Title: Oldham vs Swindon - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, January 8, 2011, 07:54:58
They have only lost once at home all season...but that was last Monday to another team also on 28 points.

Can we sustain our heroic form at The Valley?  Here's hoping.

PS  Forgot to mention - I'm feeling a little superstitious this morning.  So let's have another 9 pages of vitrioic abuse in Wilson's direction please at the start of this thread.  Should ensure another fine away performance.

3-0 Town..Austin, Ritchie, Rose

Having broken the 'not coming from behind to win since when was the last time Dave?' hoodoo in the last game, we will break the 'no clean sheets since I don't know when' hoodoo today.

I'm going to avoid listening to it or having any idea of the score until it's over. It worked at The Valley, it will work at Boundary Park.

My memories of Oldham - big car park. Groun sold beefy flavoured drinks (not Bovril or Oxo). Hope this information helps you out.

Wilson is going to FUCK this UP. The guy is clearly a one season wonder type manager who has no plan b, he's been FOUND OUT at this level and teams now all know how to play us. All of them.

We should be in the CHAMPIONSHIP at least. Why does wilson persist with certain players etc

I think we should hire a moaning cybertwat in the mould of a glos robin or a flammable ben as our next manager. proven track record of being right after the event is just what we need

Prediction:
Wilson will keep the same team as at Charlton, which is the queue for a stream of abuse from many on the TEF.
Or
Wilson changes the team from Charlton, queue a stream of abuse from many on the TEF.

As for the game, how anyone can guess what our team is likely to produce is beyond me. So any prediction appears to be total guesswork, therefore I will go for a 0-0 bore draw

I dont know what team is best to play.

I dont know if Wilson is a good manager or not.

I dont know if Charlie is going to southampton / reading / newcastle / brimingham / barcelona

A win would be nice though.

So what do we want to talk about today?

I wonder what stunning backdrop the Swindon U-5's photographed themselves in front of today...

A bus top? A mosque? A KFC?

Same, the Swindon commentary is choppy as fuck. I think Caddis has really improved defensively in the past few games, probably quicker than I'd thought he would. Starting to see why we signed him.

Not listening very hard, he was mentioned a fair bit in the first five minutes. Sounds like the games gone a bit quiet really...O'Brien just mentioned again putting in a decent cross...anyone would think you were looking for a reason to moan.

We'll take Oldham in the second hand. Hopefully Wilson has told the players to SHOOT!

Ben Amos is a crap goalie. He was in Molde in the Norwegian Premier League on loan last season and made a fool of himself the few games he got before he was benched and sent back to United...

Fucking hell, at least give it a fucking go town.

Not even sounding likley.

Back to our best then.  Unsurpringly it appears that Monday was a fluke and as per every time this season we've put in a good performance, we've followed it up with a pathetic one.

I would also question Ball being brought on given that it's been stated that his loan isn't being extended as he's clearly not good enough.

Typical  - Rose free kick hits the post!

What a load of rubbish!

Looking forward to next week.

1) Danny Wilson sacked, Fitton hires a Football Director and seek professional guidance before hiring a new manager, Peter Shirtliff also leaves and Paul Bodin will be caretaker for the coming weeks. Swindon offers a contract to Burton Albions Paul Peschisolido, Roy Keane or Micky Hazard - turning up at CG with his cab!

2) Fitton gives Wilson the vote of confidence. Wilson says he's going to need a couple of new experienced players before next weekend. Come saturday we haven't signed any. We play another crap game vs. Yeovil and loose at home.

And so it bloody should.  Had we not put in a performance like that at Charlton, he would probably have joined the list of managerial casualties come Monday morning.

Monday was a classic example of a fluke result when the pressure is on the team and the manager coupled with being on tv.  I said I'd reserve judgement until after the next couple of games and would happily retract my 'Wilson Out' thoughts/comments if necessary.  Clearly that won't be necessary!

