Title: Official - Saints V's Swindon Matchday thread.
Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 10:20:09
Blame me if I've jinxed it.

Paynter and Morrison definately out.

I think we could win this, although I'd be happy with a draw.

We'll get a draw...1-1

I've seen us go for a few at Soton down the years....5 being a popular number. Don't think it would be a complete surprise if it's similar tonight.

Gutted I can't go. I think it's going to be a backs to the wall 1-1 draw after taking a surprise lead through a JP McGovern goal.

Something similar to Si. We're not going to have it easy tonight. But there is hope - Leeds lost 1-0 there at the weekend and apparantly didn't play well, so if we turn up and put a shift in we could get something from it. Having said all that, I'm going to say a 2-0 defeat.

They are a good side, but not good enough to be up in the promtion mix, therfore they mustn't be feared. I believe they will expect to win but we will turn them over 2-1, Austin (2) back on song.

Title: Re: Official - Saints V's Swindon Matchday thread.
Post by: Spencer_White on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 11:36:27
A lot of the bookies have missed how many injuries weve got. Coral have got Southampton at 4/5, which is good odds for a team that have won their last 7 home games. Im in 2 minds, feel a bit dirty betting on us to lose.

I think we will need to keep a clean sheet to get anything from the game.

But we have always got Austin, if he gets a chance he wont think about it, he'll just slot it into the net.

See everyone's preparing themselves mentally for the pain ahead.

Can't see us scoring in a 4-5-1, or keeping them out. 4-0.

Only too happy to be quoted and abused by merry revellers afterwards though.

One other thing to consider is that we did thrash them at the County Ground earlier in the season with 1 up front.

But they do seem to have strengthened in a lot of areas.

I hate Pardew. Hes such a wanker.

Yes, I think we'll be seeing a very different (ie much stronger) Saints side tonight and a relatively weakened Town side from then. But, I wasn't optimistic about that game either. Getting a lift from my mate who's a Saints fan so if it's a heavy defeat for either side, I could be walking home. 2-2, just to save my legs

Title: Re: Official - Saints V's Swindon Matchday thread.
Post by: jonny72 on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 12:35:39
Even without the injuries, playing 4-5-1 tonight wouldn't be a bad idea and I'd prefer it to 4-4-2 with Ward up front. Though I'd be tempted to put Ward in the centre and have him push up a bit with Marshall on the left, so more of a 4-4-1-1. A lot happier with Austin as the sole striker, as the chances of him missing two good chances in a game are pretty remote - just need to give him a sniff and he'll score.

Its a far more important game for Southampton than us, they pretty much need to win every game they've got left to make the playoffs. Which could work in our favour - they'll be going all out for a win and if our defence can hold out we stand a good chance of sneaking it.

A glorious night for football underlights, great stadium and pitch. We have good players who'll love it. As long as we start well we should be ok. Keeping the crowd a litlle quiet will be key.

The pressure is off us tonight after Saturday's events and Ston's desperate need to win every game. This I'm hoping will work in our favour tonight.

If we can hold them out for 30 mins, & quieten their fans, then it's all to play for.

However if we have a poor start, then it could be unpleasant viewing and there'll be plenty of Town fans back at that park & ride by 9:15.

I'm optimistic that we can avoid the 2nd scenario though.

A34/M3/M27 here I come.

The title of this thread is all wrong.  'Saints vs Swindon' sounds like a Southampton fan has started it.  'Southampton vs Town' or something similar would be much more acceptable.

I think we'll grab a 1-1 draw with (shock) a late equaliser of our very own.

If we are (we're) serious about promotion then we will (we'll) need at least two points from our next two games. I think the performance tonight matters more than the outcome of the game.

I think we do tend to do ourselves down.  Probably because we still cant believe that we're actually good.  Many years of mediocrity took care of that.  Draw or 2-1 win for us in a hard fought game is my bet.

And I cant go.  Im stuck working in Brizzole.  Arse!

I didn't write that very well.

I'd rather we played good football, got a bit unlucky and drew the game rather than play shit football and get the lucky draw when we should have lost. It's all down to momentum, we need full confidence going into these next couple of months.

