I think the score will be Swindon with Three, and Gillingham nailing One. Unlike DMR.

I don't think that's odd. Maybe it's my skewed perception, but I always think that teams end shit runs against us.

Title: Re: Official Matchday Thread Town v Gills
Post by: Barry Scott on Saturday, January 16, 2010, 09:18:20
Gillingham will dominate, and go in at half time with a 2-0 lead. Then when we come out they will continue to dominate, and be unlucky not to score a few more.

The ref will then give 3 minutes extra time which prompts us to try a bit harder and we win 3-2 with one goal clearly offside, another a blatant handball and the other not actually crossing the line. Or a comfortable 3-0 town.

I can see us really being up for this one. We're playing well, we've got a good home run going. These lot aren't going to spoli it. It'll br interesting to see how many caravans make it to the CG for their "Cup Final".

I'm really looking forward to this one.

No, it's a bad thing. When people on this forum get over-confident we generally go on and lose badly, then those same people come back and slate the team.

I don't think that's odd. Maybe it's my skewed perception, but I always think that teams end shit runs against us.

I recall going to Chesterfield mid 00's, they hadn't won for the first 14 games or so that season...we were going ok, but had Deon Burton up front and Sebastian Ruster got on early.

We got destroyed by a little scuttler called Jamie Cade, and Marvin the Paranoid Android Robinson.  Cade I kept an eye on, but he did nothing after, and Marvin was so bad, he did sterling service, at the non league scum down the road, regularly getting mentioned in despatches, in their worst ever player lists....and that takes some doing.

Can't see us winning today...

The Stockport game next week is worrying me, they have lost the last 12 I think?

We have enough to beat Gillingham, not sure about hammering though.

Clean sheet please. We've not kept a clean sheet at home in the league since August.

1-0 with a goal from midfield. JPM or Douglas.

People think we allow teams to overturn runs of defeats when they play us, probably because we previously haven't had the management to maintain a consistent level of form. Wilson has shown that he's created a team that is confident and able to maintain a decent level of consistency.

I think that with Danny as manager both the Gills and Stockport will continue on their bad runs and we won't struggle.

The Stockport v Oldham game has been postponed and it doesn;t look good reading for our game on Tuesday. I've heard that the groundsheet has frozen to the actual pitch and if they tear it up the grass will come with it!!

I only live 10 minutes from Edgeley Park and this might be the 2nd time!! 3rd time lucky huh!!!

4-1 Swindon with billy paynter to score first and a vincent pericard hattrick ! ;) i agree barry before we would struggle against teams lower than us in the league i think we have learned not to become complacent shown by the amount of wins we have agaisnt teams lower than us in the table.

For some reason I'm getting more nervous about this. Form predicts a win for us and so does logic but... I hope Austin is feeling fit and sharp as it will probably be a bit early for Pericard to make a difference. That said I'm going for 2 - 1. Just as we do seem to concede a bit too easily at the moment.

In a nutshell yes, he had a good dig about agents as well. Sounds as though Paynter's agent might be playing silly buggers.

Probably more players coming in during this window as well.

Fuck. Sheehan out for that long?

Good win today anyway and we deserved it. Austin and Paynter were both good again. First half was average from us but second half we came back in to it and dominated once we got the 2nd. Pericard changed the game when he came on in some ways. Looks good.

Mini report:

First half Gills probably gave as good as they got, but we weren't seriously troubled. They also didn'y have Charlie Austin whose moment of supreme quality broke the deadlock.

Second hald: Murdered them at times. Odd second goal, well won header but keystone kop defending on the line. A well one penaly too. Ward could have had a couple. Douglas left the keepers hands stinging and a couple of quality moves. At 3-0 we just had to see the game out and as a result sat back a bit. But it was comfortable despite a well taken gills goal.

Big big negative is sheehan. I think we need a short term deal loan for a left back.

I m starting to think we're good enough for the play-offs

Maybe, just maybe! We have a lot of the top teams left to play though!

Good win today, and another very valuable 3 points.

Started slowly in the first half, but that's Swindon for you.

I thought we were a bit lucky to go in one up, but the second half we proved our worth, and easily deserved the victory, however unlucky we were not to get the clean sheet. Ferry was unlucky not to have a hat-trick, Ward's looking a quality loan signing, and is very versatile, and was also very unlucky not to score. Brilliant passing moves across the midfield and back four, there was one passing move in the second half involving Amankwaah, JPM and Pericard that had me in awe, and i felt the crowd were really up for it.

Overall, im a very happy bunny tonight :)

The boys did well today and I have passed on my thoughts in a thorough de-brief with young Daniel.

I have patted him on the back and handed him a brown envelope containing a extra well done that I would appreicate the FA not to find out about.

However, I have expressed disappointment at the goal that was conceded and have no incertain terms told Daniel that if we continue to concede such goals I will be forced to swap my finely pressed single breasted M & S suit for a tracksuit in order to help concentrate the defensive efforts!

I have a coaching badge .... Dont you know!  I havent mentioned this for a week or 2 ... but then I havent been back on the radio!  I'm much better than that Mr Radcliffe fella!

