But friday is a bigger game and I think some players might have one eye on that one.

However much they'd say otherwise, a televised cup game is always going to be a slight distraction to the players.

Tonight isn't an obvious season changer, partly because of Fridays game. It's an important 3 points to pick up though.

Can guarantee that DW sees this match as more important,,as i do.....Championship football will be worth millions to the club...a good cup run while highly desirable isn't.
Still a long season Spencer....and the play offs are well in our grasp.

Both games are important: Cup game win = Money from a potentially good third round draw; a win tonight = 3 valuable points.

Both are competitive games and should be treated with equal importance, they are to me!

Cant see it. We might flirt with the Play offs for a while, but I think we will fall short.

And thats assuming Austin isnt sold in january.

Nothing looks like changing in terms of stopping the goals at the back. We are fighting an uphill battle every game.

No, but there's one playing right back...

Indeed- Sheehan and Caddis on the bench are the defensive options, no Will Evans. Another free kick to County, Davies is sounding like a threat from these...

Smith puts it behind

Very true. He turned this club around on the pitch and took us to Wembley, and has brought in plenty of decent players who should have us in mid-table at least. We're not doing well enough and he has to take the blame. But at the same time, I'm not sure there's anybody out there who would do a better job...

I'm sure that every team that have a losing streak must look forward to playing against us, because we just don't seem capable of beating a struggling team.

Really pissed off with our inability to beat poor sides.

8 points off the play offs. Mountain to climb now.

1 win in 8 in the league. That's very poor form  :(

I feel sorry for all those that have treked up to Notthingham on a cold Tuesday night to see us blow it yet again.

Only Notts County's second win in eight.  Says it all really.  Completely fucked off with it all.  Friday will be a real struggle and Mr Wilson could well be gone by Saturday morning!

Very true. He turned this club around on the pitch and took us to Wembley, and has brought in plenty of decent players who should have us in mid-table at least. We're not doing well enough and he has to take the blame. But at the same time, I'm not sure there's anybody out there who would do a better job...

If you're just keeping hold of a manager because there's nobody else out their then it's fucking over already.

Sort it out Wilson before we're made a laughing stock on Friday.

Stayed optimist and positive all season, but drawing to Rochdale when they lost 6 in 7, and now bleeding Notts County's 2nd win in 8, whats going on! have the players, need a formula, but got a feeling Wilson doesnt have the formula, think this may be a season of change, then a rebuild in the summer, only a few players off a promotion team: a FIT experienced CB, look at Norwich, they have MIchael Nelson, Zak Whitbread, Jens berthal Askou not playing for them, any of those 3 will do, need to sort it out fast, with or without wilson

All too predictable. As a side we have no great presence on the pitch and are too easy to rollover. We knew this last season when playing the physical sides and it's just not been addressed. We may well have some championship standard players, but we're in league one and need stronger 100% committed players who'll fight for every point.

Although the commentator is not wanting to directly criticise Danny Wilson, he's talking quite a lot of sense.

We may only still be 8 points from the play offs, but we're nearer to relegation and the gap to the top is widening after each game.

If you include the back end of last season, we're nothing short of relegation material.  Hardly surprising people are pissed off and saying it's time for Wilson to go.  It's not working out there and he unfortunately doesn't seem able to change things.

Failing to replace Greer and Paynter properly keeps being levelled at Fitton, but the fact is there was money to spend and it went on Caddis and Ferry when Prutton had already signed, as well as a whole raft of left backs. Full backs do not make teams.

Wilson on the radio.

On the goal- fell asleep, poor goal to concede. Know what Hughes can do, not a surprise.

Result- did enough to earn a point, 0-0 would have been "a great clean sheet"

On clean sheets- said it's a concern since start of season, need stability at the back, need to stop turning off.

Playoff ambitions/League position- looking over our shoulder all season, doesn't know why people think we will automatically been up there. No divine right, have to work hard, get an organised team. No use moaning about it. Most of the season we have player very well

Defensive errors- not much I can do. Manager can't do anything. Have to persevere and back our players, hope and pray for improvement.

On Douglas- groin injury, not sure how bad it is. Will take a look in the morning, hope he'll be able to play v Crawley but too early to tell

Danny Wilson (sounding very agitated)...

 - We think we've done the hard work and fell asleep
 - It's a poor goal to concede
 - We did enough to deserve a point but lost concentration
 - You have to have stability at the back and we don't have it
 - We have no divine right to do well this season, we have to work hard and be organised
 - This season we've given "miles too many" goals away because of bad decision making
 - If we're going to persevere with these defenders we have to keep backing them and hope they can rise to the occasion
 - We need to be more resilient as a team
 - The bottom line is you have to get results away from home
 - Dougie has a groin injury, too early to know if he'll miss Friday
 - We've got to be professional on Friday to make sure we don't lose

The interviewer didn't push him anywhere near hard enough on how he expects to turn this round.

