Think the knives will come out today if we leave Hartlepool pointless, but it's a tricky place to go.  Isn't this the place where on the radio they just spend 90 minutes commenting on how the wind swirls round Victoria Park?  A dire 1-1 draw, Austin to double his tally for the season thus far.

Stuck at work so will be watching on the BBC vidiprinter....

I'd really like to see Ferry come in today, preferably in place of Prutton in a 4 man midfield. 4-5-1 would obviously be another way to accommodate him though.

Wilson's been very disappointed with the players so far and it sounds like he's made it known to them that so far performances haven't been acceptable. Hopefully we'll get it right today. Any win will be a big result, I'd take a draw.

Problem we have is that we have not adequately replaced the 3 key players in Ward, Paynter, Greer. Consequently the midfield looks too narrow, we are light up front and have no leader at the back.

Until we rectify this do not think we are going to get anywhere close to last years position.

No, but this is a thread about Hartlepool vs Swindon. Whilst the TEF has a great tradition of threads going way off track, did it not seem a bit out of place to have a moan about our prospects for the season in a thread specifically designed for discussion about one particular match?

I'd go:

Lucas

Amankwaah
Cuthbert
LJF
Caddis

JPM
Ferry
Dougie
Dossevi

Pericard
Austin

We're far from the "must win" stage, but matches like this were where we really grinded out results last season, the true mark of a successful team. An ugly win would do me nicely.

I've got the last two results right and with our fragile confidence and poor mental attitude(at present) I see another defeat.  Can't see where the goals are coming from and can't see any clean sheets with Lucas or Smithy in goal.  I hope I'm very wrong.

dossevi replaced paynter and ball replaced ward, greer is the only one we havnt replaced

Only in the fact they are here.

Its only early days but Dossevi and Ball have alot to do before they effectively replace Paynter and Ward.

4-5-1 is wank. Guess we are playing for a draw then.

0-0, shit, rubbish and boos

Although we started off last season with a defeat and a draw.

Charlie might as well have been playing on his own up front then.

Looking at the line-up as listed on the official site, might O'Brien be playing in a more advanced role perhaps?  :hmmm:

Three strikers on the bench and one midfielder, better hope there are no injuries

Fuck me, let's kill ourselves now shall we.

How many did we lose last season? 6? I guess some of our heads are still in last season. It seems to me that the team hasn't gelled yet for what ever reason. They'll come good (I just hope it's soon).

Wilson out
We should never have sold Greer
Fitton doesn't invest in the team, he's only in it for the money
Lecsinel is useless
Cuthbert is nothing without Greer
We're going down this season, no doubt about it
We didn't build on last season, sack the board and manager and the players
Austin is overrated
We should never have left Ward go
We'll never win games with Pericard in the team
Pericard and Dossevi are just cheap replacements for Paynter, no ambition from the board

Did I miss anything?

Brighton away the season before last.

They went 1-0 then we got goals from Greer, Cox and Paynter - they pulled one back in the last minute I think.

Its difficult to declare a formation a success or failure after 20 minutes. Just like its difficult to write a team off after 2 1/2 games.

But we are chasing this one. I'd go 4-4-2 and bring on a striker too.

the formation to me anyway, looked like we wanted a draw.

Going 1-0 down after 4 minutes makes this formation completely pointless. I'd leave it till half time at the latest.

Problem we have is that we have not adequately replaced the 3 key players in Ward, Paynter, Greer. Consequently the midfield looks too narrow, we are light up front and have no leader at the back.

Until we rectify this do not think we are going to get anywhere close to last years position.

You forgot Sheehan-whom we have not adequately replaced.

I wanted us to go 4-3-3 by half time.

Now is it co-incidence or do you think Wilson waited till Hartlepool took off both their strikers? then went 4-3-3.

He's either had a bit of luck on his side or played that one perfectly.

We were dogshit first half, no connection between the midfield and forwards. When we went three up front we stopped worrying about the wings and just went for it. This dragged their defence to the middle and allowed aob to become useful and he put in a number of good crosses in the last half hour.

Sounds like the defence really is a problem. I thought Lucas would make a difference but apparently not.

Same here.

The commentary likened the pairing of Cuthbert and LJF to Ifil and O'Hanlon 'both good technically, but shipped a lot of goals'.  Defence definitely seems to be the key issue, we can't afford to keep going behind to silly goals.  We also seem to have a problem with taking a decent corner or free kick - schoolboy stuff really.

