Title: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, February 7, 2011, 17:41:59
I think most folk now accept we're as good as down, so who do you want departing L2, and who joining us from L1 and arriving from the Conference.

I'd like to see Chesterfield , Rotherham, Bury and Port Vale going up, Stockport and Bradford going down.

Joining us Rovers, Argyle and Daggers, with Crawley and Wimbledon promoted.

This would leave Wycombe, Gills, Crewe, Scum, Our Reserves, Cheltnum, Torquay, Chavenage, Cobblers, Lincoln, Accrington Stanley, Shots, Morecambe, Hereford, Macclesfield, Barnet and Burton.

A fairly southern based league, with Morecambe as a new ground along with Burton Albion boasting added on brewing theme.

Only Accy and Maccy as pointless norvern journeys. Crewe, the ex railway Towns proving that developing young players and selling them on gets you to Div 4.....Lincoln make a weekend of it and take the missus.

Plenty of localish games with Crawley for revenge, as we all now hate them, and AFC for a love in from the TEF Dong haters.

What's not to like?

Worst idea for a thread, ever.

(There's a premature/Reg gag out there somewhere, but I'll leave that to someone else.)

There is no consolation whatsoever in going down. None.

'Ooh but we can play Oxford'. Fucking Pox, shit out of Town ground with 3 sides, with stands 3 miles away from the pitch and rabid inbred home fans. Fucking rubbish.

I'll be devastated if we go down.

What a depressing thought.

Although last time we dropped into division 4, we got a new decent manager and coach who got the team fit as fuck and winning.

We're big fish in division 4 too  :naughty:

In terms of transfers and attendances we're pretty big in league one.

Hmmm maybe. Southampton, Huddersfield, Charlton, Wendies and maybe Plymouth are bigger clubs though I'd say.

Plymouth?

Their crowds are down this year but i'd say they're a bigger club, maybe similar.

Its a strange situation with Plymouth a few years ago they were averaging 17/18,000 at home when they were midtable in the Championship and now they're averaging about 7/8,000.

Title: Re: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 09:26:47
Plymouth hit a patch where they started to punch well above their weight and got ideas ahead of their station (incl nicking a manager from us and the hilarious bid to host World Cup games).  Now they're returning to their natural level...which, for what it's worth, is more or less our level.  Certainly would not bracket them as being a bigger club than we are in terms of support/potential etc.

Title: Re: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: london_red on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 09:48:02
Indeed see them as very similiar in size/stature to us. Checked and in fact they're just a few places away from us in the "all time" table

http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table (http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table)

One other thing i noticed on there - over 3700 matches and our goal difference is just +17. Decidedly average.

last time in league 2 was quite enjoyable.at least we battered teams and had a super fit team at the rght end of the table.even ifil looked a class act.
obviously if we were not to challenge for honours it would be tedious,as the quality of football in that division is poor.
finally playing oxford again would be fun though

Title: Re: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 12:59:19
Agree Arriba. The problem with relagation is that it isn't always like last time. We can play the big fish in a small pond, but its quite easy to get beached in that pond for far too long.

I'm sure Rovers, O*ford and Bradford fans thought they'd come straight back up too.

In short relagation could be a disaster and one I'm not cotemplating 'til the fat lady sings.

Say what you like about Dennis Wise and Gus but that team was the fittest Swindon team for a long time.

Not just that, but organised too. Every player knew their role, I remember hearing an interview with one of them that said that before a sub came on they asked them what their roe was and how they were to go about it. Also impressed with how they handled Christian Roberts both while at the club and with the Chelsea leg-ends match.

My only gripe was the way they left. Everyone has a different opinion on that and I appreciate the working conditions were dire!

I still enjoyed last seasons failure far more than our division 4 promotion though.

I don't think that if we get relegated that hardly any of the team would stay with us, Douglas, Dossevi, Ritchie, Cuthbert, Sheehan, Ferry, Caddis, Lucas IMO would all leave, not to mention having the Wage Cap in place in the bottom division (Mandatory wage cap in L2 that limits spending on players' wages to 60% of club turnover) which we fell foul of last time and somehow Notts County managed to avoid last season.

