Title: Wycombe wanderers V Swindon Town official matchday thread
Post by: nochee on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 03:32:05
Im starting this one as nobody else has.

Swindon to win this game 1-3. Austin, Austin & Paynter. Wycombe get a late consolation for their efforts. Swindon fans sing their hearts out and spur the boys on to a well deserved victory and Dave buys me a pint for making me walk.

Think this could well be a 1-1 draw with Paynter netting.

We WILL win this.

2-1.

Paynter and Austin scoring for us and Revell Revell netting for them.

Don't know about the score ... but I think it's time for the "Douglas screamer" - though I'd settle for waiting for the 120th minute of the play-off final.

We will win this one because there will be less pressure on the team away from home.

McGovern to score from a free kick to show Sheehan how it is done.

I don't like the prospect of facing Revell, we all know he's a mixed bag (cue groans).

Otherwise fairly confident of a victory. A close one though, 3-2.

With regards Revell...could he possibly be the first person to play for us and against us for 2 different clubs in the same season?

Second is still the target but I wouldn't mind seeing Wilson (dare I say it) tinker with the line-up a little bit today. Get some worth out of the current bench players who could prove crucial come Play-Offs (if we miss out on second).

Wycombe are in good form and fighting for their lives - I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't win - [sarcasm]I eagerly await the anarchy if we fail to win.[/sarcasm]

I expect us to win. Austin to score more than one and Wycombe to not score.

I dreamt about today's results the night before last and dreamt MK beat Lids 3-2 and Millwall also lost. I have just placed a bet on that Lids result at silly odds. :)

If we win do Wycome go down? Or do other results have to happen aswell.

All the pressure on them today. We have secured a play-off place which is beyond anyones expectations for this season, we can play with no pressure. Hopefully we can back to form toaday and a win would keep us in the hunt for 2nd.

If we win do Wycome go down? Or do other results have to happen aswell.
From the BBC Ups and Downs page http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8570219.stm:
Quote
Southend will go down if they lose away at Oldham on Saturday. A draw for the Shrimpers won't be enough if Exeter get a point at home to Charlton, while even a win wouldn't save them if Exeter, Gillingham and Leyton Orient all won. This combination of victories would also see Wycombe down if they lost at home to Swindon.

to break the conceding first hoodoo.

I think we need to break that mental hoodoo before we go into the playoffs as I am 99% certain that it plays on the players minds as well.

I feel a bit bad not going to this as it's so close but paying for a season ticket as well as travel/match ticket for Millwall, money has been a bit tight to say the least.

I'm going for a scrappy 1 nil win to us.

He wasn't at their home game last week either. He's only still officially manager because he has a 5 game touchline ban so he's seeing that out before he gets a new job.

we have bottled automatic though, we got it into our own hands, lost it again and havent won since.

Of course I'm happy with the play offs but that doesnt gloss over the distinct lack of bottle.

Dissappointing but maybe we can come out of the traps firing on all cylinders, the game is only half over still 45 minutes+ to play.

The players just need a bit more faith in their own ability, we are a better team than then even if we arent winning, theres still time.

Yeah, heard that before recently.

The only decent attacking option we have on the bench is Big Kev - a right back.

One week in there out of god knows how many weeks of a campaign. We were never, ever going to cling on to that points lead for the 6 or 7 games that were remaining. If we were at one stage something like 4 points ahead I'd agree - but there was never significant daylight.

Oh and it's not over, yet.

You didn't, the players did.  They are professionals and are coached to play it safe in injury time in the first half away from home with the score level.  Luggy used to go on about doing the smart things like keeping possesion with seconds to go.

I suppose they are thinking of games like Colchester, Exeter, Walsall and all the games where we went behind and went on to lose 3-0,4-0, 5-0 etc

That run will have to come to an end at some point though. Might as well be today.

