Title: Peterborough United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Posh Red on Saturday, October 16, 2010, 09:32:34
Well nobody else has started one yet, and I suppose it's only right that I should start it for my (cough) Home (cough) fixture.

I'm praying for a positive result (would make next week much easier to bear), but have a feeling that we may just lose those one.

Posh score goals for Fun, but are just as prone to let them in so you'd think it might be a high scoring affair.
However I have the feeling we might just lose 1-0

That seems to be the logic of everyone on the Prediction League. We both score lots and concede lots, so it'll be 0-0.

3-2 Swindon, fuck it. I don't think I've predicted a loss all season.

Think a draw is the best we can hope for.

1-1.

A draw would be a fine result, today we will see how good Cuthbert and Morrison really are with the Posh strikeforce.

My brother in law moved back to Swindon area this week after decades in the wilderness in Peterborough. God it's so bloody flat up there!!

Now he's back with a proper team, he just needs educating!  Interestingly, he says that  no matter how well they do on the pitch they're always under fire from the fans and the local population in the area is as apathetic as it is around here.

By the way 2 - 1 to us.

PETERBOROUGH UNITED (4-4-2): Joe Lewis; Mark Little, Gabriel Zakuani, Kelvin Langmead, Tommy Rowe; Arron Davies, Lee Frecklington, Grant McCann, George Boyd; Aaron Mclean, Craig Mackail-Smith

Subs: Steve Collis, Seth Nana Ofori-Twumasi, Charlie Lee, Carl Piergianni, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Matthew Gill, David Hibbert

Bar the front 3 and Gavin McCann I really don't think it's that good, we are going to have a hard job on our hands at the back this afternoon though that's for sure.

This is the team that played the first 25 mins against Rovers.

Difference is that Peterboro have strikers that know how to score.

It could by five by half time.

And it doesn't help that Lucas is arguing with the Town fans.

And now we've got one back.

Trouble is were going timbres to score a hatfull to get a point

one of the funniest away days ever was at london road, the game was pretty uneventful think it was 1-1 (about six years ago or something) really hot summers day and town faithful in good spirits in the sunshine ended up taking the piss out of the peterborough fans by singing are you peterborough in disguise. Fuck off cambridge fuck off cambridge etc, you're even worse than peterborough :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

We were in stitches I tell you. Seem to remember big malc the town fan got his glasses broken and his teeth punched out that day too anyone remember this?

Fucking get in....Austin on and 3-2 now let's do this Town.

I put the radio on to find we were 3-0 down.  Switched it straight off in disgust, got sidetracked for a few minutes before coming on here to have a good old moan and suddenly it's 3-2 and we've only played half an hour.  WTF?  What a glorious time this would be to banish this god awful record of not being able to go on and win when we go behind.

Why do we always make it so difficult for ourselves though?

In terms of the Pericard/Austin substitution, I would have thought it was quite obvious as to the reason's behind it.  3-0 down and Wilson recognises that Pericard hasn't got it in him to be doing anything to change things.  Charlie has and will be raring to go after being sidelined!

This is possibly the most bizarre game of football I have ever listened to on BBC Wiltshire.

First 3-0 down after 20 minutes, then a getting a goal back, then Pericard off for Austin, then 3-2.  And it sounds like we are not playing too badly.

Come on Town!  Geteratem!

If Wilson truly believed Pericard had nothing about him, he wouldn't have (a) signed him or (b) started with him. I think everybody was expecting 4-4-2 but in fairness to Wilson we've got two back and sound like we're doing ok

2-0. Pissed off. Go into asda for 3 mins. Come out 3-1. Park up and into the house. Turn on Radio 3-2 and Austin is on. WTF is going on ?!

As a team defensively when we are good we are very very good but when we are bad we are awful.

Still, credit where credit is due. Now come on and get the equaliser.

32 mins: We're hearing that Pericard may have been withdrawn due to a groin problem that he was struggling with during the week.

Possible injury.

Not sure what to do about the second half?  Shall I disappear for the next 45 minutes away from tv, radio and pc keeping everything crossed or do I remain glued?  Not sure I can take the strain of it all.  Would have taken a point before the game as I'm sure all of us would, but even more so now.  To go on and take all 3 would be immense, but surely not possible?   On the other hand I can't contemplate the thought of us now losing, it would be devastating!