Clearly though three points over zero would be ace, no matter how they were gained. World beaters don't lose either. I think if we play at the top of our game we'll get a point as a minimum.

Charlie up front alone, with Marshall - AMR, Ward - AML, JPM - AMC and then Ferry and Douglas, MC. That'd be bitchin'.

Hopefully it's just a European injury then.

I've got to leave the internet now to go home, so i shall have to try and listen to the radio - which i find maddeningly edge-of-the-seat.

I really hate how Vic Morgan gets so excited over the opposition going close. I tend to lose concentration of the commentary, then hear him go mental expecting us to be having good opportunity only to hear the phrase "and Phil Smith saves well again". Annoying.

I really hate how Vic Morgan gets so excited over the opposition going close.

I find him generally very average at commentating. Never know what is going on until well after the fact. There have been goals that I wasn't sure which team had scored! And Saturday we thought Austin had scored a header, only to find out form the TV highlights it wasn't.

Come back Ed, disinfect yourself of the Rovers stench first.

1st ten minutes after the break will be crucial. All too often teams lack concentration after HT and after the pressure we're under, we could fold.

Keep it cool, and a 1-0 snatch and grab could be on the cards.

I love it when we get a result against the so called "bigger" clubs, especially when they come out with comments like "a draw is as good as a win for them" as these smack of such arrogance.

With the amount of injuries we have, Ferry missing, and Norwich being on form at the moment, I think that we will do well to get a draw on Saturday, but for tonight anyway I'm all smiles!

We sounded class, even Mark "second string" Marshall didn't sound out of place and Austin sounded like he had rete good go on his own up top - Sheehan must be totting up these bookings as well as Douglas...

Lets force results against Norwich and Leeds, and catch the dirty northerners. Don't want to put a downer on tonights performance but we're going to regret dropping points against Charlton.

You have to admire the spirit we seem to be having to close these games out when under real pressure. Maybe it's something we have worked on? We know it was probably one of our weakest points earlier on in the season. Can't wait for Norwich now. I'm buzzing. We do have a huge injury/suspension list now though eek.

As with other WACCOE threads, but Leeds truly are a set of deluded morons: http://www.waccoe.com/index.php?showtopic=177251&st=0

Cracking result, shame about Cuthbert but 1-0 away midweek at St. Marys is an awesome result.

Looks like the servers crashed...  I'm getting calls from lads down there, it's like they've had several kilos of drugs, mental..

Wilson on: Delighted with win, Cuthbert's injury is probably a medial ligament strain, a few weeks to a month. Lecs did well, CB is his best position really, will be looking to make that his own. Phil Smith was fantastic, Austin too. Proud of the performance, kept the ball well, Marshall did well too, as did everyone. Ferry played well, Second yellow card was deserved but unfortunate, just tiredness, 6 points from Soton and Brighton is fantastic. Bodin on the bench, he is in his plans now which is testament to his performances, as well as the injuries, will get on with it. Doesn't care what the rest of the league thinks, we just need to keep winning and see how it ends up.

Just nabbed a direct quotes from Wilson bit random and Nemo gives you a better idea of the whole thing but..

'Immense. That was a monster, monster result for us. We worked damned hard for it. There are players out there who have run themselves into the ground.

Lesci- Fantastic. Marshall - fantastic.

Cuthbert - could be out for quite a few weeks - suspected Medial ligament strain.

We didn't really let them take the ball cheaply off us.

He's put a great shift in (Marshall). They've all done that today.

Ferry - that was just unfortunate. A bit of tiredness.

I think everybody started doubting us. Just keep believing. It won't be easy but there is is still much hard work to do.

Within the club we know we've got enough (for Norwich).

That was quality.

What pleased me most was the fringe players stepping up.

I'm a Phil Smith fan but I don't think he's as good as Lucas. Tonight he was every bit as good as Lucas. Caught most things and those he didn't catch he punched well enough. A lot more communication with the defence.

When Cuthbert went off I was worried as he's been nothing short of excellent for us BUT step up LJF, tonight he was a fucking rock. He won every header and made every tackle. Impressed with him and pleased for him.

