Title: Swindon Town vs. Fulham Official Matchday Thread

Fucking buzzing for this. I don't really care about the result, as long as we make a good account for ourselves.

Gonna be messy that's for sure, I always knew beer and cornflakes was an immense idea.

Think we could actually cause an upset today.

It's going to be a tough one!

But as Sam said, a good showing and a bit of a laugh as a minimum. Isn't it about time we actually caused an upset?

I'm quite ridiculously over-excited about this game. Like Sam says, not expecting (but I am hoping it) to get anything from it, but I've been like a kid waiting for Christmas all week. I've proper annoyed the missus :)

I'm stupidly excited too. It's bizarre at my great age. I just hope for a good performance - and a replay. Actually I'm just hopng for a good performance, after that well it would be a bonus.

Unlikely seeing as ITV have the FA Cup rights.

There can be few teams with such a poor Cup record in recent years.  I was thinking along the same lines yesterday, as it happens.  As someone who has been watching since 1990, I couldn't remember a single occasion where we had beaten a top flight club in the Cup.  Just had a look on soccerbase.com and see the game you're referring to was a replay against Norwich.  I also see that we drew Newcastle in the next round and got stuffed 5-0...an unfortunate result in more ways than one, as we were to find to our cost a couple of years later.

So when was the last time we beat a team from a higher division?  I think I remember getting a result against Southampton or Oldham (?) in the mid-1990s, but could be wrong.

One for the stattos then...have we ever beaten a team from two divisions higher than us, or even drawn?

(Obviously counting only the FA Cup here.  Our League Cup record in this respect is well known, even to those of us born after 1969.)

One of my first games was the game vs Fulham in the 70's. We beat Moore, Best Marsh et al 5-0 Sure that was a Cup Replay

i've had a soft spot for fulham since the days of jean tigana.

Fulham, along with the likes of Blackburn and Wigan, belong to a clutch of clubs I've never had much time for on the grounds that they basically bought their place in the Premiership.  I can't think of anything more sterile and dull.

In a similar vein, if Fitton/Arbib were to say to DW:

Here you go, Danny.  Here's £150 million.  Go off and buy some players.

and then we ended up in the Premiership ourselves, I'd probably give up all together.  What would be the point?  As it is, I'm really not sure what the point of Fulham FC really is.  Nice ground, though.

Good battling performance, but lacked quality in final third. Did have a couple of half chances but didn't trouble the goal. Mom. Any one of paynter, douglas and sheehan. Even hutchingson ran a bit.! We moved the ball around very nicely at times. Just no end product around the box. Lost a bit of cross quality with jpm in middle.

That was like watching Swindon before we had Austin. Plenty of the ball but it didn't lead to many chances. We pretty much bossed the 2nd half with Fulham attacking on the break.

Douglas was mom by a mile for me, he dominated the middle of the pitch.

Good performance from Town today. We just didn't quite have that cutting edge, and when we did show glimpses of attacking flair we didn't take our chances - Douglas, Ferry and Hutchison all had chances where they could perhaps have done better.

Hutchison was a surprise choice but actually put in some effort today and lokoed reasonable - as has been said, perhaps he thought a game at Fulham was worthy of his effort?! Sheehan had a decent game, as did Amankwaah, but MOTM has to go to Douglas. He bossed the middle of the park, diffusing a lot of attacks and remaining very calm on the ball under pressure. JPM and Ferry did well alongside him making tackles and spreading the play.

Also, a big mention to the stewards today. The ones around the perimeter of the pitch were fine. But whoever decided to get a row of stewards and coppers to stand in front of the away end so nobody could watch the game was taking the piss. It was a good showing from the Town fans today and everybody seemed to be very well behaved - there was no need for it, thankfully they saw sense and got out of our way after a while.

Douglas was immense. Thought we outplayed them first half and created some clear cut chances. They seemed to figure Douglas out second half and didn't let him have so much of the ball.

Douglas and JPM were brilliant today, very good possession and hardly wasted a ball. I thought Amankwaah had a very poor 1st half but improved slightly when Wilson swapped Ward and Hutchinson around in front of him.

Great Swindon crowd today and Fulham should be ashamed of their support.