One of those games really. I don't think you can complain too much about the defensive side. Ok, going 3 down in the first 25 minutes was a joke and should never have happened, but we came back from it and even fought back after going 4-3 down. The late goal is a gutting blow but he we held on for 4-4 it would have been a great result

And for the third game out of the last 4, we've conceded a goal in the last minute or so.  Cost us last season and will do again this one.

Irrelevant if it was an exciting game, as is the case more often than not, we're the team who have come away with nothing!

Not a great game for our defence and Morrison in particular. But he's too young and inexperienced to be relied on week in week out.

4 points from the play-offs and 3 from relegation - we're playing like a mid-table team and I think that's where we'll finish this season.

In some ways I would actually have preferred to lose 4-0, than fight back (twice), score 4 goals but still come away with nothing.  We need to learn not to switch off until the final whistle, there is no excuse for that, they're bloody professionals!  Pissed off with it tbh.

Personally I'd rather the team showed some fight and maintained a respectable goal difference, but each to their own

Agree with you Reeves 4E.
Had we let in 4 or 5 and scored none I think that would give much more cause for concern.

Leyton Orient (H)
Yeovil Town (A)
Charlton (H)
Colchester (H)

Massive 4 games coming up, could define our season.

Quite right, the three good saves Lewis pulled off from Austin, Amankwaah and Austin were clear examples of us trying our best not to win it.

Didn't expect anything from today's game, gutted the way it pans out, but those next four games look like the kind of runs we need to get 10-12 points on to be up the top of the table.

Glad that he didn't make any excuses and said the defence was poor, but he as manager is the one who fundamently needs to sort this out and quickly.

3 defeats in the last 4 games with 11 goals conceded is clearly a massive issue.

Haven't read the complete thread or listened to the commentary, but we really do start games so slowly, a la Brighton andPlymouth and Bristol Rovers should have been comfortably in front in the first half.  Perhaps DW needs to wind them up a bit more just before kick-off.

Not one of Morrisons better days to be fair, and last goal was his fault but the whole defense were pretty poor. Did piss me off that after fucking up & giving away the fifth goal he didn't bother coming over to the fans and instead headed down the tunnel as soon as he could.

To fight back from 3-0 & not get anything from the game is just so annoying and avoidable.

He's known we needed a centre back since July.

It's what will cost us at the end of the season. Shipping 5 just isn't good enough.

At least we scored four, a front three of Ball-Austin-Ritchie will cause teams alot of trouble but thats no good if we keep shipping goals at the back.

In training the players should play 95 minute matches with time added on too. Then the goals would be conceded after 95 minutes and we all know you rarely get more than 5 mins of added time in a match. Good bit of psychology there would work wonders on the team.

1. We scored Four
2. We scored Four away from home
3. Charlie's back
4. Charlie scored
5. stfcinbmth has still not seen Sir Charles miss a penalty

Not really, it was a case of two teams that don't know how to defend properly.

Only positive that I can see, they are up at the top end of the league (2nd now I think), and there really wasn't an awful lot to choose between the two sides.

Line up & formation was the same as Monday.

None of the defense played particularly well (especially in the first 25-30 mins), but I wouldn't say Manks was any worse than the others.

Think it was just easy to point the finger because he scored the OG, but in all fairness had Morrison taken one of his opportunities to clear the ball it wouldn't have happened.

I think it's just a trait that a lot of fans have, every season they have someone who takes the blame, it's almost as if by doing that the others can be let off for making mistakes & poor games.

Also Rose could have quite easily taken a yellow for the team by taking the guy down just outside the box before the og.

Some positives today but in general against any sort of pace up front we look awful in defence, against any sort of strength in midfield we can't cope.

Fortunately there are goals in the side but a lot of that will depend on whether we can keep Ritchie any longer than the initial month.

As has been said both teams were very poor defensively but you have to question what they were training toward during the week, we know boro are going to try and attack with pace and in numbers so why did we allow them to so much until 3-0?

Not sure where to start with that game!  Neither side could defend and could easily have been 7-7!  Disappointed to lose a 9-goal game in that way but was just a crazy, crazy game!

Our defence was very poor but have to give credit to Peterborough - they looked very good going forward with some slick one touch passing and movement at times, and they pour forward in numbers when they attack.  They've already put 5 past Huddersfield at London Road this season, and I dare say some other teams will concede a lot of goals there before the season is out.

Going forward we looked dangerous as well and could have had more than the 4 - even though 2 of the 4 goals were gifted to us (one by their keeper, and one by their no 14).  Austin coming back linked up really well with Ball & Ritchie and look forward to seeing him playing there more often in this new formation (if we stick with it).

