Title: Wurzels v STFC - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Gnasher on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 09:15:08
In a bid to change our luck, I'll start one of these for the first time (and the last if we lose).

Brizzol City 2 - 2 Town (we win 3-2 in extra time)

I see the Daily Press are calling us League 2 minnows. I wonder if they'd say the same about Rovers?  :hmmm:

Doesn't anyone have a small glimmer of hope ?

In this tournament the 'underdogs' are always likely to spring a surprise and to that extent, there is hope of an upset, especially with City's relatively poor start to the season.

However out lack of ability to defend set pieces is a major worry and Nicky Maynard could take us to the cleaners. Hope we give Connell 90 minutes and the Czech striker gets a bit of a runabout.

A little worryingly, we seem to be still a bit experimental and I am not sure PDC is anywhere close to knowing his regular team yet.

Probable line-ups anyone?

Lanzano, Caddis, Comazzi(if fit)/Devera(if not), Flint, Kennedy, Ritchie, Ferry, McCormack(If fit)/Risser, Gabilondo, Clarke, Magera

Subs: P Smith, J Smith, Connell, Esajas, Thompson.

Glad someone else started the thread. I've retired after my Dagenham fiasco.

I think we might flourish without the pressure and expectation on our back. I'm hoping to see Connell get a start with Clarke. Would also like to see Gabilondo start.

Looking forward to it!

2-1 Town.

Yes there is, I forgot about him!

See Edit for further details...

Although if that is the team tonight (edited version) that will be 9 from the previous starting line-up, looking good for some stability (hopefully).

We will definitely win tonight.  City need to focus on the league, and di Canio will be eyeing a turnaround in fortunes and be keen to set the record straight in derbies....

Di Canio was born for nights like tonight.

I'm just hoping we put up a good fight really. I see it more as a bonus game in which PDC can start to settle a side rather than one where the result is important. Obviously I don't want to lose though!

I'll go for a spirited 2-1 defeat, with both their goals coming from open play.

Agree, though it would be nice for Magera to do an Aguero in the last 30 mins! A win would restore faith to the, IMO premature, PDC Doubters!

You are fucking negative though Reg. You do always seem to want us to lose and always seem to enjoy it when we do. That may well not be the case but that is my perception.

I know, I know. You will play the 'I'm just being realistic' card but realists do see positives as well as negatives. If you do see a positive you will qualify it by saying, 'yeah, but it won't last. This is Swindon, every silver lining has a cloud' or some such.

You are of course entitled to your views but if I had such a jaded view of the club I really wouldn't bother with it. I have to be able to believe that things can and will get better. It's what keeps me going.

Well it's on club website so I assume it's not on the Beeb. I have to say though, it's only £3.99 per month for STFC World and if you subscribe now you will get the commentary straight away. It's well worth getting if you live outside Swindon/Wiltshire.

Hope Connell shines tonight, would love him to get above Ryvita in the pecking order.  Can't see what Di Canio sees in the fella.

Other than that new keeper in for Smith and Devera replaced by a decent centre half and that isn't a bad side at all. Not forgetting Bam Magera on t'bench.

the good news for the cheese and beer lovers is I have a sizeable quantity of brie and leffe in the car.

2119: And now Paolo Di Canio's League Two side Swindon take the lead at Bristol City - in continental style, too - as Spaniard Lander Gabilondo picks out Italian striker Raffaele De Rita for an easy header past David James.

it wasnt easy at all

So here we go, I'll try my best on my phone:

Smith - Didn't put a foot wrong. Kicked well, made some smart saves.
Caddis - thought he was excellent. Linked up well with Ritchie and made a few great runs into the box.
Devera - Poor in the first half, got better in the second (I think, he was a long way away)
Flint - Was a beast, again. Won headers, solid on the floor.
Kennedy - Has a bit of a hoofball issue. Was slightly better in the second half.
Gabilondo - Christ he's fast! Loves to take on his man. Set up the goal and was generally dangerous. Didn't get the ball as much as Ritchie.
Ferry - He was awesome tonight. Ran his socks off, tackled well, passed well, kept possession, great stuff all round.
Smith - Was impressive. Goes about his business without being noticed, but I was generally impressed compared to early season reviews.
Ritchie - Was everywhere tonight. Cut into shoot frequently, very energetic. missed an absolute sitter early on.
Clarke - Godd target man, ran all night and linked up well with Connell.
Connell - Linked up nicely with Clarke on a few occasions. Puts himself about a bit.