Got To Fulham early...stayed in the Eight Bells till kick off,,didnt realise the ground was so far from the underground...or the pub..brilliant Town support and we started well...dont know who made the mistake but they scored a soft goal...thaught it was a penalty myself but thaught we should have had one as well.
Paynter played brill first half along with Douglas who was class.
Second half we huffed and puffed...Timlin on for Ward was strange but in truth it didnt matter.
We kind off went out of the cup with a whimper, not a bang...JPM was my MOM he was superb.
A class disciplined performance, but the 0-0 at Wolves..the 0-1 v Fulham and the 0-0 v Norwich sort of shows you what ware lacking....well played Town,a good honest performace but in truth not very exiting.

Just got back, good day out, not an incredible game of football but we put up a good fight.

Johnson played for the penalty at the very least, something which he has a bit of previous in, but luckily for us his shot was absolutely woeful, slightly left of centre along the floor. If Lucas had gone the other way it would probably of hit his legs.

As for our players, Douglas was, as others have said immense, as was Sheehan who simply must be signed. Ben Hutchinson gave his best performance in a Swindon shirt, although I'm not sure that's saying much.

All in all, creditable and about as good as I'd hoped.

Thought Sheehan was also fantastic today and has to sign perm in Jan. A close call for MOTM but Douglas edged it for me.

Thought Cuthbert was also excellent as was JPM.

Although my reaction at the time suggested otherwise, itt was a penalty, there was contact. I think I was mostly angry at the way Johnson hit the floor so incredibly quickly, and justice was served when he hit a piss poor shot straight at Lucas.

Oh, and although it was a very long way away, it looked like a blatant push on Macklin at the other end.

The way we are playing is a joy to watch. Shows what quality Wilson is able to bring in and how to get the best out of his players. He's definitely shown that there is no room for passengers in this team and every player seems to give it his all to keep his place. I haven't seen such a 'team' feeling amongst a Swindon side in a very long time.

Agree with most of what's already been posted, we did very well against what was a pretty strong Fulham team.

Let's just hope it was good enough to persuade some of the first timers who went today to stick with us & visit the county ground.

For what it's worth I thought it was a penalty, although was still good fun giving AJ some abuse, however the foul on Lloyd also looked like a pen.

Met quite a few Posh fans at cockfosters, at least we did better than them :)

Great atmosphere and thought the game should have been a draw overall.

First half was pretty even but Fulham created the better chances.

Second half it was mianly Swindon, but we didnt really create too many clear cut chances.

In a weird way im glad we are out of the cup as we can now concentrate on our playoff push.

Great turnout by the fans today, and i could only recall Fulham singing twice.  Once after they scored, and also when Zoltab Gera came on

hutch was the poorest of our players but he did alright.he wasn't that bade was he? the side footed shot was a wasted chance.but we wasted every chance didn't we.ferry passed the ball wide when directly infront of the goal 3 times, and ballooned a good chance yet people are raving about his performance.even douglas took too many touches when in the box when he could have shot.
i fully agree about payner being isolated but we did create chances first half so you cannot argue really.wilson did change it later to his credit.
we should take alot out of today as we gave fulham a good game and tested them for sure.
all the lads including hutch played their part

A fantastic day out and a decent performance overall. The atmosphere was superb all day, a lovely start with a fry up and a couple of pints of London Pride at Paddington, then into the Kings Arms in Putney, where the atmospere really started building. Lovely walk to the ground down by the river, and into the ground, which was a pleasant surprise. As somebody else mentioned, the stewards were paricularly friendly, although it did get a bit nasty with the Met at the end of half time, not sure what it was all about.

On to the game, nobody disgraced themselves, but the two wide boys didn't do anything. The midfield three of JD, JPM and Ferry were superb, and showed they could play at the level above. Greer was at fault for the goal but recovered well, and as a unit we defended quite well, we just lacked the final ball.

If we had a second striker of any quality we might have had a chance. MOTM for me would have to be either Sheehan or Cuthbert. Sheehan done very little wrong and was also one of our biggest threats going forward. After a string of average left backs over the last couple of years, he really looks like he could play there for the next 3 or 4 years and become a mainstay for us. Cuthbert is just class, how we signed I'll never know, and I'd be shocked if half the Championship are tracking him.