What I mean is that its been an unexpected pleasure to have the Town buzzing around the top of the tree. Our form has deserted us when (against expectations) it looked like we had a chance of 2nd spot. Millwall and Leeds pulling away now make it look like we are playoff bound. Out of the playoff teams it looks like we are the team most off form and we are likely to have to play Charlton - who we couldn't beat twice when we were 'on song'. If we were to lose in the play-offs (which I hope we don't) it will be such a disappointment.

Basically, miles below where we want to be.  There were five "Roy of the Rovers" out there, 90 yard passes aren't going to do it.  Not defending at all well, collectively.  Slow reaction to the penalty save, too slow all round.   Not done and dusted, yet, will be prepared for slip ups.

Pericard slight strain.

I am pretty sure that Sheehan is not available for the play offs as his 3 months loan finishes the day after the end of the season.

Sheehan isn't on a 3 month loan he's here until the end of the season like Ward and Ferry.

Ritchie was the only loan signing that wouldn't have been able to play in the playoffs, all the others were season long loans or came here within 3 months (or whatever the limit is) of the end of the season (including the playoffs).

Billy on.

Didn't perform. Wycombe wanted it more.

Need hard work, it's between the ears, lads disappointed, one of those games.  No player goes out not wanting to do their best.

Lack of composure at 2:2, rushing things, Wycombe could have won it with one on ones against Lucas.

Paynter almost stated that auto is totally blown, seemed totally down and depressed.

I'm feeling calm.  Disappointed 2nd is now gone (barring a highly improbable set of resultsnext week.)  Yes, we're wobbling.  But we've not gone to pieces.  We're drawing games...not losing badly.  And we do have time to pull ourselves out of the mini-slump before the play offs start.

Danny knows now to start getting us ready for the play offs.  Preparation starts here.

Totally agree, the worst case scenario was losing out on second during the last game.  Wilson all but said it's over for auto, so it's all about preparation. He seemed pissed off about Pericard's slight strain.

Although he won't publicly say it Wilson knows that 2nd place is very unlikely. What he wants
and is now demanding from the players, are two good performances and getting back into the
good habits that have served us well this season. He believes that this,it would then stand us in
good stead for the play-off's.I happen to agree with him!

results.

We are not going to win another game if we lose discipline which was basically Danny's complaint.  Danny on the radio seemed to be spitting blood, and Paynter sounded like there had already been a good bollicking.

Danny said he is looking for good performances not necessarily victories, changes hopefulyfor Saturday.  The bench especially Pericard and Noouble have to be given the opportunity and need to take it.  It's time to rest the jaded midfield players, midfield was today a major complaint from Danny.

Nobody seemed to mention that Wycombe were just about relegated with the draw today.

Possibly.  If you accept that it's now play offs or nothing, our chances of promotion are approx 1 in 4 (ie more likely we won't go up than we will.)  If we don't, I think we're well set for next year.  Let's enjoy the play offs...as much as it's possible to enjoy the play offs.

Still were in the same position as before. Am i right in thinking that if the table stays the same at the end of the season, we will get Charlton in the playoffs?

Secondly how was the white horse if any body went there?

It's not 1 in 4, you only play 2 opponents, so 1 in 3, but of course the chances of winning aren't as simple as 1 in 3.

With random results,

Probability of beating the first opponent = 0.5

Probability of beating the second opponent = 0.5

Probability of winning the play offs = 0.5 X 0.5 = 0.25 which is 1 in 4.

4 teams, 1 is going to win, 3 are not going to win, 1 in 4.

The assistant referee has the job of being in line with the goal line and determining whether the ball has crossed the line.  The ref is not going to overrule the assistant ref when he is not himself positioned to look along the goal line.

Just got back. Ref was a cunt, as was the lino. Austin was well onside for the disallowed goal (I was inline with Austin). Central midfield wasn't at their best and Cuthbert looked very low on confidence and didn't play well. Marshall was good and when Manky came on he changed the game along with Easton. JPM, as has often been the case this season, was good. He did little wrong and imo was our best player.