Marshall had a decent game, chased everything and never gave up despite being bullied and literally pushed around by Wayne Thomas. Some good runs and crosses to.

The usual suspects were quality to. Greer, JPM, Douglas, Ferry and Ward.

Darby looked solid at right back.

Austin did well, was clearly fucked towards the end but still at least tried to chase everything. Fucking great finisher.

He is the best finisher I have ever seen.

Pardew did the team talk for us. Fucking cock. Ex Reading cunt.

12 heroes tonight(well done Lecs when you came on).We battled to play our football and caused
them problems in the 2nd half with our passing and movement.Above all we kept our shape.

Although the experienced players played very well,i just want to mention Charlie,Ferry and Wardy
who i thought were immense tonight. They really looked as if they enjoyed playing at St Mary's and
proved a point to everyone with their quality.Wardy was great with his pace and movement,Charlie
i knew you'd score when you pushed the ball past Davis! Ferry covered every blade, but just miss
controlled the ball and in stretching caught their player. We knew the ref was going to go to his
pocket for a 2nd yellow.Even so,you can be proud of your performace tonight Simon.

I feared that Cuthbert had picked up a ligament injury.Couldn't believe the Saints fans reactions to
what was obviously a serious injury.

Our fans were immense in their support, putting the Saints fans to shame, they just don't get behind
their side for 90 minutes.Smithy deserved a bit of luck with them hitting the woodwork, as his handling was very good tonight.

Danny will now need to beg, steal and borrow some loan players.

Red Army!

How many loan players are we allowed to play at once? Might become a bit of a problem here.

Ward, Ferry, Darby, Sheehan are all on loan, if the maximum is five in the squad we can only add one more to that, and that's presuming Ritchie (also on loan) drops out of the squad entirely.

I don't think the loan system can help us all that much really.

Got back about 45 mins ago, still fucking buzzing. First half we got dicked, no two ways about it, but defensively we were superb, throwing ourselves in the way of everything, with Smithy pulling off a couple of worldies as well.

Second half, the two wide boys pushed on to their full-backs and stopped them bombing on. When we won the ball, we looked lethal just dropping it behind their full backs and the front three were very fluid and dangerous.

Greer and JFL were fucking immense, as was Smith, who caught everything. Austin couldn't walk by the end he was that shattered, Marshy and Ward were dangerous on the break and worked hard defensively, but my mom was JD. Absolutely fucking incredible performance. Stopped them play so many times, and when he got his foot on the ball, he slowed us down, made sure we kept the ball and looked to create.

Our fans were quality, especially last 10 obviously. There was about 20 mins between about the 60th and 80th where the whole ground was quiet with nerves and tension and what not but other than a great atmosphere. There fans were shit and fucking scummy, booing cuthbert when he was down injured even the second time when it was clear he was seriously hurt.

All in all, a fucking incredible night, i'll be buzzing off this for days!

WOW! What a night. Got back at about 1am and was still buzzing, as I am now!

People have summed the game up well, so all I'm going to add is that every player gave everything they had tonight. Southampton chucked everything at us in the first half and then again towards the end. To hold on with 10 men was fantastic.

Looks like we'll be putting a mixture of reserves and youths out on Saturday the way things are going. It'll be a very tough game and I can see us suffering from fatigue after a very tough game tonight. But if there's a good crowd and everybody gets behind the lads then anything's possible. I thought there was no chance of a win tonight and the lads proved me wrong.

As for the Leeds thread, I think I've given up caring what they think. Let's just wait and see what the league table looks like in May.

If we can hold them out for 30 mins, & quieten their fans, then it's all to play for.

