You can't start the matchday thread unless you're not going to sleep before the game. It's TEF law. Hope you're going to enjoy your all nighter.

Another thread? Which ones officially official?

The one the Mex starts. The rest will be locked as we all know KoT is the official match day thread starter.

I'm now concerned that because someone else has started it, the gods of fate will not look upon us so kindly.

I started quite a few matchday threads last season, with varying degrees of success.

However, after starting the thread for the first game of the season, I have decided to retire and feel that Mex should start all MDT's from no on.

The only stipulation should be that it is started on matchday!

:notworthy: Good work Ben. As Arriba said in the other one, it was getting pretty tedious the numerous matchday threads that were on the go.

The Sarfend red card (second yellow) was apparently for diving.  You would want to try and take a dive when you are already on a yellow?

Sounds like it was for dissent, just as stupid.

Southend are aggrieved at not gettng a free kick on the right flank and Christophe, booked for a challenge minutes earlier, is shown a second yellow for his protests.

Discussion was all about the second half.
Sloppy goal, could have been a penalty shout against us.  Worried about dropping in tempo after half time, got scrappy.  Didn't use the ball well, O'Brien done his hamstring.

Toppi got his goal by persistence, good strikers get scrappy goals.

New signings did o.k., got better once they got used to the pace, Sarfend experienced in defence.

Marshall and Easton couldn't even make the bench, now have more quality.  O'Brien out for how long?, don't know.

Early days, but three points very important for us today.  Sarfend have done very well over the last few seasons.

Nice to have a week off before next Saturday.

Three days to go, no change on the transfer front, another signing a possibility.

Happy with that. Was always going to be difficult to produce another maestro performance after two fine Tuesdays on the run, so although we made hard work of it, we held on and took the points to enter official nose bleed territory in the table.

Once they get their fitness, the Celtic lads will be class for us within a few weeks. O'Brien looked more effective once he was injured as he all he could do was stand in the middle and actually played a couple of nice balls through from there as opposed to running up the wing and losing possession. Next time he comes on Wilson should kick him in the ankle as he runs on the pitch.

I thought we bossed the game right down to when the 2nd goal went in. By all accounts we should have had a goal or 2 before that. As soon as the 2nd went in we sat back and invited them onto us. shame we didn't kill the game off earlier in the half but we must be tired after so many games and after going the distance against Wolves so top marks to the boys. If we're going to do anything this season we need to win games likes this where we can just grind out a win. We weren't at our best but until those final few minutes Southend never really looked like scoring. I do feel we've got something good in the making here.

Was really impressed with the way we defended bar the goal. Cuthbert looks good and Greer was great as usual. Simon Ferry for me though was MOTM. What a great little player he could be. Not afraid to tackle and plays simple but effective passes. I'd be telling him to get forward more if I was Wilson because he could be very dangerous.

Exactly. It's grinding out results like that when you're not playing well that gets you places. As opposed to snatching draws where we should have had wins, or losing to unlucky goals like we did last season. Onwards and upwards

Good win for Town.  Not a vintage performance by any stretch but we always looked comfortable and probably just deserved the win based on chances and territory.

In the 3 ghome games ive been to, we seem to do well in the first half and then  our performance levels dip in the second half.  However considering we've played 2 games a week since the start of the season, im guessing this has something to do with it.

Looking at our next 5 games i cant see why we cant get at least 10 points,  so hopefully this will maintain the playoff push

You clearly didn't go last season then? We were bloody awful but now we have improved so much. For a start we can actually defend. We're starting to look like one of those league one sides that is tight at the back and wins games by a single goal. A lot of teams have done well in this league playing the way we have been playing so far this season. But if you're going to be like that after a win then you may as well not bother coming back. It's fans like this that really annoy me. They just moan all the time about everything.

