Title: 1 in 7 chance of playing Oxford...
Post by: SCM on Saturday, July 31, 2010, 17:34:15
We've missed out on a bye into the second round of the Paint Pot Trophy. We'll now draw one of the following:

Aldershot Town

AFC Bournemouth

Exeter City

Oxford United

Southampton

Torquay United

Yeovil Town

Oxford at home,

Why's that? All that wait and then playing them in a meaningless match you mean? I suppose it would be a bit of a let down, but at least it'd give meaning to a pointless game.

The hardcore would turn out for it, but the casuals wouldnt. Attendance 5000 max. But the Police would probably insist on hundreds of rozzers, so the club would lose a lot of money.

After a big long break the tension really builds up, and it would be nice to get them back in a Cup game that would produce a decent crowd.

For what its worth I do think we are going to hit the ground running this season and if the Pox do get a trip to the CG they should be scared because it will be a massive step up for them.

2-0 up and Digby gets sent off..........lose 3-2,along time ago but seems to be one of those matches that still rankles with the older fans who were there.

But due to the fact you beat us so rarely, Poxfordshire calls a day/week/year of celebration every time you do. When we beat you, it's just routine, especially at the CG.

I don’t reckon it will be a sell out due to the JPT, maybe 8-10k. After experiencing the dreadful Wembley crowd I kind of hope it’s not – the extra’s will only complain that people stood up, and in some cases used swear words to describe their yellow friends. I still haven’t/won’t forgive the 20,000 day trippers who ruined the one day i’d been looking forward to for 17 years.

Back to the Pox.  If and when we do play the atmosphere will be fucking awesome – like watching football 20-30 years ago.  I don’t mean trouble, I just mean the edginess that’s created by playing your biggest rivals for the first time in eight years. Some will say leave your kids at home for this one, i’d say providing they don’t mind hearing a few obscenities, bring them along as they’ll remember the atmosphere for many years to come.

Of course there will be trouble, anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.  I’m sure I’ll get stick for this, but I really don’t care if we have to spend money on extra policing.  The fact football is so sterile nowadays is one of the reasons  alot of people don't go.  Games like this might actually bring a few people back who thought football died when The Premier League, all-seater soulless stadiums, Tim Lovejoy, Sky, Franchise, The Premier League, Sky, Spoony, choreographed goal celebrations, Tim Lovejoy etc were invented.

I don’t think there will be many other fans looking forward to the draw more than us and them.  Roll on 14 Aug.

See it is split into 4 sections then this season north east & west and south east & west so most of the early rounds should be fairly local, so assuming we get past round 1 and we don't draw pox perhaps we can meet them in a later round on our way to the final, although chances are they will draw aldershot and get beat in their other local derby

Having been to a number of Edinburgh derbies of which there are 4 every season and the atmosphere at everyone has been tinged with edginess, verging on nastiness, I would have to say that the fact the 2 teams haven't played in ages would only add to the atmosphere.

The feeling when Hearts beat Hibs at Easter Road was magical!

That’s the problem, edginess is never far from trouble, but given the option i’d take edginess any day of the week.

Swindon v Oxford is genuinely a big derby, not necessarily old firm status, but it is something recognised by other supporters.  I’ve read a lot over the past few seasons about our rivalry with others and what it means.  Anyone who says it’s City or Rovers (I won’t even give Reading the credit) has clearly never been to a pox game.  They are like no other.  I hate the idea of trying to be rivals with a team you know have much bigger rivals (i.e. City).  Oxford feel the same hatred and we will always be number one, when you add that to the fact we haven’t played for so long it will be a special game.

Unfortunately the stats just don't add up, to this being anything extra meaningful to the majority of Town fans.

Take the last time we played them at the CG, that season we also had Rovers, City and Reading, the attendance v Oxfrod was the lowest.

Or a season like 91/92 when we got them in the ZDS, a sort of JPT equivalent, 5800 at the CG a week later 7100 for Millwall in the LC.

We then played them in the league, and the crowd was lower than the season's average.

I'm not saying that there wont be a few knuckle draggers about...but the game has moved on, and they're very much in the minority.

Pox fans always talk a good game about coming down to the CG, but very few of them actually normally turn up.

They are as bad as the pikeys in that respect.

Reg is right.  I know I've posted on this before, so apologies for the repetition.  But Oxford means next to nothing to anyone who has been following us for less than 10 years - which is now a significant chunk of our support.  For the rest, they are an increasingly distant memory.

If we do play them again soon, the rivalry will reignite...of course it will.  But if we don't, it will continue to fade.  Oxford has not always been the #1 rivalry for us.  They became so during the 1960s and 1970s.  Unless they get another promotion soon, the Oxford rivalry will one day be nothing more than an story that old men mutter about in pubs.  The kids won't understand.

We're rivalry nomads because in recent years we've become victims of not having a rival league team in the same town and as a result of this Swindon Town will always happily be pretend rivals when needed :)

If Bristol Rovers are not in the same division as City, we'll be their rivals.
If Bristol City are not in the same division as Rovers, we'll be their rivals.
If Gillingham, Bournemouth, Cheltenham Town and co are needing attention, we'll be their rivals.