Frampton now injured, so do I assume we will be trying to get another experienced centre back in?  Probably not, we'll revert to the tried and failed partnership of Morrison and Cuthbert.  If Austin is suspended, I would also suggest it's prudent to move for a forward in the next week.  However, I'm not the manager  :)

I don't disagree, just that things are easier to say in hindsight. Dossevi has played for Togo and Ball came highly rated and also very few thought Paynter was the player he actually was, even when he left.

Yep, my exact thoughts. I just think it's gone stale for Wilson here. We've either got to back him with more money which is a risk, sack him now, or start thinking about who to get in before the summer kicks in.

Dossevi came here having only scored 9 goals since 2007, an average of 3 a season - Wilson must have known he wouldn't have scored even half the amount of goals that Paynter did last season.

I think the problem is, other than the departure of Greer and Paynter, there is little difference from last year's squad.  Indeed, we've now got a bigger squad, but we seem to have a lot more fringe, back-up players.  In fairness to Wilson, the money wasn't there to buy a big name striker, and - sorry to mention him again - but Sam Parkin didn't set the world alight before coming to STFC.

We were extremely fortunate last season to get Ward on loan, and we probably overachieved due to a very clinical strikeforce.  We nicked a lot of games just because of Paynter and Austin's strike conversion rate.  Losing at Oldham is not slit-your-wrist time - the important games are the next two coming up.

I for one cannot understand the Wilson bashing.  We had an excellent season last year, and yes we've struggled, but we're about to undergo major changes.  Austin is likely to leave in the summer, but with a hefty transfer fee we should be able to give the squad a big overhaul.  I'd like to see him given until at least the summer (assuming we're not in the bottom four) and then reassess the situation then.  Now is not the time for chopping and changing a manager - what does it matter if we finish 7th or 20th?

But we've scored 2 more goals this season than at the same stage last season, which suggests offensively we've done OK.

Are you insane? Possibly the strangest thing I've seen posted on TEF, and that's saying something.

I'm pretty sure, when you consider our budget, performance last year (which for the umpteenth time wasn't an over achievement, it was expected by the board) and the targets set by Fitton at the beginning of the season, that in the Chairman's eyes, and the minds of the right-minded fan, there is a huge difference between just missing out on a PO spot and surviving by the skin of our teeth.

And that's before you consider prize money, selling the club to prospective summer signings, crowds, next year's ST sales etc etc etc.

Not all of us, someone us stuck up for Paynter from the start and could see he was a very good player.

Wilson tried to replace him, we've signed strikers - it hasnt worked. I would have liked to have seen us bring someone else in when it was clear it hadnt worked.

We at least tried to replace Paynter (who most thought would be easy to replace) unlike that other dude.

Last time, we didnt over achieve last season - we achieved.

Under Malpas we were 18th in L1 and out all the cups by late December. Now we're in January under Wilson we are 18th in L1 and out all the cups. Yet failure seems more tolerated under Wilson than Malpas?

Indeed, dont forget it - its the level of expectation the board, manager and plays have set themselves.

hope to better it and plans ways of doing so - is what this season should of been but it hasnt, this season has been a flat out failure.

Right now, we either back Wilson with cash in hope he can better last season next season or sack him now and give the new gaffer a chance to shape the squad to his liking.

This season has been totally unacceptable, I can't see Wilson lasting much longer especially if we fail to win next week but i have no doubt that he won't be here next season, How could Fitton possibly keep him on? He's failed his objectives just like Malpas did and he got the boot and Wilson will too.

There is no-one else to blame, Today's comments on the radio by Morrison summed it up for me "There was no desire" Why wasn't there any desire? That's down to Wilson and his motivational skills or lack of.

We can't put 2 wins together and it's getting beyond a joke now.

I personally quite enjoyed the season up until 3 seconds into the play off final.

Charlton was quality night and obviously past march.

Not all of us, someone us stuck up for Paynter from the start and could see he was a very good player.

Was he though? I'd see he was an average league 1 striker for 2 seasons*, and a very good player for the best part of 1.

The fact that the two strikers brought in aren't living up to Paynters last seasons isn't that surprising.

