing it. Laptops to me are just for tinkering with and a bit of surfing(on my linux netbook now) any other stuff, video processing etc is done on the pc.
I wouldn't be going down Mcphleas route of buying a pc for investment purposes either  ;)

Title: Re: Ipad or Laptop?

Without getting into an iMac vs PC debate as they serve completely different end user needs, but this argument doesn’t stack up. Equivalent spec pc is going to be £400-500 less to begin with and you could upgrade the pc every 3 years for less than £450.

Think you're the one that has missed the point.

1. Buy an iMac for £1300 three years ago. Now worth £850. Total cost of ownership = £450.
2. Buy a PC for £800 three years ago. Now worth (being very generous) £350. Total cost of ownership = £450.

So the real cost is exactly the same. Of course you could upgrade the PC rather than selling it but you're left with an upgraded three year old PC, whereas the Mac owner can trade theirs in for a brand new iMac for the same outlay.

The idea that Macs are more expensive is a bit of a fallacy. Initial outlay wise they are but when you factor everything in longer term the difference is negligible. They're not always more expensive initially either, not sure if it's still the case but a year or two ago it was pretty much impossible to build a PC with an equivalent spec as a Mac Pro for the same money.

Though far more important is whether a Mac or PC is best for your needs. It's actually not perfect for my needs, which is why I run Windows 7 as a virtual machine as well - which actually performs better than all the sub £400 Windows laptops I've used through work over the last couple of years.

Title: Re: Ipad or Laptop?
Post by: Barry Scott on Sunday, November 27, 2011, 21:28:59
I know people talk about how a PC is cheaper, and it is, but you have to do so much more to justify it being cheaper. It's a false economy.

To start with you have to build it yourself, which immediately means it's not a true comparison because most people can't do that with a pc and you can't (Hakintosh excused) do that with a Mac. So, excepting that, it's then only fair to compare high-spec off the shelf, with serious build quality where the prices are very close. You also don't get the after sales care Applecare provides, Knowhow isn't even comparable.

I used to have a Vaio and the quality doesn't even come close. (It also cost more than my MBP.) I also still own a Thinkpad and that's the closest in build quality I've seen to a Macbook, but still isn't really a patch on it.

On that basis I just went to Lenovo and built an i7 Thinkpad, similar to my MBP and it was actually more expensive. Applecare for 3 years is £199 and 3 years with Lenovo, that seems comparable is £127.

http://i.imgur.com/gxXmv.png

I just couldn't be doing with them insisting on doing upgrades and repairs themselves and charging me a fortune for doing it.

Upgrading a Mac is almost the same as a PC. My last one I did the Ram and HD myself and my brand new, or near as brand new Mac, I also upgraded myself. (It doesn't void the warranty unless the upgrade you performed is deemed responsible for the fault and the parts you've changed are no longer under warranty.)
