Title: Milwall V Swindon Town official matchday thread
Post by: deltaincline on Friday, May 7, 2010, 23:20:41
Fucking long day ahead. Cars, Trains and no doubt the odd gauntlet to be run during our visit to Laandan.

3 points for us with Trollies' boys sticking it to Dirty fucking Leeds up in Yorkshire will do me.

COME ON!!

Promotion odds:

Leeds         2/9
Millwall        6/4
Charlton        2/1
Swindon        9/4
Huddersfield   11/4

As KOT didn't start the thread, Swindon's odds have drifted out slightly.

Train tickets have been picked up, beer has been bought, match tickets are in my wallet.

All that needs collecting now is that 2nd spot and a place in the Championship.

Im not going to predict the score as ive never got it right, but heres hoping for a Town win and for Lidls and Rovers to draw.

CMON YOU REDS!!!!!

Cracked open a beverage and wacked on The Shawshank Redemption in hope i'll drift off.

Exactly.

However I look at it, I just can't see Leeds slipping up. And it will be tough to win at the New Den. And so I expect to be in the playoffs, and I'm not nervous at all!

1-1 today.

Just had to change all my plans last minute - was planning to drive up to Morden and jump on the Northern Line to London Bridge, then on to South Bermondsey.  Just found out the Northern Line is closed between Morden & Kennington so had to find a new route - bearing in mind my other half has the Sat Nav today so i need to go somewhere I know!

Still buzzing for the game though!!

Late shout I know, but my STFC loving mate has just been turned away from Gatwick due to Volcanic Ash over Lisbon. What was he doing booking a holiday over the last weekend of the season? F*ck knows, I think he may have learning difficulties, but the point is he now needs a ticket.

Can collect from wherever you'll be around London / the ground.

PM Me! Cheers,

As people have said, we've nothing to lose. If we end up in the play-offs we can be proud of the team and the whole club for giving us a great season so far. If things do go our way today it'll be ace and skill! I might actually shed some man tears.

Then raise the scarlet standard high.
Within its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son.

Lets hope we have 11 men out there today.

Swindon goal: A dream start for the Robins... Millwall fail to clear a free-kick pumped into the box and Danny Ward volleys into the bottom corner. Swindon are second and going up, as things stand.

Argh. Just in from walking the dog, with the great news that we were winning. By the time I got to the lounge the penalty had been given.

Still, we were back up to second for a minute there.

We can do this!

Millwall goal: A nice quiet start at the New Den. Lewis Grabban bursts through and is bundled over in the box by Jonathon Douglas. Steven Morison sends the keeper the wrong way from the resulting penalty and Leeds are back in second place.

Gradels a real nasty piece of work, there was a massive punch up and lidls fans are really getting on their fans backs by the sound of it, Rovers are playing pretty well actually and not giving in to them, its a good game to watch.

What an afternoon of football. I feel completely deflated, which shouldn't be the case because it has been a fantastic achievement to make the play-offs. At least Leeds winning means we can have no regrets about not winning today because it wouldn't have made a difference.

With Lids winning, Charlton in the playoffs I think is the best outcome.  Millwall and Huddersfield are going to have to make long trips.

Losing 3:2 to Millwall with an o.g. and a penalty, no problem.

Of all the possibilities in the play-offs i'm happiest with Charlton. They seem to have found a bit of form lately, but didn't impress me at all when we played them at the CG.

The Valley is not an intimidating place to go and with 3,000 swindon fans there for the second leg we will outsing them and roar the lads to Wembley.

I'm not going to dwell on today, looking forward to Friday already.

This is strange, if we had won at Millwall it would have had a real gut wrencher, today.  Also, a play-off game against Huddersfield I don't think would be a better option.

it was a pen but he wasnt going anywhere the OG was unlucky and then the 3rd was a deflected shot which looped over lucas.

That is only applicable if they finished in 5th or 6th and had to play at home first, as as they away in the first leg it doesn't apply.

