Well Bogus Dave you're a braver man than me, if this game goes tits up there'll be a few horses wanting some new heads I suspect.

We've got to start putting some runs together if we're going to join the promotion race.  Accrington and Plymouth were both great results, but won't mean much if we can keep it going against Gillingham and Bradford.  Tough game...Gills have also taken 7 points from the last 9 available, but I'm optimistic about our chances.

Tough game. Not overly confident.

Will go with a scrappy 1-1 draw. Late goal from Ridenhalgh to salvage a point.

2-3 last minute shinner from that little bastard Kuffour. I'd like a free flowing game full of incident; however I think the ref will be a control freak cunt that breaks the game down as soon as it builds up.

Flint and Jervis for our goals.

Bogus Dave is a cunt.

This thread to close with SuggWillSugg opening another.  Prediction for that thread would be 2-1 with Jervis and Kerrouche on the scoresheet.

Prediction for this one is 1-2 with pitchforks being sharpened for the lynching of Bogus Dave.

Fucks sake who started this crazy notion of the person who starts the thread is key to the outcome of the game.  This is genuinely playing on my mind now...

There's no reason why we shouldn't win having won the last two away games, and three wins on the trot would get me very excited about our promotion prospects.  A defeat would put us potentially 12 points behind league leaders Crawley which would also be a devastating blow at this stage.

I fancy us to win as confidence should be high and there'll be an emotional will to win from Paolo tonight.  Things are seemingly starting to click and the consistency is coming together.  I see the fact we supposedly were a bit crap on Saturday but still won as a positive.  Tonight we can kick on, get the performance to match the result and hammer them 4-0 with anonymous unknown loanees getting three and Flint grabbing the first crucial goal.

Besides, the Pikeys are shit away from home.

11 of those 16 came in two games against Hereford and Torquay, which skews it massively. Other than those 2 games they've score 1 per game.

To some extent, yes. But if they said Gills had won all their home games and lost all their away games then you'd say they were quite meaningful. The fact that they've won 3 away games so far this year serves (imo) as an indicator that they're no pushovers away from home (or as much as a bunch of caravan-dwelling pikeys ever can be away from home...)

I know...their form is almost identical to ours and the points difference is so small it's hardly worth worrying about.  It could go either way.

But I'm excited.  A win tonight and we'll have started to build a decent run and very possibly put ourselves in to the play off/promotion places for the first time as well.  (Being top after the Crewe game doesn't count.)

Any idea what time the turnstiles shut?

Can't get there in time for kick off, but I have a Season Ticket anyway so may pop down about half an hour in if they're still going to have the doors open.

Fingers crossed for this evening.

With no significant reasoning, I've got it into my head that these next two games will indicate (to me) if we can truly sustain a promotion chase. By beating Accrington and Plymouth we've done the tricky bit now let us make home "advantage" count.

YOU REDS.

They normally have 1 turnstyle in every stand open until half time, so should be fine with that.

Got a really bad feeling about tonight. Midweek games in the pissing rain often ask major questions of attitude and professionalism. Potentially, this could be a weakness - given the amount of loanees we've got in the starting line-up.

Can't see Montano being too interested tonight. Also, the slippery ball will be difficult for a young goalkeeper.

I can see us losing this :headhurts: . Please provide me wrong!!!

Pretty even first half to be honest.

It's looking likely to be decided by the odd goal, and Ritchie's long range effort apart we haven't really looked like scoring. That said, other than the scramble when McCormack was injured neither have they.

On Ritchie's goal…

He proved at the end that he has so much energy. I am happy to see him score but one day I would like to score a simple goal. At times we are too elegant, but it never happens that we score a simple goal! If we can keep scoring goals like Ritchie's then so be it. I couldn't score a goal like that as a player. My legs used to be like mozzarella cheese so late on in a game!

Brilliant game of football between 2 good sides who pass the ball well. Great entertainment that. I thought we were superb in the first 30 minutes or so. Our passing play was brilliant and sometimes we either tried one pass too many or the final ball wasn't quite good enough.

After that though Gillingham really got into the game. They passed the ball really well and kept the game flowing at a great tempo. Kuffour really should have scored that rebound from all but 2 yards out but credit to Foderingham it was a great save to tip the initial header onto the bar and it was fantastic to see McCormack ensure that Kuffour failed to get the ball over the line. That's the sort of thing we haven't seen here for years.

2nd half Gillingham continued to press and produce good football. They hit the post where they really should have scored and we really couldn't get anything going. Then Paolo makes a great change and brings on Connell. I dont know what it is but he offers something that all of our other strikers don't and he's a real impact player.

It changed the game and that strike from Ritchie was pure class. Best goal i've seen at the CG for a fair few years in fact it's probably up there in my top 5 goals i've seen at the CG full stop. Sweet strike keeper had no chance and it went like a rocket. How Kedwell missed a sitter for them a few minutes later I will never know but Smith came up with a pearler of his own that was class. For once we didn't sit back and took advantage of Gills pushing forward.