It's all gone a bit hoofball and panicky though, which i find very scary.

Title: Re: Wycombe wanderers V Swindon Town official matchday thread
Post by: Batch on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 18:39:58
Also back now. Not sure the Austin offside was for Austin. Looked to be earlier in the play from the position the free kick was.

First half was hopeless hoofball, as bad as it has been all season. There really was nothing. Second half was better. Not back to our best but we looked up for it. We also looked as if Wilson told them to ruff up Wycombe a bit and get the crowd going.

The ref was a prize prick. The biggest prickish thing he did was booking Marshall for being offside.

Talking of Marshall (and Amankwha), though they added a bit to our attack today. Though Amankwha seemed a little slow reacting to a few balls standing still instead of chasing it.

We could be playing Millwall 3 times in just over a week...

edit: fuck, just managed to repeat Barry's post above. Oh well, at least we agree.

I'm normally one to admit the lino is in a better position, but Austin didn't look offside for one moment. I agree about the subs - they all had a good game. Remarkably, Marshall managed to get penalised for controlling a ball with his chest, and also for miscontrolling the ball once the flag had been raised for offside. Spoke to a Wycombe fan on the train back - he was behind the goal and said it didn't go in for their second. All in all it sounds like we've been robbed, but 2-2 was still a fair result on the balance of play. Play-offs it is.

Seems like dodgy officials and lack of luck again played a part today, but fundamently we couldn't even muster a shot on goal in the first half . Disappointed to have conceded right before half time for the third game in succession and again not managed to turn it round to a win.  Sounds like both Greer and Cuthbert were a bit shaky.  We are the most out of form team at the moment only picking up 3 points out of the last 12, but I'd rather be out of form now and find it just in time for the play-offs.  Let's hope the team can pick their confidence back up and pray they play like we know they can!

I thought Greer was good today, basically the only one of our players who performed first half.Second half was a good performance I thought ,we looked dangerous every time we attacked.McGovern MOTM for me today and Marshall made a huge difference.Paynter was a bit lucky to stay on after headbutting their twat but apart from that looked back to his best. How that cheating twat Ainsworth got mom christ knows. He was diving all game and didnt even get booked for a terrible late challenge on Lucas then 20 seconds later,Marshall got a yellow for nothing.I dont think its all doom and gloom for the play-offs,although we haven't been winning we've showed some guts and character by coming from behind in recent games and those are the type of sides that do well in the play-offs.I think Id rest Charlie now until the play-offs.

Just back.

Very frustrating game again, don't think we even registered a shot in the first half. A poor first half took a turn for the worse when Wycombe scored just before half time, but once again our midfield failed to pick up the runner (Bloomfield or whatever). Second half we came out with more desire, and did play some neat football at times, getting it out to the flanks, and JP certainly was instrumental. Marshall again put in a good shift. Overall, i'm disappointed not to have won, as i think we had enough chances, but i'm also relieved not to have lost, Lucas kept us in it good and proper today, proving why he's rated so highly.

On another note, Paynter and Sheehan would probably have both been sent off had it been any other referee, Sheehan kept on and on at the officials, whilst Paynter clearly headbutted their player. It also seemed one of our players (Austin?) was booked for being offside?

Next game we need Amankwaah and Lescinel in at full back, Sheehan's balls are the same every time, and Darby just doesn't have the physical prescence or attacking tenacity that Big Kev has.

Only positive was our ability to come from behind twice, although the discipline of the players today was poor.

Ward might be out for two games anyway, Danny put that as worse case in his interview.  Is it mental or physical tiredness that is hurting this team or a bit of both?  In any event, Easton in for Ferry would be okay, but having Ferry and Douglas out at the same time might be difficult.  I think we need to put out a team that rests players next Saturday. We can't do that against Millwall for the last game of the regular season if they are still in the hunt.  I would start Nouble, Easton (for Ferry), Manky and Marshall (if fit) for Brentford.  If Millwall are out of it, I would start Nouble, Pericard (if fit) and Easton (for Douglas).  Putting JFL at center back for Cutthroat is something else I would do for Brentford.