I'm quite happy with that part of my earlier post - we held on when we had to then grew into the game very frikkin nicely.
Been back in West-Oxon for a good while now but I've been reading forums, local paper sites etc. Seems like half the Stains fans are talking shit about us being tinpot with no fans & the other half being big enough to say how impressed they were with us. Spoke to a couple of them after the game & they were impressed with our performance, said we looked like a classy team on the ball, defended & attacked well & were surprised at our offensive attitude.
They pinned us for much of the first half & I was thinking we were gonna be fucked after an hour if it stayed like that. But it was chalk & cheese because 2nd half we gained the upper hand by competing more aggressively, winning more headers/2nd balls etc then calmly popping the ball about. It quickly developed into sharp attacking play using the width of the pitch on both flanks, and then a little slipped ball through the middle and Austin did what he does to reward our excellent 2nd half play. Can't wait to see it again because it was right in front of us and it just went fucking berserk. From when you just knew Austin was gonna get to the ball before the keeper, then when he flicked it past him & ran round his other side, then when you were just waiting for him to roll it into the empty net, then the celebrations at the corner flag - just a magic, fantastic moment. Won't forget that in a hurry.
Smith had a real presence about him, commanding & very safe hands, GG & Lecs were giants, Darby grew & I'm sure will continue to, JD was immense, putting tackle after tackle in & calmly moving the ball around, Ferry caused havoc in the 2nd half, they couldn't pick him up & he started attack after attack, JPM ran his bollocks off, MM & Wardy both attacked well down the flanks & worked hard, & Austin looked like he'd been playing the lone striker role for years - this boy is the absolute real-deal/dog's bollocks.
Great fun abusing the Stains fans on the streets in our convoy of double-deckers en route back to the park & ride  :moon: :smugfu:

"Swindon got to the second ball 9 times out of 10, the hardest working team i've seen all season."

From another forum. That sentence makes me so happy. We've had some praise for our nice play at times, but there's nothing like reading that the lads worked their bollocks off and gave their all for the club. Best group of players for a long time.

It shows the sad state of lower league football when our players can step up against the 'big teams' for a couple of games, but can't manage to do the same against the local rivals.

I would have swapped last nights win and the leeds home win for 6 points off rovers.

Ignore me. I'm in a bad mood this morning. Drank too much. Had to get up.

Bad combo.

Southampton tried to cheat as well according to our OS.

'The home side then upped the pace, bringing on strikers Papa Waigo and David Connolly and moving to a 4-4-3 formation.

tbh, I didn't find myself enraged by the "Leeds effect" blog post, I felt sorry for them. They're clearly shitting bricks at the prospect of their season unravelling yet again and have started to concoct DaVinci Code style theories to comfort themselves with, because they can't quite believe their massive club is actually playing at the level it now deserves to be at. Fuck em, I don't care about what Leeds do or think or anyone else come to that - it's all about us and what we do. If we keep on as we are, we'll rightfully have earned our place in the play-offs and may even sneak into one of the top two spots that other "bigger" clubs think is theirs by right, but let's focus on our own performances. Leave the looking over their shoulders and ever more fantastic excuses to the tinpot clubs.

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes.

I think tonight was a bit like our 1-0 win at West Ham in the early 90's. Just that feeling that things are going to go your way.

When Austin went one way then the other round their keeper and the resulting mayhem is one of those amazing moments that will live with you forever. Cant wait to see it on TV. Woke up absolutely trashed this morning.

The whole league FEARS us. They fear Charlie Austin because he is absolutely deadly. You give him and inch and he will take a mile. So proud of the lads. As Dave said, the lads who came in proved themselves tonight, they came in and put in a great shift for the team, so proud of them.

Only downside was the injury to super Scotty Cuthbert. Apart from that it was perfect.

Charlie Austin - Your new number ONE

Well yesterday was my first time I have seen the Town this year and was very impressed.

Smith - Outstanding, some great saves second half and only minus points were some slightly didgy punching in the 1st half, otherwise did everything he had to do....awesome and a contender for MOM 9/10.

Darby - Did well against their wide man who rarely got past him and he matched for pace most of the game, good defending but not so good when he crossed the half way line, could go on to be a star at Liverpool -7/10.

Sheehan - Steady and did everything he had to, didn't get forward as much as he can and didnt get any chances for a cracking free kick, solid 7/10.

Cuthbert - Looked totally solid and had Barnard in his pocket all the time he was on the pitch, why the fuck Saints fans booed him when he was obviously very badly hurt is beyond me, deserved his standing ovation as he left the field 7/10.

Greer - Awesome and a born leader, Lambert hardly had a kick in the box and only had the one chance from outside the box when he hit the bar, fantastic 8/10.

