We've spent all pre-season working on formations and 'second strikers' then we go into the season using a formation we never used with a different right winger and second striker. It seemed JPM was being groomed for that role if you will either that or we'd go for 3 central midfielders and McNamee, O'Brien and Paynter as a front 3. So we do neither.

We play Cuthbert at right back after next to no pre-season and a pre-season complete with Amankwaah at right back. We play Amankwaah right wing after a pre-season at full back and we played McNamee up bloody front.

Sounds like the same old rubbish.

....and to top it all off we've just bought on Mark fucking Marshall.

They played some sound clips of our fans, if our fans realistically think we can finish top 6 then I think their deluded.

 Worst opening day result I can remember since 64/65, when we lost 6-1 at Bury in Div 2, then goalkeeper Norman Oakley broke his arm early on, think someone like Owen Dawson went in goal, and there were no subs.

 So there were extenuating circumstances...we ended up getting relegated.

 Wilson is already under pressure...he could very easily be gone by the end of August,  a bit like Bobby Smith...who went after losing the first 5.

I followed the game (well, second half) on the BBC and it seems it was a disaster. Were there any redeeming features at all?  The defence, on whom we all expected to rely, couldn't apparently cope with Gillingham's big forwards.  God help us all when they come up against a quality attack. Was there any creativity in midfield, could we get or retain the ball? I feel almost betrayed.  The expectation was high, maybe unrealistically so, but this is a real confidence breaker.
The one bright spot is that they will need to graft for the next game - or else.

just got back.....

well first half we werent too bad, created much more than gills, gills first goal was very well taken but lescinel was caught napping a bit. At half time I genuinely thought we could come out and win it 1-2 how fucking wrong I was, totally flat footed and useless. thoroughly depressing, the only time i can remember timlin touching the ball was when he passed it to there strikers to score. we looked totally off the pace, feel very sorry for billy paynter.

Our defence looked worse than last year, greer and morrison were slower than mat heywood and simple balls over the top caused us no end of trouble. we were fucking hopeless and worse than any performance last year.

Post match is on the OS now, hmm guess hes just as gobsmacked as the rest of us then

Well on that performance at least half our side is simply not good enough-Amankwaah,O'Brien,Marshall,Lescinel,Cuthbert and Timlin.We were humiliated by an average side who were sharper,stronger and it has to be said fitter than us.We looked as if we hadn't had a pre season at all,totally unprepared.Even players that were decent last season looked poor(ie Greer and Morrison)Only players who came out with any credit for me were Paynter,McNamee(despite the criticism from our fans,he's the only player capable of creating anything) and Macklin when he came on.If Craig Easton aint good enough to get in that side,he might as well leave.I reiterate my opinion that we dropped a bollock by releasin Jack Smith who is far superior to any of the three full backs on show today.Oh and Curtis Weston was the best midfield player on veiw.

Just in case you hadn't realised, we were Shit.

Only Players who came out with any credit at all were Paynter (who worked his bollocks off with no help), O'Brien, who looked good until he was injured at the end of the first half, and Douglas who did what good midfield players do, and move the ball around.

Lucas, made one fantastic save, but couldn't really be blamed for any of the goals (although I have to admit I didn't see the fifth, I was halfway back to the car by then).

As for Morrison, well if you think of all the bad games Ifil plays, roll them into one, and remove any pace, that was what he looked like. Distribution shocking, was outpaced time & time again by the Pikeys, and only looks comfortable heading a ball when his feet are firmly on terra firma. If anyone offers us a million for him, I would bite their hands off. In fact if we were offered a pack of smarties it would be a good deal on that performance.

In a 5-0 defeat 'invisible' and 'best player' are not necessarily exclusive.

TBF, when he moved back onto the wing after Macklin came on he did what McNamee does (SHow flashes of something special), but when he was playing up front alongside Paynter he just couldn't really get into the game.

It's the obvious problem with playing players out of position, they don't do things naturally and by the time they have thought about what they should do they have either lost the ball, or the opportunity has gone.

DV, our first half showing was very respectable, our second half was the worst we've played since the florest game

It sounded as though they started quite brightly in the second half, but fell apart when the second went in.

Curtis weston ran the show. Timlin looks slow and overweight.

We beat Tranmere quite convincingly on the opener last season and almost went down, so I'm kind of hoping the opposite will be true here. A 5-0 loss does knock the playoff talks out of people though.

I don't care if we play good football, i want our players to get stuck in. I want to see two footed challenges, 10 man brawls, the odd sending off for a slapping an opponent. At this point I won't adhere in writing this season off because 1) it's day one and 2) this time last year people were buzzing (with a fair amount of caution too) after a opening day win under Maurice Malpas.