A superb 20 minute period when we really showed what we can do, sadly I thought the rest of the game a little nondescript.  Spoilt by a whistle happy ref who didn't know the difference between a foul and a dive, and classed everything as a foul!  Enjoyed Pericard's cameo, looks a useful signing - hope he can produce it every time.  Bet their keeper's hands will still be stinging on Monday with the strength of some of those shots he had to save.  Cuthbert had a good game, JP also.  Why does Manky turn it on in the second half more than the first?  Thought Greer and Lecs gave away too many free kicks around the box.

In previous seasons, it might have been and after so many years of disappointment I can see where you get the ingrained Eeyore tendency from. But it's not appropriate this season - we're playing well and winning games we'd have lost or drawn in the past two seasons. FWIW, I don't expect us to go up this season, but I do go to most games expecting us to get a decent result and (whisper it quietly) play well. Which is not only an enjoyable and refreshing change but, as our form this season shows, an appropriate attitude. Whereas your "balance" is simply out of kilter

Jon-Paul McGovern's corner was met by Scott Cuthbert's forehead for the second before Mark Bentley was brought down in the box by Vincent Pericard

Billy Paynter stepped up to put the game out of reach before Chris Palmer's consolation from the edge of the area.

Sheehan was shit today, especially in the 1st half when he was getting beaten for pace and out muscled time after time. LJF played far better once he came on, so I'm more than happy with the cover we've got at left back compared to other positions - especially right back.

Pretty much agree with this. Thought Gills looked pretty dangerous for the first 20mins, they have 2 or 3 nippy busy players (albeit with limited end product), No'S 10, 24 and the other black lad.  However, as mentioned 2nd half was a pleasure to watch from an STFC point of view.

You talk about passing moves above, Pericard did a beautiful little nick lay off into space for Ward running up on the left at one point, when I was convinced he was going to lose possession.
Pericard had an excellent debu in fact. Couldnit single anyone out today, all players had a good day (bar hutch, a liitle more running today but little product).

A final thought....good atmosphere, helped by the gills fans early on, BUT, who ever starts the clapping when the TE are alternately singing with the DRS, literally need their hands chopping off with a sword, middle east style.

Against Brighton after about 20 minutes. Sheehan played RB there and looked very unconfortable. If Caddis is signed for the rest of the season he can play RB and would be good cover.

I thought he was OK myself and gave good overlapping options in attack.

On JPM, I think the clapping the stands was just a 'thanks for the support'. He usually does it.

I'd be gutted if he left, I honestly believe he is pulling the strings in our attack wtih his vision and passing.

JPM's an intelligent player and his applauding the fans simply shows he knows who he has to thank for his livelihood.  Wish a few more would follow his example.

As others have said, I'm enjoying being a Town fan this season...even if I can't make as many games as I'd like.  The only disappointment for me today was the size of the crowd.  As we move towards the business end of the season, I would hope we'll start pulling in a few more as (hopefully) a play off place comes in to sight.  Let the good times roll.

I know what you are saying, especially after the Fulham turnout and the lack of footy due to the weather.

But then again there are a lot of games coming up, and most people won't have been paid since before Christmas.

Lets hope if the team keep playing well they bring the extra punters in that their performances deserve.

first half we were rubbish and fortunate to go in 1 up(great strikers goal by austin)
second half we were well on top and their keeper did well for them.
pericard looks a player to me and wont be happy sitting on the bench for long.
i dont get the ferry love in as he's too lightweight and awful infront of goal.
puts all the effort in but aint all that.
for me we are a goalscoring centre mid away from a side that has a real chance of the play offs.

I haven't looked at the figures but I'm fairly sure that crowds rose quite markedly in the build up to our play off campaigns in 1992/93 and again in 2003/04.  Gives the floating support a proper reason to get up off their arses and go.

The first half was a bit of a non event other than Austin's absolutely class goal - good build up and a brilliant turn and finish. Thier right winger was giving Sheehan a good going over but with fuck all end product - like the Pikeys in general.
In the second half we played some brilliant stuff. There was one move in particular where their keeper made a brilliant double save. In a 20 minute patch we could have scored 6 or 7. Cuthbert's goal was the kind of goal we conceded last season. Pericard looks a very useful signing - he's a big unit who just isn't going to get knocked off the ball - hence the penalty - and he's got a brain as well.
Both Ferry and Ward picked up bloody stupid and deserved bookings.
The Pikeys were truly shit and they're going to need to park thier caravans across thier own goal and use up their stock of lucky heather if they're going to stay up.

A lot of people over egg the Championship. It really aint all that good. If we were to get promoted we would most likely be the equivalent to a barnsley or a scunthorpe. Of course with investment we would push on, but if that happens it remains to be seen.

I haven't seen the highlights, but I remember saying at the time, "How the fuck did the defender not clear that off the line?"

One defender seemed to walk backwards to head it, the other defender then pushed him forward out of the way putting himself off balance then he tried to clear it only to completely miss it.

I thought he was OK myself and gave good overlapping options in attack.

I don't think Sheehan is as good as most people make out, or that LJF is as bad as most people make out.