Fulham played within themselves and never looked uncomfortable, but we can be proud of the performance and build on it next week at MK.

Great day out, shame we couldn't sneak a draw.

Dont really agree with the Hutchinson semi praise, tries to do the wrong things in the wrong areas. Had our best to chances on goal and for a 'striker' they were tame efforts straight at the keeper. Send him packing asap.

Douglas - class. Ferry - brilliant, JP - brilliant.

Neither of those 3 deserved to be on the losing side, Douglas was the best player on the pitch imo.

Paynter had a good game too, wish one of hutchinson's chances had fallen to him

Great day. The junior Wigs had both their first away game and their first trip to London. Shame is that for all our effort we didn't have anyone willing to pull the trigger in and around the box. That isn't meant to sound negative - I thought we were fantastic.

Hutchinson is still poo. We should try and sign Sheehan.

The DRS and Arkells will seem noisy compared to the home bits of Craven Cottage.

What a great turnout by Town fans today,i saw fans travelling to the game and going home,
from all over the south of england.Well done everybody!

Douglas is simply class and we're lucky to have him,he's our best player and the fulcrum of
the side.It felt like there wasn't a weak link and i thought all the players gave maximum effort
and can be pleased with their performances. With our fantastic support if was a shame that we
weren't attacking the Putney End in the 2nd half.

Just a note to our midfield, don't always try to play the perfect pass, have a go from the edge
of the box,you never know what might happen.

Danny please get Sheehan signed up as soon as possible.I also think we need a goalscoring
midfielder who has the ability to support and get beyond the strikers.I know Danny's looking
at improving all areas of the squad.

Hopefully, today will reignite the enthusiasm for our fanbase and we'll continue to grow
as a club, both on and off the pitch.

He did at least put some effort in, granted. But that's only really worth commenting on because he doesn't normally and it's the bare minimum you should expect of any player. And without the "excuse" of not trying because he can't be bothered, it turns out he's just a bit shit.

But I'd rather focus on the rest of the team who did us proud. And we in turn, I think, did them, ourselves and the club proud.

Quite right,he was the last player or official to come off the pitch, but wasn't intimidated at all.

However,i don't think he liked the chants of, "You'll never play for England!".

Just got back and to echo a load of previous statements, it was a great day out.  Drove down, parked in shepherds bush sent the wife and kiddies off to the natural history museum with a mate.

On to the game, we played most of the football.  Fulham seemed to have one main tactic, lump it to Zamora to knock down to Johnson.  As has been said, we really lacked cutting edge.  Douglas, Ferry and JPM bossed midfield a lot of the time, Paynter held up well and though Ward is clearly one for the future the understanding wasn't as good as BP has with Charlie boy.

The penalty was stonewall, but I cant believe no one has mentioned that Zamora blatantly pulled Greers shoulder to put him off balance and win the ball on the wing in the move which resulted in the pen.  No problem with Johnson really.

The support from Fulham was pathetic, from us mostly wonderful.  Sang from minute 1 to 94.

The only bad point I had was the retards club in front of me.  Group of 7 or 8 lads in their seats got their mates down so there was about 15 in the space for 8 and started pushing each other around, not watching the game and generally fucking off everyone else.  An old fella and his missus disappeared at half time as they were so pissed off and a bloke with a 7 year old son had to move the second time they hilariously pushed one of thier number into the back of them.  1 was thrown out and I was quite happy to see them surrounded by coppers being questioned on the way back.
I know I sound like a grouchy old cunt but they were the cunts and I was ashamed they were Swindon fans.  Having said that they looked pretty plastic to me.

Anyway good day out, proud of the boys and most of our support.

Well I thought we played well and were unlucky to come away with nothing. Our passing was very good and had we had better wigners (both O'Brien and JP not playing on the wing today) we could have created a lot more. Same goes for the formation. 4-4-2 and maybe we'd have got something? Douglas was superb today. He showed exactly why he used to be a Premier League footballer a few years back. We're very lucky to have a player of such quality. Ferry and JP also played well and they run the show from midfield.

I have to say though that despite all of the above we still had not creation or cutting edge. We reallly missed Charlie Austin today. He gets into the positions and creates attacks first off. We could have really done with a fox in the box today. I think today is a little bit of evidence that he has been the difference between us winning and drawing since he began to start.