Have to say I thought the same. As for those predicting the play-offs, I am far from a pessimist, but realistically I think if I was offered 12th place right now I'd take it, as this season could get so much worse if we keep failing to win against sides in the bottom half.

Unless his budget limit has been reached. No idea, just guessing.

Fair enough but in the summer, when we signed 2 very good CMs in Ferry and Prutton, both on big wages, and one of them after Greer had left, why did he not think about using the money to fill the gap we could all see was there.

Take tonight's hosts for example. They have both Liam Chilvers and Sam Sodje in the ranks, both signed this summer. Hardly world beaters, but Chilvers in particular would be more than a solid CB at this level, having played nearly 100 times for PNE over the last 3 or four season.

Very much doubt they're going to be out of our budget.

I don't disagree. We now have last years reserve centre backs playing in the spine of our defence. He either wrongly thought they were up to it or...well I don't believe it...but maybe he was forced to play them. no I don't think Fitton is that kind of guy. Danny just got it wrong.

Frampton was the attempt to put it right. Can't do much about it not working out I suppose.

Me.

I don't think we are as far from being a half decent side as we think. My thinking is clear out some 'surpless' and get in some quality in defenders.

I realise that next years squad will lose some first teamers from this year. I still think he can replace them (replacing Charlie will be a big ask mind).

Sorry Batch I couldn't remember who had said it and couldn't be bothered to trawl back through the posts!

I agree with what you've said above, but we come back to the age old question of why hasn't it been sorted this season.  Wilson clearly stated in the interview after the game that the defence has been a problem since the beginning of the season!

On a side note, my dad had a conversation with Kevin Amankwaah in the gym today and asked him about his fitness.  Manks told him that he's now fully fit, but is not being picked?

Just got home after the game and I have to say we were very disappointing. Against a team that was clearly lacking in confidence and ability we should have imposed ourselves much more and offered more of a threat.  The first ten minutes we were under pressure with Notts County having more play in & around the Town penalty area.  For the remainder of the first half we were at least their equal and in the closing minutes of the first half were the dominant force with Notts just pleased to keep us out.

But oh, the second half - what happened?  We were happy to knock the ball around but seemed disinclined to concentrate & attack.  The arrival of Lee Hughes was always going to be a key factor & so it proved.  He was a more active & threatening presence & he took the chance well.  Morrison should have stayed closer to him to prevent him making space for the shot & Phil Smith should have anticipated where the ball was going to be played. It seemed as if the team had settled for a point that perhaps they merited.

Difficult to select a man of the match - no-one was woeful but neither was anyone outstanding.  Prutton probably shaded it but we offered little and came away with nothing. A big improvement is needed if we are to beat Crawley Town on Friday & to compound my misery I've just heard Oxford won!  What a horrible evening!

Interesting...If he is 100% fit he should be in contention for right back with Sheehan/Rose.

As for why the defence hasn't been sorted, who knows. Have you asked Dave why we didn't replace Greer :)

Good on you for going.....deserve better.

if like for like replacements had been made, and improving a bit in areas we may have started better this season and carried on where we left it last year.that is what should have happend and was not unreasonable to expect that either.
not doing that has us where we are.wilson has tinkered with the side loads, both with formations and personel.that has not helped at all.

we wont go down, but we wont be anywhere near the play offs either

Totally agree. Except we did carry on where we left off last season. We were shit in the last month (Charlton aside).

I think Wilson needs to start getting some consistency in his selections and the formation he adopts. Too often he seems to want to accommodate players in the team especially midfield and defence (and his summer signings) rather than stick to a formation and structure. Cuthbert has been retained in the team at right back when we have a right back in Caddis who we paid money for. We need a decision on the centre back pairing (or get an experienced centre back in), right back and get some balance and width to the midfield. We desperately need a consistent scoring partner for Charlie.

Personally I think we will pick up results soon and that we may go on a run in the New Year. At the start of the season I thought we finish about 8th with a late charge but fall short.

Danny Wilson (sounding very agitated)...

 - We did enough to deserve a point but lost concentration
 - You have to have stability at the back and we don't have it
 - This season we've given "miles too many" goals away because of bad decision making
 - If we're going to persevere with these defenders we have to keep backing them and hope they can rise to the occasion
 - We need to be more resilient as a team

These are all the things that Wilson as manager should be addressing, yet he doesn't seem to have a clue and possibly doesn't even think he can do something about it. Our defenders aren't shit, they've all put in near perfect performances at some point this season so we know they are capable of playing well. So why aren't they playing well each week?

I don't want to see Wilson go as he's done a lot of good, especially some (most) of the players he's signed. But the results just aren't good enough and if he doesn't turn it around soon I can see Fitton losing patience in the near future. A loss to Crawley and still being near (or in) the drop zone come the end of the year might see him gone.

