Dont know whether anyone has seen they sky sports preview for league 1. They've predicted us to finish 14th. Just shows what a small club we still are in some eyes!!

They haven't a clue outside the Prem. Walsall to finish above us!! I'd stick A hundred quid on that not happening.

yet they have walsall in 12th.

I think we all learnt along time ago, these things are utter bollocks. They are right that it wont be easy to finish as well as last season.

Just  goes to show Sky can't be assed outside of the championship, and use mystic meg to do the predictions.

From the outside, we're weaker than last season....having lost quite a few of last season's team, and as yet not replaced them with anything special, so it's a reasonable assumption we wont be as good.

We know it's better to be off the radar.

Sorry? What? [not at you Reg! ;)]

Oh well, can only be a good thing in staying with my prediction as we again fly under the radar and "over achieve"!

This table is so bad it's almost like they're done it randomly.

Southampton
Charlton
Sheffield Wednesday
Huddersfield
Brighton
Notts County
Brentford
Peterborough
Plymouth
Bournemouth
Bristol Rovers
Walsall
Carlisle
Swindon
Leyton Orient
Oldham
Franchise
Exeter
Colchester
Yeovil
Tranmere
Hartlepool
Rochdale
Dagenham & Redbridge

Let them continue putting us down.

I personally cannot see Charlton challenging, as they've sold their 2 best players. I cannot believe Brentford and Notts County are tipped ahead of us, and don't get me started on Brighton.

Absolutely Reg.

I've got to confess that I honestly don't know how we'll do this season. Not being pessimistic because I don't think we'll go down or anything but it's been a while since we followed up a good season with another really good effort!

Print it out and put it on the dressing room wall and all that.

14/1 to win the league though. definitely worth £20 on that

Sort of like Southampton last year, creditors get fucked and they spend almost 2M on Barnard and Lambert. Notts County should not be in L1 purely becuase they exceeded the wage cap in L2 and cheated to win promotion.

Fully agree Barry. Munto was reported of running £3m worth of debts at County. Their 'punishment' for breaking the salary cap was a transfer ban, which was meaningless in the end.

Pretty certain Southampton paid all their debts in full, bar the mortgage on the ground for which they agreed a settlement figure with the lender. They didn't do a CVA, the new owner paid out in cash when he took over.

Just been reading through a few teams and notice that SkySports seem to have no idea about any of the player's transfer fees. They state Huddersfield's Scott Arfield, for instance, was singed on a free, not the £400k we all heard about (probably from them). Then there's others like Calderon of Brighton, it says he was released, even though he was going to Saints but signed a new contract... It's very poor.

They've got us down for 17th, which I'd hope is bollocks.

A columnist in the Times yesterday reckoned you'd overachieved last season, and that we'd finish in the play-off places.

Are you still in the market for a striker then? As Reg says, from the outside you've lost Greer and Paynter and nobody has come in to fill their boots yet?

Not teasing by the way, just an honest question.

A lot of us think we're still to see the best of Vincent Pericard, who could still come good but needs to do it soon. We're also looking at a guy who has impressed on trial from Nantes, and there are rumours that we're interested in Tresor Kandol too.

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview

What was Pericard's problem last season? Form, fitness? Both?

Has he looked any better in pre-season? I see he scored a penalty in one match.

What strikers have you got other than Austin and Pericard? Do you play one up front?

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview
Post by: STFC Bart on Monday, August 2, 2010, 16:15:20
Think we are a striker and centre half away from being a side that should be up there challenging.

Feel we need an inexperienced head in central defence- morrison/lecs are good prospects but feel we need someone experienced back there.

As for Notts County- who knows. But the UK insolvency rules are so lax that it isnt fair that teams take the 10 point deduction then basically practically have a clean slate. Agree with Fitton the whole thing needs tightening up

We tend to play 2 up front, and it's looking like Austin and Pericard will be the pairing on Saturday. We also have Ball on loan from Man City but he looks more likely to play on the left. Other than that there's only Billy Bodin so we do need to get another one or two faces in.

It's hard to say what went wrong with Pericard. A bit of bad luck combined with only getting 20 minutes each week probably didn't help. Fitness also seemed to be a bit of a problem.

I think we'll be there challenging for auto. We might need an centre half, and if Dossevi signs, that'll sort out any striking problems.

I did predict we'll finish 5th last season, when interviewed by RS prior to the West Brom friendly last year, and I think we'll finish at least that this season.