Things change... Today wasn't good enough, in footballing terms it was a total disaster but I won't be be telling the currently smug "I told you we're crap" posters from thisis that they're right just yet...

Saying that I don't recall many people on here saying that we had a definate promotion chasing team... I read comments applauding the signings, and rightly so because they are decent players. We know what Gordon Greer can do for example... so we lose 5-0 and all of a sudden he's not good enough?

Defending isnt just about the defence. You defend as a team, I know for obvious reasons you dont get to many games but Cox & Paynter both used to chase everything and work their bollocks off. Put the defender under pressure make him make a pass, dont give him time.

Of course not all strikers do this but by having one upfront or what not you take away this opition. Paynter cant chase across the back line on his own


I'm not going overboard with the gloom but it has re-affirmed my stance that we are no better than we were last season.

There was a 40-page pull out from the Adver and both Andrew Fitton and Danny Wilson said their were aiming for the play offs. Which in my opinion was stupid, it makes a rod for Wilsons back and it means the aims are clear.

What if it comes to late January and we're 14th and miles away from the chasing pack? do we get rid of Wilson there and then for failing what is nigh on an impossible task?

Plus, the mere mention of the play offs gets are fans going. It did last season. Play Offs were never a realistic chance last season period. Some players mention it in an interview and our fans believe the bullshit.

Same thing this season. I dont know who they picked or where they were but today the played some sound bites of our fans talking about our chances next season. Champions was mentioned, 3rd was mentioned, play offs, in and around the play offs. I think one person mentioned mid table.

Already our fans expectation levels are through the roof and what happens when we get 3/4 months into the season and we arent meeting their stupid high expectations. The booing starts, the call for the managers head and bang we're exactly where we were last season.

OK, I've gone on now. The point is - todays result was a disgrace but isnt the end of the world and isnt an indication of how the whole season will go. However, I hope it does squash the play off talk - it probably will sadly for relegation talk!

We went out with a ridiculous formation and starting line-up given what's happened in pre-season. We should have played 4-4-2 with Macklin up front - it's not ideal but it's worked ok and would have done for the time being.

I think one of the biggest problems today was that we were playing 5 in mindfield (if you include McNamee) but ignored them, and played straight over the top. Goodness knows where the midfield was defensively though. The only time we looked dangerous was when we had a bit of pace on both wings, when Macca got wide. For the rest of the match we were constantly giving the ball away and had no idea.

There are few words that can describe today, I just want to ignore the game completely. I don't think I've ever shouted abuse at the team as they've left the pitch before, but today they deserved everything they got. Only Lucas, Macca, Paynter and Macklin came close to earning their place for Tuesday. I'm disappointed to see that there's been no apology from the club to the hundreds who got up early and travelled, as that has to be one of the worst performances I have ever seen from a Swindon side.

I'm not really going to be negative or comment on todays game but I think it's a big couple of weeks for Fitton. As a businessman he is obviously very astute but when it comes to football he's a bit naive and showing his inexperience, at this moment in time his investment and youth philosophy is a million miles away from working. I appreciate this is a kind of unfashionable thing to say but after the Malpas, Wilson appointment sagas etc he really does need to start getting the football side of things right.

Onto the team we are at least lacking a left back, attacking midfielder and a couple of strikers which are obvious and we all know this. The most worrying thing though is that without at least a couple of these we are almost definately relegation fodder with pretty much no goals in the team at present.

I can definitely see us improving but I think Ifil needs to come back into the team, we need his pace. Sod the mistakes he makes Morrison and Greer together is the same as Viveash and Reeves and resulted in the same kind of outcome. It's going to be a big August for Fitton, Wilson and STFC as a whole.

If Ifil has to be in for his pace then its got to be a back 3 and wing backs.

I just think Fitton is lost between strategies at the moment and doesn't really know how too achieve his goals. Football is a unique business and many successful businessmen have done more damage than good to clubs. I'm inclined to think we need a bit more football experience in the boardroom, I know Watkins has a bit of experience but it's very much in the club PR area.

The striker situation is a classic example, we seem to have ideas above our station which in principle is good and shows we have 'high' standards. However if these targets are completely unrealistic you have to lower them somewhat. I just think that a lot of what Fitton wants is unrealistic at this point in time, the club needs a period of success before you can even think about looking at balancing the books or breaking even.

