Title: Swindon V Northampton Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 06:27:27
Another clean sheet would be nice.

Seems Vincent is doubtful, so I expect Jack Smith to start.

Im worried that Im feeling too positive because of the last two wins and that ill expect us to win tonight but be disappointed when we don't.

Ill go for 2-2.

My first away day in a while so really looking forward to it, hopefully we can continue the good form and sneak a win.  I reckon we will have a score draw tho and it will finish 2-2.

Bit worried about this one, much more of a battle than a game of footy.

Northampton are a bit more of an agressive side and play less on the floor than either Southend or Hereford.

Hope to escape with a draw.

We aren't likely to win 3 in a row.

2-1 Northampton.

I watched the highlights from their thumping of Stockport at the weekend - from what I can tell, Stockport were very, very shit. I think so long as we go there and churn out another solid performance we're more than capable of taking the point most of us would be grateful for. 1-1.

Just about everyone seems to be hoping for a draw...which is probably code for 'we're expecting to lose this one'.  I would be delighted with a point, but have a feeling that Northampton will sneak this.

Excited already........Chilly and Bruno arriving at 3.30 ish and then pick up the Southmoor massive enroute.

I would be delighted with a draw tonight.

I think the last time we did this was promotion season Torquay, Bury and Mansfield.

Hoping for a least a draw, but praying that our recent performances carry on, and now that Cox has started scoring again will mean we may sneak it.

Think 1-1, hope 1-2.

Of all the teams around us, Northampton are in the best position - 1 game in hand after tonight and a positive goal difference (compared to the double digit gd's of everyone else)

I'd like to say a Town win, but as someone said, their style is physical and they have a big fat lump of a striker, who they will be pinging balls at all night, so I think that we will get a draw.  Don't see us losing at all.

The real incentive is to possibly jump 4 or 5 places if we win and Crewe get beat or draw.

I reckon we need to take at least 2 points from the Northampton or Yeovil games, primarily to stop them getting the full points. If we do lose them both the table won't make pretty reading.

All depends on which team turns out tonight. If its the one that turned up for the last two matches we'll come away with a draw at minimum. If its that bunch of useless twats that we normally see, we'll get stuffed.

I'm getting a good feeling though, I reckon we'll win 3-1.

Good point regarding draws stopping them getting points as much as it gives us 2 more points

To be fair, how many times have we been rubbish since DW took over? Brighton which was the 1st game and he only had a few days to look at things, And Hartlepool where we lost to a last second dodgy penalty, They are the only two that spring to mind,(oops just remembered Cheltenham) but bar those, we've looked pretty decent in most of them.

Looking at the table, even if we win tonight its only 5 points clear and still so easy to drop if we have a few more hiccups.  Nervous next few weeks thats for sure.

4 points from the next 2 games will do just nicely, and for herthab's sake it'd be best to get a win on Saturday. Based on that, a draw will suffice tonight. Of course, to take all 3 points would be lovely!

Title: Re: Swindon V Northampton Matchday Thread.
Post by: A Gent Orange on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, 17:11:46
Akinfenwa is a brutal but effective player as he proved at the CG when Northampton came down here last time. 80 minutes of crap and then for 10 minutes when he came on of decent chances out of nothing. Last time at ours out they looked very narrow and that really helped us so hopefully our newly dangerous wingers will get some freedom to get at them and then we can do some damage.

I'll only feel confident of getting anything if the Akinfenwa isn't playing (still guessing at that spelling) otherwise it will be hard work and I'll take 1-1.

You have to remember they also have Scott Vernon who is no mug, so perhaps put Greer on Vernon and leave Morrison to deal with the fat lump?

weve been in top flight as you have...cant believe your history makes you that much better

in general do opposition fans such as yourselves perceive northampton as a club doing well in league 1 or doing crap cuz you/others think we are loaded and should be doing better ? just wandering...