A good day out that hopefully shows Fitton the potential of the fanbase. Drank in the Boathouse in Putney before the game - good mix of Town and Fulham. Douglas was pure class today - if only he pulled the trigger a bit earlier in the first half.  Agree about Hutchinson that he showed more effort but he's still a uselees lazy selfish cunt who despite raising his game was still pure shit. Ferry put in a decent shift as did JPM. Cuthbert did one quality tackle in the 2nd half right in front of us.
Johnson was a wanker but fair play to him at the end.
As for their goal, like JFL, Greer does not like the ball played over him or when he's on the back foot. Zamora took the goal well but Greer was outmuscled very easily.
Great support today but it lookedl ike it was going to kick off in the Dickens Inn near Paddington when I left at 8. If it did, there was no need for it. If it didn't then good. Somefans can't handle their ale.
Oh yes, and if it was a Town fan who put the windown  through of the 8:06 then you are a fucking retard.

Good day it was,

Drank in the Kings Arms, t'was fucking buzzin.
Atmosphere was good, bit hard to get a song going at the start though, but picked up. Thought Ferry was quality as well as Sheehan and Cuthbert. Dempsey wasnt good at all for them, Greening was there best player i thought ran the middle.

Nice to see so many Swindon fans as expected, but will be interesting to see how many come next week, hopefully 1,000+ but can't see it.

What a fuckin day, absolutely mint.

Thought we played very well without much cutting edge. Initial impressions given I've hardly seen us play for a year: Douglas = god, JPM = improved loads but still a bit of a wimp when he needs to get stuck in, Ward = potential to be class, touch of Coxy about some of his movement, Greer = fuckin hopeless, Lucas = god, Sheehan = god, everyone else decent.

I'm very drunk n very tired, so some/all of that may be deemed nonsense.

Proud Town fan today.

If we played like that against any league one team we'd have won. Ah well, nowt more to add then that really.

Special mention to the retard in front of me though, discussion paraphrased as follows:

Me: Oooooh paynter got a bit head down there, he had two players in to his left.
Twat In Front: Fuck off, get behind the team. I bet your one of those day trippers here because its a big team.
M: No, i have a season ticket and have had one for a few seasons now.
T I F: Bet you sit in the arkells dont you, miserable fuck
M: No, Don Rogers actually
T I F: Yeahhh, you're all the same. Bet you wont't be at wycombe next week (????)

I decided to end there, as i wasn't going to win against someone who is an obviously better fan than i am. The fact the Twat In Front then went on to lay into hutchinson at every single oppurtunity only added to the irony

As everyone before has said Douglas was in a class of his own, best player on the pitch. I dont think any Town player let the club down. I feel we were robbed not getting a replay.

Zamora what a brut of a player, he just out-muscled Greer for the goal, and he would do that to many centre halfs in the Prem, so not going to blame Greer for the goal, the only way he could possibly stop him was to bring him down, concede a penalty and we would be down to ten men.

Johnson what a prick - there might have been contact but he went over very easily as he has done all his career.

Not sure if it has been mentioned earlier, the police coming out with 10 minutes to go and standing facing the Swindon supporters and then leaving to go back from where they came from with cheers from us of 'you don't know what you're doing', very funny.

ITV highlights, Swindon get about 30 seconds, the goal and the penalty is all they show.

Didnt get home until 09.30, pretty pissed, quality day out. Hope those stay away home fans who went to the game and experienced a fantastic atmosphere will turn up the Gillingham game in a couple of weeks time.

Echo most of whats been written on here.

Was meeting friends on the 10.40 ish train from swine to paddington. I got to the station early and witnessed about 3 or 4 earlier trains set off, each one choc a block with town fans - a lovely sight.
Along with Chalkies Shorts, we also drunk in the boathouse beforehand. A nice pub but I personally would have preferred a sing song.

As for the game, agree with pretty much everything that has been written on here, but a few more observations for what its worth:

 - although Hutchinson was on the whole ineffective (on two seperate occasions amankwah had the ball on the wing and the position was crying out for a hutch overlap and he just stood there on the line like a lemon, seemingly clueless), ironically, I did feel that when macklin came on for hutch we seemed to lose a little cohesion and bite. Macklin was poor I thought.