I think that's twice now Wilson has dropped a very big hint in post-match interviews that he's being pressured into playing youngsters at the back. Why else would he trot out the (paraphrased) line about 'If we are going to persist with the policy of playing youngsters at the back, they are going to make mistakes'?

Surpised no one else has picked up on it tbh.

Also, Wilson rightly identified Frampton as a possible short/long term solution to our leaky defence. After he got injured in his first game for us, why the fuck has Wilson not brought someone else in? The problem at the back hasn't suddenly gone away, FFS!

I cant make up my mind whether Wilson is risking his job by gambling on the likes of Morrison coming good, or is maybe being pressured by Fitton into playing younger players who can be moved on for a profit in January, with little regard to results.

Results and form aside, looking at the side he assembled last season, he clearly knows what he's doing. He brought players in rapidly when he identified problem areas and very rarely left himself vulnerable to criticism.

This season, so far, has been the complete opposite.

I dont think Wilson has turned into a complete cunt over the summer. Maybe something else has changed that we dont know about, yet?

We have for to stop panicking.  We have a talented if a little unbalanced side.  We do NOT need a major overhaul, just a few minor tweaks.  The wheels have not come off the apple cart, just a case of a young team finding it's way.  I think our run will start soon, probably against an ambitious Crawley Town on a Friday night at the County Ground.  I am happy we have some good teams coming up in the schedule, we always play to the level of our competitions we will be fine.  We have an issue with concentration, not talent and skill.  We should bring ina sports psychologist and do some visualization training.  I am off to the bookies to put some bread on our promotion odds.  BELIEVE!!!!!

I guarantee we won't lose or even concede a goal at the County Ground to Crawley on Friday.

Unfortunately we are playing them in Crawley, which is not so good.

Well, I have to say that was a massive disappointment, not happy  :badmood:  but trying hard not to be overly pessimistic.  Not surprised to hear that Wilson came out with the same old stuff, but we do need to stop hearing it and start keeping clean sheets.  To be honest the writing was on the wall when Hughes came on and the ...hmm... 'idiots' at the back spent quarter of an hour singing 'Lee Hughes is a murderer' when they should have been singing something positive to support the side.  If there was going to be a scorer (and that was looking less and less likely as the game went on) it was always going to be him that scored.

Here is a list of the things I can't stand after a wasted trip yesterday:
Paul Ince
multi-ball
diversions taking me 20 miles out of my way on the way back

I am looking at things through glass half empty at the mo, not many positives for me out of that rubbish.  But I do believe we have the players to do it, we need to find a consistent formation and the right picks and stop chopping and changing just to accommodate people.   I can't honestly see when we're going to go on 'that little run' and yes the season is becoming a ' dead 'un '

Probably Prutton motm for me yesterday, though not many had good games, didn't create anywhere near the chances we had Sat, County shaded it on the basis of more clear-cut shots at goal.

Cheer me up someone!

Morrison , sorry never rated him
Timlin - awful, overweight, I have his shirt from Charlton and it's big on me
Caddis, just for not being close enough to Hughes as the ball dropped onto his boot in the 88th minute

Don't think so. It certainly is very disappointing, the longer it stayed at 0-0 you had a feeling that there was only going to be one winner with a late goal. I'm getting a bit down hearted about my Sheff Wed trip now

I've been seeing a few people saying that we're one of the lesser sides and are a poor team, which proves true when you look at our position in the table.

We've had a very, very poor run of results of late which before that saw us most weeks lying in mid table. Whilst not getting results lately we've been on top in alot of games against the so called bigger teams. Charlton away we dominated, missed a penalty, only to lose 1-0 to a sucker punch at the death. We were looking like winning to Southampton after leading for 2/3 of the game only to get a player sent off, capitulate and lose 1-3.

Anyway i just wanted to point out that losing to us wasn't as bad as it looked on paper, although im sure it wont do much for your lots' spirits as it seems the problems go further than just last night.

Good luck for the rest of the season chaps.

Was Morrison as shit as he sounded on the radio?

Smith - Made some decent saves when one on one, kicks like a rubgy player - straight to touch. 5

Rose - Shit defensively, theres was always the other three in a line and then him out of position when defending. Corners were the worst ive ever seen. Always plays the same ball up the line, or runs across field = again out of position. 4

Cuthbert -Not a right back. 5

Morrison - Hahahahahahahahaahahahahaha.0

LJF - dodgy and class. Some shit decisions, some awful touches. Some fucking ace last ditch tackles saving morrisons backside. 5.5

Ritchie - What's the fuss about? None existant first half, bit more into it second half. But not amazing. 4

Timlin - Short fat, ran about without trioubling anybody. 3

Douglas - cant really remember noticing anything about him.