Charlton would only have to play at home on Friday night if they finished 5th or 6th (because of the FA Cup final on Saturday). The same would have applied to Millwall. As they have finished 4th it is irrelevant (i think!!).

No, the FL link makes it clear that to avoid Charlton playing at home the same day as the FAC Final, they would switch the game to the Friday. Since they avoid the Sat anyway, it's as originally planned.

Post by: DiV on Saturday, May 8, 2010, 16:41:56
Well its done now.

We made the worst possible start by going 1-0 up!!!

It meant Millwall had to come at us and they did.

As for the penalty, I don't know. They only showed one replay and I was watching JFL because I thought it was him that gave it away not Douglas.

At 1-1 Millwall had the momentum and had most of the play but didn't look too dangerous.

Then Greer puts one in his own net. Fuck knows what he did, he had no one around him and was under no pressure. Such a shit goal to give away.

Then Greer dives infront of a Morison shot and deflects it past Lucas. Decent shot but I do think it was the deflection that took it over Lucas.

3-1 down - a penalty and two own goals.

We pushed a bit more, got another and that was about it.

Millwall probably edged it without looking that dangerous. Probably got a bit of luck with all their goals.

Our sound went out so couldn't hear the crowd. But nice to see Kevin Amankwaah come on. After the predicted bottling.

Whilst we lost the game, I think we come out of the game better.

I can't speak for everyone but I'm much happier with Charlton than I would be Huddersfield.

Leeds won so certainly to us this result wasn't important.

Ref total homer. Everything went against Paynter.

Bring on Charlton.

Can't be too disappointed with today. We went into it with an outside chance of going up and in the end it was taken out of our hands anyway.

Cracking goal from Ward, then there was the penalty. Douglas definitely fouled the bloke but I thought Dougie was fouled in the build up. As for the OG, it was a good ball across and greer did have to deal with it since there was somebody coming in at the far post - unfortunately he got it stuck between his feet. Millwall's 3rd was a tad lucky, and Paynter's was a clever flick. I was amazed that there was no pointless pitch invasion at the end, although Millwall's (even) less bright fans did manage to get on the pitch after they took the lead. Well 'ard.

Bring on Charlton. The semis are bang in the middle of my exams so I'm not sure if I can go - might just try and make it to the away leg.

I thuoght Millwall were the better side aided by the officials who gave us jack all. Their centre halves had Paynter and Austin in their pockets. I can't quite understand why we gave them so much space down our left - was Sheehan continually out of position or was Ward shirking his defensive duties.
A couple of beers in the All Bar One before the game went down well and a very well organised exit on the train. I'm happy with Charlton in the play offs - lts hope I'm saying the same in 9 days.

Enjoyed that. New places, new faces.

Obviously it became a bit irrelevant once we found out Rovers had Rhys Evans in goal.

From where I was on the right hand side it was a very drunken Swindon following. Which made for a red hot atmosphere at some points and then subdued again.

Great goal by Wardy. Looking at the pics on the getty and the official site what comes through is the team spirit weve got now. I dont think we could have got two better loan players than Danny Ward and Simon Ferry, 100% team players who have given us everything theyve got. Great pic of Ferry looking ecstatic that Ward has volleyed us 1-nil up.

I think Im the same as anyone in that Charlton were the prefered opponents and thats what weve got. But youve got to be careful what you wish for. You cant underestimate them, we need to do the business now.

I think it was a case of Ward not really giving him enough cover, but that's probably because we were going all out for the win, rather than anything to do with laziness

Got to say, I was very impressed with the police and stewards there. The way the police get the away fans into the ground and out is done with Military precision.

The stewards were also alright, not once did they tell anyone to sit down and were genuinely helpful.

Policing was good, apart from the stupid set-up involving the SAS coaches.  We were told that we'd be stopping in Blackheath for the police to check the coaches and they be escorted to the ground.  Instead, we were left at the side of the road for over half an hour, with a load of coppers standing around.  Finally we were let go with a police van in front and about 6 normal motorists in between, complete waste of time!

