Title: Sports Personality of the Year
Post by: Nemo on Sunday, December 13, 2009, 20:05:47
Anyone watching this?

It must be said, that Jessica Ennis has a truly magnificent backside. Apart from that, everyone seems very smug, as usual.

Obviously not the right choice - Giggs does merit an appreciation of what he has achieved, but over the last twenty years, not the last twelve months.  For my money, the winner should have been Cavendish or Button.

Did Fabio Capello really win coach of the year?  I really can't believe that.  Sure we qualified for the World cup finals but why is that such an achievement?

Last week I watched my friends AC Milan DVD which had Capello crying like a baby when Franco Baresi retired.

Although he obviously didn't acheive all that in the last 12 months.

Button, Haye or Ennis for me; Giggs is being honoured in the wrong way. I also thing the team award should have gone to anyone but the mens cricket team, and the 15 year old girl who won the 100m and 200m in the junior championships (never done before) is far more impressive than the kid who does a few sommersaults in to water.

But it was THIS season! How many world champions were in that list of 10? Haye, Button, Ennis, Odowu, Daley, Tweddle… and yet the footballer wins. What a load of bollocks.

All the people in the junior category had done remarkably well, but Daley was the only one who had to beat grown ups to win his title. I think he probably deserves credit for that.

The whole show was a crock though. The worst ever.

Giggs received 29.4% of the vote (151,842 votes) ahead of Button (18.74% - 96,770) and Ennis (15.58% - 80,469) with a total of 516,473 votes cast.

Hardly any people in sport have a personality. Well I haven't noticed much. Possibly Ian Botham and Chris Eubank but most of them are boring dedicated super fit bastards.

This year Ryan Giggs must have started twenty football matches, in some of them he played quite well.

He no doubt deserves recognition for hie whole career, but to pretend that his sporting achievements over the past 12 months (or his personality) merit this award is taking this piss.

Au contraire, it used to be a good review of the sporting year, when the BBC had some sports to show....but it's not been worth viewing for years now.

Title: Re: Sports Personality of the Year
Post by: alanmayes on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, 18:32:12
It used to be a proper Sports Review of the Year programme, now as in sundays programme,
the emphasis is very much on the cult of Personality.Right the way through sunday evening
we were bombarded with the top 10 candidates,at every opportunity.

There used to be a spot of humour, with various sporting outakes and an invitation to some
sportsmen and women to make themselves look a bit silly.
eg Frank Bruno and others trying to play an interactive game of golf etc etc.

The BBC claim that by holding the event at the NEC or the Sheffield Arena that it's taken the
event to the people. Not so,the vast majority of tickets are by invitation only, with a huge proportion
going to the corporate sector.Remember this years Orange BAFTA's,with the sponsors name constantly
rammed down our throats at every opportunity?

Come on BBC,you've done it very well in the past and you can do it again.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but I heard that Giggs winning was down to a betting syndicate?

Giggs was 100/1 during the day on Sunday, by the time the lines had closed, enough money had been bet on him that he was then the 3/1 favourite, and he was odds on by the time he was announced.

Someone was betting heavily and phoning like crazy to get their man! Seems easy enough to do...

I've never really understood the point of the award in the first place.  Is it someone who is good at sport, or is it someone who is a bit of a cad while also being involved in sport?  And why would any of them care about it anyway when they spend their sporting career seeking a goal in that sport, not competing in other ones.  Maybe they could bring back that old BBC programme where they had people competing across multiple sports and just give it to that winner, with a single round for making people laugh or sometihng?

Some will argue the validity of certain "sports" like Snooker and F1 but many enjoy all sports, across all medium.

Hollie Doyle has probably done more this year than Fury, Broad or Henderson have but won't get anywhere near - in part due to her being a woman (not my opinion as to why this is the case) and her sport is argued by many that similar to F1, the vehicle (in this case the horse) is the main successor. In both there are much bigger teams behind the individual, even though both are considered as a solo event. Another nod is Horse Racing is one of the few sports at elite level which treats it's riders as equal in terms of gender - so in a male dominated environment (despite the surge of elite female jockeys in recent years) Doyle has probably had to work even harder too just to get certain rides. Extraordinarily brilliant season.
Verdict: Possible 3rd (but also deserved of 2nd)

Ronnie O'Sullivan is a bit of a cock but he is incredibly talented in his field. If the likes of boring bastards, *Andy Murray and Steve Davis can win SPOTY then there is no reason why he can't, considering his services to Snooker. Ambidextrous, arrogant, entertaining and continually record breaking; he's not bigger than the game but Snooker without O'Sullivan would be a very dour place.
Verdict: Runner-Up (any other year and he may have won it)

Lewis Hamilton of course has won before and I think been runner up a few times. Some might say, sharing the wealth would mean him not winning it again but I don't think his achievements can really be disputed. Finally doing the unthinkable and beating the greatest in Michael Schumacher (another loved and loathed) in nearly every record. If he hasn't yet, he certainly will and an 8th title looks imminent (a year from now) which will truly stand him alone as the greatest ever.

We can argue the era of motorsport and there are valid fors and against in matching him against Juan Fangio. Would a modern driver be able to drive well such an unsafe and difficult to handle car but the same could be reversed to Fangio, could he have handled the speed, Gs, power and all the technical instruments of a modern car? For their individual  era, Fangio certainly was the greatest. In this era Hamilton certainly is the greatest. I put him ahead of Schumacher - which I know is cardinal sin but it is time to accept that the unsurpassable has finally been surpassed. For it to be done by a British man, and in such a year full of uncertainty, this probably is worthy of being celebrated.
Verdict: Winner

*I was surprised to find that Andy Murray has won it three times?! Did he happen to win it when no one else did anything? I don't dispute what a great Tennis player he was and he probably deserved it one of the years but three seems a little extreme.