Relegation would be very disturbing, even though it is a a reality because we are deep in the shit, but a few wins and we can easily escape it.

They gave Robbo some responsibility by making him vice captain. In Robbo's book, he praises both Wisey and Gus for helping him through a hard time.

Batch means they sorted the Chelsea legends match for us.

just to elaborate....
i know as it's our ground the county ground is special, but if we take the rose tinted glasses off then it's not all that is it?
the drs is very similar to alot of modern stands that aint the bowl type(flat pack concrete).the arkells is an older shit version with 2 fucking poles in the way to piss us off.
the townend is like a shed, and the less said about the stratton bank the better.
so yeah the kassam(cough) is better then the county ground.3 sides or not.
our 4th stand is the stratton bank for fucks sake.hardly ever used

The stands at the Kassam are literally about 20 metres from the pitch!?

You like Colchesters ground anyway.

Location, location, location, as they say in the property market.

The Town End might be small, but it does have more character than the whole of the Kassam put together and multiplied 85 times. Most Pox fans would go back to the Manor given half a chance, probably the shittest ground in the Football League in the 2000's. That should tell you all you need to know.

I think standing to watch football will always create more excitment than sitting down.

The question of 'better' is not just a question of concrete and plastic. Its about the experience of the fans at that ground.

Besides, as Ive said at least 4 times in this thread already, the pitch is far far too far away from the stands at the Kassam. Its a rediculous half finnished relic.

just to elaborate....
i know as it's our ground the county ground is special, but if we take the rose tinted glasses off then it's not all that is it?
the drs is very similar to alot of modern stands that aint the bowl type(flat pack concrete).the arkells is an older shit version with 2 fucking poles in the way to piss us off.
the townend is like a shed, and the less said about the stratton bank the better.
so yeah the kassam(cough) is better then the county ground.3 sides or not.
our 4th stand is the stratton bank for fucks sake.hardly ever used
The CG is not great. But at least it's full of history, tradition and memories. The Kassam's got nothing going for it whatsoever.

it has a lot history unlike that 3 sided shithole, but you are right in that since all seating etc it has all gone, but the same can be said for a lot of grounds, anfeild used to be awsome before it was seated

When I went to the Kassam I found it to be a soulless shell of a stadium whose only redeeming feature was its fence.

I like shit old stadiums more than identikit new sterile stadia. I love big fuck off floodlights. I love shitty old stands and terraces. Give me a wanky old dell over a Saint Mary's any day. In every respect inferior to its modern counterpart, but with about a million times more character.

I know the financial aspects have to trump all thee things in the end. But I like our crappy ground.

I maintain that the way grounds are built at the moment is the way that Board members and executives want grounds built. One day someone will build a ground the way and in a place the fans want a ground built. That day that ground will blow all the other grounds that have been built since the mid 1990's out of the water.

In Germany they listen. Their new grounds are far superior to ours.

The West Ham thing at the moment is completely laughable. Do they actually think they will increase their attendances going to a running track stadium!?!?

No but Gold and Sullivan will trousers many millions of pounds...so what do they care.

If fans want stands etc of a certain type, then they should pay for them as happened with the TE.

The most famous ground in the world had a dog track around it for years...Wembley.....The Shed End fans at Stamford Bridge more than compensated the fact the there was a massive distance to the pitch.

Its the fans who have changed.....many grounds used to have tracks round them....Hull had a speedway track as well i think......the vocal support generally is not the same...of course grounds like ours and QPR are great for watching along with lots of others but just because there is a running track round the ground should not detract from a good atmosphere.

There were a few cricket and football grounds together....Northampton, Bramall Lane, Sheff U and Feethams, Darlo spring to mind.....our CG is possibly the last one, and another reason why it's ace, and should be treasured.

Somerton Park Newport, used to have a speedway/dog track around it....I liked going there. There is an outside chance of them coming up to L2 this year....I've been to there new ground, which is in fact a Withdean style athletics stadium, and marginally less shit.