Agree with most of the points already mentioned about the game as a whole.  Thought Greer looked a bit dodgy at times and after we conceded the penalty, the defence was an absolute shambles for about 15 mins.   Charlie seemed to be tired and off the pace, which is a worry, as we need his sharpness in the play-offs.

I would be inclined to play Amankwahh instead of Darby, as he has far better attacking ability.  Darby went on a great run at one point and then didn't seem to know what to do with the ball and we ended up losing it.  Amankwahh would probably have gone for goal.  O'Brien looked like he could be a decent pair of fresh legs, hopefully he can stay fit.

I reckon we need a 2 goal cushion from Friday to take into the away leg to help steady us.  Come on Town, we can do this!

Title: Re: Milwall V Swindon Town official matchday thread

Some of those Millwall fans were straight out of central casting - we were over to the left and there was one who looked like an extra from Minder, one who must have been in every "When hooligans attack" scene in the Bill ever, but top prize went to the guy who sauntered over to the barrier, made a slashing gesture across his throat, then did a full-on "cockney roll" all the way back to where he had been stood. If he could have done, he'd have licked himself, he was so chuffed with himself. We were in stitches.

So from what's on the OS, I assume the away tickets are on sale from tomorrow as well? Although I also assumed they wouldn't have them in yet - maybe they'll just post them to us when they get them?

The question was would he stay if the Town went up.  Paynter really didn't answer the question, just said that he has enjoyed his time with Swindon and he just had to sit down with the chairman.

He also mentioned that the ref gave him nothing, but a slight nudge the other way was an immediate free kick.

I can help you - Nick Watkins said (on the radio after today's game) that he was going to be bringing the Charlton tickets back to Swindon with him tonight, therefore they're confident that the away tickets will also be on sale tomorrow. Looks like voucher C is required for the away ticket, fuck it - might as well just drive in to the CG tomorrow & get both together.

Paynter confirmed fuck-all about his future plans - he was just waffling, "Eeeehm....it's gone well this season.....eeeeehm I'd like to stay......eeehm me & the Chairman need to sort it out...." You can't blame him if he's looking to cash in. It's the age-old argument between us as fans just wanting the best for STFC, against & us fans being honest/grown-up & putting ourselves in their shoes.

Can of stella on the train at 9-30am.

Trains and tube to London Bridge and a session in the George.....Crystal Tips and her Shaperone turned up and had a couple. >:(

Cannot understand that i can get on a train at 2-30pm and miss the fucking kick off and goal, which i managed to see on the reply by the burger stand under the stand.

In the end it didnt matter - we could of won 30 nil and it wouldnt of mattered, so bring on the play offs! :D

My pleasure, Paul.

Few things to say today. First thing's first what the fuck were the police playing at? I and many others got on the tube at 2:35 expecting to make the game in plenty of time but the police decided they wanted to take their Time for no reason and delay us leaving thus resulting in us missing Ward's goal. What a joke. Then they rush back on the train after the game. WTF is all that about?

On the performance front sadly it was't good enough today. Still shite at the back, gifting them 2 goals, no passion, no commitment. Did any of them really give a shit today? I'm pissed off that I spend over £50 on a trip to this game for  a performace that was worse than the Lib Dems's election results. Utter garbage. I'll be at both legs of the play-offs but on today's showing we haven't even got a chance of winning them. Oh joy, onto next season. What a load of wank.

Thought Greer looked a bit dodgy at times , the defence was an absolute shambles for about 15 mins.   Charlie seemed to be tired and off the pace, which is a worry, as we need his sharpness in the play-offs.

I would be inclined to play Amankwahh instead of Darby, as he has far better attacking ability.

This is what Ive been saying since Colchester away.

Not a great performance really, tough place to go mind but recent form when under pressure is a bit of a worry.

