Title: Karl Pilkington
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 17:55:46
Another new discovery for me. Can't remember the last time until now that I had such a belly laugh.

Is he the one who does the podcast with Gervais and Merchant?

I used to think he wan't very funny.  Then I bothered to listen to him.  Now I would seriously think about doing some quite naughty things with him.  He's ace.

I think he's funny, but I am sceptical if he's for real.

The podcasts were really funny though, I like all three of Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington, and Ricky Gervais' laugh has me in stitches alone.

I reckon I must be the only person in the world that fails to see the humour in Pilkington and the Gervais podcasts.

I tried the podcasts and just didn't get them. Sounded like three blokes talking shit about nothing in particular and totally devoid of any humour. The TV series was even worse as it requires twice the effort (eyes and ears) and still isn't funny.

To answer the question as to what else Pilkington does, wasn't he a radio producer before he found fame as a moron?

Karl Pilkington has a head like a fucking orange!!

He's hilarious, some of the stuff he comes out with is fucking stupid but genius at the same time.
I get the impression however that he's alot more intelligent than he makes out. i think when he started out
on the radio (XFM) it was legit but then it was slightly scripted as it got more popular but who cares.

cant wait for his tv show "karl pilkinton, seven wonders of the world" starts in august i think.

 check it out:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI_m65jaY1E

I haven't seen that trailer before. Thanks. Really looking forward to that show. They've changed the name now tho. I prefer Karl Pilkington's Seven Wonders of the World but it's now called Karl Pilkington: An Idiot Abroad.

Seems a bit stupid how they've subtitled everything he says in the trailer too. Can Americans not cope with a Manc accent? Doubt it's like that in the actual show tho.

By the way I've listened to almost everything they've done together and IMO although it's pretty much all great, the XFM shows, especially series 2-4, are the best.

You can get a complete torrent off the pirate bay. http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5645203/The_Ricky_Gervais_Show_-_Complete_Audio .

Or if you just want the stuff that's supposed to be free you can download all the XFM stuff which was never copyrighted  and a few other bits here.

http://www.pilkipedia.co.uk/wiki/index.php?title=Download:List

Note: The Steve show is just Steve Merchant and doesn't have Karl or Ricky on it.

Here's another newer trailer for An Idiot Abroad. No subtitles on this one. Dunno if the person who uploaded to ebay added them to the last one.

Why does he even have to be on it?

Cos he's so funny and famous and wonderful and brilliant and lots of other superlatives.

At least he thinks he is. In reality he's a talentless twat in front of the camera.

Don't you like him in The Office?

It was good at the time. But now it's obvious that it wasn't actually brilliant acting, he was just being himself and he's played every role since in exactly the same way. Which makes it look shit in retrospect. Plus Steve Carell plays it better in the US.

Title: Re: Karl Pilkington
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Thursday, September 23, 2010, 22:14:13
That doesn't make sense. If It wasn't acting and Gervais was being himself how can Steve Carell play it better?

They do though.

The Frenchies do good frogs legs, caked in Garlic as one would expect.

In this neck of the woods they deep fry small ones that one eats whole. They are good to play with because of the poses they are pulling. A friend of mine once even made props for them and made little scenes, we were rather bored at the time.

Don't you like him in The Office?

And there's the rub..The Office IMO, was abolutely fantastic. I loved it and it worked on many levels. As it turned out, Ricky Gervais was pretty much playing himself but that didn't matter, it was brilliant and nothing like it had ever been seen before.

However, I think Gervais' huge popularity is very much a case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. It seems to me that just because The Office was brilliant, people think that every single thing he has done since is brilliant. If he had never done The Office, he would not have gotten anywhere near the acclaim he has done for all the subsequent stuff he has come out with which, in my ever so humble opinion, is dog shit.

Lee Hughes' spastic fucking dance he insists on doing after every goal makes me want to stab people in the eye but I'd rather watch that than Karl fucking Pilkington.

Each to their own though.

Exactly. It's why I had to turn it off. What he was howling at in that over the top manner, was often no more than worthy of a smile. I loved watching The Office, Extras, Animals and Politics (not Fame or the 11 o'clock show) but nowadays I find him very hard to watch and he almost comes across to me as a bit desperate for more fame or something.

This is what he is all about, it is all black and white, he can't deal with anything else. I first became aware of him on RG podcasts in 2006 and it was laugh out loud funny but as usual Gervais brought it mainstream, milked it and I found it less and less funny

I just find it abhorrent that two of the most high-profile British celebrities people think of in America now are Ricky Gervais and Piers Morgan.

There goes 400 years of work portraying us as a reserved, sensible nation with great dignity.

Ricky Gervais vehicles don't require Pacino-esque acting ability and that's a part of why Gervais/Merchant have done so well over the last 15 years.

Pilkington, in my opinion, is without a doubt a television alter-ego akin to Stephen Colbert's character in the United States.

Karl Pilkington is probably a 'character' in reality but some of the stuff he's done from the radio show to present is clearly staged (e.g. his diary from the early podcasts).

I don't watch 'An Idiot Abroad' and I don't think Gervais will ever get close to The Office but fair play to them, he's made the absolute most of his limited ability and used what's around him to create further success.

I remember Gervais being questioned on Karl Pilkington and if it's staged. He said something like, I wish I could write a character like Karl. I think it is mostly natural, but he definitely plays on it a bit.

I love Gervais though. The Office, Extras, Idiot Abroad, The Ricky Gervais show, love them all! Well I wasn't a massive fan of that Life's Too Short one with Warwick Davis, but generally I am a fan. Oh, except for his films, they are generally pretty poor.

I thought his stand-up was very good personally.

I do say thought as in past tense deliberately though. The guy has two tricks up his sleeves.... Religion and fat people. That's about it. As an atheist I think a lot of his stuff is/was funny and I love taking the piss out of religion. He also makes some good points that I agree with but the bloke really needs to change the fucking record. Occasionally at least.

I also find Gervais irritating. Fuck having somebody like that sat at your table in the pub.

All that asides, he has done a lot of great stuff. Or, perhaps more to the point, he and the people he has worked with (such as Merchant) have done some great stuff.

I cannot remember which one it was but watched about 15 minutes of one of his stand up DVD's until realised that all 4 of us had stopped watching because it wasn't very good.

Some of the stuff was almost borderline 1970s Jim Davidson, I.e. let's take the mickey out disabled people because they are different. If one of the old school comedians had done it people would be up in arms,  but because he was flavour of the month it was apparently great?

I agree he had done well by working with some very funny/clever people oh and by being David Brent which I suspect didn't take much acting.