A good point, which most of us would have taken before the game and taken ten times over at 4.15pm.  Hopefully this will give us confidence and be the kick start we need and give Wilson an idea of the formation that works best (not entirely sure what that is to be honest?!)

Great point, was getting really worried at 2-0 down, even had to post a WTF on my poxy Blackberry Pearl, what a palavva.

Hopefully a goal each will give Charlie and Dossevi confidence for the next game which I fully expect to be three points. Notice O'Brien started did he do anything of note? Or did he get taken off?

Went to watch B'mth Poppies v Abingdon Town in the FA cup. Not a bad game at all, Poppies won 1-0

No, they are a bit like Sky, and there is only one league, despite Sky and BBC covering the FL as well.

I think the way we got our point today could prove to be very important. The players could of started doubting themselves so hopefully we can kick on.
Agree with that.

The players deservedly took a bit of stick at the final whistle on Tuesday night and another poor result today would have piled on the pressure ahead of Brentford at home. If we can grab a win from that, we'll be well on our way.

I still don't understand the LJF and Ifil comparisons - Lecsinel is about a hundred times more composed, more intelligent and he can actually control and pass a football. Ifil & O'Hanlon was never a good partnership because neither took control and that is the only comparison that can be made between them and Lecs and Cuthbert. LJF will never be a vocal leader but Cuthbert could be.

Looking at the stats on todasy game it looks like we had close on 60% of the possession, had 7 attempts on target to their 3, and 9 corners to their three.

Away from home that's not bad going.

Summed up exactly. People only make the comparison because as a pairing they looks similar (one black, one with a skinhead). I think the comparison is verging on insulting such is the gulf in class between the individuals.

We've played two league games, generally bossed both, but have been caught out a bit at the back.

No need to panic, it'll probably take another 3-4 games for the team to really gel, during which we'll drop a few points, but nothing which will ruin our season.

What's important is that Charlie is still scoring.  That was something I was worried about, what with him losing his partner and being in his second season.

No doubt the vast majority of which hardly ever go to a live game. There's a few of them at work so called Chelsea and Man U fans. Rather than go and stick some dosh in their local non league sides pockets they live for MOTD, Sky Sports and football streaming. I keep pointing out it's much more fun to go to a game but it falls on deaf ears, think they think that they are being disloyal to their club, when in fact the likes of Chelsea, Man U etc couldn't give a toss about their supporters even their armchair ones

Very pleased, to draw 2-2 after being 2-0 down at half-time away from home is a good result. OK you can question why we were 2 down in the first place because it sounds like they were awful goals to concede, but to come back shows a lot of character and fight which is really encouraging.

The stats show we were probably the better side again, so we just have to cut out the silly goals against and we'll be fine, we carry plenty of threat at the other end.

Looking forward to Brentford now, hope we can get our first win.

Just got back and have to say that but for a weak header from Lecs for the 2nd and a you kick it, no you kick it moment between Scotty and JD we were much the better side.Caddis looked sharp, O'brien had one run in particular in the 2nd half when he went past at least 3 of their players got to the byline and finished with a good cross. They seemed to panic when Pericard came on and we appeared to have more room to play.Dossevi  :clap:took his goal well and Charlie was pure class. Not sure if you can play Ferry JD and Jesus together though, seemed a bit flat and improved once Ferry went off. Must mention the Cross dresser in the blue dress giving dogs abuse to Hartlepool, goes to all matches in the away end and slags off Hartlepool.Good to have characters

Got back about an hour ago - we dominated posession today and carved out a few decent chances, we'd have won it comfortably if we didn't gift Hartlepool a 2 goal head start.  I can only remember one chance that Hartlepool managed to create themselves (when they hit the bar in the 1st half).

Thought Caddis looked good again, and O'Brien seems to be beginning to show something - got a fair few crosses in today after beating his man, just needs to work on his delivery a bit more and he could set up a lot of goals this season.  Dossevi looked good when he came on, fantastic finish and Austin took his chance very cooly too.

Worrying thing is obviously the defence - both goals came from hesitancy (JD & Cuthbert left the ball to each other for the first one, and the 2nd one LJF let it bounce before trying to head it back to Lucas and got no purchase on the header).  Definitely needs someone at the back who talks to everyone - having Lucas back helped a bit with that today.

My other slight frustration was everyone's reluctance to shoot.  A couple of times near the end someone had the ball on the edge or just inside the area with a decent chance to let a shot off and decided to either pass it to someone else or piss around with it and the chance was gone.