 - twas a shame we weren't shooting towards the our fans in the second half, I think that would have given us the edge to snatch something.

 - twas also a shame our midfielders didnt chance a punt at goal on the numerous occasions when they were camped just oputside the box in the 2nd half, doesn't have to be a screamer, all it takes is a lucky ricochet to mix things up a little.

 - Great effort by us on the atmosphere front, shame we didnt quite manage to get wise men say going properly though.

 - Had a quick drink in the Sports bar over the bridge after the game and then onto a pub just ouitside earls court tube for a couple more. Saw town fans dotted everywhere all night. Again, a lovely site and lets hope we can have some more aways days like that in the future.

Finally, as my travelling companion noted on journey home whilst discussing Fulham fans lack of vocal support, "I would hate to support a team like Fulham" !!

ps. would be nice to see a pic of the away end, if anyone can find one.
ps2 ITV highlights were shite (as is the whole program)
ps3 fair play to carlisle, good turn out, and they had a goal to cheer

Good performance from the team, particularly the midfield who certainly didn't look like they belonged two divisions below the opposition. Hutchinson may have put in a bit more effort, but was ineffective and simply not good enough, he really shouldn't feature in our side again and I will be completely bemused if his loan is extended. Sheehan needs to be made a permanent signing, he really completes a competent defence.

Fulham did look dangerous going forward, and from where I was it looked like a stonewall penalty. The actual spot kick itself was absolutely laughable though, although not as laughable as their home support. Were they actually there, or do Fulham use cardboard cutouts to fill their stands?

Our support was excellent, I really hope that the atmosphere and performance can boost our home gates for the rest of the season.

The only downside of the day was the utterly inept policing on the 20:00 from Paddington, where First Great Western and British Transport Police decided to halt and then cancel the train at Reading as the result of what sounded like a bit of 'High spirited' behaviour from town fans in one of the rear carriages. The result was an awful lot of pissed up and pissed off fans being held on the platform for the best part of an hour and then being herded onto the next train coming . From what I heard on the platform it was a total overreaction.

Good post but a bit harsh on Macklin-he seemed to be fouled pretty much every time he got the ball and looked a decent shout for a pen-spose we'll never know as the highlights only showed the goal and pen.

It was a top day out yesterday and I thought we did ourselves proud.

Douglas was by far the best player on the pitch and we must sign Sheeman, he is class. Paynter and JPM were both class.

The Fulham fans were awful but the atmosphere we generated was brilliant, shame we don't seem to have a following luke that all the time.

I think we can be proud of ourselves and IMO we were good value for a draw.

anyway, on the subject of the game, think its all been said other than wished we'd have had a bit more of a go but just lacked that cutting edge

Fulham did the minimum they needed to go through, much the same as us against Woking.

I thought we more than matched them in the centre of midfield but everywhere else they were better, which is what you'd expect from a team in the top 10 of the premiership.

The match itself wasn't great, but that didn't matter as the main thing about yesterday was the day and the fantastic support from the Town fans.

Back to the real business now........

Did you know that the church to left of Putney bridge was used for the Omen1 film when the priest gets it? Beautiful place to walk around did you go in and have a look Leefer?

Secondly what was the rumpus about at half-time behind the stand, looked like about 10 Swindon fans being thrown out, don't know why.

Had a good day yesterday (except the result). All mostly been said. I agree particularly with whats been said about Douglas and Sheehan. One concern though as has been mentioned is our reluctance of having a pop at goal from the edge of the box. Reminded me of the Charlton game which did for us when we could have put that game out of sight. Hope this is addressed for the rest of the season. Still great effort though and what a fine sight the Town fans made filling the Putney end.

The logic of cancelling the train and then telling everyone to get on the next one which was already pretty full seemed a touch flawed. The guy who was drunkenly threatening to sue Great Western and British Transport police made me smile though.

Yesterday... wow! So proud of everyone connected to the club. Couldn't fault any element of Town's involvement in the day. Highlights for me included the penalty save, the sight - from kick-off - of the away end packed to the rafters (I was confined to the prawn sandwiches...!) and in full voice. One of the proudest days as a Town fan on reflection. Being London-based I get my fairt share of stick from all directions. Quite a few of those happy to dish the banter were in attendance yesterday and were utterly gobsmacked at our collective performance yesterday.