Perhaps undeserved tonight but we'll take it. I sense a real team spirit, desire to win and our good fitness coming through now. Keeping it up will be tough but I think we have a chance this season. Both teams will be up there come May. Gills the best team i've seen play us so far.

By fuck we rode our luck tonight but 2 stunning goals. Despite their chances we still passed the ball well at times. The difference at the moment is the back 4 with Wes being the final piece of that puzzle. With the players we have in the attacking third we will always create chances.

Caddis is also outstanding at the moment and the partnerships are all over the pitch with the exception of the top 2

Wasn't the best performance in the world tonight. We put some nice moves together in the first half but most came to nothing, probably through us trying to be a bit too clever. Then for quite a while we struggled to put moves together - we gave the ball away, we lumped it forward to nobody... Jervis and Montano were really struggling to hold the ball up. Meanwhile Gills were asking a lot of questions of our defence and almost found a way through. Goodness knows how McCormack kept that ball out in the first half - I'd have given him man of the match for that alone. Then in the second they had a good strike come back off the post followed by their bloke getting the ball stuck under his foot when the goal was gaping. We rode our luck, but then made the most of it! We began putting a few moves together going forward but still we weren't putting the finishing touches on them, until Ritchie took things into his own hands. How it dipped below the bar I still don't understand, but what a strike! Then Gills came forward in search of the equaliser and we looked dangerous on the break, with Ferry bursting forwards and Connell doign a good job of holding the ball up and letting the midfield make runs - something that had been lacking previously. Then of course Connell laid the ball off perfectly for Smith who had acres of space but decided to hit it first time, curling it into the corner of the net. You just knew it was a goal before the ball even left his boot.

Good win, and the table is looking much better now than 2 weeks ago. Let's not spoil it aganist Bradford - they are in dire form and we need to take advantage of that, rather than having a repeat of the Hereford debacle.

Well, we certainly rode our luck a few times and 15 minutes or so from the end, I couldn't see us scoring.  Enter Matt Ritchie with a superb strike.

Gillingham managed to someone mess up the opportunity to draw level after a slight defensive mix-up, but we pushed on and Smith scored a great goal.

It wasn't one of our best performances and our final ball at times was woeful.  Last season we would have lost that game without a shadow of a doubt.  The differences in the team spirit and mentality are immense.   We never gave up, won the game in the latter stages not looking at our best, got a bit lucky and kept a clean sheet.  That has all the signs of a team going places.

Great strikes, used a bit of overdue luck tonight and 3 more points, in the play offs now...lets keep building on it and top 3 by Xmas....COYR!

p.s- IMO i thought Ritchie was pretty poor again for 80 mins, but wow what a goal and what it did for his confidence last 10 mins and hopefully he will grow in leaps and bounds once more!

Not his best game by any means but he showed why he is a matchwinner, average performance and then a moment of magic.

Not sure how we won tonight, the Gills should have been a couple up before we scored but we dug a result out against a good team who will almost certainly be top 7 come the end of the season.

Good times

We rode our luck for a bit but we are vertically looking more solid at the back and Foderingham is class.

Two awesome goals, and I still don't know how they didn't score tonight, the miss near the end was brilliant!

Agree with the comments about Ritchie - 79 minutes with very little creativity or end-product, then BOOM! What a strike. After that he was galvanised - hoepfully he'll carry that confidence into the game on Saturday and tear them a new one!

We must have put all their lucky heather around our goal tonight. We were very lucky not to concede but scored two outstanding goals. At last we've got a keeper who looks as though they're a keeper. Their keeper wasn't too shabby either.
Our final ball all evening was shite but in the end it didn't matter.
Nouble was interesting in his lime green boots - he spent the whole game either offside or on his arse, that latter within the first 10 seconds.
I'm happy tonight. A lucky win but when was the last time we said that.
Unfortunately I think the Pikeys will be up there at the end of the season.

Just back.  It was a great game of football.  We were good until Mcormack went off and that seemed to disrupt us.  Gills came back very well in the second half and we then couldn't find a pass.  Aimless football for a while.

You sensed something was going to happen as we finally strung some passes together and Ferry, god bless him, is the new Micky Hazard.  He did that getting boxed in by players and then turning round in a circle and laying off a lovely pass thing that I always remember Hazard doing.

From that came Ritchies fantastic strike which really was a pearler.  Its up there with Hoddle against Sunderland in the promotion to the premiership season.  Gills were obviously going to come back at us but as they came forward they made a few mistakes.  Connell timed his run perfectly with Gills players looking for offside, pulled it back superbly and as people have said before, you just knew Smith was going to hit the back of the net.