Off to queue at the County Ground in a bit.Going to have to make my mind up about going to Charlton now, need to book time off work before the first leg result is known.

Virtually all Millwall fans appear to be Stone Island wearing hooligans.

When we arrived in the coaches, even the women and kids were doing cut throat gestures at us!

I can't say South Berdmondsey is the type of place I would like to live!

Enjoyed the day out though, and Wardy's goal was lovely. At that moment, I thought we were going up.

Can someone tell me, what is the song they play when they come out and when they score?

A couple in the bunch of grapes then onto The Market Porter....what a brilliant market that is..real old school.
Nice to see a few Teffers in the pub.....Ironside baught me a drink,seemed a nice chap!..but then i was nicely mellow by then.
As for the match the atmosphere was incredible...thaught Sheehan played well though the whole team looked abit jaded,at least they have a week to get rested.
Had a beer in the Prince Regent on the way back to Paddiington...and toasted Stubbs the painter in the old Marleybone churchyard ware he is buried....in fact that old church courtyard preserved as a garden of remembrance for past greats buried there was a nice piece of tranquility in a day of lovely mayhem.
Well done Town.

Ha ha, yes I can confirm that The Flash had a truly drunken day out.  Nice new hat - pity we didn't get to throw it on the pitch in celebration of promotion and see Paynter dance about in it.  We will have to wait for The Valley to see that.

Didn't notice any problem with the Old Bill though I offered one a 69er and he wasn't having any of it.

I'm going into these play-off games positive - have to.  We didn't play well yesterday, but it's clean slate now.  Amankwaah surely has to play, again made a difference yesterday no disrespect to Darby.   Front two didn't gell, but their quality will come through against Charlton.
I'm going home and away no matter what.

I usually aim to get in the ground so I can see the start of the game, but miss the stupid handshake. But it was obvious that you needed to get into this one early. We got the train down at 13.50 ish from London Bridge, and it was already absolutely packed out.

There is only 1 way to get to Millwall, and the overline trains are not as regular or as long as they might be for a 20,000 attendance at the New Den. Anyone leaving it until half 2 leaving London Bridge only has themselves to blame. Particularly as the facilities at the New Den are pretty good. Its easy to get a beer, lots of TV screens etc.

As for the cut throat gestures, down the right hand side, they were all doing them at the start of the game. Then a big ish mob of Swindon lads turned up, and guess what? Didnt see 1 more cut throat gesture. Just a bit of jovial banter about fat blokes. Funny that.

By the way, weve got to sort our support out if we ever want to get some decent support going in these big games.

The fast chanting seemed to come out of a group of younguns in the Town end about 3 years ago, and like a virus it spread to our away support. In big games, you have to keep going with the chanting, otherwise you just never get enough fans singing to make a difference. If people speed up the clapping it all dies out.

I dont understand why we havnt been able to sort it. Its an embaressment to the club and supporters of other clubs pick up on it.

Shoot me down but I thought that was a terrible performance.Dont get me wrong this season has been fantastic but anyone who saw any positives from that game have steamed up rose tinted specs.Our top 4 performers of this campaign(Paynter,Douglas,JPM and Greer)had by far their worst performances of the season that I've personally witnessed.We were a shambles at the back,Lucas was almost as dodgy as their keeper(why didn't we test him more?)we were guileless in mid field(apart from Ferry 1st half) and toothless up front.Millwall were sharper,more tenacious in every department,more incisive with their passing and far more threatening up front.I admire people's optimism but you gotta be realistic we were awful.The good thing is form going into the play-offs is worth little when the games start so hopefully we can turn it around.

Lucas 5
Darby 5
Greer 4
LJF 4
Sheehan 5
JPM 5
Douglas 4
Ferry 6
Ward 6
Paynter 4
Austin 4
Amankwah 6
OBrien 4
Nouble 4

That's the big question isn't it? (re. Adje's post) Do we carry our mediocre late-season form into the play offs or can Danny get them to forget all that and take the attitude that everyone is starting again from scratch?