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview
Post by: Bogus Dave on Monday, August 2, 2010, 16:42:54
Unless we sign another center back i think our success largely depends on lescinel/morrison. I'm not saying they won't, but i'm not expecting them to. Our defence was quite poor last season, and tbh it looks weaker now if anything.

Pericard will do his best I'm sure, but will he be the man to get 10-15 goals? I know we often said the same of paynter, Guess it just depends how optimistic you are about things.

It may be to say that do we actually need ferry and caddis, could the money have been spent in different areas of the pitch?

Deep down I'm not expecting us to do as well as last year, think we're looking at around 12th. Blind optimisim is a helluva lot more fun though, so here's to another play-off push

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview
Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, August 2, 2010, 16:57:21
Could the permanent signings of Ferry and Caddis be a statement of intent that may persuade Dossevi to sign?

I think I predicted us to finish 8th last year.

For our squad at the start of this season is looking far stronger than at the start of last season.
I think succes could depend on how well any current and future loans do this season.

Overall I predict 6th for us.

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview
Post by: Barry Scott on Monday, August 2, 2010, 17:18:07
If we sign Dossevi I'll be really pleased. Mainly because PL clubs were after him last season - which is probably for the wrong reasons.

I wonder whether after Brighton we'll be more or less optimistic? I'm almost scared that if we start well we won't have the fight we had last season. I'm getting all anxious now as the squad is now starting to look a bit special and if the defence comes together within a few games, we could be a real force.

Title: Re: Sky Sports League 1 preview
Post by: chalkies_shorts on Monday, August 2, 2010, 17:33:23
There is absolutely fuck all chance of Charlton finishing second. We are definitely top 6 this season. I've no doubt that if we don't sign a centre half and if JFL / Morrison don't step up we'll get one on loan. I'm more confident this season than I have been for many years. The squad is a shitload better this season than last. A centre half and a centre forward away from being an absolutely cracking squad. The latter is being worked on.

On the subject in hand, I think we've all come to realise over the years that virtually no time, thought or research goes into these things. "Ooooh, let's see...Swindon Town...play off hangover...leading scorer gone...club captain gone....hmmmmmm...14th it is! NEXT!"

They have us down to finish 5th, so they're not complete idiots.  :D

In all seriousness though, Walsall will be doing well to stay up. They could, apparently, go into administration within the next couple of months, and all it needs is a few teams into admin and the relegation places become a lot more competitive. I actually think Yeovil will suprise a lot of people this season, and come in the top 12. The signing of Adam Virgo just adds to that opinion, it didn't make it. They've quietly assembled a half decent little side down there, and if they can start well, I think they'll be alright.

Michael Poke (GK)
Inigo Calderon (RB)
Marcos Painter (LB)
Matthew Sparrow (CM)
Agustin Battipiedi (CM)
Cristian Baz (LM)
Ashley Barnes (FW)

And we're not quite done yet, either. All summer we've been after LuaLua, and another striker. According to certain people, we've got another centre back coming in to partner Greer. We didn't need major reinforcements this summer, just key players in certain parts of the team, which we've got.

Dont understand why Charlton are so highly rated. Bailey was their engine and they ran out of steam badly towards the end of last season. Id say their 3 best players left. I think they will struggle to make the play offs.

In that list I would say that Rovers, Swindon and Tranmere are underrated.

Hartlepool having a stinker has been comming a while.

And can someone please tell me why Notts County are so highly rated?

They have a rookie manager, and they have a big Munto debt to sort out.

Also, Peterborough. Yes, they have got Gary Johnson as manager, but the Chairman, who spent a lot of money when he bought the club, has hardly spent a penny over the last few years, due to the fact that the Chairman's business is Spanish timeshare, which has collapsed. They'll be lucky to finish mid-table.

By the way, in regards to us, let them think we just got lucky last year, but I don't think the surprise element will last long.

I think Peterborough look decent for this season. They've still got Boyd, McLean and Mackail-Smith, as well as Joe Lewis in goal, Zakuani at the back, Lee in midfield and Mendez-Liang in on loan from Wolves. I think we might be better than them this year but I expect them to be in the top 8,

Charlton are in serious trouble at the moment. Those who know what industry I'm in will know what I mean.

I couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread, but from the first two pages it seems to be "oh my, I can't believe sky don't care about the lower leagues and just pay lip service to them with half-arsed under-researched articles".  Shocking.