I thuoght it was a good win. We played some good stuff in the 1st half. From memory, they had 2 shots, 2 headers they put wide they should have put in the net and a penalty appeal turned down -if the bloke had been less theatrical maybe he would have got it.
Cuthbert looks class and some of Greer's passing was brilliant. Ferry looked like he is well capable of unlocking defences a la Ling.
I thuoght we looked really good until we tired and then we were hanging on for dear life. The point is thuogh that we did hang on.
I'm one of those with rose tinted glasses. I'm liking what I see. The players are playing with intelligence and when it doesn't come off you can see what they're trying to do.
This is still very much work in progress but I'm optimistic of a reasonable season. We're not going to go up - we're not going to reach the play offs but there is not a cat in hells chance we're gonig down.

Ferry was MOTM. Great passing and nice movement. Got stuck in too. Great to see. When he get's a bit more match fit he's going to be a good player for us I think. As for Hutch he was alright but didn't really get a lot of the ball. Looks to have a bit of pace (although he's not lighting) and power about him. Think he needs to play a few more games to get match fit and then I feel he could be a decent enough player for us.

Wilson is doing a rebuilding job, but we are picking up points that we wouldn't have done last season.

We have a solid defence and midfield, but obviously haven't replaced Coxy.  So rather than panic and give atwo year contract to a donkey, the management are being patient.

As for strikers not looking great, if they could suddenly become lethal after weeks of reserve team football, they wouldn't be stuck in the reserves in the first place and would not be out on loan.

Their number 20 was constantly pulling on Greer's shirt during freekicks.

Jesus, you'd have thought we'd lost listening to you Arriba. Ok parts of the performance wernt champagne but fuck me we got there in the end and got the 3pts, which at the end of the day is the maximum you can get from a game whether you play well or play shit.

I cringe everytime we played it along the back four today - on the pure basis of having seen Town defenders from the past we notorious cant play football back there, what a breath of fresh air it is to see Cuthbert and Greer there who can play and defend WELL. IMO we look pretty solid back there.

Also i love the fact we have JP Ferry Douglas and Timlin (when he came on) who are more than confident with the ball at their feet and can play a pass. We look strong in midfield and these boys i feel are the key to the season for us.

Up top, hmm hard to say. Im a big fan of BP just thought today nothing was going for him, still a decent shift from him. Tope looks average and was assisted well by Mildy for his goal. Hutchinson looked like he was trying too hard to show he's come from a big club with flicks and tricks and also looked a yard off the pace, but this could be down to a lack of games. One more bod up top please Danny.

Overall...onward and upwards to Yeovil

The ref was one who wouldn't give free kicks just because a player falls down. In fact a Saarfend player was lucky not to get sent off early on, as he fell down and and fell on the ball, and handled it because he thought he was getting a fee kick. Instead he gave the free kick to us for handball, which the player threw down the ball, so he should've booked the player for deliberate handball, and then showed him a second yellow for dissent.

The Saafend player deserved to go for the biggest dive of the season. He went down like he'd been hit by a sniper, with him clutching his ankle, yet as soon as the ball came back close to him, he was up like lightning

Regarding the penalty incident, the player looked like he took a dive, but after the diving antics in the first half, he was not going to give it anyway.

Got to say they were the biggest moaners, having a moan about anything any everything.

To the game, we bossed the first half, and could've been a couple up.

Second half, Saarfend put 10 men behind the ball to make it difficult for us, and look for set pieces. Mildy threw the second in (close your legs Mildy!!), and when they got one back soon after, it was backs to the wall, even though they didn't look like scoring a second.

MoM - Ferry, with Greer and Cuthbert not far behind.

Title: Re: Swindon Town V Southend United Official Matchday Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, August 29, 2009, 17:33:26
Southend didn't impress me all that much to be honest - we controlled the game for most of the first half and the start of the second. They only began to get into it towards the end of the second when we got sloppy. There were times when players didn't look interested, weren't looking to get into space and weren't giving options. Some will say that's a result of Tuesday night but I thought it was very frustrating and could have cost us two points.

Having said all that, for the most part we played pretty well. Ferry showed a lot of promise once he got into the game, and we passed the ball around very well at times. As for the red card, the ref wasn't going to book him until the player made it obvious he was cheating - by letting go of his injured leg, jumping up, and challenging for a header. How Southend thought they had a right to complain I do not know.

dire match.we were rubbish and wont win many playing like that.luckily we had 12 men as the ref was our best player.2 stone wall pens for them first half before we scored.passing was piss poor all over the park.
ferry was alright but the lad upfront was terrible.
same shit as last season really

Ridiculous post, it wasn't a classic match, but it was far from "dire". Our passing was really good in different parts of the game, and we still looked solid at the back apart from the occasional back passes. And the difference between now and last season is huge in my opinion - I personally get far less worried of a stupid fuckup whenever we are passing the ball around in defence, and we look like a genuine threat on the wings and up front.