All in all not the best performance but a great game, lit up by two stunning strikes.

Loving the team spirit, and loving the feeling of nicking points rather than giving them away.

My one nagging doubt is that the subs bench still looks unbalanced, and you struggle to see what options PDC has to change things in a match. Having said that, if Gabilondo had been on the bench Ritchie might not have been on the pitch to score.

Me and the boys have decided that the bloke who sits about 5 rows behind us in the family enclosure and yells advice to Paolo and the players is our favourite fan ever.

And also, I liked the tactic of the keeper sending it out to Ritchie from long kicks as their left back was a midget.  Ferry looked gigantic against him.  I checked on their website as I couldn't believe he was a grown up.  His height is stated as 5 foot 4.  We always claim a couple of extra inches though don't we.

Really enjoyed the match...good team were Gills and the defence were outstanding.
Thought Jervis did well with his interplay and the game was a credit to both teams.
But what really caught my eye tonight was the keeper Fotheringham....he shows how important it is to have a good one, when the defence was under pressure he was there.
Flint is a great player in the making and Smith is looking a bargain..........happy days.

First game I've been to in a while, two things stood out for me....

Our fitness level made a massive difference and ultimately was what won the game. For the last 30 minutes Gillingham just weren't in the game, they may have had some chances but didn't take them where as we did. Over the last couple of seasons we've lost a lot of points in the last 10 minutes, where as this season we are winning points at the end. This is solely down to the increased fitness levels we have this season.

The team spirit is off the scale. You'd be forgiven for thinking we'd just won the World Cup given the way the entire team and every single person on the bench celebrated the first goal. Same at the final whistle, with the physio / assistant manager literally skipping off the pitch punching the air in joy. It's obvious they're in it together, working as a team and I don't remember ever seeing a Swindon Town team like it.

All of which is down to PDC. Never understood why the West Ham fans viewed him so highly, but I'm getting it now.

Tried it once or twice on Saturday too. On the first occasion, the defender knew Ritchie was going to get past him if his touch was good so he just went in with his foot up on Ritchie's ankle... yellow card! Could well prove fruitful if teams aren't alert to it.

This Richards bloke sounds quite handy...

Quote
Almost immediately the Wiltshire side broke and Richards, worryingly in space down the right, saw his low shot saved by Flitney.

Swindon broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from that man Richards in the 78th minute that gave Flitney little chance as it flew into the top corner.

Last night I witnessed the strangest thing I've seen for a while. Throughout the game the lino insisted on coaching the players and giving them advice. I can't believe an official is allowed to try and influence a game in that manner.

He was saying things like, watch it, be careful, don't be stupid, watch the ball, good pass, well done, keep your head up, well played, excellent ball...

Have to say I was more impressed with him at centre back than left back, but to be fair he is missing match sharpness.

Not sure he is a free kick taker though. If you want someone to hit a piledriver at the wall just let Flint do it.

Well that was a fantastic result against what would appear to be a good side in the Jills.

Listening on the radio I couldnt make out if it was a good game or not, and reading back through this thread half the people say it was a good game and we played well and half say we were not very good and rode our luck hugely, I guess it does show that football is often a matter of opinion.

There does appear to be a great team spirit now with all at the club on and off the pitch, I have always had faith in PdC, even after the Saints debacle when a lot of fans were calling for him to go. I think he will become a legend at the CG.

I feel that this could possibly emulate the season under Macari in 85-86, its panning out in a very similar way as that season did way back 25 years ago.....

We started off very poorly only 2 wins and 1 draw in the first 8 games compared to 3 wins and 0 draws in the first 8 games this season.

After 15 games that season we were in 8th place and had won 8, drew 1 and lost 6 games compared to being in 7th place and won 8, drew 1 and lost 6.......coincidence? :)

The only difference is that we have scored more and conceded less than that famous season, that season we had scored 18 and let in 19 compared to this season when we have scored 25 and conceded 15 goals at the same stage.

Yes its the ramblings of a deluded old git but it does bear a striking resemblance to that season when we went on and recorded 102 points.

Also that season we scraped out a lot of 1 and 2 goal wins, sometimes against the run of play and rode our luck like at Plymouth at the weekend and there was a great team spirit as we have now and the level of fitness of the team was very high as it is now.

I think it all bodes welll for the future.

I think we badly need to keep Foderingham, Jervis shows bags of promise and scored a couple of good goals so could do with keeping him, Montano was poor at Plymouth but obviously has potential, Ridehalgh the jury is out on but does seem to offer more defensively than Kennedy but has pretty poor distribution and Abdulla seems to have something about him, I know we can extend the loans to full season ones, but only 4 of them and one of those is Abdulla so its 3 from the other 4....if PdC rates them worthy of longer loan deals and if their clubs want them to stay.