I think swindon should be top half really, decent gates 6000,7000 most games, i am laughing at brighton though theyve spent abs shed loads as have huddersfield who think there all that (worse than leeds) when came here and what are they doing - nothing.

we could still end up mid-table and thats not bad for a team who can only pick rejects ie. bayo, constantine, doig, gilligan, mcgliesh (gone) and various youngsters

How could anybody perceive a club in a relegation battle to be doing well? The way I see it, your crowds are too small for you to push towards the top of this division and despite what you might think, the fact that WE outbid you for somebody suggests your financial power isn't all that great. I'd rank you as a mid-table kind of side on paper. Quite frankly, we should be mid-table as well but 3/4 of a season of half-arsed performances hes left us in the brown stuff

Cobblerclaret, of the sides I've seen this season you should definitely be mid-table, I do not think you are relegation fodder like the Hereford, Cheltenahm, Yeovils of this world. We are in our position because of bad management in the Malpas days and the lack of management to replace him, and of course the stupid mistakes at the back before Wilston arrived, we are a lot stronger now but need a result tonight, we also should be much higher in this league.
It seems just a month ago that you were safe in mid-table, what the hell went wrong with your lot?

One of my old girlfriends used to live in Northampton...and I have to admit I quite liked the place.  It was a long time ago now, but I remember Abington being a decent part of town with some lovely Victorian architecture and a nice park.

It's also quite a large town (maybe slightly larger than Swindon).  And given the size of the place, the only reason I could think of that the football team wasn't better supported was the presence of the rugby club just up the road.

Three points tonight please.

Population of Northampton is quite a bit bigger maybe 25-30,000 relative to Swindon, therefore their crowds should be quite a bit bigger.  I wouldn't know if this was the case. As I don't take too much notice of The Cobblers.

Anyone remember Northampton when they shared with the cricket ground ?
The visitors seating was on a lorry trailer with seats in it and I recall down one side of the pitch there was wooden seating + the visitors terrace was below ground level !
Can't remember the score the year I went, as I went with the late lamented (and avid town fan) Cozy Powell in his Ferrari - so the match was always going to be an anti-climax    :car:

The old County Ground (Northampton) was a shit hole, the pitch used to get battered in bad weather with only having essentially 3 sides and that awful open terrace, I used to hate going there and never saw us win there in 3 attempts in the 80's.

I do not miss that place!

Cheers all. Billy Simon Painter Cox is still far better than some of the Welsh names my partner has already come up with.

Carlisle get one back. Not that it will matter to a mid-table team like us.

A decent 45 minutes. I hope Wilson gives them a bollocking for conceding so early :)

I'm happy that we've got 3 but lets be honest we've been here before....

Cox only needs two more to equal Sam Parkin's best league goals tally in an individual season. That was 25 in his first season here - he got 26 overall which Coxy matched this evening.

Shame he probably won't stay to build on this but I'm happy he's scoring again at a crucial stage for us and him.

At the start of the season when none of the stupid bookies knew he was. I use Betfair so people had a bit more of a clue, but I still got 22's. Most of the high street were offering 25-40s, I seem to remember JPC and a few others got 50s.

I don't think a loss at Yeovil will be that bad after tonights result. Obviously a draw or win for us would be better but we've got some breathing space now so a loss won't be brown trouser time.

I'm more worried about the number of goals Cox is scoring, that is 7 in 3 games. Part of me wants him to stop scoring and playing crap so no one will want to sign him in the summer.

Think Wilson has got it right, to set up and attack...we're never going to win games 1-0, so we might as well play to our strengths as they now are, and attack teams, and hope to score one more than them.

Cox has elevated himself into very elite company with 3 away hat tricks in one season...not checked yet, but I'd guess only Harry Morris might have achieved such a feat.

Whether we get £1 million (which I doubt) or not...it will demonstrate that spending money can generate a better return than picking players up on free transfers.  The board might be tempted to spend again.  You never know.

I used to hate it when we sold our best players, but now I accept it as an essential part of our business model.  Simon Cox may not be around to see us in to the Championship one day, but the cash his transfer will generate will help to get us there.

To be fair to the board, have they ever failed to come up with the cash when there was justification? They coughed up for Cox and the signings made since January (loan and trialists) will be costing them a good few quid in salaries.

I don't think that will change, or that Cox being sold or not will change it either. If the right player is available at the right price then they'll find the money. What they won't do is just piss money away on players left right and centre which won't improve the quality of the squad - which I reckon is the right attitude.