I've seen ALOT worse matches. It was far from dire.

Some good movement and solid defending.

Only thing that was dire was the atmosphere.

I see we've earned 3 points and therefore I'm happy. The manager will note the flaws... Last season if we played poorly we lost, so that's progress for me :)

I thought it was a pretty bad game, in fact I'd rather be arse raped by a horse than watch that game again.

Whilst Ferry was my MOTM, Hutchinson was useless. I haven't been too impressed by Obadeyi either, I'd be pretty pissed off if I was Macklin who has played well when given a chance but then been replaced by loan signings that aren't any better than him. Why help develop other clubs players over our own?

Other than a couple of blips the defence looked really solid, just a pity they conceded a sloppy goal again. Amankwaah was the best of them for me, he seems to be getting better and better.

Southend were pretty awful though (worse than us) and the worst of the teams I've seen at home. If they keep playing like that they'll be in relegation trouble come the end of the season.

My twopenneth:

The game was OK for large parts and we controlled it well up to their goal, as we should against 10 men. The substitutions didn't really help as we seemed to be a bit at sixes and sevens after it became 2-1. It's easy to lose site of the performance in the whole match when the last 15 mins were garbage.

The dive was comical. You could see daylight between him and the defender. And the 'resurrection' probably made the refs mind up.

My only moan is we have to be more careful, we could easily have got clawed back from 2-0. And I did think they had a fair shout of a penalty (the first claim). But a win is a win.

Very impressed by Ferry (Ferry impressed), especially given this was his first game for us. 'Hutch' seemed a little of the pace to me, but you can't condemn the man just yet! Lets see where he is after a few games.

All in all a good 3 points.

i'm not grumpy,i just thought it was a poor game.how that means i clearly didn't go last year or shouldn't go i dont know?
if i thought it was a good game and we played well i would have said so.i guess i better go into more detail to explain.

i thought the passing was generally poor.yes there was the odd decent move but overall it wasn't great.ferry took 20 mins to get into the game and got robbed of the ball a couple of times.to his credit he grew as the game went on and was deffo mom.his fellow celtic team mate i thought was out of his depth.hope he can improve.
we didn't create alot until it was more or less over, and i am 100% convinced they had solid pen claims. jean francios pulled back one of theirs blatantly, and a few mins later cuthbert elbowed their forward.southend fans should rightly be pissed off with the ref.

yes i'm glad we won but it was far from convincing.

We controlled the game for 75 minutes, keeping the ball and looking comfortable defensively  against a side that is expected to be there or thereabouts, how is that anything like last season? Fair enough we didn't kick on when we should have, but when Ferry and Hutchinson are both match fit we wouldn't have had to change the side and momentum would have been maintained.

All this shit about the ref is bollocks. He was good, that was all. He wasn't bias in any way, the bloke deserved a booking and from where I was sat it wasn't a penalty, the forward just needs to hit the weights.

My only concern is JFL. Either he wasn't fit or just isn't good enough. His distribution is horrendous and he doesn't inspire confidence like the rest of the back four.

axs comes wandering into the pub asking for advice on what to do if you lock yourself in your car. Cue mass exodus from pub as everybody goes to have look and a laugh.

She couldn't open the doors or windows and if she tried starting the engine the alarm would go off. Panic set in and she was preparing to ring the RAC when Fred pipes up and says "Have you tried pressing the button on the key?". Car unlocks. We laugh, a lot.

I don't think JFL was fully fit but I can see why DW sticks with him. He's still learning and he's crap and excellent in equal measure. He's very raw but I think there is a bloody good player in there. I don't think he was running freely today, his tracking back was very slow. In the second half he did a clever lob pass to Macca and had a decent run and shot. He also blocked a couple of good ones.
Like the team, he's still work in progress but I'd stick with him for now.