McCormack - provided some extra running in midfield towards the end. Did everything he needed to do well and picked up his customary booking.
De Vita - wasn't too bad. A few mis-placed passes but he did score, and took his goal nicely.
Magera - Looks a class act. Was good in the air and has the sweetest left foot. He pinged out a 40 yard pass to Gabi. Inch perfect.

Hard to pick a MOTM, Between Ferry and Flint for me.

From OTIB

Quote
Swindon weren't great but we made them look it. Their keeper had one save to make from what I remember? Our shaky defence allowed Swindon to put dangerous crosses into the box on numerous occasions, but apparently thats too much for our 'championship' team to manage.

Also bugs the hell out of me when Swindon are 1-0 up, Di Canio is all over the place screaming at his players and Keef stands there like a lost little boy with his arms folded

Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, 21:30:25
This is a good one from OTIB...

The players just didn't seem interested. They repeatedly did exactly what they did against Pompey and wellied in crosses which were easily dealt with by the two Swindon centre halves both about 7ft tall. It didn't seem to occur to anyone that it was a wasted tactic.

Millen brought on Albert second half and he livened City up briefly but lacked support. No shots on goal with Pitman having the same problem as Maynard did and got no service. Once Swindon scored every City fan knew it was all over.

Taylor looked like a lower league player, all he did was try to flick on high balls.

City lose to a lower league team and join a long list of both PL and Championship clubs who have done the same.

That all said credit to Swindon who didn't look like a basement outfit and if they play like tonight every week then they'll be certs for automatic.

Jedward only had one shot all game. Was late in the first half and sailed way over the bar. Only thing he did poorly all game.
Who was your Motm Welshred?  How did Gabilondo & Clarke play tonight?  Was Ferry and McCormack better or Ferry & J. Smith or did they all play as equally well?  What was your 1st impressions of Magera?

So now what happens? Stick with a winning side? Sounds like they all deserve to keep their place. Connell or De Vita to start? Big Czech man to wait? What about the Arsenal dude?

Terrific game, just got back, wouldn't like to pick a MoM but our wingplay was fantastic, Gabilondo looks a real find.

Tough to pick a MOTM. Ferry was excellent, as was Flint. Caddis, P Smith and Gabi all deserve a mention. Nobody was poor tonight.

Smith did well in midfield. Did everything required of him. McCormack provided some much needed fresh legs, and certainly did nothing wrong.

Magera looks a class act. He'll be a key player this season, no doubt about it.

I'd still start with Connell. He didn't score but he puts defences under more pressure than De Vita. I don't think Magera is quite ready for a start. So Clarke and Connell for the Shrews.

Fair play to Devera, he played well tonight. The Arsenal guy might have to wait.

Thanks Welshred sounded like a Stirling performance from our lads.  Saturdays going to interesting at Shrewsbury for sure.  They knocked Swansea out of the cup last night so they will be buzzing however the win tonight for us will give our lads a huge lift.

Should be a good game

If Connell's injured then the decision is simplified...although De Vita scoring is a tricky one, was a good header but I really didn't think he stood out beyond that.

I stand by my previous posts of we're not that far away and tonight we were awsome. Ace turnout though no away attendance was broadcast but I estimate 1500 town fans.

Difficult to pick a motm but I chose Phil Smith. The new striker will bed in and turn out to be an inspired piece of dealing. Gabilondo very skilful, ah fcuk it, they were all hero's. Di Canio's tribute to both his players and the town fans at the end was from the heart and he, they and us earned it.

Roll  on the Shrews.

Stars to a man.  Jedward edging man of the match for me.  Bundle of energy that boy.