The perceived 'joke club' of the past 10-odd years is very much a thing of the past and very much means business.

Massive congrats to all. Here's to a hugely prosperous 2010.

I went into the churchyard near to the stone gates?...was nice but didnt go into the church on account of my mate staggering about after pissing his trousers..was a real feel of history around the ground though Dell and intend to have a moochy round that part of London this year again.
Got to say also that the barstaff in the eightbells worked incredibly hard and to keep the punters happy in a small pub was well done...the landlady explained that due to a local resident complaining was the reason why no drinks were allowed outside...was in there from 12 till two.

The one or two changes to the side did cost us. We looked scared to give the ball away to Fulham.

Cant say we deserved an equaliser and it was a massive blow to lose such an early goal. Defenders did very well to keep us in the game after that, while its 1-0 you can always get a deflected flukey equaliser to take it to a replay.

Obviously great support. It was fantastic to see all the lads in the pubs before the game. Everyone properly getting a high off it and having a great time. Great part of London, great ground. Got down there at 10.30am and went to a Spoons in East Putney. By the time we moved on at midday, all the pubs near the ground were already packed with Town fans. The only one that was empty was the Golden Lion who wouldnt let Town fans in (we tried).

What is so funny about my elderly dad being physically unable to stand up to watch an entire football match?

I suppose you also think its funny that he was in agony walking to and from the coaches.

What is so funny about my elderly dad being physically unable to stand up to watch an entire football match?
I suppose you also think its funny that he was in agony walking to and from the coaches.
Fortunately the people sat in the few rows in front of us were really good when I explained and stayed in their seats for pretty much all of the match, even though it meant their view was blocked a bit.

why did you not asked to be moved then? There were plenty of seats in the stand to the left which had Swindon fans in it. Instead of moaning you should've done that.

Our section to the left at the front of p6 were asked to sit. Did for part of the game. My other half and I actually offered two elderly people to swap seats as they couldn't see.  It's hard not to stand when you get caught up in the atmosphere, especially yesterday but that's what it's like and most regulars will always try standing where possible.  That's pretty standard.

Some woman behind said to a steward "sorry but we can't see when they stand up" and the steward said "well we've done everything we can but unfortunately your fans have a reputation for standing".

You were about 8 rows in front / slightly to the left of me Luci. The people to your right did sit down when first asked by the steward, but the people a couple of rows in front of me decided not to copy them. It was OK for the terracing days because if you didn't like where you stood you could just move somewhere else.

There was one woman behind us (we were in row B) who insisted on sitting down. As she was pretty much directly behind me I sat down, except for exciting moments (whenever we got the ball in their half). At half time, I was incredibly pissed off to see her stood up for the full 15 minutes, so decided to stand for the whole second half, like everybody else was.

What time did you get there? I had a burger in the park, next to the church. It came in a nice soft roll, and was a big fat chunk of meat with a generous helping of cheese and onions. One of the best burgers I've had at/before a game

I had a decent enough bacon and egg roll from inside the caff.  Quite happy with that.  They let me in the ground with a coffee as well.  That wouldn't happen at the CG.

Cracking day out, Joined my mates on the train at Didcot through to London. Had two 6 fingered lads walk by and yell SCUM as I got off the train from Cholsey to Didcot. There were plenty of Swindon at Didcot station,  The chants of RED ARMY at Paddington Tube station was ace!

Went to the 8 Belles which was chocker but got served quick and had a sing song! Inside the ground the atmosphere was ace. The food was good and stood all game towards the back. Our fans were ace. Could hear the chants of RED ARMY across the park.

1-1 would have been a great result. All our players looked good even that donkey Hutchinson, He probably figured that the people at Celtic would be watching him as it’s a big game. JP and Douglas were the pick of the litter I think. Fulham, great club but their fans are very very quiet.

