Title: XBox 360 Red Ring Of Death
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Thursday, October 20, 2011, 19:36:03
Just taken up floor in the kitchen/playroom and created loads of dust. Went to turn on the boy's XBox and we now have a red ring with 3 lights. Quick look on internet shows a general failure.

The Xbox is out of warranty so was thinking of taking the thing apart and cleaning it out.

Anyone had this type of issue and been able to fix without taking it to a shop? Or can anyone recommend a cheap place to fix it?

I tried fixing mine and ended up breaking it even more.

What error code do you get?

I don't get a code. I have no display on the TV screen and 3 red lights flashing on the console.

Secondary error codes, about half way down.

Most likely the GPU.

Secondary codes shows 0110

Microsoft repaired mine out of warranty so give them a go first.

How much did it cost Sippo?

If its only £20 as Woolster says then I can't be bothered with the hassle of taking it to pieces.

Nothing. They picked it up and dropped it off via courier. It's a manufacturer fault and are aware of it. A lot of people think that cos its out of warranty that Microsoft will refuse to fix it but I found that wasn't the case.

So, just checked and am out of warranty. Microsoft will fix for £65 + VAT.

Anyone recommend anywhere else?

Keep the hard drive, throw away the console. Lots of Xbox's second hand available in game shops and pawn shops for about £60.

Guess what?

Got it fixed and it worked for just over a year and has gone again.

Repair price is now £30. Wondering now whether to do it or get a new replacement?

My PS3 broke the other week. Original model, just had the green light and was very quiet (think the fan stopped) No output. Seemed dead with a green light.

What was wrong with it before when it got repaired and is it the same problem?

Guaranteed for 28 days. The fact that the kids have used it constantly for 14 months has been worth the £20.

Same problem. Three red lights with a secondary code of 0110 GPU error.

I somehow read read 'year' as 'week'

Not heard of that one before, my PS3 has had YLOD twice in the last 6 months, bought a super slim the other day for £125. Also suffered RROD and faulty disc drive on 2 xboxes. Bad year for my consoles.

They probably reflowed (heated up the old solder) or reballed (cleaned off old solder and added new solder) to the GPU chip. If they did the same again it should last for a similar amount of time minimum.

Chances are there will be a brand new console out by then that the kids will nag you for. I personally wouldn't waste money on another console which has the same technology.

Thanks for that. When you put it like that it seems worth spending £30 rather than buying a new one for the best part of £200.

had the same fault. Phoned Sony who replaced the 60gig  one with a slim 160gig one. Had to pay 110 quid though. The fault you mention is a hard drive failure in most cases

If its just a hard drive failure then its a cheap and piss easy thing to fix on the original. Hopefully someone will have a spare hard disk to try before having to commit to buying a new one..

Bit of a pisser you lose all your data though.

Think mine was about 4-5 years old when it first went wrong.

My old 360 broke about 18 months after i originally got it (2006) then i decided to flog it a few years back and 2 weeks later it broke again so i got a lucky escape. The newer model is supposed to fix the problem with the vent built in at the top of the console.

I've had a PS3 since 08 and never had a single problem with it. deffo more reliable. That said i havent used it as much as i have the xboxs.

Where can you get it repaired for £30?  The red ring appeared on ours last week.  It's got to be at least 8 years old though, so don't know if it's worth it.

I had it done here:

http://www.yourgeekfriend.co.uk/game-console-repair-360-ps3-psp-gloucester-cheap/xbox-360-repair-gloucester-cheltenham/

Gave me an extra 14 months - Worked like a charm (And it was heavy usage by my 3 kids). Spoke to the guy today. He's going to check it and see if it can be repaired again. Can't recommend the chap enough.

Took it in today. He works from a shed attached to the side of his house. Only a small operator, but very good, helpful and responsive.

Hmm, I would need to factor in travel expenses to and from Swindon as well, which would push up the repair bill by a fair bit.  Will have a think.  Thanks again.

Turns out they can't fix the XBox, so I'll have to buy a new one.

It had a 250Gb hard drive on the side of it. Have looked on line and can see how to salvage it for the new Xbox 360 Slim. My question now is whether I should get a 4GHz (and tadd the 250GB) or a 250GB (and still add the 250Gb)? Not sure how much of the original 250Gb was being used.

Thoughts?

I didn't think you could add a hard drive to the new 360s as they have built in ones. You have to get a data transfer cable in order to get it across. I'd say with this in mind you'll need a 250gb.

You can't add the HDDs that fit the old models, but you can take the old hard drive out of its casing and add the old one. Look here:

i had it a few times with my 360, usually it was just a problem with the plug, adapter or power connection to the back of the console.

It can mean various things. There's a series of steps you can do to determine the problem. I'll try and find them.

http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/Xbox-360-error-codes.htm

There's that, that's not quite what I remember doing. It involved pressing a series of buttons and it'd make the ring flash in certain ways and from there you could determine what the code was and then what that code meant.