Just got back. This doesn't make up for Sunday but it tastes very sweet indeed. If you were a neutral you'd have said we were the Championship team. We should have had this game put to bed by half time. No bad performances today. Devera looked a bit better thankfully. DeVita has something different about him. I don't think he's the useless twat most think. Gabilondo could be a real find albeit a one footed find.
A good night tonight. Good support for Town and the City fans ( those that turned up 0 were pathetic.
Good reactions from PdC at the end.

Big thanks for Dosno for driving us there, and DRS was on top form  :D :D

Brilliant performance tonight - can't fault it ! We totally outplayed Shitty and dominated the game - in the first half there was only one team in it !

The defence looked solid and again, Flint was immense. Ferry was everywhere and Ritchie and the new Spanish winger were a constant threatening force out wide. The strikers
worked hard and got into good positions, but were guilty of wasting some of the great chances created for them.

I believe the key to our success was the way we closed them down so quickly and fiercely - they had no room or time to think let alone play !!

The support from the fans was brilliant and totally drowned out the subdued Shitty support.

The players and PDC really seemed to enjoy the support and came over at the end to celebrate - think this is a taste of things to come !!”

Can't really add anything to what's already been said, we were fantastic.

Moment of the day... City fans responding to David James' save from Matt Ritchie with "You couldn't score in a brothel", only to see the ball come straight back at them and end up in the back of the net seconds later.

"Score in a brothel, we couldn't score in a brothel..." :D

Fantastic support tonight in both numbers and volume!

I just watched that video of Paolo and the players coming over to the fans. It's this that will get fans coming back, because it makes you really want to be involved.

His attention to fans is clearly from his point of view as a fan. I wished I'd gone, but seeing him appreciate his players and making them show respect to us is superb and made me regret not going even more. He's going to really endear himself to the fans and make fans want to become more involved, especially if we're winning.

[STFC_GAZZA ENTHUSIASM] I know it's only one game, or 2 perhaps, but as I said some time back, I think Paolo's reign will become legend.[/STFC_GAZZA ENTHUSIASM]

Apart from the 2nd half of the 1st half (when we didn't do much) we absolutely battered them. Ritchie, Ferry and Gabilondo were immense. We didn't look like a League 2 team, City had near enough their strongest squad out and we dominated the game for large parts and played them off the park. Then at the end with Di Canio and the players, made me feel so proud to be a town fan, just a great night all round.

Nights like these make me remember why I first fell in love with football. Just brilliant.

Don't want to get carried away with last night - it was only 1-0 and City just didn't look up for it. Time and time again we won the ball and our reaction was "how easy was that?". That said, it was good to get Sunday partially out of our system, and good to see certain players put  in some really solid performances.

We were good, not exceptional. One noticeable flaw is that the players aren't quick enough to offer themselves and provide an easy ball out for whoever is in possession. Real signs of the team coming together though and the Town fans were superb. Very surprised they had us down as 1400 - it seemed twice that. Great acoustics in that stand as well - it was like singing into a megaphone.

It has to be said as well, di Canio is a lunatic. Never seen so much hand waving or punching of the dugout in my life, and his theatrics at the end were like we'd just won promotion. I'm not complaining, it's great to see someone really care, and it's quite entertaining.

Smith - didn't put a foot wrong. Commanded the box better than he has done in the past and a top save low to his left down at the far end in the second half.

Caddis - I've seen criticism of him (here or the Adver, not sure) which I can't understand. I thought he was one of our better players - he got forward and supported Ritchie really well, great run in the first half and offered Ritchie an option more often than not. The difference between the support he gave Ritchie to what Kennedy gave Gabilondo was noticeable.

Devera - beat Pitman in the air 90% of the time, but very poor distribution. Comazzi and Boateng breathing down his neck.

Flint - my MoM, he was a rock.

Kennedy - a lucky man that Adomah's couple of runs came infield rather than down the line. I think he may have caused Callum a few problems. He was ok, couple of decent free kick deliveries, but distribution wasn't up to scratch and ended up pumping it into the left channel over and over again, or just down the keepers throat. In the same situation, caddis was finding Ritchie, finding the man inside, or going past him.