Its just down the road from Blackpool and yes you can get good fish and chips but its a rough old place with some right rough old boys. I'd imagine its the kind of place you would need to be respectful and not take liberties. They're also doing a fair amount uf work around the town which meant that roadsigns were meaningless.
Now nearby Southport on the other hand would be a really good day out if they could make it back into the league. Much more genteel and laidback and considerably rmore affluent.

I'm thinking of 95/96 promotion winning season. Corker of a game but on the losing side:

30 SEP  Wrexham (Away) 3 - 4 Allison 2, Thorne      Att. 4,296

Went to both those Wrexham games because I was living in Shrewsbury and I agree, they weren't very welcoming.

Ok, so well done, you can count to three. But how the fuck can you say the pitch is miles from the stand? Maybe it seemed that way to you on your last, and only, visit when you left empty handed. Toss pot. The pitch is as close to the stands as at your absolute shit hole of a dump.
A local derby against your REAL local rivals is what we all want. But preferably in Lge 1, for all concerened. We've had to make do with Cheltenham, Wycombe and even some people think of Cambridge as our rivals. (not us) If you do go down, - and lets face it, its looking likely now, I can see you slipping out of the league altogether. Whatever you do, get rid of whatever is causing your current form, because you really do not want to drop down to Lge 2. I don't want to see you go through that, contrary to what most yellows fans may say, we need us both back in lge 1, Championship again. We've missed eachother. And you know it. :bye:

The older I get, the less real 'hatred' I feel to be honest. I used to despise you lot, but things aren't the same without a genuine rivalry. Its been sorely missed for 10 years I know plenty of Town fans (Tans, and Ralphy to name two) but we have decent banter, plenty of piss taking, but its nothing more. It'll all get hyped up before the games, keyboard warriors coming on giving it plenty, but Jesus lads, its a game of football. Theres so many Police at our games at the moment there would be no trouble at the ground. By the way, we'd stuff you right now, I'd bet my house on it. (on the pitch I mean  ;) )

What's your unofficial name for the ground? I've never been. I enjoyed days out at the manor ground. I can't remember the result of the last town game I saw there though.
I did see Oxford v Liverpool in the first division back in the 80's. I seem to recall the scousers won 3-1. Maybe awhile after Aldridge moved, seem to remember judas chants.

No unofficial name. Some call it the United Stadium, some say its the New Manor.

I can't recall us ever chanting Judas at Aldo. I certainly never did. He's the best player ever to pull on our shirt. We generally lost to Liverpool, think we drew once at home though, Ray Kennedy scored an own goal past Grobbelaar  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

I've found a 1-3 result from March 87. Did Aldridge move in the January of 87?

It all fits.  I think y'all did chant judas.

Chump!? Why am I a wind up? Or an alias? I'm an Oxford fan. I saw Alan Mayes play for you in the league cup back in the early 80's. Did you see him play? Probably still a twinkle in the milkman's eye at the time?

:bye:

Stands are about 20m from the playing area. Bad viewing and its too open, which means it gets very windy. Compare it to how tight something like the Den is (which was a design of the same era). Add to that the awful location. I think its rubbish.

I think you need us a lot more than we need you. STFC were doing fine for the 80 odd years before Oxford had a league team.

Id want to play the Pox if we were a league below, but that doesnt happen very often does it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not much of a fan of our (rented, just like you) current ground. But having been on the pitch I don't know where you get your 20 metres from. Remind me not to ask you to caddy for me if I ever make it as a golf pro.
Your recollection of history is pretty sketchy too, 80 years? Do me a favour you tit.
We need you? Hmmmm, you need a miracle just now, whilst we don't want the season to end. We'll give you a wave as we swap divisions. :bye:
By the way, my 8 year old has a message: You suck, and Oxford rule.

Chuck in the last 10 years and O*frod have been irrelevant for near on 100 years of our 132 year old history

I honestly dont think that Pox fans know that much about football. Thats not just my view, but the view of talking to fans of other 4th division clubs over the last 10 years.