I know i won't live this one down. I was even more worried because my RAC documents haven't come in the post yet!

I thought it was a good first half, we looked comfortable on the ball and were good value for the lead.

We look tired in the second half and faded quite badly, Ferry looked a quality aquisition. Hutchinson looks like he could be good player, his distribution was good in the first half. I think he tried to showboat a bit too much, constantly looking for clever 180/360 turns everytime he got the ball. Give him time he could be a real threat.

It certainly wasnt a classic, but it was 3 points and we looked pretty solid still. The loud mouth geezer who sits behind me branded our performance as 'disgraceful' and 'diabolical' - a tad harsh, we won FFS! He will obviously explode with rage when we get beat 3 nil.

Personally I came away happy and full of hope for the coming weeks, yes we didnt play like champions, we played like a team who battled hard against a strong wind, a very physical team and their own fitness due to the 120mins we played against a Premiership team midweek.

I'm Satisfied.

Has anyone ever seen Arriba and DV in the same room?

You need to realise that you support a team in League 1 so therefore you will witness lots of poor games, if you want to watch brilliant football every week then pay through the nose to watch a plastic premiership team.

You sound like my dad Arriba, and he is 67.  The game wasn't the best but the first half we looked totally in control without scoring the goals that our control warranted.  2nd half we looked tired without really looking like being in trouble.

After watching the last few years of lge1\lge2 football I will take that!

You come across as one of those people who even if we were in the top 4 of the Prem you would find something to moan about!  I would find another passtime if I were you.  Maybe go back to walking your dogs!

Good game and one that we may have drawn under Malpas.

Funniest moment for me was in the 1st half where their foward stood right near Lucas for the kick, ala Cox/Paynter style and he stood on Lucas' right waiting for him to kick it and didn't realise that he was left footed.

I would have thuoght the majority of Swindon players will be absolutely knackered as they work one hell of a lot harder than they've done for a few years. I would also have thuoght the majority will be thinking 8th in the league - not bad and as its a fairly new team maybe things could get quite exciting.
Then I'd imagine they'll go out on the piss for a well earned beer and enjoy the finest women they can find and unlike a lot of last season, good luck to them. In my opinion they'll have earned it this week.

..the fucking fans sat behind me that is.  Moaned all game, even when we were passing it around with a bit of confidence start of the 2nd half.  Topped it off by lambasting O'Brien for not running when he was practically having to hop around.  Anyway, it allowed me to call that long haired Rik Wakeman lookalike a fucking imbecile.

Jesus wept.  It was by no means a classic, the last 30 mins was pretty rubbish but before that we played some good stuff and got ourselves into a comfortable position.  Ferry will be class after a couple of games and I think Huthinson will turn out well.  oh, and on the fans behind me, quite what shouting at Tope after he scored with "you may have scored but you're still fucking useless" was supposed to achieve I'll never know.

Arriba, if you'd worded it a little less like you'd just witnessed us take a hammering, then I think people would have taken less offence.  For a good 40 odd minutes we had complete and utter control of the game and passed reasonably well, it was far better then most games last year.

No slanging match here!  I just think "fans" can be far too critical and expect more than a league 1 squad is capable of at times, bearing in mind what has gone on in the last week.

We are playing far better football than we have for a good few years IMO, and the team is performing above average for a lge 1 side without a massive budget.  I think some people have far too high an expectation for a team at this level.

Nothing patronising about that!

On Hutchison, he was clearly not match fit or 1st team sharp but he had little flashes of some quite intelligent play. Personally, I thought he showed enough in the first half to show he'll come on to be a decent player for us once he is match fit. To just write him off as "useless" and "terrible" making no allowance for the fact he's only just joined the squad, isn't match fit and has been playing Scottish reserve team football lately seems to me excessively harsh and gives no sense of the context.