As others have said, I think today showed we need Ifil in the team. Yes he can be a real problem at times, but the number of shitty balls chucked over Morrison and Greer today was a joke. Once that bal was chucked over, they moved slower than continental drift and Jackson was taking wank touches and still not getting closed down. Their man marking was just appauling. Pace and man marking are Ifil's strengths, so bring back the beast i say.

The other point though is that they weren't helped by our midfield, so i'm probably being unfair.

He has been around the block and seems to lack the hunger/desire .... he talks a good game but that is basically it ... whereas Holloway is passionate wherever he goes .. he totally becomes at one with that team .. you dont feel that from Wilson

I dread to think what its like on the Norwich City forums, judging by the way everybody is going off on one here.

Wilson does seem to have made some strange team selections, ie Cuthbert playing and McNamee up front. But then he's done that before and it worked out, everyone was calling him a cunt for playing Kanyuka in midfield and the next day he was a genius for spotting the hidden talent.

One bad game doesn't make a player shit either. Lescinel has played well at left back towards the end of last season and during pre season. Most people didn't have a problem with him playing there before kick off but now he's shit. Same with Morrison, pretty much everyone would have picked him alongside Greer but now he's also shit.

I wasn't at the game but based on what people have said that were there and the stats, it looks like we played well for 20 minutes or so and then it all turned to shit. Which became even deeper shit when Wilson made a couple of changes after going 2-0 down in an attempt to turn it round.

I reckon it all comes down to the striker shortage though. Everyone (the players included) knew having one striker was bad news and that McNamee can't play up front to save his life, and that it could turn to shit. And it did. Get a decent striker in and I can see it all coming together.

Besides, look on the bright side - you could be a Norwich City supporter.

Emotions are high after a big defeat against a team who will probably be lucky to be mid table. I didn't go today but sympathse with those who did.

The first game of the season always throws up some weird, freakish results (Look at us last season) and I hope that's all this was, but there should be some serious soul searching by the players and management over the next few days.

What was Macklin and Marshall's contributions like? They came on at 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

I know it's not their fault but when I saw that they were the 2 out of our 7 subs used I was quite surprised as they were probably our weakest players on paper.

Marshall is just plain shit,and will not get a proffesional contract once his current one expires. Macklin Showed some good touches at times, and at others looked like a little lost lamb. He's only 17 though, he has an excuse. Marshall is just nowhere near good enough.

I did have doubts as to whether Lescinel was good enough. All I will say is that I had exactly the same doubts with Commingues, and he ended up being our best player by the end of that season.

Greer was also run ragged by their small forward.

Throughout the team the motivation and fitness wasnt good enough. We came out and said, ooh, its a bit hot, we'll take it easy for the first 20 minutes to pace ourselves and see how it goes. They came out wanting to win every ball from the first minute. They just dominated us right from kick off and their whole team grew in confidence.

Think some of the criticism of Wilson is harsh. He called the game exactly right in the interview.

Also think McNamee needs to go. He's got no presence on the pitch at all. He had a couple of shots that were very weak, he looks like a schoolboy at times. Macklin is the way to go right wing, and obviously we need 2 strikers ASAP.

Billy Paynter went close twice, one was a good cross from O'Brien. That was it.

Pikey fans on other forums have had good things to say about McNamee.

What about when Macca skinned two defenders with one touch and planted it right on Paynter's head in the first half? Or when he won several corners and throw-ins whilst being double marked, and isolated by the rest of the team? Or when he picked out Morrison and Greer perfectly from corners? Yes his shooting was poor, and he didn't tear them to shreds, but he was one of the few who looked like creating anything yesterday.

I completely echo Fred's sentiment about the complete lack of passion shown by the players and manager. Gutless.

It just looked like the same old shit as last season, just without Cox. He was the one that held the team together last season as everybody played around him.

An extra striker who can hold up the ball would be nice, the amount of times that the ball was pumped aimlessly long was just stupid. We were playing 5 in midfield FFS but just didn't make use of it.

Come on, you're being a bit unfair. Yes the team were crap yesterday, but McNamee was very good. It's just a shame the rest (apart from Paynter) were still on holiday.

The most entertaining part of the day yesterday was spotting random Plymouth fans and shouting "Janner!" followed by "Green army!". They seemed to see the funny side of it.

If you are going to play the royal crap game of the season, the first game of the season away from home is the best time to do it.  You should have learned a lot about your team, and have time to put things right.  I don't understand the team selection or then the substitutions, which is very easy to say with 20/20 hindsight.  It is almost as if Wilson wanted to look at his new signings first and foremost, and with the attacking options limited right from the start, there was no way back with two goals down, so let's take a look at Macklin and Marshall.  Thee were better choices on the bench in terms of steadying the game and nicking something from a couple of set-pieces.      