Morrison
LJF
Kennedy

Macklin
Easton
Timlin
Marshall

Nouble
Pericard

we do, just about have enough players to rest everyone. You'd be a bit gutted if you put that team out - then heard Leeds and Millwall were both losing.

I'd certainly change it though, not to the extend I posted above but I would change it. Infact I would have changed it around today.

Plus, the reserve players might put in a 'pick me performance' and hopefully cause Wilson some headaches and/or give someone a kick up the ass and/or give us another option.

True, but Wilson is very rigid with his starting XI. In the past both Smith and LJF have come in, done fantastic jobs as cover but gone straight back out again when others became available.

Same with Marshall after Brighton and Southampton.

Post by: Nemo on Saturday, April 24, 2010, 19:36:00
Just got back likewise, I was sat in the Wycombe end (thanks Dave) so hopefully I can provide a slightly different perspective on the match today.

Firstly, the referee. Attwell was indeed a terrible ref, some stupid yellow cards but equally we could easily have finished with 8 men today- Ward should have walked in the first minute and somehow didn't even get booked, Paynter clearly headbutted someone and Sheehan's tackle could have easily been given a red as well. Call it passion or call it stupidity, we are very lucky to have come away from this game without suspensions.

Secondly, I thought Wycombe were pretty good, especially once we'd stepped up. Gareth Ainsworth is clearly a class above and much too good to be relegated, and I think Revell showed that he'd have been a decent squad player here if not a starter.

All in all, I agree with what a few people have said about us looking tired- but so did they- when Marshall and Easton came on they both looked sharp and a few Wycombe guys around me noted that the "little black guy" was tearing them apart. Three or four changes for the next game would seem prudent both in terms of the playoffs and to give us the best chance of actually winning the game itself.

The penalty was a bit soft, but probably fair, JPM didn't need to make the tackle, and was well saved by Lucas- we just didn't react quickly enough to the save, almost like we weren't expecting it to be saved. As for whether it was over the line or not, I thought it was but with Massey and Attwell who knows?

Both, which is why I'd take the three Youngster and Douggie out of the Milwall game. Surely we couldn't get done for resting 4 players.

Would pick our best 11 for Brentford, just in case the truly remarkable happens and Millwall and Leeds both drop points.

First half we were gash. Wycombe probably deserved to go in front.

Second half we looked a lot better, very open game with both teams going for the win. Oh well, such is life.

Attwell is a cunt

I'd start easton and amankwaah next game. Ferry's good but we looked to jaded and samey first half. I'm sure i have nowt else to ad to the subject, but wycombe is a dive to get out of and road closures can suck my balls

Defining the best 11 is up to debate.  I think that Marshal (if fit, assuming Ward isn''t), Easton and Manky should start.  Playing Charlie off the bench if needed might be a good idea and starting Pericard (if fit) or Nouble necessary to get some playing time before the play-offs looks necessary.  It could turn out that we have to play Huddersfield.

I don't see how we've got anything to lose by making some changes for Brentford. There is little to no chance of us making 2nd and more important is getting out of the current slump, giving some players a rest, giving some players a chance and trying some different tactics / formations. We have one style of play, one formation and one set of tactics so why not give it a try and see what happens?

There's a strong argument that LJF and Marshall shouldn't have been dropped in the first place, so give them a game. I'd also start Nouble, sure he has been pretty shit so far but he's shown occasional flashes and he has pace. So why not start him and see what we can achieve with that pace.

There again, I'm not sure I'm the tactical god I thought I was. I just put Football Manager on my iPhone and I'm doing shit.

Paynter was a yard offside for the first goal, i know if you see the highlights he doesnt look it but when the cross was taken he was off, i was dead in line. Austin however wasnt he was ayard behind his man and the marshall decision was just fucking ludricous.