We've not played Reading at the CG for over eight years now and unless we draw Oxford in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy a decade will have past since Oxford visited the County Ground. That's a long time.

My old man always disliked Bristol City and Reading more than Oxford. Being raised in West Wiltshire, there were always more City and Rovers fans about than Oxford so there was more banter.

As for me, well, I dislike them all  :)

Of course you want to beat Oxfrod, in the same way you want to beat any of the clubs, there might be a particular reason for wanting to beat.  I'm sure many of our fans took more pleasure in doubling Leeds and Soton last season, than any win over Oxfrod.

After we got beat 4-0 by Rovers last season, I tried to explain to the Eastern European bird I was with at the time, why I couldn't eat the food she'd prepared, because I felt physically sick.

If we played the Scummers in the JPT at Swindon we'd only get 5-6k. A lot of people will stay away due to the shitload of trouble that would almost certainly occur plus the JPT is meaningless until you get to the Semi Finals.
I'd take beating those fuckers over a doulbe against Leeds or Soton any day - or in fact any other club. I hate them and always have and always will. As someone else said Robbo x 2 at the Manor - supporitng town doesn't get any better than that, particularly when you see Alexander's goal celebration in front of those retarded piss stains.

The first 2 rounds of the JPT really are dismal. Only chance of a decent crowd would be in the southern final or maybe semi final.

If we draw them in the first or second round you watch people start making excuses. Its too much trouble for a match with very little meaning.

Same goes for the scum. When the Pox last come down the bank wasnt half full. Not even near half full.

How the fuck are we going to sell out a JPT 1st or 2nd round game when we didnt sell out the Charlton PO semi final. As Reg said, Dreamland!

Fucking excellent post.  Basically it's gonna be a shit crowd watching a shit game of football in a shit round of the really shit cup.  To add to that there will be a shit load of trouble and we run the risk, small though it maybe, of getting done over which as we found out last time is hyper shit - Yet you'd rate a win against Pox above Leeds/Saints etc. I couldn't agree more.

I reckon they would bring a lot, probably the full allocation.  Whilst they've only brought 1-2k on the majority of previous occasions, they would want to prove a point.  Look at some of their attendances last season.  As a whole, and without sounding like a Leeds fan, this would mean a lot more to the average pox fan than the average town fan.

You live in a dream world....

Reg

I don't think i'm dreaming, certain smaller derbies are still reknown for their atmosphere/edginess.  Whilst attendances can be low due to families staying away, i'd say most town fans at Brighton on Saturday would consider going.

I've read a couple a three of your 15330 posts and recall you not being that bothered by the pox.  Out of interest do you have a number 1 most hated team?

Of course you want to beat Oxfrod, in the same way you want to beat any of the clubs, there might be a particular reason for wanting to beat.  I'm sure many of our fans took more pleasure in doubling Leeds and Soton last season, than any win over Oxfrod.

After we got beat 4-0 by Rovers last season, I tried to explain to the Eastern European bird I was with at the time, why I couldn't eat the food she'd prepared, because I felt physically sick.

She couldn't start to understand....

Are you sure she just wasnt a shit cook Reg!

We've been over this argument before. Oxford are our main rivals as far as I'm concerned and I think the vast majority of fans would agree with me. It's definitely number one in terms of potential for trouble.

I've also never been to a Swindon-Oxford derby. My only memory is that 1-0 FA Cup defeat, with that tosser Jefferson Louis scoring.

If we were to play them again, i'd prefer it to be a night game though, and in the latter stages of the JPT. The area final is two legs isn't it? That would give us two chances to beat the banana-arsed bastards! :D

4-1, 4-1.  Two years running...but the Turbo charged 2-0 at the Manor is still a favourite.  A two-legged area final would be great.

My first game watching the town was the 3-0 stuffing of the Pox at the CG in '89. The last time I went to the away fixture was at the Manor when Chalkie scored from a corner, we won 1-0 ( can't remember what year). I live to the west of Swindon and always viewed the Bristol/Swindon games with more interest to be honest.

Some of my best and worst moments supporting Town were against the Pox. Losing 5-0 there fucked me off for ages despite the unbelievable battering we gave the cunts after the game - and in fact, before hand. Under McMahon our record there was shit beyond belief. I remember winning there after we gave them a 2 goal lead in 1990 and really taking the piss afterwards. I also remember winning at home 1-0 in 76/77 and seeing one of Swindon's finest jump off a van roof into the middle of a train load of the cunts on County Road signalling an almighty scrap.
The best, however was the 3-2 win with the smokebomb thrown from the Town End - good the beat them that way and afterwards was absolute carnage.

I had a healthy hatred of Bristol Shitty, before we even played a league game v Headington.

Interestingly different cook....you had to be creative in a communist country, make a little go a long way...

I did need to provide education on how to do an English roast dinner....