Let's hope it's the latter.

I just hope we absolutely go for it on Friday and throw caution to the wind because if we're too cautious we'll lose any way. Amankwa simply has to start in place of Darby. Who starts out of those two will dictate the whole tempo and dynamic of the game IMO.

wEll so maybe Adje is right.  I reckon Wilson didn't want to lay into the players too much yesterday afterwards, probably no point in doing that at this point.  We didn't play well, but we have to move on otherwise it's clear what will happen.

 Have to say also Adje was a picture of suffering yesterday, lives and breathes this stuff you can tell.  It's definitely difficult to enjoy it all, maybe when we look back we'll ltalk about how much fun it all was (?)

It's a lottery now and there's no point looking at previous fixtures for in depth analysis and guidance. Hell, this is the system that could see Blackpool reach the Premier League.

We just have to make sure we go to The Valley with some kind of advantage.

Town probably have the smallest squad and it COULD go against us. I'm excited that we are the club that could keep mighty Charlton Athletic in L1 for another season.

Let's look forward and bring on the Addicks.

Huddersfield have surprisingly used the least players in the league, with 24.

We've used 30.

Although from that Ritchie, Peacock, Marshall, Nouble, Smith and Morrison have played 10 times or less.

Revell, Hutchinson, Obadeyi and McNamee no longer at the club.

Ward, Sheehan, Darby, Pericard, Nouble and Austin recruited during the season

Better team won on the day. Douglas must be kicking himself today as there was no need to make that challenge. If only we could have held on that little bit longer I reckon we would have settled down.

Not all Millwall fans are bad. Met some real decent ones in the Pub (Barrow Boy and Banker) near Tower Bridge. They were full of praise for Town and were saying Millwall's problem is mainly down to the locals who mostly don't go to the games but hang around looking for trouble.
You could see them during the game outside on one of the corners. They were saying best getting to the ground early as the locals will wait and pick of anyone arriving late without Police protection.

Any other Club in the league would issue banning orders to some of those fans getting on the pitch however I was informed that the stewards are scared of the crowd and consequences. Only could happen at Millwall.

Impressed with the ground and policing. I guess more away fans have been made to feel safer. It's nothing compared to the Old Den.

Even their shirts have a relevant motto, "We fear no foe".....class.

Then you get all the Dell Boys giving it let em cam, let em cam, let em cam, let em cam all darn to the Den.

Nail, head, hit. We've used quite a few players but that's due to turnover rather than having a large squad. Thankfully the changes were largely for the better and they've got us where we are. As others have said, the play-offs just come down to two/three games - everything else goes out of the window. Unfortunately for us, last time that included our luck.

I wish we could get an atmosphere going in the DRS but i'm sure i'm not alone in feeling like i've grown an extra set of arms whenever i start chanting?

Changes from the Millwall game should be, Cuthbert instead of Lescinal (STAY GOAL SIDE OF THE MILLWALL STRIKER!!) & Amankwaah in place of Darby.

No we had a god negotiator, who knocked the company down from around £300 to around £180. I think there was around 15 of us who put in, so pretty cheap really.

What company did you use? I've been thinking about a flag if we get to Wembley.

I'll find out, i do know it was in Scotland, but still only took around 5 working days from delivery of design, to actual delivery of the flag.

The other thing about that sort of thing is you do lose that connection between the noise and whats going on on the pitch.

Theres nothing better than a good tackle, or a player taking on his man, and the crowd going mad and lifting the roof off. They dont have that abroad.

I feel that by no longer publicly sharing the details of 'the most heroic retreat since Dunkirk' I shall add to the mysticism that will enthrall and inspire Town fans for generations to come.

Or I can't be arsed to go over it again. One of the two.

Have just ordered my own flag off of this guy, in readiness for Wembley....hope he is kosher!

Not that I go on about this at all or anything but maybe just maybe my three STOLEN flags will reappear at wembley.