Waddock "did a Mourinho" & kept the pitch dry so we couldn't zip the ball about (Xavi = Ferry; Zlatan = Paynter; Iniesta = Ward; Pique = Greer). Slightly tongue-in-cheek but also true, I bet.

The signs have been there for a few games now, we're starting to run out of fuel in certain areas. Not complaining - these boys have been cunting magnificent & I can't wait for next season, whatever division we're in. I also accepted p/offs a while ago so wasn't massively pissed-off on the way home. We've already over-achieved so let's enjoy the ride.

We're also getting fucked right up the shitter by refs/lino's, ie Southend & today, was it over the line, & Austin looked like he came from way behind the defender before he rounded the keeper & scored today - just my feeling from behind the goal so who knows?

Anyone else notice Austin shaking his head at the end of game when we started booing as they walked off? Charlie - we were booing Cuntwell & his assistants - NOT the players. My mate seemed to think he was gesturing towards Cuntwell & shaking his head so hopefully that's it. We're falling away a bit, but we all appreciated the 2nd half effort today, it was good stuff & I was encouraged by the spirit & coming from behind twice.

Form doesn't necessarily mean a fucking thing once the p/offs start - that has been proven many times in the past.

Fuck knows how I got to my conclusion, then again I hated stats at school/college.

Still, I think the whole play off lottery thing is a load of bollocks. It's just like any game of football - generally the better team wins but sometimes luck plays a part. I think the playoffs are simply harder to call because the teams tend to be evenly matched.

Was a brilliant second half really enjoyable still think we will pip millwall to third but rovers will turn over for leeds.

Dead right!  Somewhat made up for the first half.  Couple of great goals right in front of us, hadn't crossed my mind that Paynter was off - Austin definitely wasn't.  What an idiot the lino was. Couldn't see whether the ball crossed the line for their second at the other end of course.

did anyone mention Marshall already, sorry didn't get to read through whole thread - thought he had a good game when on for Ward.

Or mention of Deirdre Barlow song?

Good second half. Seemed like we ran out of steam when we got the equaliser. 14 minutes should have been enough time to get the winner. Unfortunately typical of how we havnt been able to make things happen in the last month.

Have to say, you usually get a good game at Wycombe. The 31 with the long hair looked a decent player.

I guess Ferry was injured? Because otherwise I find the Easton substitution puzzling.

Fucking gutted that the Austin 'goal' was given offside. It was the first thing that came into my head when I woke up this morning. Austin had a word with him and the lino admitted it was 'marginal', hopefully he regrets it now. He got it wrong.

Fans could have been better, it has to be said. When it goes 2-2 with 10 minutes to go, if the fans go mad then the Wycombe players probably panic. A good example of us doing that would be the game there in 2002. Still, play offs it is. Least we know now. Any defeat at Millwall wont mess their heads up for the PO semi finals.

All pretty much covered I think. Crap first half decent second. Officials were absolutely shite! Really would like to see Manky instead of Derby. Derby was steady as he has been since joining us, but steady won't be enough in the play offs.
Also thought 'Deidre' looked more like 'computer says no' ?

Atmostphere fluctuated at times. At times we were absolutely booming and Wycombe were panicking. Think we can count ourselves pretty fucking unlucky not to win that. Ok, so Billy was lucky to stay on, Lucas saved our arses at the end, but shit me I cannot help but feel we got utterly screwed yesterday afternoon.

Whatever the result I'm gonna feel a twat as I'm wearing my Greek warrior fancy dress costume as I'm straight down to a 40th in Briz after the game. Hopefully it will inspire the boys today

Had a good crack doing the fancy dress thing yesterday and then a mad rush down to Briz afterwards thanks to the closing of A404 at 3pm on a Saturday so diverted through Maidenhead. Spoke to a couple of people and a good chat with one of the Ultras (who also follows Roma).