Prutton - don't like all the passing backwards but he won the ball well broke up play. did a lot of work ok. 5

Austin - Didn't look bothered. Got a knock and didn't recover. they always had two men on im for the throws and ball down the line, didn't really get much service.  didn't really win an awful lot, or win it and it came to something other than possesion for them.4

Dosevvi - runs runs runs looks at their player and lets him win the ball in the air. Trys hard but now i see why wilson chooses pericard - cause at least he tries to win the ball in the air. 4

Subs: JPM - 4
Caddis - 3
Ball - 4

All scores out of 100, it was that shit.

No wonder we lost though when out fans were chanting their players names for the enitre second half. Congratufucking lations.

Let's all do the hughesy.

Right, after 24 hours to ponder & consider last night's game I offer the following.
Firstly we were in contention for most of the first half (dominating the closing stages of the half) and contrary to what some have said I though Ritchie played OK seeming to be the main source of our attacking options. Austin was very tightly shackled with 2 sometimes 3 defenders in close proximity to him and at virtually every dead ball situation he was hustled & prevented from getting any contact.  Dossevi ran but offered little threat and was quickly neutralised.  I was not surprised when he was replaced.  I thought Timlin was solid, hardworking but unspectacular although I do think he has been a positive for the team since his return from the seaside. Douglas looked OK and he and Prutton were the most creative midfield players on the pitch.  Prutton endeavoured to create chances for most of the game and was, for me, the MOM.  In defence Smith was solid although I'd ask, like others, what is all this kicking to one side of the pitch all about?  It was routinely used again last night and on at least two occasions the ball went straight out giving Notts County the throw-in. Please vary it - it wasn't working & was very predictable.  In terms of his shot stopping & taking crosses there were no obvious scares or concerns.  Cuthbert was solid although he's undoubtedly a better central defender than a full back.  Having said that didn't he play full back whilst on loan from Celtic at St Mirren (?) or wherever?  Caddis, despite all the concerns about being too short, looked competent when he came on and I think deserves a run in the team.  JP also improved the shape of the team when he was on although this season he's yet (in my opinion) to reach the dazzling form he showed last season. Still an acceptable display on balance from him. Rose was adequate defensively, no better or worse than anyone else in the defence although I had hoped for a free kick 'special' towards the end but alas he missed the goal with his effort.
And so to the central defensive pairing!  Morrison & Jean Francois didn't lose too many in the air last night and we weren't obviously greatly threatened by Westcarr or Miller. Jean Francois is something of a ball playing defender and can be a liability. His booking last night was harsh - the player he was alleged to have 'fouled' had run across the face of the town defence, Jean Francois went to tackle him & he went down. According to my Notts County supporting friends, this is a feature of his play, inviting a tackle, spectacularly falling and winning a free kick.  My major complaint with Jean Francois is why can't he stay upright & on his feet?  He seems to get turned, becomes unbalanced & falls far too easily and we concede goals as a consequence. His substitution was because of this booking as a few minutes later he committed what for me was a worse & more obvious foul and the referee seemed loathe to book him again & get a red card out - referee's creating their own problems because a sending off would have been farcical. Morrison was not as dominant as I've seen him or as I'd have liked to have seen him.  I did fear the worst when Hughes came on as he's an experienced streetwise striker and I'm sure Morrison's inexperience in giving him too much room was the main reason for the goal.  I also wondered if Hughes didn't use his arm to help control the ball before shooting although that could be my red & white bias coming through.
So, in conclusion we were in contention for most of the match, little to choose between the teams until the introduction of Hughes. We seemed to be far too passive, not enough imposing ourselves on the game and I was surprised to see the BBC match stats afterwards that suggested how little there was between the teams.
As a Town fan living in Nottingham I've had to take some good natured banter today but I'd rather have been the one in the driving seat.  Not the best game I've seen at Meadow Lane but reports that our season has imploded are exaggerated

Fortunately for us that seems to be very often the case, teams' supporters spend more time abusing Lee hughes than supporting their own team, and when he plays, often replies in the way he did last night.

This is better then reading the match report in the adver you could make a career out of this

Tis good. I liked my mate's post match text after the final whistle. Shit game, played by two shit teams. Summed it up almost as well for me.

Fortunately for us that seems to be very often the case, teams' supporters spend more time abusing Lee hughes than supporting their own team, and when he plays, often replies in the way he did last night.
Yes, but he is steaming festering pile of human excrement who most teams would be embarassed to have disgrace their shirt.

Morrison at fault. You can't give a striker that much room or space.

Interesting...If he is 100% fit he should be in contention for right back with Sheehan/Rose.

As for why the defence hasn't been sorted, who knows. Have you asked Dave why we didn't replace Greer :)

Where is Dave, I don't think he's posted all week?  Not like him, I hope he's okay?   :(