Overall though I'd give the performance a 7 out of 10, and hopefully the comeback from 2-0 will finally kick start our season.

And my favourite part of today was when Monkhouse when down softly for a free kick and Lucas shouted to JP (who fouled him) "next time just fuckin hit him"!!  :D

I thought we looked reluctant to shoot against Brighton last weekend, at times we wanted to take an extra touch or make an extra pass instead of just having a pop when the chance came, I wondered if it was confidence related perhaps. We looked more adventurous against Orient in the first half and the players took a few more attempts which came to nothing.

Dead chuffed with 2-2 in hindsight. It's obvious we're missing a gobby leader at the back. Ironic that Greer went 2 and 2 on the red card front today!

Tough challenge coming up with Brentford. Anyone seen their team on paper these days? They have quality (make no mistake) and will be no push overs.

Can't disagree much with what has been posted already by those who went. I'd like to single out two players though, one good, one bad.

David Prutton - utterly pedestrian, second to every ball, looks a yard off the pace and lacking ideas. On the bright side, a very good pass to put Caddis in in 2nd half.

Alan O'Brien - Really good performance from Alan today. I singled him out against Orient for his performance and today was more of the same. Frightening pace and the delivery is getting there. Could be a big bonus for us this season if he stays fit.

Prutton seems to me to keep trying to play 'exotic' passes when there are easy balls on.  One example today in the first half when he had the chance to slide JPM in for what could have been a chance, instead playing a cross-field pass to.....no-one!!  There wasn't a Town player within 20 yards of where the pass went so not sure who / what he saw!!

As with any player who pulls on the red of Swindon though I'll give him time.  Met up with a Leeds fan before today's game who said Prutton was a quality player for them - I think he's a good player but for whatever reason he hasn't quite showed it yet in our first 3 games.

2900 for their first league game of the season after they beat Sheff United in midweek?

Surely whoever is bankrolling them cant go on forever?

In the third tier I can only remmember ever going to a game with a lower attendance than that. Wrexham away about 2002, and they went terminally downhill after that. Dagenham will be a new low though, cant remmember a club as small as that being in the 3rd tier for years?

Reading their boards a mixture of disliking the manager, high unemployment, and they have 3 three big northeast teams on thier doorstep, cant be easy being there. Strong possibility most sides going to D&R  the away fans will outnumber the home fans .

If you go back ot the late 70s then Chester and Tranmere regularly used to get crowds of less than a thuosand in Div 3 and palying us wouldn't tip it into 4 figures, particularly as we'd only take 50-100 to these games.

But the bloke has hardly played 90 minutes for us yet.  I am not convinced he will come good but am at least willing to give him a chance.  When you are getting slated even before you a stripping down to come on it's got to make your job that much harder.

Sometimes i despair with our fans, i had a right pop at a couple of 'fans' at the orient game for giving O'brien grief, he made 1 miss pass and the torrent of abuse they dished out was incredible, then when he pulled off some nice control and moved the ball on it was all "bout fucking time.....er yeah one off..." etc. I fucking despair with some fans. Both pericard and O'brien have only a handful of starts to their name, match confidence is a fragile thing and takes a while to achieve, something that will never happen if people are constantly on their backs. Sometimes i think the term 'supporter' is so wide of the mark. If both have a good run in the team but are still out of their depth then fair enough, but for fuck sake give them a chance before the witch hunt starts and its normally by people who weren't even at the fucking games!!!!!!  :suicide:

Whilst i'm at it those gunning for Rose need to have a word with themselves, the lad has played 3 competitive starts for us but has suddenly become the weak link. I fail to see how our defensive frailties can be laid at his door. I'd go as far to say that some of the goals we've conceeded are just a tad unfortunate, and more down to our defending as a team than just our defence. I'd love for just one game to have eveyone in attendance being positive and loud and getting behind the team and seeing where it takes us....

Sometimes i despair with our fans.

It's always been the same....and will stay so.

Rose took approx 50 mins to become a target by the failure to deliver decent crosses from a variety of promising positions.....then a few goals going in from his side don't help. Personally I think he will come good for us.

What you need to do is something memorable on debut or early doors, and it buys you leeway.

Look at Brez...wonderful debut and a fair bit of shit after, but he never got the sort of treatment that Phil Smith gets.