Bit frustrating yesterday and some of Attwell's decisions. Seeing the 2nd goal on the TV it was a clumsy tired tackle from JPM and Lucas's save was almost too good as he nearly caught it and it popped out of his hands rather than a push around for a corner. Attwell was closer to it than the lino but let him make the call, I guess with his reputation he's gonna let the lino make the call each time. Some very inconsistent decisions, their left back should have got a 2nd yellow, Ainsworth fouled Lucas and no card and Marshall yellow card for trapping a ball over the top.

Interesting what Wilson does in terms of selection as some players clearly need a rest so the pragmatic, rational thing would be to rest players and prepare for tyhe play offs but if there is a mathematical chance of auto does he keep his first choice 11 in? I think he should rest players for Brentford as Millwall game might be too high profile to rest 4 or 5 but there will be some quarters who will criticise if Leeds or Millwall slip up and we've rested players and don't beat Brentford. Think it would be good fro the team to almost forget on auto and get their minds and bodies prepared for the play offs.

Danny in his interview live on RS conceded that it would be the playoffs, said he was looking for two good performances (not necessarily wins).  At this point he was angry as I have heard him in an interview.  After mentioning that he would not be kicking the cat as he likes animals, he later said that the team had to be prepared for slip ups and big games were coming up and he always said it would go down to the wire.

Which teams are going to give two good performances, Ward looks to be out for at least the last the next two games and Marshall had a knock.  This is is a team that looks tired (the two Wycombe awarded goals were very much avoidable by greater alertness, evident on looking at them and as clearly pointed out by Danny).

This should come down to who is the most tired and rest them.  If there are players that are jaded they may as well be injured. Earlier in the thread LJF was mentioned as a midfielder, I read somewhere that he has played midfield.  Having that aerial ability in front of the back four is something that might be welcome with five minutes to go away from home, similar to how Luggy used Peacock.  Assuming both Ward and Marshall are out, there may need to be an LJF and Sheahan left side.  Another option is starting Easton for Ferry.  Austin needs to be given a rest, his game is all about sharpness in and around the box.  Pricard and/or Nouble have to step up to the plate, but the loan extension for Nouble suggests that Pericard might be loaned out to Aldershot next season.

There are several players that have never played a full season and many that have played just about the full season.  I think Danny will hedge, he will put out the strongest line ups, but not based on what has been his starting line-up for weeks since MK Dongs.  In any event, no Ward on Saturday.

It happened to him 3 times with Bristol City (they were in 2nd position with a month to go and slipped back into the POs) and that cost him his job there.

I would expect him to be very upset inside about how its gone in the last few weeks. But one thing you can always say about Danny Wilson is he is very professional, and a manager who relies on his brain rather than shouting/throwing around tea cups in the dressing room.

I think that is a very relevant point and that from a physical and mental perspective tiredness will creep in especially for youngsters who have not been in the situation before of 'closing out a promotion'. Since the beginning of March we've had a number of high profile games and the Leeds win set expectations sky high and we've not hit the heights since, we've had an element of bad luck and also come up against teams who have played out of their skins to get results against us.

I am not sure that Danny Wilson was expecting us to hit second at Easter but once we were in that position he had to stick with the team that got us in that position as our squad isn't that deep and maybe we've done a Villa and run out of steam a bit. I don't take that Danny mucks up promotion winning situations and the situation as Bristol City was slightly different in that they expected and almost demanded promotion. so the pressure was huge once they started to wobble. I think we have faith in Wilson to do the right thing and only him and the coaching staff will observe which players are delivering in training and it games, they're the experts and Wilson has got a decent record in pretty much 15 years continuous management

We were quite in the first half and I think that was a combination of a flat performance, attacking the other end and maybe one or two of us had beers in the sunshine which can make you a little weary. Billy's goal livened us up and thought we were much livelier in the second half and got behind the lads plus a bit of ref abuse.

the performances and results not going for us has been a shame but i have to admit that filling away ends and pubs for some of our away games have been great and although its a shame we could'nt hold on to second im still enjoying this seasons promotion push especially after the rubbish we had to watch last season. hope we get a big crowd for the Brentford game and a POSITIVE atmosphere because lets be fair, we have over achieved big time this season.