Defence though struggled - but i think today was the hardest test we'll have away from home this season.  Big Kev looked good going forward today, but poor at times at the back - 4th goal looked as though he may have been at fault - not much he could do about the og though, was reminiscent of Greer's at Millwall last season.  Morrison should have got rid of the ball miles before the cross came in though in the first place - someone else who had a poor game.

Overall disappointing to lose such an exciting game in that manner - but if we can continue to attack like that with Charlie leading the attack now then we will score goals, but we do need to get that defence shored up ASAP!

Not back long.

Fucking gutted to lose that after we did so well to get back into it.

Basically, if it wasnt for the defence we would have won that.

We looked great going forward. Ball, Ritchie and Charlie when he came on were great.

If we can sort our defence out and continue to attack like we did today then there is no reason why we cant make play offs, otherwise we are in for a fairly average mid table season.

I've long thought that one of the reasons we concede so many is that we don't commit enough fouls. Other teams will commit a foul and take a yellow card if necessary to stop an attack and break up the play, this tactic doesn't seem to be in our game plan and it needs to be. I don't like that kind of play but if you can't beat them, join them.

Yes, but one of the main sticks used to beat a certain ex defender of ours was that he gave away too many silly free kicks - which we never conceded from.

Not saying you did personally Jonny but plenty of people have done.

Got back about 7.45, haven't felt like posting and haven't read back through the read, but my 2p.

The first 20 minutes was truley shocking, defensively at least. Cuthbert got beat in the air too easily for the first, Morrison was at fault for the second and Lucas' poor kick led to the third. All easily avoidable. Then we get back in the game, with two gifts from their back four and a bizarre second goal. Still not sure how it went in, so will be interesting to watch on the FLS.

Second half we could have gone ahead through JPM, and their keeper has pulled off 3 worldies. Didn't get a great view of their fourth, but the winner was so avoidable it makes me sick. Morrison just had to put his fucking foot through the ball. The last seconds of the game and he tries to beat their attacker?

I can't remember our 2 keepers making a save of note. It seemed like everytime they had a meaningful effort on target they scored, mostly because the errors gifted them such simple opportunities.

Back 4 were gash. Rose was the pick of the bunch (never thought I'd day that 6 weeks ago). Amankwaah is just not good enough at the moment, for whatever reason. Looked really dodgy against pace, and I would like to see Caddis get a run there now, or if he's not a right back, bring one in. Cuthbert was the better of the 2 CBs but at fault for their first, Morrison had a bit of a mare.

Ferry and Dougie were standard. The beauty of these two is that they're so consistent. JPM isn't doing it for me in the hole. The 2 wide boys were awesome again going forward. Pericard done fuck all until going off. Austin was awesome until the 80th minute and then stopped. He was clearly absolutely knackered.

Because Austin couldn't pressure their back four any more, we began to sit back, which is why they finished the game so strongly, but the goal was sickingly avoidable.

They are a bloody good side at this level. We know all about the front three but Lewis in goal was superb second half, as was their right back. If we could have got a point it would have been an incredible result, but still there are some real positives to take from the game - mostly the 2 wide boys getting better and better and Austin looking so good on his come back.

The negatives - the three injuries, well certainly Lucas and Dougie, could really hurt us just as we were starting to get some strength in depth back. The defence is still very shaky, and the hunt for an experienced CB should still go on, and I'll say it again, if Caddis is not a RB, we need to bring one in.

All in all, a mental game which was thoroughly enjoyable between the 24th and the 93rd minute, but felt absolutely gutted when we conceded the late goal.

I was leading the charge in slagging off Greer for all the stupid free kicks round the area, and we did concede from at least one of them and maybe more. But they were stupid free kicks, little pushes and fouls when our defence was back and organised which isn't what I'm talking about.

You just have to look at the way other teams play against us, or even the England game midweek, to see the sort of fouls I'm referring to - away from the area, on the break etc.

greer was consistant all last season and a major factor in last seasons success.flogged for £250,000 and seen as good business by many.
morrison has about as many good games as awful ones and fans think he's worth big money.
the formation doesn't help, but the personel is the biggest factor imo of why we are where we are.

Morrison is a much better player than Greer. I thought we already established this.

Morrison on the top of his game will give you 8 out of 10.
Greer at the top of his game will only give you a 7 out of 10.