Douglas - The man is a legend and ran the midfield from very deep was my MOM did everything perfectly steady as a rock, good advantage from the ref on the foul on him in the centre circle that led to our goal 10/10.

Ferry - Ran around and tackled well, made some great through balls, generally was well up for it, deserved his second booking but didn't deserve the first IMO, would have scored an 8/10 if he hadn't been sent off 7/10.

McGovern - mmmm not his best game, 1st half was a passenger and second he got stuck in more and had a few good through balls and wild tackles! probably just about earned a 7/10.

Marshall - Looked eager and handy with the ball at his feet, some poor crossing and some woeful tackling on him from the Saints fullback, who bundled him into touch at every opportunity 6.5/10.

Ward - This guy is awesome, great when running at players and turning them inside out, good feet and quick with a good finish, shame he didn't shoot a little more when he could have, looks to be a star in the making 8/10.

Austin - 1st time I have seen him in the flesh, hes got great feet and a good footballing brain, lacking some fitness (he was dead on his feet for the last 20 mins) took on and beat his marker so many times, took his goal like a seasoned professional, the way he rounded the keeper was brilliant, was surprised he wasnt taken off late on instead of Ward as Ward still had energy but Charlie was spent 9/10.

LFJ - Came on for Cuthbert and was fantastic, did everything needed, great tackles, great heading, great blocking, ran Douglas close for MOM 9/10.

Ritchie - Ran around a lot, got down the line a couple of times but not enough time to make a difference 6/10.

Timlin - I personally thought that we could have done with Eastons energy but I am not the manager....hardly kicked the ball when he came on...but wasnt on long anyway 6/10.

Overall...totally chuffed to be a Swindon fan last night, a good turnout and some great backing by the Town fans who totally outsang a poor home support, pathetic home support, leaving with 5 minutes left...fucking rubbish, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Still in awe of Austin's coolness in taking his goal...fantastic night.

I thought McGovern was better than a 7, he ran all night long and broke up their play fantastically, he just didn't link up on the wings as well as he normally does, but had some nice plays with Marshall and and Austin and was a big part of our energy at the start of the second half.

Oh my lord I'm cream crackered.

Just how good will Austin be after a full pre season training at professional levels?

Thought that was a classic away team performance.  Soaked up what they had to offer, had a period where they ran out of ideas and we looked like a hot knife going through butter, got the goal then parked a bus in front of the goal called Jean-Francois.  I love him, he's clearly not all there, but he's fun to watch, even if it sometimes is for the wrong reasons.  He was solid as a rock last night.

Either I was too drunk or there seemed a distinct lack of toilet facilities in our section of the ground, in fact I was dissapointed as it seemed rather lacking full stop for something that should be a top of the range modern stadium.

I ended up laid out on my back when Austin hit the back of the net, cracking times.  Another performance like that against Norwich and the Leeds game becomes very interesting.

accross the back 4,team player and always makes himself available.

Some comments from Saints fans -

Fair play to Swindon.. they've done the double over us this season, and seem to be much better organised than most.

Fair play to Swindon, they did their homework and totally nullified us tonight, easily the best team to come to SMS this season. We created plenty of half chances and Lambert hit the bar from long range but we never really looked like scoring. Swindon were very well organised and marked Puncheon out of the game, leaving Lambert and Barnard to feed off scraps. Very frustrating but the run of wins had to come to an end at some point. Hey ho there's always next season.

I cant add anything further to what Wayne said. No complaints from me, the best team won tonight

Totally agree. I was thinking this morning that I've never seen a Town side who wanted to win as much as those lads did last night. Just look at their reaction to the goal and at the final whistle and it tells you all you need to know.

A particular mention to JPM, who at one point made a challenge, chased the loose ball down, got crashed into by a Saints player, got up and then threw himself in the way of a clearance.

We were absolutley amazing, every single one off them gave everythinhg for the team, we've missed commintment like that for years. Our fans were brilliant, Saints were shit (nice ground tho')

Gutted about Cuthbert, and those fuckwit saints fans who layed into Scotty when he was clearly seriously injured. Lecs did brilliantly when he came on, best game he has played for us ever. I am still in awe at how well Austin finishes, his goal last night was sensational.