Still, we dont seem to raise ourselves to support from the first whistle. Thats what players appreiciate, it takes away their nerves.

Thats how you really inspire players. Thinking back to 2001, we were voted by Wycombe fans as the best away support at Adams park that season in Total Football magazine. And we were absolutely superb! The team, of course, were shite.

Im a bit ashamed to support a team where I view the team as better than the fans! Haha.

Title: Re: Wycombe wanderers V Swindon Town official matchday thread
Post by: Spencer_White on Sunday, April 25, 2010, 17:09:37
Firstly because its true, and our support was poor noise wise for our numbers.

Because I think our support is part of what defines us as a club? Its part of why Ive been so passionate about STFC for the past decade and more. Its what got me really hooked on it. I worry its dissapearing forever, and I just dont see what sort of spectacle lower league football is without it. In what other way can we compete? I guess it bothers me because deep down because I question my own desire to go if our support becomes all dads and daughters clap clap clap. Wheres the soul? I dont want to have to admit to myself that I should have just supported Man United/Chelsea or Spurs like everyone else. Because we seem to be getting left behind by them in terms of passion for the game.

If you dont have the atmosphere, you dont have the passion, and without the passion, whats the point? Malpas really did ruin it for me at Swindon because not only was he unbelievably rubbish but there seemed to be no prospect of him being removed either which meant a lot of Swindon fans werent even sure if they wanted the team to win. That had never happened before and were still recovering from that. But I want it back the way it was. Honestly the whole Malpas thing made me very depressed in my own life for about a year because id say 90% of my mates gave up on Swindon. Became a rubbish day out.

Fish head, yes it was 0-0, and when I said the team were shit, they were, talent wise, but they pulled out a massive effort to grind out a point to help keep us up, and the fans had something to do with that.

Which bit of the 80's ?  I remember being in the TE with enough room to swing a giraffe let alone a cat, apart from the very odd game....by the late 80's the action was on the south side.

I don't agree with Spencer's Malpas argument ...he wasn't with us for that long, but it is a concern how our fans have become very passive and small in number.  Would we take more than 20K to Wembley this time if we make it?

Hard one to call. I've been disappointed with the gates this year, but a first trip to the new Wembley would probably see so called 'old fans' go and those who live in Swindon but don't give a shit about the club. Could it be our fans are turning increasingly plastic? as evident with 6k at Fulham.

A good gauge will be how many we get at the home leg of the semis of any potential numbers.

If we could get 30,000 at Wembley that might be the spark we need to get the juices going again.

But we'll have to wait an entire summer to find out what effect its had. It might be another Fulham, where people come as a one off, and then return to not being interested.

Myself I think we can sell 20,000. Not sure about 30,000 not anymore. The prices are pretty steep as well.

Same place they came from. Our average attendence in the 92/93 season wasn't a huge fucking amount bigger than the it is now, certainly it didn't reach 5 figures. We took 40k plus to Wembley at the end of that season because people that barely ever went to the CG bought tickets for it. My sister went FFS. I don't think she'd been to a game before or has been since.

We haven't had decent home crowds in decades to be honest. Even in the Premiership season some of the attendences were shit. Oldham at home I think we didn't even get 9,000.

I think we are one dimensional at the moment.

Danny needs another one or two match strategies. The other teams we have faced over the last couple of months have watched us before hand and know how we play and adapt accordingly.

I don't know much about football management or player directions and how they cope and adapt (obviously) and if it is even possible.

However, I really think we have been sussed.

I think Wednesday might stay up. As long as Palace don't beat West Brom this evening then it's in their hands in the big Wednesday vs Palace last game of the season.

I think Palace will win tonight. However I would like there to be a final game shoot out, would be entertaining.