If he doesn't improve over coming weeks, I'll revisit that judgement. But for a first outing in a wholly new environment, he wasn't outstanding, but like I say showed enough IMO to give me confidence he'll come on well for us.

arriba, I think people would have been less inclined to view you as moaning if your first couple of comments on the match hadn't been completely negative on what was a decent first half performance and a good win. Sorry if that's patronising, but if even DV thinks you're moaning, you've got a problem :)

Arriba, I stated an opinion of what you should expect and what you should do based on your first couple of posts, I am unaware of telling you what you think as you had already done that yourself in your first couple of posts. I certainly don't think I was patronising, I was stating my opinion on your post as you have since done on mine, but I did so without suggesting that your opinion was bleating bollocks!

By saying that you watch a different game to everyone else because you regularly watch a level of football that has made you undertand the tactics of the game more (that might not be what you were trying to say but that is how it came across) is more patronising than anything I said as your post came across that you were watching different aspects of the game that us supporters do not understand, without knowing what level any of us has been involved in football in the past.  I do not need to spout this as I am involved with this forum because I am a fan not because I am knowledgable about football.

This is the TEF!  Am I mistaken that this forum is all about the sarcasm, that is what is so fun about this forum.  I have been told before that I come across as over sarcastic on the forum by people who have met me later on, but what is wrong with that?  Should I mind my P's and Q's with you because I believe you were being very over critical of the performance? In a word, No!

I did not have a pop, I challenged you on what you think and what you said, as you did to me!  This is a forum and this is allowed, unless you know something I don't!  If you take offence to people disagreeing with then a forum is the worse place to be surely!

Pauld, stop bloody sitting on the fence, grow some backbone man! ;D

BTW, this was meant as a joke before anyone kicks off at me again!

On a brighter note, we won!  :beers: Anyone would have thought we were playing Gillingham!

We all see things differently Leefer.  From my perspective I think we might just have had a bit of luck today, we've taken three points but on another day we could easily have dropped points.  I thought the first half we were easily the better team, and I thought Cuthbert looked quality.  If the Billy Paynter cross in the first minute of the second half had found a Swindon player I think we might have seen three or four goals but it wasn't to be.  The longer the game went on the more negative we became, our passing was awful at times and Southend came right back into it.  As for the stick that Duke used to get, let us not forget that this time last season Paynter was taking a lot of abuse both at games and on forums - there's not many putting in a better shift week in and week out now.

:beers: Anyone would have thought we were playing Gillingham!

grrrr.you've misquoted me again but i'm not going to argue anymore with you.i'm sure no one else wants to read anymore, so lets agree to disagree.

Leaving all the bitching aside from previous posts ....
I thought we were dire in the second half, end of ...I do like the why Wilson has us playing across the back it shows confidence on the ball, but also very easy for a side with men behind the ball to defend.
First half we looked very comfiortable, Southend I thought were a very poor side.
Second half we sat back just like last season and I expected an equaliser any minute, but thank God we held on.
Three points were the most important thing today, but entertainment value was down.
On the up side it was great to see Tans today.

In the top eight, great credit after the Gillingham result.

Thought we deserved the win in a game that I'm doubt that we'd have thrown away at least 2 points last season.

I don't think we worked hard enough against the 10 men although that was probably down to the effort they put in on Tuesday.

I'm happy with the start we've made to this season apart from the Gills game. Things are definitely on the up as far as I'm concerned but I'm not one that wears the rose-tinted glasses that alot of Town fans seem to.

I've never understood the amout of applause Town players get for missing chances from 6 yards out over the last couple of years. They're professional footballers and as far as I'm concerned should be doing better.

Perhaps I've just been watching them too long and expect too much and am not happy when I think they should be doing better. Let's face it, the players are in this league for a reason!

I've known Ern (Rick Wakeman) for over 25 years and he lives for the club, he sometimes probably cares a bit too much and it comes across as being a moaning git (which he sometimes is)

Nope that one isn't down to any of us. In fact we all like Billy for the effort he puts in. If they all worked that hard it'd be a different story.

Not sure about Tim though, he wasn't there today. He just likes to be controversial. Best thing to do with him is to ignore him, like all his mates do.

That's fair enough and is your opinion which everyones entitled to. I just think we could have worked the ball a bit more against 10 and that Macca was one of the worst culprits of not running at people and trying to put the ball in too early.