The trip back after the game was not great though thanks to the O.B. As I was going to Wallingford to see my gf, I got off the train at Reading to which I was cornered by 3 police who asked where why I got off at Reading as I was wearing a Swindon shirt. Well there was 2 reasons, 1) I was going to Wallingford and had to get the bus from Reading and 2) the train went through to Penzance via Newbury and not Swindon via Didcot anyway. I explained to the police that I was going to Wallingford etc. The copper then said, “we are on the lookout for any Swindon fans causing trouble” and then one of the British Transport Police made me walk in front of a camera as the OB were filming us  getting off the train which was fine and then he stood with me at the bus stop in Reading outside the train station to make sure I got on a bus to Wallingford.  Bloody ridiculous. Apparently there were some issues at Reading later on so perhaps I can understand why they were on edge. But come on, I’m soft as fuck (in more ways than one) I’m not going to cause any problems or get in a row with anyone. Someone would knock me on my fat arse and it would resemble a turtle stuck upside down on it’s shell.

OB are cnuts. I remember trying to leave Elm Park early once, not because we were 3-0 down but because I had a bar job to get to in the evening. They wouldn't let me cos they thought I'd cause trouble, even though I'm soft as sh*te and had no Town shirt on or anything.

fuckers. I later got bottled at Reading station, and they did nothing.

Yeah with 5800 people or whatever it was maybe it did depend slightly where you were stood. Thankfully I was stood just to the right of the goal right at the front with some boisterous lads next to me. Although wherever you were it wasn't long before you heard another song was it? Especially in the second half the singing seemed almost continuous.

@ Spy - I believe I may have been one of those boisterous (sp?) lads stood near you  :D Was meant to be sat higher up i think but didnt wanna sit on my own so sat with about 10 or so mates.

Atmosphere was brilliant all day, from arriving in Paddington all the way to putney bridge we were singing.. even when we went to Stamford bridge for a nosey round  :D

The team could've done more but i'm quite pleased with 1-0.. could've been worse.

I checked who was behind me before I stood all game. Luckily, by me everyone was standing.

I know how frustrating it is when you've got a small child with you whose view is obstructed, although usually it isn't a problem as there's loads of space.

I thought the atmosphere was pretty good, loads of singing even though most people were seperated from those they usually stand with.

Very uneventful train journey back to Swindon, spent it asleep (There's a surprise!)

some bloke went mental at a steward as his small kid got knocked into by some pissed up twat in the wrong seat.

The point is what could fans do, I was in Row RR, we sat down just before the kick-off and so did those behind us. Waited for a minute couldn't see fuck all, so no other option than to stand, RR is more than two-thirds up and every bugger ahead of us was standing.
Kids around us just stood on seats we had three in front of us, we told the father that would be the best option and if they looked a bit unsteady we promised to keep our eyes on them so they did not fall. Nothing more anyone can do. If the stewards had made those at the front sit, which is there job in an all-seater stadium then probably the rest of the crowd would have followed suit.

I think I must have been in about the only part of the stand where the stewards were making any effort to get us to sit down (front of P6) for the first half at least. Ended up sat on top of the seat, which was a bit of a compromise but still couldn't see anything on the right hand side of the pitch.

It felt like pretty much the whole stand was singing "And it's Swindon Town..."

I think it is a shame that after such a great day out where 98% of the crowd enjoyed standing up and watching the game there are a few people complaining that we all should have been sat down??!

It's simple really. At other games you will be able to move so you can sit down but at games where we sell out our allocation you need to either ensure you have a seat where you can sit (eg at the front) or make some kind of arrangements with the club. I think it would be bad if everyone was always forced to sit. I'm sure the vast majority of our fans don't want that. People seemed to manage fine with terracing back in the old days didn't they?!

I would always prefer to stand and would never go into the seating area when terracing was available at games, but it is not anymore. People pay more money to go to games these days (Fulham was a cheap day though) to sit, that is the way the game has gone and the game has moved on regarding comfort and facilities available.

I do understand the problem, but at the same time anybody who went EXPECTING the whole stand to remain seated was slightly deluded. And what do these old (but not disabled) people do when the ball gets near the goal and everybody stands up? I'd have been tempted to try and switch seats with somebody for that reason alone.

I was sat in Row B with 5 mates and we would have gladly traded places with somebody much further back so we could stand and they could sit.

we're going round in circles here. basically for that game he should have been in a wheel chair. if he was walking in loads of pain and couldn't stand then he should have sat in a wheel chair.