Ritchie - looked a threat, probably more so on the right than the left, which I didn't think I'd be saying. Was always looking to cut in, and caused problems all night. Unlucky not to score at the end of the first half with a shot that Gerken saved down to his left.

Ferry - solid enough, harried them, and used the ball quite well. He and Smith in the first half had a lot of work to do tracking across what was a huge pitch, seems much wider than the CG, when City switched the ball and was often behind the play. Did enough to show he should start though, along with McCormack.

Smith - flashes of a very good prospect, but use of the ball wasn't as efficient as Ferry. Likes to run with it through the middle perhaps a bit too much. That said, iron out a few wrinkles and its clear there is a player there.

Gabilondo - wasn't expecting him to be a 'real' player for us as his signing was a bit on the quiet. fair to say he's going to feature a lot this year. Di canio's chat about him being good on a one-on-one is spot on - whether it's actually beating the man or shaping one way to give space to cross the other, he gets the ball in the box. He is lightweight, and could do wioth bulking up a bit. Will drift in and out of games. Calm for the goal - which was all a bit too easy.

Clarke - the ball stuck to him, and he caused problems all night - deceptively quick for a guy his size. It'll be good to see him notch his first for us at the weekend.

Connell - missed an absolute sitter in the first 3 minutes which must have played on his mind. Other than that, looked tidy, seemed to link well with Clarke - each playing the other in on a few occasions. Better than De Vita.

De Vita - other than the goal, I can't see the attraction. That's not to say the guy is without ability, but Connell didn't deserve to come off.

McCormack - first I've seen of him, and has to be first choice alongside Ferry. gets stuck in, plays the easy ball.

Magera - Didn't see much, but what we did see suggests he's not a donkey and may well have actually played international football.

£10 well spent.

Skysports saying we had to survive and early onslaught from Bristol City. Clueless cunts.
We had 2 or 3 great chances in the first 10 minutes and how we weren't 2-0 up by then I do not know.
I only recall City having one half chance when Pitman shot wide.

Thanks for your post (and to the others too). Some of us couldn't go so its good to get an honest appraisal. On the above, part of it is probably the team getting to know each other. But part of it has to be that we were going there on the back of three straight defeats. Confidence must have been a bit lower than a team flying high.

Very important win yesterday. Fan confidence was sliding a bit, but the signings we've made, the Oxford performance and the City result should see optimism return. If we can get a point or three against the plastic STFC then the season is GO!

I'm sure you'd all like to read what whathisface (City manager) had to say:

http://www.bcfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10327~2428528,00.html

Quote
Keith Millen apologised to City's supporters after the 1-0 home defeat to local rivals Swindon Town in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Rafaelle De Vita scored the only goal of the game 19 minutes from time, but it was the home side's lacklustre display that concerned Keith most.

Speaking on Bristol City Player, the manager said: "Swindon were the better team and deserved to win.

"Right from the start we never got going. They had a few early chances and we were never able to fight our way back into it.

"We were fortunate to be in at 0-0 at the break. We needed to liven up because we were there to be beaten.

"The second half was a little better but it still wasn't enough. They had more hunger and scored the winner. The goal they scored summed us up.

"Just when you think we're going in the right direction we put in a performance like that. We had to make a few changes but we had enough quality out there to win the game."

He continued: "They've let themselves and the club down tonight. You could see the fans' reaction at the end. If you lose and you've worked hard, people understand, but we didn't have enough desire to take the game to them.

"They're weren't many out there who did themselves justice. When that happens you get a performance like that; no one took the game by the scruff of its neck. We excepted it too easily and we'll have a long season ahead if that's the case.

"We've a lot of thinking to do and so have the players because that performance isn't acceptable.

"I apologise to the fans because they pay good money to come and see us and we haven't put on a show.

"I apologise to the fans because they pay good money to come and see us and we haven't put on a show."
Keith Millen
"It would be nice to get a consistent run together. We go one step forwards and one step back all the time."

Refreshingly honest.