Can you honestly say that Tope did anything today apart from score? He may turn out to be a very good player, but when we signed him Bolton fans were saying he wasn't far off their first team. I haven't seen anything like that from him, but believe me I hope I do.

Basically its non stop slagging off the team - very loud. How they've never got a slap is beyond me.  People tolerate them but one day it will happen. There will be a game when emotions run high where someone will have a pop. I'm pretty immune to it. Macca seems to be a particular favourite for abuse. In the Soton game one of the group said rather loudly why the fuck are people giving Macca a standing ovation when he was substituted.
One day it will kick off. A few ST holders have moved.

Tope is not the answer, the goal he scored today was a total misshit, but somehow it made its way over the line, would be very surprised if his loan was extended.

Macca will never be a workmanlike player, he is an impact player, to pick on Macca imo is a bit unfair, Wilson like most managers are not adventurous when they are in front and the order of the day was to get bodies behind the ball, its not good entertainment but three points, I'm sure he was just following instructions from the bench.

Personally I thought Tope was poor today. I don't think he has the strength and his control and running with the ball are poor but he sure ain't going to get any better from your comments. Macca is a different matter. How the fuck anyone expects a 2ft high 3 stone toddler to defend is beyond me.

I think it could be the reality of league one being a culture shock, the only trouble his he will be off before he can settle in.

I may well pop across and say hello. Believe me, none of us go there to wind any other fans up. We're probably just guilty of being a bit too vocal some times with our opinions. I'll ask the guys to keep it down a bit. Certainly don't want anyone to move because of us as we're all there for the same reason.

Not sure it'll work on Tim though, but he'll be off to Australia soon so won't annoy anyone. Even I told him to shut the hell up at Oldham last week.

Wouldn't disagree with any of that re Tope. However, I think he suffers from chronic indecisiveness rather than laziness (I know you didn't say that but plenty around me were saying it today). I wonder if he's used to getting a bit more time on the ball in Prem reserve games where they all stand round admiring each other's showboating a bit more and now he's in the 3rd division, he's starting to realise he has to make a decision quick (pass/shoot/tackle) before some hairy-arsed centre half boots him into row Z and is finding he can't do it. Can't make the decision so he ends up just standing there, looking like a rabbit in headlights. Or maybe he's just a bit shit.

Of course it may be that he isn't that far off the Bolton first team and that was actually the Bolton fans having another go at Megson - as in "Christ, we could end up with him in the first team"

Ferry looks a cut above. He gave the ball away once or twice early on, but other than that its hard to fault him. He looks totally in control when on the ball, knows what pass to make, and where to make it, like he doesn't even need to think about it. I might be getting a bit carried away but I think he's class, and will go down alongside the likes of Carrick/Given/Milner/Davis as quality loan players at Swindon Town.

On the flip side, I still can't find any positives about Tope. Ol' One-ball should take full credit for that goal ;)

Oh and that was the other thing - anyone see Mildenhall check himself at the start of the first half when the TE were singing 'you've only got one ball'? I chuckled.

I think the County Ground has a curse on Mildy!

We were lucky yesterday, that was a worse performance than Franchise at home. We really tired in the second half, Douglas just couldnt get around the park quick enough. Glad the players have a week off now.

There are some miserable fookers about, but it has to be said, that Tope is rubbish! On the flip side, the Celtic lads were very good, and Cuthbert was excellent. Loved the way he celebrated his goal. Everyone in the pub after was saying how good it was to watch a player who really looked like he enjoyed scoring a goal!

Weve got the points, these are the lucky ones you get if you are going to get yourself up there. Without the sending off or Mildy's fuck up I think we would have lost. Onwards and upwards.

He does nothing but moan for the full 90 mins. In the last few minutes, he kept on moaning about O'Brien until I shouted up at him that O'Brien was injured...he soon shut up !!

Positives:
3 points
Celtic Lads
Strength in Depth (Easton and Marshall not making the bench)
Team not settled yet, will improve with time.
Defence vast improvement over last season.
Midfield now has creativity with Ferry.
JPM rejuvenated after being Malpassed.
Defender scoring, second home game in a row.