Whatever fee we get for Cox, how much will go to Reading? Surely there was a sell on fee or some kind of clause that means we wont get to keep all the cash.

Cox made his debut for Swindon as a permanent signing in Swindon's 1-0 loss away to Huddersfield Town on 9 February 2008,[14] and scored his first goal in the following game, a 3-0 home victory over Cheltenham Town.[15] He has since scored 2 hat-tricks, both away from home, against Hartlepool and Scunthorpe and becomes the first Swindon Town player since Bill Stephens in the 1946/47 season to achieve this rare goalscoring feat.[citation needed] On the 8th January 2009, it was reported that Cox was wanted by Fulham and Bolton for a fee believed to be in the region of £1 million.

And to be fair to fitton an co they havent said know to wilson have they kanu and greer and tudor jones and now maybe another before deadline day shows they are willing to back there manager.

You've got to doth the proverbial cap to Billy Paynter too. His input in this strikeforce cannot be underestimated. Shame such a good strikeforce has gone largely to waste this season.

Still, a great result!

Northampton Match Report:  Warning, This May Not be Objective
http://www.ntfc.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10425~43475,00.html

Billy Paynter added a third for Swindon on 40 minutes. The Swindon striker looked to be in an offside position when he picked up Simon Cox's flick but the assistant referee kept his flag down and Paynter was allowed to continue. He made his way into the penalty area and held off the challenge of Mark Hughes before flicking a cool finish into the far corner.

The Cobblers were now flying forward, and a trip on Andy Holt on the Cobblers left earned Sean Morrison a caution. The visitors regained their two goal advantage, despite a suspicion of a foul, when Billy Paynter barged Jason Crowe off the ball before delivering a cross that Simon Cox chested in from close range to become the first player to score a hat trick against the Cobblers in a league game since Stuart Roberts for Wycombe in January 2003.

Just got back (not too far for us tonight).

Don't know about the team but I'm exhausted.

Gave away a sloppy goal in the first couple of mins, and then were fucking awesome for the rest of the first half and could have scored more goals.

Second half, Northampton got the ball forward quickly and lumped it over the top a lot and caused us a lot of problems. We didn't help ourselves by dropping deeper & deeper. Have to say when they scored the disallowed goal (which was up the other end) I thought we'd fucked it up.

Onwards and upwards

Why do most people think that Coxy will get sold?

I would see it as a sign of real ambition from the board if they kept hold of him. Yeah, so money (and a lot of it!) is money, but...

I guess on the one hand he could do a Barry Corr the first game into next season and end up crocked but alternatively if we - looking more likely now - do stay up, he could possibly fire us into the Championship next season.

I'm not being funny here, I'm just interested in the 'business model' in people's minds.

I think it's the ambition of Cox that makes us unlikely to keep hold of him if an offer from a top championship side or higher comes in. Yeah we can tell him tough, he's got a couple more years on his contract, but in reality I doubt we would. Unhappy strikers aren't as good.

Players rule and it will be Cox who will decide if he stays or goes - fact of life - all the board can do is get the best price and in the case of George Ndah they didn't even get that.

strikers are the most sought after players.ones that bang in goals regularly will always be targetted by clubs.every player has his price,if coxys is met then bye bye.
at least it looks like his goals may well keep us in league 1

At least with the current board you have to think we will get a decent price for Coxy if we do sell.

Unlike the previous bunch of muppets who probably would have sold him in january for £250k.

I would also like to think that any money generated by the club would be used to strengthen the team.

I guess only time will tell.

Fair enough.

But do we know what his ambitions are? Has anybody got the inside track or has he said anything about them?

As PD pointed out, I'm sure he doesn't want to sit on the bench for a Prem club, so Championship is probably his aim. Why not do that with STFC for the sake of one season? The bloke would be a fucking Town hero and legend. That would probably count for something with him?

Not smarting over him but just pointing out that we didn't get the best price at the time because Ndah wouldn't move to Watford who offered approx £300k more than Wolves.

yeah, they only did that to stop us getting into the play-offs.

As soon as they did that, in the summer they sold him off to Aberdeen.

Still believe that if we had kept him we would have stopped Blackburn from getting in the play-offs that season.