This may be a little premature but am feeling unbelievably postive this morning about the rest of the season....its a combination of many things that culminated to a massive high last night, namely:

The result
The performance
The turn out  - there seems to be a real appetite for STFC at the moment (I also expect a bigger than average turnout at shrews)
the arrival of Magera
the arrival of Boatang
Gabilondo
the team we are building in general
PDCs antics
Jeremy Wray

I think things are really coming together and we are at a fork now...if we can take this form and apply it to the league II style game to get a win at shews, I seriously feel we rip this whole league a new one...

A loss at shrews, well normal service is resumed.

Certainly seems to be an optimistic air about from many, even with a couple of poor results before last night, as the team is still playing well on the whole.

Great to see people's videos of PdC and the players coming over to the fans last night as well. We have seen the unity he seems to have instilled in the squad with the whole side celebrating every goal with a big group hug, but the way he and the players have been at the end of games so far this season - win or lose - has been great. di Canio really seems to be trying to foster an atmosphere amongst players and fans alike that we're in this together.

In the same way that a negative atmosphere built around the CG over the course of last season this sort of thing can make a difference in my opinion, and hopefully if the support continues to be as good as it has been it will help the players lift their performances on the pitch.

I wasn't there last night but I felt like that all day yesterday.  I wasn't half as devastated to lose to Oxford as I thought I'd be simply because of the performance we put in.

If we can take this form into the league we are in for a good season.  I just hope we can do do that.  A win at Shrewsbury is whats needed for the remaining doubters....

I haven`t read all the posts but this sounds much more like it...what a relief. Only concern is League 2 isn`t reown for its footballing skills more brick shit house defenders and lots of high balls to contend with.....but hey onward and upwards...

We now have two strikers who can offer a credible aerial threat, hold the ball up and win flick-ons. Something we haven't had so far this season.

Indeed, he does have a tendency to jump very early.

But, just having a player who can challenge for the ball in the air puts so much more pressure on their defender, and the likelihood of them missing it, it not heading it away very far becomes much greater.

We'll get thumped 3-0.  Probably with a sending off as well.

Delighted to be proved wrong. I think that's probably kick started the season.....

I had a little look through the forum and it's funny how forum characters and attitudes translate almost in their entirety across various forums and between clubs.

You could likely pick any thread and change the club/player/manager names and see how easily football rants are like paining by numbers. Same issues, same moans, same reasoning, same old heads, same young heads, same vitriol, same positive counteraction... It's funny.

BCFC Bart seems really pleased about the whole thing.

That is very true, well certainly in the lower leagues anyway, not so much in the Premiership.

I thought Devera was much better last night, looked a lot more solid.

His distribution could have been better though.

Got our tickets for the Southampton game.

What chance of a big crowd?

I have a Southampton supporting cousin who lives in Taunton, who has just texted me to say that Swindon is too far to come for a cup match.

He didnt have to cope with high balls raining down on him I suspect...

Just watched the goal - he is unmarked, but its a very good header nonetheless.  Perhaps, just perhaps, there is something there with De Vita?  With Clarke, Magera, De Vita, Connell and Kerrouche we now at least have some options. If three of them can come good then we could be on to something.

De Vita has been slagged off on here but he is fast but a bit small. Could and should be a handful if playing of larger strikers. Lets hope so...

Di canio obviously sees something in De Vita, and hopefully the goal last night will kick start a run of form for him. He didn't particularly impress on the whole last night but he did finally win a couple of headers and show a nice touch or two. I want the guy to do well, as I do with anybody in a Swindon shirt... let's just hope he kicks on from here!

The team let alone the mangement are going to take a bit of time to get into what`s really needed to play in this league and with the players he has from what I have seen should have the quality. Its all down to sussing out exactly how to win. De Vita will be part of this. A bit of patience needed. Would be happier really if there was an experience hand as DiCanio right hand man...but dont think that will happen

Danny De Vito is our only striker with any pace about him. Kudos to selling 2 defenders shortly after the goal with a smart turn and good through ball in the box. I like him.

DeVita looks as though his natural position is in the hole linking up midfield and forwards rather than an out and out striker. He did that well yesterday.
I must admit there seemed a fair few more than 1400 there yeaterday - always a problem when you pay cash on the tunrstiles.

Pretty selective highlights there making it look a lot more even than it was. First half especially we had chance after chance.