But they do seem to have a lot of self confidence in their ignorance.

We could do with a bit of that at the moment. Although to be fair, when we went down to League 2 a few years ago, the fans did seem to be a lot more brash? Possibly because we had the best attendances in the league.

Have you ever looked around yourself at Swindon matches? A mate from work went to see Sheff Weds at your hole earlier in the season. He said he's never seen such a mass of in-bred looking retards at a football match.
We 'don't know that much about football' - yes, its your opinion but Jesus Christ where do you get that from? We've got our fair share of numb skulls and toss pots, but in case you hadn't noticed, Oxford has the most famous University in the world. What's Swindon got??? Not only do they not attend, a good chunk of them seem to spend most of their time seething in resentment at the stoodents, and trying to have a pop at them out of bitter jealousy. So, if anything, the University is our natural ally against the cesspit that is Headington Non-Academicals FC

You're right, I did Ralphy! Couldn't resist. Thanks for your endorsements so far, means a lot from a scummer.
Your fellow Town fans can call me a cunt, which is really hurtful, but at least we all support our home town clubs, or in your case a team near where we live. I'd far rather have a conversation with a Swindon fan any day than a Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal tosser. You know me, I'm not interested in aggro or having a go. Its only bloody football. I hate Swindon, yeah, but its just a rivalry.
What I take exception to is a knob head who claims Oxford fans know nothing about football. I'm obviously going to disagree with that. And I was pointing out that our City (unlike your town) is the home of Oxford Uni, so how can anyone claim we are all fuckwits? I admitted we've got plenty of twats and numb skulls at our games, and I often fall out with such idiots at games.

If you come from Saxton Road in Abingdon you might well support Oxford United, but you wouldnt be going to Oxford University. Same with Blackbird Leys, or the south side of Sutton Courtenay.

The people in Oxfordshire with a chance of going to Oxford University (or going to any university) usually dont like lower league football. To them I dont think OUFC have ever shrugged off its hooligan reputation from the 1980s. This is going to wind you right up, but they are a bit embaressed by Oxford United.

People involved with the university are not OUFC fans, and the fact OUFC fans cant seem to separate the 2, doesnt say a lot for your intelligence.

Title: Re: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: Ardiles on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, 21:05:23
The University argument is a complete red herring.  Oxford is split down the middle - 'town' and 'gown'.  You've got the University which, for historical reasons, occupies and owns pretty much the whole of the city centre.  And then there's the rest of town...the hinterland that Betjeman once disparagingly described as follows:

'East Oxford, where the works are, beyond Magdalen Bridge, is indistinguishable from Swindon, Neasden or Tooting Bec.'

Oxford townies grumble persistently about how the centre of town is over-run with 'bloody students'.  And most students, in turn, have very little reason to venture outside of the student enclave in the city centre.  There used to be sizeable student communities in certain residential areas, particularly off the Cowley Road, but in recent years the Colleges have got their act together and have built a vast quantity of student accommodation with the effect that few students now need to rent privately.  This has further increased the separation of the university from the town.  The two worlds barely meet, and just about tolerate each other at best.

So the presence of the University has very little bearing on the fuckwittedness of your average Oxford resident.

So the presence of the University has very little bearing on the fuckwittedness of your average Oxford resident.

So the lack of a University in Swindon, similarly, has very little bearing on the fuckwittedness of Swindonians.

99% of people are fuckwitted in my opinion.

That statement is the very essence of fuckwittery!

You have the uni in your town/city, therefore the population cannot be stupid?????? The stupidity of that post alone nullifies any claim the residents (particularly you) might have to intelligence because the uni is there. How many work there? How many study there? How many can even spell Oxford University.

What a fucking idiotic thing to say. Reminds me of a Jack Dee sketch about how every fucker you meet in a Hereford pub is ex-SAS and can kill you with a look.

L2 is starting to look a bit more norvern for next season than I'd like....

The Board need to have a bit of a think about how they're going to approach this manager wise, give the previous lengths of time it has taken to get a new boss, they should be working on it now.

