Title: urgent Excel help if you will please...
Post by: jimbob on Monday, December 7, 2009, 20:06:14
think Ive had a mare

spent best part of 5 hours updating a spreadsheet on sat and went to go back into it today but it dont appear to have saved the changes.

I went into an old email I sent thru hotmail to find the said document, and opened it, done what I needed to adding new tabs etc...and continually clicking save as wanted to be certain that I had saved it (feeling all smug as i went, happy to be getting the chore over with)....

tried going in thru recent docs and into the old email but cant find the saved copy anywhere....

please help  :(

So you are saying it's not in the recent document list under Excels File menu then?

Two things I can think of:

1. Look under the tools/options menu in excel to see where the default file path is (shown in the "general" tab in excel 2003). Check the files in that location.
2. Search for all files (or *.xls files) modified on/after a date (i.e. Saturday).

If you opened it from an email it may be in a temp directory somewhere???

I reckon it's this.

Open up the attachment from the email again, go to file, save as and it should take you to the temp folder where it's saved.

But don't actually save it over the top of your edited copy!

Yeah, sounds like you've been working from the attachment without saving it locally, so should be in your temp files as Ginginho said.

If the original document was in an email it may be saved within the OLK folder.

Have a gander in:

"C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft".

If the file is stored on a network drive then it will be temporarily created there.

It will look something like:

~dfxxxx.tmp

Or if you had autosave on have a gander in here:

C:\ Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

It will be an .tmp file although Autosave isn't always on by default in Excel

Very long shot but try a search of the old hard drive using *.xls and *.TMP and see if it crops up in the search.  Sort by date to filter out the older stuff.

right, i searched under files modified on 5/12/09 and there are loads ranging from 1 KB to 32,326 KB(guessing thats because I was continually hitting 'save'??)

under 'types' some are DAT files, some are PBV, some are KDC, there is one TMP file thats 32,326KB....and the list goes on...its not really clear to me which one I need to try and retrieve....

when I tried opening the largest one, it then asked me what program I needed to retrieve to open it and when I used the excel application, it opened excel but didn't revert to my spreadsheet....

any suggestions welcome....other than from u STFC dave :D

If there is a word or two that might be in the Excel file in not anything else, perhaps a search in "Word or Phrase in the File" in the Search menu with the dog.  Under "More Advanced Options" tick the boxes "Search System Folders", "Search Hidden Folders" and "Search Subfolders".

Have you had a look in your recycle bin (I am trying to think of a Tiger Woods joke at the mo).

Just did what you did from hotmail to test it. You should find a shortcut to the document here:

C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent

Didn't show in recent documents menu.

Download google desktop and search your computer for it by searching using phrases you know are in the document.

If you're using searches, you need to include hidden files and folders. I reckon it'll be in the folder location I posted with any luck though.

try here...

C:\Documents and Settings\#your login here#\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKBD

replace #your login here# with the account name you use to login - if you saved it from email it should be there

Surely all his temporary internet files will get wiped regularly to hide the trail of granny fisting.

To view files in the the OLK folder:

open a email with an excel attachment, open the attachment then go to file and click on save as, that will open the OLK folder.

To do it as Triseros says you may need to view the hidden files and folders to open the the Local Setting folder. To do this righ click start, click on explorer, click on Tools, click on folder options and then highlight the view hidden files and folders button, then apply.

This also happened to me today, on an excel file that I was working on directly from a hotmail attachment. Many man hours wasted and Mucho Pissedoffo.

Well you live and let learn and I shall remember to save to desktop before working on it next time but why the fuck can those cnuts at microsoft not give a warning, or an option to recover.

Grrrrrr.

But more of a Prrrrrrrr actually, cos we won... AGAIN!

Did you look in the folder location I specified? Because every time I've tried it, it's worked for some reason.

Like Triseros says try:

C:\Documents and Settings\#your login here#\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKBD (or whatever the temporary folder is called.)

You find that out by opening the file from the mail and hitting save as - maybe make a note of the folder.  You can try navigating to it through explorer but I always find that I have to type the last folder extension.

fB has a point though, these temp internet files do get routinely wiped so I wouldn't hang about.