That signing was one of the most cynical signings of all time. They didn't want him but they knew that signing him was the best chance they had of the play offs - and it worked.

Urban myth, I've always thought.

Devastating though selling Dunc was, I recall our results actually improving without him.  Drew a lot, won a few and ended up with an outside chance on the last day at Derby - and what a day that wasn't.

A good assessment, one I agree with...although I head the whistle before they 'scored' at the end, so I was relaxed :D :D

I thought Paynter was motm worked hard, set up two, scored one...really good perfromance.

Had a very goo dpint of Landlord before heading home and listened to Danny Baker as he sung about Fraser Digby's washbag to the tune of Sweet Home Alabama.

Sometimes being a Town rocks...tonight was one of those nights...Thank Cox. (As an atheist I look for dieties elsewhere ;))

Didn't their chairman actually ask Dalglish which other teams player was most likely to stop them going up, he said Shearer, so they signed him? Or is that just an old wives tale?

Don't see how they did anything wrong, or that we can blame them or anything. We didn't have to sell him.

I'm still pissed about the money we got for Fjortoft, that was daylight robbery.

Listening tonight on the radio was one of the most painful things I've gone through in a long time! Fair play to Wilson and the lads though, 12 points and 10 goals in 8 days, and Coxy flying up the goalscoring chart. Having heard that nearly 800 Town fans went, I was worried about getting a ticket for Yeovil. Thankfully it seems their terrace holds a good 1750 so all is well!

Just got home....

3 away games this year...i've seen us win two of them!

Cox and Paynter were both pure class tonight....but we made hard work of it. I was physically exhausted by the end of the game.

Not sure where Phil Smith was for their freekick, but then again the view I had was crap.

Cox's second goal was brilliant, lob from 25 yards

I heard the whistle from the disallowed goal before it went in so wasn't worried about that. But in the 2nd minute of injury time, they got a shot in, and you were just expecting to see all the home fans stand up because it was in, but Smith managed to hold it. One of my worst ever moments in football though!

And Nigel Clough was in the pub before hand - so expect Cox to Derby.

What a brilliant away day that was, can honestly say I have never seen us win 4-3 away.

Thought Cox and Paynter tore them to pieces, we look a great counter attacking team at times what with the wide boys as well.

Despite almost chucking it away the back 4 stood up to some intense pressure.  That will do there confidence the world of good that they survived to get us the 3 points, Greer was again impressive.

Also thought both Tudor Jones and Timlin put in another good shift and at times bossed the midfield.

One of my personal highlights was the young lad at the bottom of there stand giving it large after there disallowed 4th, must of took him 10 mins to realise it had been disallowed, he hid his face whilst we all mocked him, class!

we had been 4-1 down away at scunthorpe and drew 4-4 few months back, that wernt bad but of all the years following the claret this is the worst in terms of individual errors, unbelievable. we finished 9th last year but weve had an awful injury list and the back up players are not upto it, not even god knows if we'll stay up but it'll be down to the players attitudes and not skill, i know that much.

credit where it's due... I've been among those quick to get on the players' back this season, and I must admit while I always believed in Wilson in the long term, I was beginning to question whether he had enough to turn it around this year.

We're not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination, but fair play to both for what they've achieved in the last seven days. Wilson has never swayed in his beliefs, or in his own ability, while the players have showed tremendous ability, spirit and character, especially last night, and especially having dropped into the bottom four last week. Paynter continues to impress me. Some games he'll simply be outfought but he keeps going. And Timlin, he's been immesnse when we've needed someone to stand up, be counted and take charge. Him and Greer have been instrumental. Get Timlin a ball winner next to him next season and we'll have a good central midfield.

Fair plays lads, just keep it going. Whatever happens, at least we're fighting now and showing some passion, as a fan we can't ask for more than that.

Some guy always yells at Paynter in the Town End saying he is a useless prick.

Imagine what paynter could do if he didnt look fucked after 20 minutes of most games

Not a critisism, I think he's as fit as he will ever be, he's just not particually naturally athletic

Great result, reckon we are safe now.
Hardly world beaters yet though are we, but its a start.