It's interesting to compare this season to our last in Div 4.....then after a flying start we were 3rd with 31 points, behind leaders Walsall and Lincoln.  Wise and Poyet were just about to walk.  However despite the lack of continuity, we managed to scrape 3rd.

HPool under Wilson were back on 18 points, yet took 2nd.

Poor old Lincoln now look like heading to Conference North.   All of which shows, although some things will stay the same between now and the end of the season, a lot will change.

PDC may well come to regret making Abdulla a season long loan, he wont be breaking up the Smith/Ferry partnership for a while it seems.

Foderingham would be a no-brainer if opportunity to keep him for longer arises.

I would also tie down Ridehalgh for longer as well, stronger defensively and is no mug going forward either.  Put in a few nice balls into the box last night.

I've read comments on TEF this week wishing for Matt Ritchie to be dropped and the stating Jonathan Smith is rubbish.

I say let's take it one game at a time.

Connell, for example, clearly huffs and puffs. Based on the two appearences I've seen Connell in a Town shirt plus the games I've seen him play elsewhere, he doesn't stop working but rarely looks like scoring. His Rotherham appearance was great fun though.

We're winning... Let's keep it as it is (injuries aside).

Montano wasnt with the program regards his work ethic. Should have been subbed earlier. De Vita also had a poor game, seemed to spend far too much time in field out of position. Dont know if Di Canio's praise from the Plymouth game has gone to his head a bit?

That first half was as good a standard of football that you will get in L2. Very fast pace, with loads of 1 touch passes from both teams. It was pretty equal until McCormack went off and then I thought they shaded it. Their midfield looked excellent to me, but their forwards are probably not as good as Gills fans think they are. It was probably the best Ive ever seen Nouble play, but still not that great, and Kuffour is looking a bit past it. If they get some decent strikers and some more composure in front of goal then they should be top 3.

Positives for us, Flint, Ferry, J Smith and Foderingham. Poor noise from our crowd, we got outsung by 400 Gills fans, which is dire. Our fans were also getting on players backs at 0-0, which was stupid considering Jills were clearly the best team weve played in the league so far at the CG.

Great to see people drawing comparisons to Ritchie's goal with Hoddle's against Sunderland. Top class that only top players can produce. I suspect any team comming down will double up on him now and he wont be allowed that much time on that left foot.

I can only presume that these are coming from armchair "fans" with few functioning braincells.

Ritchie hasn't been at his best for a few games but I think he has been just about our best player over the season so far; he's always going to be a bit up and down but he has the quality to win matches which is rare at this level.  Also, any team doing a bit of homework mark him out as the dangerman, freeing space for others.

I think Smith is the most improved since the start of the season.  At first I thought he'd be no more than a back-up player but now I'd want him in every week.  I thought he was one of our best players at Plymouth.

Hoddle  had about three hours to pick the shot in comparison.

He had
Can remember us leading Bradford 4-0 at half time with a Quinn hat trick years back.........and then the fog came.

Not sure about that score....I'm thinking more 3-0...think Phil King got a goal maybe his first for Town, but then it was wiped off.

Ref was David Elleray....tried to see it out , but you couldn't see the end of your arm.  Never known such a dense fog before or since.

Dunno who scored - Couldn't see! Remember we were winning easily. Iirc the rearranged game was a very different story.

Ended up 2-2, when they scored in about the 7th minute of added on time.  Pre, having to tell you how long was being added on, days.  Elleray again....subsequently I came to like the balding Harrovian school master  :)

Agree. Some of his interceptions were brilliant, he was reading everything they tried.

Did anyone notice late in the 2nd half, just before we scored, a shot came in from Gills around the 18 yeard box and Cibocchi stepped out and appealed for offside, as the shot was coming in. I've never seen that before by a player.  ;D

Arriba slagged them right off before he quit the forum.

Yes, he did indeed have ages (to pick his spot from 30 yards and pop it in the top corner with his wrong foot....) genius creates time and space in a way which ensures we remember it so vividly 20 odd years later.  The treacle analogy is spot on: Hoddle made time stand still.

Incidentally, I've just rewatched that goal as I was searching for Glenda's England debut goal v Bulgaria....which I was reminded of by Jonathan Smith's beaut the other night.

And I do remember the 8 year old strop I had as I couldn't go to that Everton game, and then listening to the replay...weren't we winning until lateish on before losing?

Ridiculous to put my name into a debate about here and now and drag up a 2 month old thread.(i stand by what i said by the way)

Have always had a liking for Deadly's goal at Watford.
If I recall he had scored his first goal for Town in the midweek before (although that was largely because the keeper threw it in), and there were a few Town fans starting to get on his back for the lack of goals. So that one at Watford was even more out of the blue.

In fact I liked it so much I bought the match video from Watford. Tom Jones' goal in the same game wasn't too shabby either.