What a fucking game, what a fucking result, so proud to be a town fan!

I wasn't at Peterborough a year or so ago but I've heard and read a lot of comments praising Lecs for his performance at centre back that day. I did however see his performance last night, and taking all this into account I now feel less gutted about Cuthburt's injury. Don't get me wrong, I'm gutted for Scotty as he's been consistently superb for us, but at least we don't have to panic. I feel that Lecs will even provide us with added pace & aerial power.

Anyone who has a keen eye similar to mine will have noticed that last night's ref has a thalidomide disability in one arm (or as we used to say at school, "He is a flid."). It would have been good if he'd tried to grab his red card with this arm then we might have still had Ferry available for Saturday (I'm sure he has the personality to join in with piss-taking).

Really enjoyed last night's game, thought the commitment and effort got us that result (as well as our excellent backing  :) ). Charlie's dad was sat in front of me (according to two different people pointing it out). I have seen Lecs twice at centre half (incl posh away) and he has been superb. Hope we can keep the momentum going on Saturday.

By the way, have Saints got a trip to Wembley coming up? I am sure I heard it mentioned last night

We won there in the Southern League.

I saw that in the club shop, along with the large foam hands  :bye:. I popped in there to try and find a "present" for the Pompey fan at work.

Saints first ever match at The Dell was v Swindon....they beat us 4-1 and seem to have been beating us ever since...i remember Shilton playing brilliant at the CG in the cup and Rideout beating us in extra time in the replay..set up by a young Shearer.
Can also remember Matt le Tiss oozing class at the County Ground in the prem days..indeed a bogey team so a great win at last at there place.

We won there in the Southern League.

Last win there was in 57-58...in fact we also did the double that season...no doubt that the wait and size of the club makes it feel so much better, but it's still only 3 points.

I think that our very young reserve side went down 0-5 against Southampton Reserves tonight. Can't find any details of who played, scored, etc but the word was that Southampton were going to put a out a strong side so it's no surprise really!

I was in the Upper Tier of the Milton Road for that with a Soton fan from work - not a great day. later that season I went up to Villa with a Villa fan at work - 5-0. Since then work colleagues can fuck off when it comes to watching Town.

Just saw the goal on the BBC site. At first it looked miles offside but after lots of trying to pause it at just the right time, it looks as though the run and the through ball were perfectly timed.

Not that I'd be too concerned if the lino had cocked it up!

I could see it was onside from back here in Swindon.

Never in doubt.

Does the defender not get a slight deflection on it anyway, or am i seeing things.

If you mean in regards to it being offside then it doesn't matter - deflections don't count, its who played the ball last.

The way Austin went round the keeper is proper old skool, you never see players do it like that anymore.

Ferry's second booking looks even softer on the highlights, no wonder Sheehan responds the way he does to the player on the floor making a meal of it.

On the subject of who he reminds me of, in my mind there is one that Austin does remind me of.

A great goalscorer who hardly scored many headers or many long range efforts but was totally deadly in the box and good close control.

The great Ian Rush.

I thought that myself a couple of weeks ago, it's used to be part of the strikers art but seems to have disappeared from the game. Not sure why, but one possible reason is that a lot of strikers especially in the Prem tend to want to make contact with the keeper and take their chances getting a pen, e.g. AJ in the Fulham cup game, and tuck away the pen rather than try and slot from an acute angle.

Maybe Charlie has asked The Don for a few tips to take around the keeper.

Greaves was a master of it.

Greaves was a master of it.

Don wasn't too bad in one on ones with the keeper and passing it around. Crikey, if Jimmy Greaves was playing the moden game what would his value be compared with some of the millions spent on strikers who are poor finishers.

What's a real shame is that quite often the football media when talking about striker records only go back to 1992 and the start of the Premier League. Greaves and Brian Clough, the player, had fantastic goals to game ratios. Mike Ingham on 5 Live a few weeks ago did make the comment that Greaves was the greatest finisher he'd ever seen.

Both fucking champion drinkers too - imagine a night in the pub with these two. If the landlord would've refused a lock-in then he would've just been tied up & gagged until we were done. The cunt.