Negatives:
Conceded immediately after scoring, twice in two weeks.
Need another striker, Paynter will get injured/suspended, other strikers are all loan players.

The first half, ball retention and ground passing was excellent, proving they can do it, and the weaknesses can be worked upon. Second half is best forgotten except that we held on for three points.

I sit in the Arkells virtually on the 18 yard line, with he incident took pace in line with me, and it was a dive, with everyone around me saying the same, so Claridge better get some glasses.

How he got up was laughable, so hopefully Soccer AM will show the incident next week in the 'It's a miracle' section, where they take the piss of players who get up so quickly from being so injured.

what do these guys say that is out of order?

I missed the conversation with Redone, so here goes

They say practically nothing other than negative remarks normally directed at our own players during the game, loud enough for a good number of people to have to put up with it.  Don't get me wrong, there are games and moments that deserve a bit of a verbal lashing, but when we are winning and playing well is pushing it too far.  Rik Wakeman, or Ern, has been at it for years.  His little group were stood behind me against Hull away in 1995 (see how annoying they can be, I can still remember it) shouting out quite loudly that Given was rubbsh and would never make it as a keeper because he was too small -this was in the pre match warm up in our first game of the season.

Redone, I don't usually do my nut over such things, but on Saturday it wound me up no end.  I've already moved once this season and last season I moved against Millwall (which was dire, but when the game is dire I don't need to be told about it every bloody 30 seconds at the same time).  It's only because I know a few other people in the area that I renewed, I'm considering a change of seat now though.  If it's going to be like that while we are unbeaten at home I'm concerned for my own sanity.

Oh, I know people moan for no good reason and have put up with it many times, but this group make it into a profession.  I seriously have not experienced it before and have moved around the ground a fair bit in my years.  I've witnessed two guys kick off with each other before, but even that was more funny to witness than these guys.  It's more slanted towards abuse at individual players than the general for fucks sake type remarks when Ifil had just launched another clearance into the roof.  I honestly think they believe they are being funny and "insightfull".  Having a pop at a player who had yet to play for us (and as it turned out went on to become one of the best keepers in the Premiership) in the warm up of our first game of the season hardly smacks of intelligence - and before anyone says anything, it was the fact it was within earshot of the player that really stuck in my mind for this long.

Comments like "why are people applauding him" after we've just had a shot saved for example I could handle if said under your breath, but it's the constant need to let everyone else know.

Oh, and if Tope plays shit every week and scores, I'd sign him up.

You should get that guy closer to the front and just to the right of us up with you.  I think he must take speed or something, he's a little bit mental and it's great fun watching someone in one of the quieter bits trying to get everyone to stand up and sing.  In fact he reminds me of Fred at MkDonalds on new years day that time, with the Tia Maria.

It does make it nearly unwatchable. I used to sit next to 2 of the most bitter twats. They used to seem to want us to lose. They'd comment on the quality of the other team, and even be angry if we were winning, because "we didn't deserve to" or some bollocks. It disgusts me.

I'd rather watch the game with 100 people who enjoy football, than go with a few thousand who find it the most painful and life ruining chore of their miserable lives.

Ive had to go back to the Town End because of it.

To be fair though, I think it's always been there, at the same level. It's just that in previous years for every moaner you had 5 fans singing to drown it out. Now the South stand is silent, and all you hear is the negative stuff.

It's always easy to be negative. Makes the moaners feel better about themselves, they can say, look I was right when we fall on our faces.

They'll never stop, its up to the other fans to drown it out with positive stuff.

As I see it, we were only any good under McMahon because of his playing ability rather than his (complete lack of) managerial ability. It turned to shit when he could not play any more and could not directly influence things on the pitch and as you say, everyone could see him for the complete twat that he was. We always seemed to have at least 10 players out injured because no fucker wanted to play for him. 95-96 was a fantastic season but what a bell end he was.

On the subject of Fenwick, all I remember him for is breaking opponents legs, having a fight with Nijholt and allegedly slapping his missus. I certainly don't remember that other stuff ???

Exactly. Even after the sending off, it wasn't until they had yet another player booked shortly after that they calmed down and started trying to play football instead of whining, snarling and fouling.