Sheehan made more mistakes in the first half than JFL made in entire games that he got slated for. I'm still not sure which is the best at left back, if we could morph them in to one player take the best bits from both we'd have a star.

Sheehan is as good as people make out, just not today.

LJF is clearly a confidence player like Ifil. The team was winning and playing well when he came on and he slotted right in and played well.

Maybe you are right. But I've not seen a Sheehan mistake that has lead to a goal (cue lots of examples :)).

LJF has cost us goals. It's a shame because he has also made goals and played well for large portions of games. Then he'll have that Jeril Ifil moment where his brain switches off.....

Maybe JFL will cut this out of his game and prove me wrong. I hope so.

edit: FFS. Dave posted what I was trying to say before I said it again.

Manky getting forward in the 2nd half made a big difference today. He stayed back for most of the 1st. JFL did alright when he came on - he's still learning. We won well with some players not playing great. Sheehan was well dodgy but would still be a good signing. Ward should have put 2 of his 3 chances away. Paynter was OK but below recent form.
The good news is we beat them easily and we'll play better another day. Thier keeper also kept the score down.

Some great football the second half.............we're actually looking a decent side now.
Will miss Sheehan though.

We stuffed the Pikey's.

The goal thing is a bit unfair on LJF, in a lot of those goals I'd pin a portion of the blame on the rest of the team and especially the central defenders - the first two Bristol Rovers goals for example. Other than that he's just been unlucky compared to Sheehan whose slip ups haven't cost us.

I just hope Wilson doesn't give up on LJF as there is a legend in there somewhere if he can sort out his confidence and concentration. Don't know what it is but there is something about him I like.

We won well with some players not playing great.

An excellent one line summary of the game. Being able to do that is the difference between a relegation battle and a promotion battle - last season we would have lost the game badly.

It looked like a hamstring or groin injury. I think Wilson said 4-6 weeks if it is what they think, which fits. But its not confirmed yet, I guess they'll let it settle for a day and asses it then.

Seen the goals as well. Austin's was a class finish, but as you say, how on earth did the muppet show on the line not keep out Cuthbert's looping header?

How sad people would rather take video's than celebrate a Swindon goal.

I mean, who watches penalties anyway?

Austin turned the game around with an instinctive strike, more evidence that he gets the important goals when the game is tight.

I too am mental as I agree with johnny 72. Sheehan would be a good addition but he's not a latter day Zippy or King. JFL is also not the anti christ- he's a young lad with a lot of potential who played their right winger better today than Sheehan.

Some players are highlights players, who will do a few good things in a game. Lescinel is the total opposite, where he will play well for 88 minutes, but the other 2 minutes he will make blunders that cost you goals.

I think hes a decent player in the making though. Certainly provides us with better options, a luxury when you consider our options in the past.

I like Sheehan and at the moment would prefer him to play in preference to LJF but he in no way deserves the extent of crap he gets. He had a poor opening game, as did the whole team, then largely did well until Rovers when he had a mare (again as did most of the rest of the team, most of who didn't get half the abuse he got - the two goals he was at fault for started with our centre collapsing, leaving him exposed, although he should also have done better). And then after that his confidence collapsed. Hopefully a good performance today will have helped him rebuild that a little as I think he could grow into a real find, if he can sort out those lapses.

I haven't really slagged LJF off too much, but I have to say when I've seen him he's not impressed.
I didn't see much of him before the Rovers game, but he had an absolute shocker then and was lucky to make it to half time without being subbed. I seem to remember him making a few silly mistakes against Brighton the week after, and at Charlton he made three absolutely basic errors in the first 15 minutes.

If what he needed was a break, then thank goodness it came about and I'll look forward to seeing him as part of a strong Town defence in the coming weeks.

Right, which is precisely what I said - had a mare at Rovers and then his confidence collapsed. But that isn't how he's played for the majority of the season and not his "natural" game. Don't base your judgement on those three games

Cant be arsed to trawl the whole thread, but I haven't seen any comments on that lazy cunt Hutchinson's non-performance today.

I agree. I just want Hutchinson gone.

About the video - I was going nuts celebrating the other 2 goals then at 2-0 up we got a penalty and I thought I'd get a cool little video of it. I was pleased with it and I thought other people would enjoy it. It wasn't a crucial goal we needed to win the game.

Fuck all wrong with posting the video of BP's pen. I enjoyed watching it again.

Touche Spencer.

I suspect everyone enjoys going to games with the lads, getting caught up in a police march and missing the first 15 minutes of a game. Different strokes for different folks. At least we're all there to support the team and that's what matters the most.

Honestly, I havnt been in an escort since Nottingham Forest away 2008. The two trips to Gills since then they just stand on street corners, which is slightly difference from an escort.

Unfortunately a lot of the lads I used to go with have sort of melted away.

The last time I can remmember missing game time because of police was actually a home game. Lincoln City at home about 3 years ago, they wouldnt let us out of the CGH!

Town were okish for first 20 but held thier own and looked as if we were going to piss it at the death...Gill keeper was a real hero.

The new Frenchman looks good but time will tell...good enough start.

Bit of atmosphere as well........We must try and bring Ray McHale back for a game!!