I think Wilson spotted this and tried to spread the goals round the team. Rose the free kick specialist. Prutton. Caddis as an attacking full back.

Problem is that perhaps due to this the team is leakier than a sieve. Even against Charlton where we totally dominated we conceded 2, 1 was fortunate and the other a near carbon copy of Bournemouth's winner. Another 4 shipped in 2 games :(

Just my opinion like.

Got back a while ago (I live in Manchester) and can;t believe what I witnessed today. Oldham were crap, absolute dogshit and so were we. That was a huge 3 points dropped today. If we can't beat teams like Oldham when they are there for the taking... then forget it. We showed no desire to play at all.

Smith had nothing to do - except pick the ball out twice and Alan O' Brien should of been taken round the back and shot after about 5 minutes  :suicide:. Rose had a shocker and nearly redeemed himself with his free kick. Austin was completely isolated with no support.

I know many said that DW had to "keep a winning side" but if Dougie played from the start, we would of been writing about a win as Oldham were poor and it would of suited JD completely with his style of play. One shot (I think) on goal in 90 minutes is terrible for a team that have aspirations of play-offs.

Don't get me wrong there were positives with Prutton running his socks off, Caddis played well and was a shame Frampton went off when he did as we seemed to of lost the impetus after he was subbed.

Rant over. Any chance of a refund? :hmmm: :hmmm:

""The top teams are getting consistent results even when they aren't playing well. We have to offer more going forward, but we weren't able to make any more changes after the hour as we had used all three substitutes - but that happens in football." (Danny Wilson, 7/1-11)

Dave's post is completely spot on.

The next couple of weeks are going to be fairly defining in where we go from here in terms of results, transfers in and out and who's in charge.  The board has some decisions to make on all of these counts.

Because Malpas was a clueless twat who nobody liked?

I still say Danny Wilson is one of the best managers outside of the top flight. I'm sticking by him.

I still say Danny Wilson is one of the best managers outside of the top flight.

Why do you say that Ralphy? Would you honestly prefer Wilson to most of the managers in the Championship?

Dave Jones, Sean O'Driscoll, Kenny Jackett, Simon Grayson, Billy Davies, Nigel Clough, Malky Mackay, Paul Lambert, Mark Robins, Brian McDermott, Neil Warnock, Aidy Boothroyd, Steve Cotterill, Nigel Pearson, Brendan Rodgers, Keith Millen, Ian Baraclough, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Tony Mowbray, Stuart Gray, Micky Adams, Dougie Freedman, Phil Brown

There's a few in there I'd take over him if we had that sort of pulling power as a club. But if it was Wilson, or someone out of a job or currently at a lower league side (the more realistic situation) I think we're better where we are.

I have'nt trawled back through......so here goes...

Well i went and it was freezing....2 degrees pre kick off....i left Calne at 9!

Oldham are like us....mediocre...

Piss poor first goal....NEVER...let a defender turn you and then stand off.  I thought that Smith thought that it was going wide...it was'nt.

We got into them at times without looking like we would score.

Austin was woeful today and the whole side looked off the pace.

Rose was the worst today and even his kick hit the bar poor sod. His support for O'Brien was crap and played it consatntly too long, too short or hospital.

Prutton was my MOM..(it hurts)...and did very little wrong without setting up anything solid.

Oldham were there for the taking today and even playing as bad as we did we deserved at least a point.

Shit ground and shit Meat and Potato pies.

These two teams will probably finish where they are right now.......i would settle for that at this point in time.

Saw something on tv on friday about this, football league weekend iirc.

Watford have a school nearby to their academy so the boys get to train twice a day during school hours when they're not knackered after a day at school. Great idea and Watford are now reaping the benefits with 3 or 4 young lads coming through to their first team.

According to my mate who's an Oldham fan, Southampton last night were the best team he's seen at Boundary Park since Wigan were there in 2003. If you look at their squad there's al lot of quality there, Championship experience and future England internationals and they should get promoted this season.