County durham is 100% Sunderland and norff of the river Tyne is 100% toon army whilst Jarrow/Hebburn/Felling/ Gateshead is split 50/50

I work in Co. Durham and I assure you, it's certainly not 100% The majority support Sunderland but there's a massive Newcastle following.

Either way, Hartlepool don't stand a chance.

Completely agree with you and stegen. I actually thought Rose was one of our better players for long periods of the Brighton game - hardly surprising that his understanding with the rest of our very young back line may not have been spot on having only played with them for a few weeks.

Considering some of the signings and quality of football we've been subjected to as fans over the last decade or so i think everyone would be in agreement that Wilson knows what he is doing and has proved himself a good judge of talent.

OK, he's not going to get it right every time but as has been noted its hugely unfair to write these players off and get on their backs after so few games.

Lets just put things in perspective and see where we are come christmas eh?

Big Vinnie really is fighting a losing battle isn't he?

Well, yes

Maybe if he actually scored a goal or two.

Yes, im not overally fussed about what record he has in the past but the fact is, he hasnt done it fr us at all.

Not even looked like scoring and those claiming he set Austin up saturday really are straw clutching, he miss controlled it. Thank god he did!

He's still not shown enough and still seems to be carrying a knock, forever!

Well he's had shots blocked, cleared off the line and I've seen him hit the post twice. Could have had a handful of goals if he had a bit more luck.

If he'd tucked that infamous header away from 3 yards it could have gone so differently.

Will surely go out on loan as he just doesn't cut the mustard technically or athletically.

I'm still convinced there is a player in there somewhere, but how long do you give him? I'd say at least 1/2 this season - but we have options so he may be on the bench and hence still hard to judge.

Title: Re: Hartlepool United V Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread

Well, yes

Maybe if he actually scored a goal or two.

But he has hardly played, which is my point.  And he isn't a goal scorer, his history and feedback from Carlisle fans back this up.  His strength is bringing other players into play and setting up things for them, similar to Billy until last season.

Look, I'm not saying that Vinnie is the answer to our prayers, all I am saying is we are giving him little chance to impress because we are on his back even when he is sat on the bench, which has been the majority of his time here.  If it doesn't work out, then fine show him the door, but at least judge him after he has had a run of 3 or 4 full games rather than a run of 10 substitute appearances.

Dave, you get pissed off with everything being Smith's fault in everybody's eyes and you are quick to point that out to people, but everybody is doing exactly the same thing with Vinnie.  At least Smith has had a few full games for us to judge him on. It just smacks of pot, kettle, black.

No, it doesnt.

Smith gets blamed for things that arent his fault - or things Lucas (or any other keeper) wouldnt have saved either.

Big Vince gets stick because he doesnt score goals because he doesnt score goals. He is a striker and even before last season Paynter still hit double figures both seasons for us.

Rory Fallon did the whole coming off the bench thing and managed to chip in with about 7 goals. Whilst its not ideal Big Vince minutes are slowly adding up - and still nothing.

On the subject of Pericard, his stats must be approaching Shaun Close levels.

Shaun for the uninitiated was nominally a striker who made 40+ appearances for 1 league goal..inevitably scored v O*ford.

Ardiles liked Shaun because he had decent touch and brought others into play....nevertheless if you're up front you must score some goals.

I've a mate who played a decent standard of non-league football, who was convinced Shaun was a better bet than Steve White in terms of team play...I thought otherwise, which made for a decent pub argument.

The crowd never really got on Shaun's case, there was more of a feeling, that if he got one he'd be up and running....eventually he scored on a memorable LC night v Darlo.....but it made bugger all difference. Fact was Shaun was a bit crap and I suspect Vince is too.

Pericard has only been a backup player for us anyway. Perhaps this will continue to be the case. If the fans' comments about Dossevi are to be taken at face value then he and Austin should be our main stikers and there is little need to worry about Pericard unless he suddenly needs to become the starting player up front. Let's not forget Ball is a lively player who will also cause defenses some problems too which means we have adequte backup up front, probably better than most of last year.

My cause for concern would be if Austin got sidelined for a spell, but I think that would be a concern even if our other strikers were scoring plenty of goals. Without an in form Austin last year we'd not have been nearly as good, even with Paynter knocking plenty in.

Team was doing well then....its when the team are losing that the crap players bare the brunt.
As for Pericard its time for the management to tell him what they want...a striker who along with Austin will score the goals we need...or a player just to meddle along not quite knowing what position he is playing....he drops to deep to hurt the opposition in my opinion.