Stating the bleeding obvious, if you are short of strikers, a flat four midfield was probably the way to go, as the ball is going to be right back at you, you can't expect 50% of the possession with no one to hold it up.  So you are going to be under pressure for much of the match.  So 4.4.1.1 was probably the best option, especially as Macca has the had the free role under different managers, because he can't defend.  

What are the choices for the next game (injuries?).  

Kennedy in for Lescinel?
Ifil in for Morrison?
Amankwaah in for Cuthbert?
McGovern in for O'Brien (injured?)?

Looks like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.  We are not going to win any games without another striker.  If wingbacks were used, that might mean less hoofball to Macca and Paynter.  

I'm with you crozzer. I'm wondering if he is still looking at what his players can do before we get a finalised squad, although of course I doubt that he expected it to fail quite so dramatically.

Sure this should have been settled by now but the crux of it is that it just isn't.

On checking, his substitution by Marshall was tactical so he shouldn't be injured, read a report somewhere where it said that O'Brien had to come off.  I am not sure what is tactical in swapping a winger for a winger.

Tactics were all wrong and the application of said tactics was catastophic, only Macca, Paynter and Amankwaah came out of the game with any of my respect, perhaps I'm being unfair on Lucas, he had no chance with that shambles in front of him.

I've no idea what Cuthbert was up to, his distribution was some of the worst I've ever seen, but then the rest of the back four were embarrasing in that respect too, don't suppose it helped them that Timlin was completely annonymous and offered no easy ball to them at all.  What did they think would happen if they kept just getting their head down and aimlessly hitting the ball as far as they could?

It's definately clear to me that we desperately need another cm to partner JD, Easton and Timlin are so one dimensional and as such it's just too easy for the opposition to completely take them out of the game.

Macklin should have started, Macca in that position was a recepie for disaster, especially given that the defence were having their own private 'who can kick it furthest' competition.

I could go on and on, as i'm sure we all could but I'll end by just saying that I felt completely let down yesterday, that performance was a complete insult to all of us who had been looking forward to the new season.

I'm not after my money back but that was a couple of hours of my life that I'l never get back, the squad have got some serious making up to do for that.

Really? I've just watched the goals on the iplayer and think that although he couldnt have done a great deal in stopping them, his positioning looks suspect on the first three, and on the opener is just bizarre. It seems Mr Lucas is a big fan of No Mans Land

I think that it's widely acknowledged that the team selection was bizarre.  Cuthbert being in defence when he'd not played more than 45 minutes or so pre-season, McNamee being asked to play just behind Paynter where JPM or Macklin had used in most pre-season games. That said, there were also some serious underperformances by some of the people in the red shirts.

What came through too from Fred's & others post (& in some ways it is the most annoying feature of all) was the lack of passion, fight or commitment. I think we can forgive a defeat but a lack of desire - never.

However, yesterday was the first game of the season & whilst it was a huge & massive disappointment the team do really owe the fans big committed performances over the rest of the month. If Wilson can communicate that to the players & they respond appropriately, then maybe yesterday will a valuable lesson for them.

Exactly, he could have done an Andy King & called us all wankers. 
And although that day at Barnsley wasn't 5-0, it was just as gutless a performance on Day 1 of the season.  And come to think of it just as fucking hot!

Both teams were a bit half arsed at Barnsley in 2005. We could even have sneaked a draw with a penalty and we were rubbish. Gills really put a shift in yesterday, and rightly put us to the sword, they ran miles.

Actually quite refeshing to see a team play at high tempo with high workrate. The English way. You dont see it enough from professional sides at our level.

It wasnt just the tempo or the workrate. Several players really didnt look like they had a clue what they were doing (Cuthbert, Lescinel, McNamee, even Timlin).

I didn't go to the game but for the goals we just looked like we didn't compete. Outmuscled and outworked.

Only Norwich trumped us it seems.

I just popped in to say hey, and I'm not here to give you any shit, just here to say good luck for the rest of the season.

You played really bad yesterday but its all about picking yourselves up and getting on with it. Last season in League 2 we lost to Shrewsbury 7-0 but we picked ourselves up and got to Wembley in the Play-Off Final and we beat the team who earlier in the season thrashed us.

From what I could see you need to tighten up in defence and get a decent striker. 3 of the 5 goals conceded wasn't down to Lucas being crap, rather your defence not stopping our attacks from down the wings.
