Title: help...
Post by: DiV on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 13:22:02
Right, I'm dog sitting at my parents house and I have bought my laptop. My laptop recognises the wireless internet connect here, picks it up and connects to it - its password protected but my laptop remembers the password and still connects. The password has not been changed since it last worked.

In effect there is no problem with my laptop picking up the connection, however - it wont load any web pages. All I get is 'You are not connected to the internet. Safari cant open blah blah blah because your computer isnt connected to the internet'

Its not the browser as I get the same with IE. Its not the connection as my dads laptop connects and loads web pages (hence how im posting this) from what I can see the connections are exactly the same on each laptop.

Its worked before, months ago and nothing has changed but it doesnt work now, anyone have any ideas?

Not getting an IP adress from DHCP? Does your laptop have a static IP assigned?

If nothing has changed at all (e.g. you havent put on a new anti virus that needs an exception rule etc) Right click on the wireless network, manually disconnect from the network then manually reconnect to it.

Errr quickly off the top of my head...

Ok, your dad's laptop connects ok, so the link from the router out is fine as you've mentioned. It's either your laptop itself, or the link between your laptop and the router.

Step 1 - see if laptop can reach the router, or even better, your dad's pc.
On your dad's pc navigate to Run --> CMD --> Type "ipconfig". Note down the ip address (will look like X.X.X.X where X = numbers).
From your pc, navigate to Run --> CMD --> and type "ping X.X.X.X" (where X.X.X.X = your dad's ip address).

If the reply's get through, and the connection is up it will say something like below...
Reply from X.X.X.X

Step 2- If that works, see if your PC can reach the internet...
If that works, can you try pinging again but this time "ping google.com"

If that works, then its probably something silly on your laptop, such as under File you have "work offline" ticked or similar!!

If not... well if not, can you please post the output of "IPCONFIG" from both your dad's and your PCs? as that will probably give us a good idea. Can you run through that and let us know how you get on?? and what happens? People on here can probably help you more after with that info :-)  :pint:

Have you run an ipconfig on both to check you have a valid IP address and the default gateway is the same?

After a bit of a fuck around, I think it was this. I lost connection to both laptops for a bit and now its working again on both!!

Sorry for suggesting anything you ungrateful fuckwit.

No offence.

everyone in the whole entire world knows the first step to solving any computer related problem is to turn it off and on again...

Cheers for all the other (useful) suggestions.

definitely him.

To have such a sulk and delete his account over me telling him I'm not a retard is, quite frankly pathetic.

There could have been more to it than that but whatever.

Yet you didn't know the second thing to check was the ip settings?

I think the answer here is don't ask for help if you don't actually want it, or if you get offered help and the person offering the help misunderstands what level of a fucktard you are, try to explain better in you original request for help the things that you have already tried, so that you don't have to respond the way you did.

The key word here, unless you've missed it is that you were asking for help, didn't explain that well what you had already done, JJ offered the help, and you chucked his offer of help back in his face by way of your response.  That's my take on it.

Here's a scenario.  You have broken down by the side of the road, somebody stops and offers help and says "have you ran out of petrol?" you respond by saying "no offense, but I'm not a retard, that's the first thing I checked", swiftly followed by passer by saying "fuck you then" and putting his foot down.  You are left stood by the side of the road, no further forward, and you have fucked off the one person that was trying to help you.

How to make friends and influence people!

Anyway, it's the done thing to delete your account these days don't ya know.

christ, how melodramatic.

This is forum where we all call each other cunts for fuck sake.

Grow a pair.

Of course, when you get melodramatic you just grow some hair.

Not being melodramatic, just putting my take on what has gone on here.  I've already put my point of view across on people deleting accounts (why not just log out).  Maybe this was the straw that broke the camels back, either way it was you asking for help not him.

Indeed, and I dont think my reply was that insulting was it? I told him I wasnt a retard and had already tried that as a first measure, like anyone does with any pc problem.

To go back to your analogy - it would be the like the passer by asking me if i'd tried starting my car whilst my car was stopped.

I dunno VD, there are members of this forum who didn't know you could buy a 2 pin shaver socket adapter plug

I've spoken to JJ today and it wasn't just this one incident, think he's just got fucked off in general with the tef, and DV in particular (Who hasn't?)

In fairness he did it the right way: no histrionics, no paddy, he just fucked off without any fuss.

Really? That's no surprise is it? You are only interested in what you post, not what others post. JJ is an all round good bloke and would do anything for anyone. I could think of a lot of people who I'd rather delete their account than him.

All water under the bridge now, he's gone.

Title: Re: help...

Really?

No, of course not. Why are people all of a sudden taking the TEF so seriously?

Title: Re: help...
Post by: herthab on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 21:23:48
As I said, it's all water under the bridge. It's obviously more than you being a twat, or else he would've gone long ago!

And don't worry Dan, I would never take you seriously.

Good! you still owe me a fiver.

I like JJ, I think he's a good poster and it is a shame he's gone. Sure, I might have been the tip of the iceberg today but certainly dont remember disagreeing or arguing with JJ at all, well ever - let alone recently.