We've ended up with the worst Div 3 side in my 50 years of support, and it's a side totally unsuited to Div 4.  It will need to be ripped apart and totally rebuilt. I'd probably only keep perhaps 5 players....Lucas, Benyon, Ritchie, LJF and Flint

Last time around with Wise and Poyet, they were able to bring in experienced pros like Adi Williams,
Jamie Vincent and Paul Evans.

I have my doubts that whoever is manager next season, would be allowed to go down that route.

This could very well be a problem, but it's a league for grinders, can't see Caddis or Ferry being suitable, Ritchie has played down there, with a bit of success. We might have to take on loss on those two.  Williams for a while was just the sort of thing you need.....even Jerel Ifil was suited to L2.

Which is why I didn't include him....Manky, is I suppose a possible, but he seems a bit too injury prone these days, I'd bin him.

A Barry Corr (without the injuries) style centre forward is a must.

Won't happen Spence. You're defo for the drop, and we'll go up. But if it does happen, and we meet, I'll treat you to a pint in the bar before the game and you can educate me on the beautiful game, oh wise master, as I'm such an ill-informed, ignorant pox fan.
Have I missed something by the way (probably have, because I know nothing about football) but how the hell is Danny Wilson still in the job? Can't you afford to sack him?

Ah well, keep it up, your recent form is really quite impressive.

I would like to see a much more positive approach from the fans rather than this defeatist claptrap that emanates from the manager all the way down to this supposed supporters site. I am looking forward to a great weekend in Scunthorpe and Sheffield, United that is!

Bradford City, could have really got in the brown stuff today when behind at home to Stockport, but they only had 9 men and so lost late on. Barnet had a win today, maybe Macclesfield might yet drop.

 Crawley looking good for auto...

Going the other...our reserves are starting to look a bit likely...we know Sturrock knows his trade.

Amazingly Plymuff now look likely to be off the foot of the table in the week, having more or less wiped out the 10 point penalty in a week....this means that Yeovil could get sucked in, although they're not in free fall.  Wouldn't mind Yeovil joining us.

Chesterfield look certain to for L1 next season, and Bury going well....Wycombe staying down would be good.

The Scum's PO push has faltered, just at the wrong time, but worryingly Torquay showing signs of life.

Now starting to worry a bit about Burton Albion...loads of games in hand, but they keep getting beat, Stockport and Barnet going has to be the best for us.  Edgely Park, Underhill or the Pirelli Stadium, come on you Brewers pull your fingers out.

The bottom 2 in Div 4 now looking terminal, Chesterfield are up, but then it starts to get interesting....unfortunately Port Vale have blown up, so look likely to be around for next season, but Torquay are into the PO slots...amazingly Accrington Stanley look like they could make it as well.  The hopes of losing large numbers of norvern monkeys, are starting to look a bit sick.

Last night, watched the first half of Chesterfield v Rotherham...interestingly Rotherham, who are there or thereabouts looked terrible....sadly Callum Kennedy did a passable Rose impression of being good with a dead ball, but a bit shit at the rest of it.

We're going to enter this league in a very sorry state....

I don't think we should be disrespecting any team in this league, we've ended up there for a reason....we're not very good at football.  The issue now is how we're going to stop the rot and start to rebuild...this will need some major decisions to be got right, in the way they haven't this season.

Barnet....could still do it, although hopefully not at the expense of the Cobblers, who are dropping like a stone under the management of Johnson, a man seen as a Messiah here by some.

Not just because we are the 'mighty' Swindon Town, no. That's exactly the attitude that the Forest/Leeds/Southampton/Wendies fans have had when we beat them (wow, yes, I vaguely remember when we used to do that to teams...any way I digress) and what I think most of us hate about those 'big' clubs. It's about 11 v 11 on the pitch and who wants it more. Nothing else is of any relevance whatsoever.

No, we should beat them because the budget put in place will be in the top handful in that division, so we should have one of the strongest squads.

I don't think we should challenge for the L2 title nest year because we're a big club for L2, I think we should challenge because we'll have one of the biggest budgets and followings. It's not arrogance, it's logic.