However, when Morrison has a poor game, he's poor and will give you a 4 out of 10. Greer on a bad day will only go as low as a 6 out of 10. Much less variation between his best and worst. Much more consistent

Morrison and Cuthbert as a partnership probably only give you a 6 out of 10, where as a Greer and Cuthbert partnership gives you 8 out of 10

...if any of that made sense.

spine of team last season.
lucas
greer
douglas
paynter

this season.
lucas
douglas

add to that the changed shape with those like jpm who were superb last year in different roles and there you have it.in my opinion why we are miles off last seasons form.

greer had games where he was an 8 rating at least too.

Just read through the whole thread and I've got to say that some posts made me more pissed off than game did! Lots of slagging off of the people who text in, but quite a few retarded comments right here on the tef.

Most open game I've been to in a long time, both teams appeared to be operating their defences using an on/off switch (We didn't even plug ours in at the start!)

Amazing comeback at 3-0 down and in the 2nd half it was only down to Lewis in the peterboro goal that stopped us from scoring another 3. No exaggeration, those saves were top-drawer.

Neither side sat back at 4-4 and despite the gut wrenching disappointment of conceding at the death, it was good to see Town carrying the fight to them.

I think I went through every emotion yesterday, just a shame the last one was despair!

I think we can win the next 5 games on the spin. But the players, particularly the defence need to wake up, we cannot keep starting games so slowly. They need to get out of bed half an hour earlier or something.

Orient is now a pressure game, they need to correct the woeful performance of the League Cup 1st round and really go at them from the off.

I hope with Charlie now back, we will go 4-4-2 with JPM on the right wing and Ritchie on the left. Either Ball or Pericard will have to sit on the bench. Caddis and Sheehan to come back in. But if Wilson doesnt do that Im not going to cry about it, like some people seem to.

We have missed certain players badly, and not just Charlie. Sheehan ran the game up at Walsall, he was absolutely superb.

Dropping Ball would be riduculous, Mcgovern needs to be dropped..

I'd just make 2 changes - Lucas for Smith unless Lucas is injured. I'd also have a look at Nathan Thompson instead of Caddis - oh and Sheehan ahead of Rose. I think we need to go back to 4-4-2.

Sheehan's the better player without doubt, but Rose hasn't done much wrong. He's probably been one of our best players last few weeks.

                        Smith

Caddis    Morrison   Cuthbert   Rose

             Prutton    Douglas  Ferry

Ball                                            Ritchie
                      Austin

In my opinion the attack does not need to altered if we can score 4 away from home.

Slightly off topic, but has anybody else noticed what bollocks the game stats on the BBC, O/S etc are. Says we only had 4 on target. But 4 goals 2 blinding saves, and the one from JPM = 7 on target. Who actually reports those as they are way off.

It kind of does and I think you're right but the attempt to put numbers on it makes it look like it's a statistical fact of some form. Whereas clearly it's not demonstrable in quite that way. It's a bit more paranormal than that

I think 442 is the formation we need to be playing.

For me there are questions as to personal in the fullback areas, think Caddis could work really well with JP down the right and if Sheehan is fit I'd bring him back in as I think him and Ritchie down the left could well be the most important area of the pitch for us.

I'd go the same midfield as last season with Ritchie in for Ward obviously and Ball up front with Austin - they're both capable of working the channels and moving with the ball themselves.  I quite like Vince but he is limited - the type of player he is always will be as even the averagely good ones are in the Prem - look at Kenwy Jones - he does his best and tries to bring other people into the game but I think our game would imrove with better movement up front.

I'm looking forward do seeing us at full stength because I genuinly believe we have what it takes once we're there and think we will take somebody to the cleaners very soon.

I did try and write it about 3 or 4 times - this way made the most sense but as you said its not perfect. Its a hard opinion to put directly into words or equations.

Good Morrison > Good Greer > Bad Greer > Bad Morrison

I think you've pretty much got that right, Dave/DV.

I don't think everything's all rosey. Not by any stretch. But I still don't think things are as bad as is being made out. It's been said countless time that we haven't replaced what we lost and that is still correct! There's still plenty of time left this season and having seen how desperate other teams than just ourselves are to chuck away points, I don't think we'll at any point be out of the running for where we want to be this season. Some intelligent buys in January and we could all be looking back on this and thinking what were we getting so stressed out for.

Things are not great, but they aren't as bad as some people seem to be making out. The formations have been hit and miss, but the ones employed yesterday and vs Rovers seem to allow us to attack quite well. This may have hampered a couple of star performers from last season, but over all it seems to work. We just need to sort the defence out and we all know what we need there...