I might start a thread about bears' toilet habits - new research seems to suggest they've been seen heading towards the woods holding a magazine.

Passing judgement on threads without reading them is never a good idea...either read them or don't pass judgement.

The Guardian are currently running a poll on who will win the Div 1 title -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/poll/2010/aug/04/who-will-win-league-one-poll

If you scroll to all the comments at the bottom of the page there seems quite a few predicting a play-off berth for the Town, although a couple do suggest automatic promotion could be on the cards.

The current results -

  1.6%  Bournemouth
  2.3%  Brentford
  3.1%  Brighton & Hove Albion
  1.6%  Bristol Rovers
  0.9%  Carlisle United
  7.4%  Charlton Athletic
  0.9%  Colchester United
  0.7%  Dagenham & Redbridge
  1.5%  Exeter City
  1.2%  Hartlepool United
  4.2%  Huddersfield Town
  1.2%  Leyton Orient
  1.9%  Franchise
  2.8%  Notts County
  0.9%  Oldham Athletic
  2.3%  Peterborough United
  2.8%  Plymouth Argyle
  1.2%  Rochdale
  9.7%  Sheffield Wednesday
  45.5%  Southampton
  3.4%  Swindon Town

From the football league one

Quote
Charlton Athletic missed out on the chance to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt last season, as they were beaten in the Play-Offs by Swindon

That is the only time we are mentioned, perhaps they think we went up or something and are no longer in this division.

Absolutely.

Although I'd rather we were a stealth Trebuchet.

Cant say I'm offended by the various websites predictions for us - from the outside it looks like we've lost 2 of our best players and not replaced them in addition to another of our best players returning to his parent club and not being likley to return.  Hopefully we know better.

Like others I am mystified by Charltons high placing though. lost good players and no money to replace them. Had a ropey end to the season.

I have no idea tbh. As my original post clearly demonstrates I know next to nothing about advanced military radar avoidance (if that's what it is) technology.

Anyway I've been converted by BR's suggestion that we should be a stealth Trebuchet. Possibly with a couple of stealth ballistas on the wings. Medieval siege weaponry is where it's at

Re Peterborough, not strictly true. Can't remember exactly who they have signed but they got Grant McCann from Scunny who was excellent when Scunny were in League 1. Posh will be there or there abouts.

I'm trying to work out if this is a serious comment or a pisstake...

Quote
It's hard to see beyond brighton in the poll and in the league. if we get another striker, of decent quality (nathan tyson, sam vokes, reuben reid, simon cox, vassell, jan v of h) and a left winger (joel grant, kazenga lua lua, monkhouse) then will walk the league.

We have the best midfield and the best defence in the league this year. our fullbacks are near prem quality in calderon and painter. elliot bennet is the best winger in the league and gus is the best manager.

Everything is looking good for us and with our full backs over lapping will be playing footy most of the division won't understand. will pass everyone off the park and have them chasing shadows. teams won't no what hits them when gus brings us style hounds round!!!!!!

With our new stadium on the way and guaranteed capacity following will be pushing for the premiership in about 3 years. watch this space and see some real football this season. we pass so well and play such class football will teach most teams a footballing lesson!!! we will untouchable once we gets the players in and it will be scarey to watch!!!!!!!!!

Not bad. I think Caddis and Dossevi have the potential to be two huge signings for us, but you can be forgiven for overlooking that as very few fans of League One clubs will know anything about them. With those two, Rose and Prutton we look stronger than last year so hopefully we'll reach 6th place as a minimum.

I knew a little about Caddis. I must confess I know nothing about Dossevi but on further research he does look like he could be an important player. I also rate Prutton very highly. You'll be in the play-offs again, i'm sure of that.

From reading around most pundits and opinion seem to think we are merely mid table fodder.... Fair enough from the outside we have lost Bill and Gordy and no 'names' have replaced them, but surely these footballing experts can see we have a much stronger squad... well no, it seems not. Predictably they just look at the size of the club and prior reputation rather than the teams on the pitch. The one that i really don't understand is Charlton consistently being touted as promotion contenders, based on what? And Brighton.... again based on what? Having said that perhaps being under the radar a tad is a good thing...

Think our stealth trebuchet, got under the radar alright, but crashed and burned at an oasis near Benghazi.

It's reported that Luciano Gaucci has been shown the remains by al-Saadi Gaddafi, and is interested in resurrecting the carcass.