The table is rarely far from the ranking of budgets, which is why this season has been even worse than it seems.

If we work on the basis we're the 5th best supported team in this division, cashed in on Wembley and merchandise sales, 5600 season ticket holders then we've had one of the biggest budgets in this division and monumentally fucked up.  Hereford and Torquay both deducted points for fielding ineligible players, maybe thrown a bit of a spanner in the works for next seasons league.  Hereford 3 Torquay 1

If the FA's interpretation of ineligible stretched to not actually resembling a footballer, we'd be right in the shit.

Douglas contract ends at the end of the season however he has a clause in it to trigger another year should he want to which is very unlikely if we go down :-\

Rumour going around is that Ferry will be off at the end of the season but i don't know if that was club decision or player decision

Doesn't the contract state that if he played 25 games this season, the club automatically gives him another year regardless?? I think the only way he would leave would be if the club sell him. The players all have a relegation wage cut clause in their contract anyways. I would love it if he stayed.

Notts County, haven't got a mention on this Div 4 11/12 composition thread until now. If they are to join us and Plymuff, then hopefully it will be Walsall and D and R who benefit, with Wovers still to go.

Important win for Burton yesterday.....Burton away in early August  :pint:

I predict DV will moan all fucking season and spend the latter stages telling everyone how this (whatever it is) proves he was right when he said whatever it is he's going to say in July

DV wont be giving STFC a second thought next season.

Unless we appoint a seriously awe inspiring manager.

....and I will be right with what I say in July!

By the river it's quite nice. But the rest of the town is horrendous. Maybe that comes from living half hour down the road for most of my life, but I really don't see the appeal of the place. Like Warrington.

There's an outside chance we could be playing Fleetwood Town next season.
If that isn't a depressing thought, I don't know what is.
Although a weekend in Blackpool could be on the cards I suppose :)

I'm not thinking yet in terms of us doing anything next season...but teams coming up from the Conference are usually competitive.  Crawley will either piss the league or implode in a financial meltdown....AFC could be very strong if they make it.   They'll have the old advantages of Wimbledon, namely vast population in that corner of London, lots of competitive local football and not a lot of competition on the doorstep.

Of those joining us on the way down.... Plymuff hard to call, if they can stabilise, then they could be a force, or they could struggle if finances aren't sorted.

I mentioned it in the matchday thread about Plymouth. I was very impressed with them on Saturday and they were extremely unlucky to lose. If they can keep their current playing squad and sort out their finances there is no reason for them not to do very well next season.

I actually quite like Plymouth, there's a great article about them in the latest Four Four Two mag.
Peter Reid has put some of his own money in and also auctioned his FA Cup winners medal to help keep the club afloat, fair play to him.

Now come on Reg. Swindon being the first team to have touched the new modern Murdoch sponsored heights of the premier league and drop out of the league all together, I think you'd quite enjoy that in a quiz question masochistic madman sort of way.

So Hereford survive along with the Cheltnumb, Burton and the Cobblers....leaving it between Barnet and Lincoln.  Would prefer Lincoln to stay up.  3rd auto between Wycombe and Shrewsbury...Wycombe have to be favourites, but the Shrews have an easy home game.

Wovers booked in today, and Plymuff still just have an outside sniff, but will need to beat Soton. Losing Barnet and gaining D and R would seem a fair swap.

Conference PO's start next weekend so we should find out soon enough who out of Wrexham Wimbledon, Looton and Fleetwood we'll get. I'd like Wimbledon.

Congrats to Dave Hockaday for keeping up FGR for another season...who despite getting a shocking defeat at Tamworth keeping them up, survived on GD because PaulD's Haig Avenue mob lost.

Why are you pretending to be a Town fan?

Wouldn't you ?

Believe me this is going to be a much awaited game. Have to say though the hatred of us by the Pox in my opinion is greater than our hatred of them.
We seem to be mixed up with City and Rovers. About time we sorted this out.

There is only one rival - Pox (They are just loving it in Oxfordshire).