Also if not all kids can stand on chairs then they should go on a diet :)

we're going round in circles here. basically for that game he should have been in a wheel chair. if he was walking in loads of pain and couldn't stand then he should have sat in a wheel chair.

Also if not all kids can stand on chairs then they should go on a diet :)

agree about going in circles, but your attitude is a selfish one.
maybe jonnys dad doesn't own a wheelchair.should he have bought one especially?

also a child may not want to stand on a seat for a variety of reasons.a big crowd can be very intimidating for a kid.the child could be small 3-4 years old.
plenty of reasons why.

why would you take a 3 or 4 year old all the way to Fulham for a football match. far to young if you ask me. But if you did they can sit on your shoulders.

and as for a wheel chair they can be found at any local day care centre etc if he needed one especially. or i'm sure the stewards would have moved them to the side where some other town fans were if he explained the situation to them.

One small lad infront of us got his leg stuck in the back of the chair when he had to stand on it (he was only 2 or 3) because there were about 3 people to 1 seat and loads of people stood in the aisle for the whole game and a steward never said anything.

so jonnys dad should have found the local mobility centre, and small kids shouldn't go to games or sit on shoulder so the person behind cannot see.
thanks for clearing that up.NOT!

I kind of wonder what Magic's reaction would be if his view was impaired by a kid sitting on his dad's shoulders directly in front of him - get a wheelchair form the mobility centre perhaps ?

if he can't walk/stand then yes he should or be moved to the seating on the side. If that was my dad then it's exactly what i would have done. What's the big deal about that?

as for not sitting on shoulders where did i say that?
taking a 2, 3 or 4 year old to a big away day like that in my opinion is a bit stupid but each to there own.

What I think people are trying to say is that if blokey had asked to move to a side stand or maybe to the front where he can see better then there is no need for these arguments. People should know what to expect when there's a fixture like this and prepare to move about. I offered a guy my seat as his lad was standing on the stairs bit. I managed to find another seat the row down though.

Theres the "noobs" input  :D

I saw that. I was right in front of that kid.

At the end of the day yes it does impact some people but a lot of people like it and it would have saddened a lot of people a little bit if they'd been forced to sit.

It's a bit like saying should we ban fireworks because every year you know a few people will get hurt (not sure if that's a great analogy, but you can see where I'm coming from a bit?)

Enjoyed the day!

We played well without ever looking like we were going to score.

Macklins pen shout was the best chance we had.

Fulham didnt play at full pace and did a professional job.....I like Roy Hodgers and i hope they do well in the cup.

Running out of Hot food before half time was a disgrace....

Got a bit pissed in the 8 Bells - Whistle and Flute - Bricklayers Arms and The Station afterwards....

Got on the now infamous 8pm from Paddington and was kicked off at Reading due to a 'Police Incident' in the Buffet Carriage..

Got in about 11-30...what a day!!

Roll on Gills....i cannot be arsed to go to Dongs and put money in their pockets...

It's also "a bit off" that people come in 10 minutes late then spend the rest of the game taking photos, waving their camera in front of you so you can't see the pitch properly. I did have a bit of verbal, but soon realised the bloke was deaf when he turned to his mate and signed something to him. Felt a bit of a prat after that.

Fred carried on slagging him off for the rest of the game though :D

Its up to the FA/FLlaw makers to do something about it. To allow clubs to offer fans a choice.

They wont listen to fans who like to stand. But they might listen to the fans who like to sit....

It was fucking brilliant seeing the whole end stand up. It looked like a Man United/Liverpool following. Great support.

It was great to stand and the stewards be ok about it. The boys loved standing on their chairs (don't know they are born, when I were a lad your view was blocked until you grew up enough to see over peoples shoulders).

Because he's from Swindon but he went to watch Southampton for 8 seasons after they got St Marys (30k+ loads of seats) because he thought he was on the premier league gravy train. Saints slip down to the third tier and he and his dad realises they can watch 3rd tier football at Swindon for a fraction of the price, so they are up the County ground. And they expect Swindon fans to change their ways for them? When in Rome......

Either you've misread one of my posts or you've just made all of that up.

We've been regulars at the Country Ground since the early 1980's. We've also been going to Southampton since then as well but only for 3 or so games a season and we've always gone to a more Swindon games each season (and had season tickets for a good few of them).