Has anyone seen League 2? Anyone down to 11th can still get into the play-offs!

We have always sold our tickets...for every Town fan that regularly goes 2,3 or 4 of the family who dont usually bother goes too...

Agreed. In 90 and 93 tens of thousands of extra "fans" came from nowhere. We kept asking for, and getting, more tickets, which got snapped up straight away.

I'm confident that this phenomenon would happen again, especially with it being a 'new' ground (I've been to a few England games since the re-build and it's fkin impressive). Like someone else said, just hope we get the chance to find out. What's vital is how many would hopefully get bitten by the bug - THAT'S what really matters.

I have my old man in Wales, other long time supporting family members dotted all over the place, who have other commitments and things that take up their time and money, who would come out for a final, and i reckon that's the same for a lot of people, if we get there and got 35000 tickets, that's what we'd sell.

We've lost a huge ammount of our fanbase from all points of the compass from Swindon.
I've known fans in the past from Newbury - they used to run a coach to every away game
and had quite a crew.Warminster,Stroud,Cheltenham and from the Fairford/Lechlade areas.

I know a guy who coaches at Fairford Town and he's told me in the past, that a large ammount
of the youth players there, have never ever been to the County Ground.

A trip to Wembley would bring national publicity and reignite interest in STFC from past fans
and their children. It may be a one off,but it would be a great start.

If we were to get to Wembley and win (massive IF!) I think the board should look to put season tickets back to £259 for one week only, immediately after the final.

Why reward those that wont get behind the club no matter what division were in with cheap prices?

Get them hooked (and take their cash!)

The club will gladly take their cash at £379...

I got that Newbury one a few times, most of the people who used to now dont go, and their kids go to Reading. It will be hard getting them back, but things will change if we keep showing on and off the field improvements.

Get them back? Were they ever really here in the first place. I can't see anyone with Swindon Town blood running through their veins taking their kids to see the plastics. They are Ephemeral fans.

That's not to say we don't want them in the County Ground though.

They dont take them, or most dont of the ones i know, just going back to an earlier discussion we lost a generation and a half.

Aaah I see, kids old enough to choose and go on their own are choosing Reading rather than Swindon. That's just bad parenting!

Things go in cycles, we'll rise again. Though if this stupid 4 year Premiership parachute payment comes in then all of us (City, Reading, Rovers) may lose out. I mean there is always the outside chance a good season would see us flirt with Championship playoffs (see Swansea, Cardiff, Blackpool), but that dream is pretty impossible if the Premier league will bankroll its failures for 4 years.

Are our gates really that bad or down compared to previous seasons? Really?
Just go and look at www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk and have a look at the 88-89 season for instance. That was a  playoff season at Championship level under Macari. There's a few notable sub 8000 attendances there and a couple of sub 6000.

As been mentioned, it's probably best not too read much into our stated attendances back then, although i do remember some games from that season with the ground looking a bit sparse. Our most unbelievable stated attendance was 1986 V Crewe, circa 11k reported and there wasn't a spare inch in the ground, there were at least 15 if not nearer 20k that day.

I see there were 12k odd at ipswich for the milk cup that year...there must have been a substantial away following that night as well...I remember it well as a 14/15 year old school boy...

Was that the one where Nicky Hammond lost us the game?

nah...pre nicky hammond days, besides it was 6-1. I think there was more to it than a goal keeping error!

I remember the laughter around us in the Shrivvy Rd when they announced the crowd vs Chester on the night that we clinched promotion. Everyone knew that the club were significantly reducing the actual total. I reckon you could safely say (just a rough conservative guess);

Arkells       = 5000?
Town End  = 3000?
Shrivvy     = 4000?
Bank & Chester = 5000?

If that was today in the world of internet forums etc, they wouldn't have got away with it, some of the attendance claims back then were shocking, i'm sure it wasn't just us doing it though.

Agreed - no chance.

The slump in attendances all over the country in the 80's wasn't as bad as it looked......