Just beating them home or away nothing compares. They never bring a big crowd to Swindon except for the smoke bomb game. (Roy Burton's eyes have never been the same since).

Forever in our shadow just the way I like it..........Since watching Swindon since 1975 never seen us get beat at the CG. however seen plently of wins at their place.

Sadly both games are going to be early kick off's with the old bill from Oxford and Swindon in numbers.
The only real plus getting relegated to Div 2......and crap football.

The Banter has already started and this season has yet to finish. For any younger Town fan or even Pox fans yet to sample this derby it is the only one that matters. COYR's

Be very suprised if Oxford are given the Arkells and the bank- as it is likely that the Arkells would go all to home fans for this fixture- which would leave the scum on the bank only.

Giving the away side 3500 or 25% of the capacity in this fixture would be stupid.

Title: Re: L2 next season....who do you want?
Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, 21:41:55
It's hard to predict numbers but I reckon we could give that max a go, I know we've not traveled well to Wiltshire in the past but our away numbers over the last few seasons are very good. The only thing that might put the masses off is the fear of getting caught up in unwanted trouble, but even with a few fannies staying at home we'd bring a load.

At the VERY LEAST I'd say we would bring 2,000, with the potential for 3,500. I'm not a season ticket holder so a bit concerned that I might not get a ticket for the away match.

There's talk of a temporary stand for the match here but I think it'd be a logistical and construction nightmare so its a no-go at boardroom level.

Good news, we can do without a trip to The Racecourse next season.

So with Wimbledon seemingly on their way, we could go and get Mickey Mellon.

Final....should be a remake of the 88 FA Cup semi final...notable for a crowd of 25,963.

Ticks all the boxes for me...young but with a bit of experience, should be looking to take a step up, having been successful with an unfashionable club, and the clincher is Sweatie from the Greater Glasgow area.  I'm sure we all know that as things stand there will be 7 such, managing in the Prem next season...8 if Billy Davies makes it.

No STFC connection...so will come in with a blank sheet.

I lived with Fred Ford and Danny Wilson...Mellon only played a relatively few games for them, saw the error of his ways and moved on.

Have to say, I'm warming to the idea. On a sensible note for all the reasons Reg listed. On a less sensible side because:

1) It'd send the Adver forums into a frenzied meltdown if we took a manager from non-League instead of Ancelotti/Hullitt/Keegan/whoever their favoured wildly unrealistic candidate is

2) Micky Mellon - got to be a porn name, surely?

Personally this is better journalism than having to write about a bunch of jokers that try to rig the players award. Some felt it was funny of course I felt it was demeaning to the club, player and all the loyal fans that took this annual award seriously. So good to move on to harmless speculation. This site has dropped in standards and allows abuse of pretty much anything stfc. how can someone for example that continually attacks on this site everything stfc call themselves a supporter. If they don't support the chairman, the manager, the players, others supporters then they may as well be an Oxford supporter. They should look up the word one day.

True, but not really a factor,  because last time we had no money yet still spent a lot, whereas this time we have some money, but probably wont spend wildly. This means we'll still be limited to the type of player, who'll play in Div 4, because to entice a better class of player would mean paying over them over the odds which wont happen.

For di Canio to fashion a side out of what he's left with and some new recruits that can be in the promotion shake up would be a significant achievement.

I should've learnt by now, been let down so many times, but I've got a positive vibe about next season.
Anything less than Champions by March will be disappointing. Average goals scored per game= 5.
Average goals conceded= 0.333. Points total= 130.

Am I really asking too much?

You prove my point though....if you consider Prutton and Douglas a better class, then that's why they've fucked off or will fuck off pronto.

It will be difficult for di Canio to get players of quality....not saying impossible just difficult.

As a newbie to the management game...it would have been good for him to come into a settled outfit with a number of decent players available....unfortunately he comes into a train wreck of a side, with only a handful of players possibly up to the job.

Realistically his first job should be to see if we can get a side that can win a few home games, maybe 1 in 2 rather than going club record times of non winning runs.