The 4-5-1 looks good I think.

I'd go:

Lucas (if fit)

Caddis
Cuthbert
Morrison
Sheehan

Douglas
Ferry

Ball
Prutton
Ritchie

Austin

But its also conceding for us too! Its not just the back 4 that is the problem (in my opinion obviously).

I don't the answer mind, I don't know what our best formation/starting 11 is right now.

Fucking mobile was bleeping non stop with updates.

Watched the highlights last night...woeful defending al round.

Last season we let in last minute goals, this season we give the oppo 15 minutes of fill yer boots 'free time' (Plymuff, Gas and PBoro).

Wilson has to slam the brakes on.

Mankys own goal sums up his form...gutted for him as i rate him.

Hi All,
Posh fan in peace.
Firstly commiserations for yesterday, you must be totally gutted coming away with nothing.

What a bloody crazy game, we've come to accept that sort of thing at London Road, bloody good entertainment but not good for the old ticker.

Both sides couldn't defend to save their lives, thankfully we had a bit more up front.
Thought that we were awesome in the first twenty minutes and our first 3 goals were class, good movement, so dont be too harsh on your defence,  but I have to say your keeper looked really dodgy, not surprised he was substituted at half time.
God knows what happened after 25mins, I think our lads thought they were bloody Real Madrid and pissed about with it around our box.
As for your goals we gifted you all of them really, the first we just let Ball waltz through, for the second our skipper McCann (who is a class act normally) pissed about near the edge of our box for Ritchie to pounce, and the third Rowe decided to do the same near the halfway line when one on one, terrible mistake but to be fair a decent finish by Ball.
At least Rowe redeemed himself to set up our fourth.
If we hadn't pissed around enough, Charlie Lee then decided to handball the fooking thing to give you a penalty and your fourth.
Our fifth and the winner was a result of fresh legs and Mendez-Laing skinning your left back 3 times in the space of as many minutes, I did feel for Amankwaah as he looked decent for the rest of the game.

So overall, based on the quality of our goals and the fact that we gifted you yours, I think we deserved to win.
Having said that I had Lewis (our keeper) down as joint man of the match for 3 great saves.
Oh and how did McGovern miss that one on one, as that could have turned the game your way?

Biggest question for me was:- God knows why Austin didn't start for you he looked good?

Also it was nice to see a team not resort too much to cheating tactics like we have see many teams do at London Road this season.
Keep positve guys, you do look pretty decent going forward, but have the same problem as us, you cant defend, sort that out and you'll be fine.
And thanks for an entertaining, albeit mental game.
Looking forward to coming to your place.

p.s. Does anyone know that lad with a sliver BMW with something like SWIINDON as his plate? top guy!

Really strange in a way because there seems to be a lot of doom and gloom on here (including me).
If we had won i should imagine the outlook today by a lot of us would be different..a 1-0 win and a scrappy goal would have sufficed!

Cheers leefer.   Same on our forum mate, always get the doom merchants, we are second in the league and you wouldn't believe the negativity. Joe Lewis constantly gets slagged off, I know which keeper I'd prefer yesterday.
1-0 scrappy win, no way at London Road. All the best for the rest of the season (apart from 28 Dec ;) )

I  know you can only judge him on what you see, but in fairness Lucas (our keeper) has been pretty good for us since we got him. Has made the odd howler or two, but most (all) keepers do at some point.

Wilson claimed he was subbed at half time after feeling groggy after having the out earlier in the week.

Anywho, all the best and all that. Go for that second place as obviously we'll be top :)

I've only just been able to bring myself to watching Saturday's highlights. Apart from the defending, which doesn't need any more comment - the one thing that stands out is that David Ball's finishing and composure for both of his goals.

Be interesting to see how he'd work in a 2 with Austin now he's got his feet under the table here. Be interesting to see whether we go 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 on Saturday. If we go 4-4-2, it would indicate to me that Wilson's philosophy hasn't changed, and that the other 2 formations used this year have only been used due to lack of personnel.

Agreed. We have the players for 4-4-2 now. I think it's a goer. That said 4-3-3 stroke 4-5-1 has served us quite well going forward in the last 3 games.

Depends on injuries though, and Austin is not fully fit either so 4-5-1 may still be required, it has worked the last few games  so why abandon it if you ignore the P'Boro result which hopefully was only a freak result