You're right we're not but if you want to support world beaters then you picked the wrong team to support.

Did anybody feel that Smith should of done better with the freekick?

It didnt look as if it went into the corner but the middle of the goal and it seemed to me that Smith was in the middle of the goal.

Looked to me as if it went through him....

I think he lost his footing, as the free kick really wasn't that special.  His other saves made up for it though.

I'm sure that is true of most stands. There are about ten who do it in DR. Not me though, I mutter under my breath, it's how we do things in the DR.

We are in a much improved position, it's in our hands. But we have to play teams around us. A loss at Yeovil and those words will haunt you.

We need to finish it off (52 points) sooner rather than later. We have seen how things can improve in just a week. They can go the other way too.

I have to say credit is due when credit is due. I thought you lot were very good last night and did a professional job. Lucky to hold onto a win in the end after nothing was wrong with the goal disallowed, but I bet you knew I was going to say that. Paynters goal looked offside, but a very well taken finish, i'd probably give you that one ;)

I was sitting in the upper west corner, where the home section sang. I thought the overall atmosphere was very good and your fans were noisy at times. I, along with many other cobblers fans just have absoulte admiration for Simon Cox, a few mistakes from us costing goals but not bad for Cox to score a hatrick against his former loanee club (who he nearly joined but wanted more money :P). I enjoyed the banter from you guys last night and I hope you all the best for the rest of the season. Last night game was truely wonderful.

See you all next year :)
Good luck keeping hold of Coxy

You wanted more money, we wanted a decent striker and League One football. Each to their own... ;)

We have got a very good striker (in Bayo) and League One football too :)

So it all works out ;)

That was my favourite Tuesday night away game this season. Good atmosphere and good entertainment.

BTW you scored 3, not 4, because you are not allowed to foul people, wait for the flag to go up, and the whistle, and then hit it in the corner of the goal and pretend it counts.  ;)

Good luck staying up, you're a convenient away day and there's others I'd rather see relegated.

I agree, but we are currently top of the "Relegation contenders league table" if you like. A win at Yeovil and there's very little chance of even a Swindon team ending up in trouble

But I can sense an air of complacency amongst the fans now...let's hope it doesn't transmit to the players.

Think you're confusing optimism with complacency there Reg.
No one I know is certain we'll stay up, but we stand a much better chance now than we did 2 weeks ago.

A bit of positivity makes a fucking change this season.

Thats harsh, certainly the first one was right in the corner - no one was getting that.

Third looked decent on the highlights, god knows how their man got so much time and space in our box!!

Smiffy did OK, great save from Akinfuckinpushya in the first half in particular. In fact great performance all round (even Jack Smith who started off very shaky) especially BP and Coxy (and I've slated BP in the past) who look very potent with our improved midfield now looking for ball into their feet as well as long ball.

Only critical thing for me all game was where the ref got 4 mins injury time in the second half ????? and then played an extra minute !

I thought he could have done better with the first at the time, seemed to just bobble passed him, but on the highlights is does look like the fat man struck it a bit better than I had first thought.  The free kick was a poor one to let in, the camera angle makes it look good, as do the commentator's comments, but that really was quite central.  Agree about the third good finish that.

Love BP's goal though, didn't think he had it in him!!  Never offside, nor was it a free kick when he took the ball from their full back for Cox's hat trick as some cobblers have stated.

As for their disallowed goal, well you can see the fat man in there by Smith, making no effort to get to the ball, just being a nuisance, so I can understand why the ref blew.

Trust me to goaland spoil cox's hat-trick,but i've just seen the highlights and it seems to me that the first of cox's was an OG,cant see how it was goin towards goal off cox's head.

His secind and paynters were class, i recon paynters was the better of the two, they way he did that defender was pure quality.

Not sure that the free kick didn't take a little nick off the wall which change the flight slightly

Coxy's first defnitely goes in off the defender. A change of luck a last, two games in a row.

Different types of goals to be fair - I think Billy is more capable of goals like the Walsall one, as we've seen before he's not afraid to have a pop from distance. I think the northampton one asked a lot more from him - the way he committed the defender was brilliant, as was his finish. Also required a turn of pace you'd not expect from him.

That said, both fucking ace goals.
