Title: STFC vs Walsall Matchday Thread
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 09:03:29
A win tonight is badly needed.  We have given ourselves a pat on the back for the odd hard-won draw in recent games, but it's three points we need tonight, not one.

Walsall are above us but have lost 6 of the 13 games they have played away from home.  We need this one.  Looking forward to seeing the starting line up after yesterday's signings.

I feel that tonights game is mega important for the club.
With the new players on board a win will set us up nicely for the tough period ahead.
Come on you reds.

I'm cautiously optimistic. We've been here before haven't we? It's got 1-1 written all over it and such a result is not good enough.

We have to be on form because Clayton Ince is a good goalkeeper and has saved Walsall a number of times this season including against Hereford on Saturday.

I've predicted a win as Walsall are beatable but so are we!

4-0. Razak hat-trick and Cox to grab one too.

(Maybe a tad over optimistic? You never know!)

Not at all r4 ... Cox has been known to grab a goal here and there (17 times) and the clincher is that Razak only scores in hatricks for Swindon ... so far. And I looked through the prediction thread and found that positivity is raging like an epidemic, there unless you're aka lucien who seems immune at the moment. Even our resident curmudgeon has been infected.

Well reasoned! Although my hopes of a clean sheet go way off the logarithmic scale of optimism!

Seeing as I'm off till Feb 9th I thought about coming back for this, but I decided going out on the lash down in Pompey with me mates would be considerably cheaper at £1 a drink, £2 a double, and  I thus opted for that instead.

Fuck you, football.

Sorry Neville. You make a valid point.

Although you could argue that by describing someone as moany and tempramental many people would just assume they were French

"Nothing is getting past greer, he looks the business and Ifil is playing better because of it. The defence is the best its been this season by miles. McGovern playing really well MOM so far, Nalis and Allen working hard and playing well. robson Kanu looks a brilliant signing, all over the pitch one minute he is down the left the next down the right, a great player."

What can I say...

First 75 mins we actually looked quite good!  Greer was excellent I thought considering how long he hasn't played and Vincent deserved MOTM.  Shame we went to ABSOLUTE pieces when he went off.  Timlin was utterly awful and I'd rather see Kennedy as a back up.  Really disappointed with him.

Cox goal was sublime and Amankwah and Paynter took theirs well.  Thought Amankwah was the best I'd seen him play today.  Far more composure.

Not sure on Allen and Nalis in the middle but time will tell.

Robson Kanu definitely has potential - did very well also.

All in all, a good game with a lot of positives and progress.

The two goals were so disappointing but we got 3 points!  Woop.

Oh and to note - Zaaboub is a diving cheating twat!

Just got back. What a game! and what a fantastic goal by Simon Cox, sheer, sheer class. Greer was fantastic, as was Kanu, who was very effective in the first half, not so much so in the second. Vincent going off changed the game. Timlin was absolutely shocking, gave his man about 20 yards to run, never got anywhere near the winger, Ifil made a mistake for the first goal, Brezovan came out too late for the second goal. Last minute they had two corners I was shitting myself, literally. Then their player had a shot just outside the area and it just went wide. I was so fucking relieved to hear the final whistle. It was nail-biting stuff at the end, but it wouldn't be STFC without drama, would it?! We were so good up until Vincent went off, Wilson made a big mistake there IMO. But, we got the win, and I'm delighted, especially after hearing that Leyton Orient won. COME ON YOU REDS!

Post by: Rich Pullen on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 22:11:22
I think Wilson was playing it safe with Vincent and rightly so, the guy has been out injured for so long and you really would expect to win at home when 3-0 up and playing well.

EDIT: What Luci said  :)

Title: Re: STFC vs Walsall Matchday Thread
Post by: swindon-chap on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 22:12:55
Well, whatever the reason, Timlin was shocking. Surely Wilson now realises he isn't a left-back. Kennedy is far better.

Ooooh we won. First 75 we played well and were in complete control then one mistake and we did our best balls it up.

Geer was ace, Vincent was fantastic, Robson-Kanu looked good in the first half but faded.

Paynter comes back into the side and Cox starts scoring again.

Although im very happy with the win and the majority of the performance, lets not kid ourselves and go into super happy clappy we're ace mode because Walsall were fucking bollocks.

the last part of what DV said i agree with because Walsall were fucking awful. very impressed with the 1st 75 mins and then Jerel makes a mistake and they are back in the game. Robson-Kanu looks like he has potential, Greer is just a no nonsence defender and was very solid.

Greer MOM.
Vincent did well, didn't look to ring rusty.

Didn't think the central midfield would cope but they did well for 75, then under pressure didn't.

Cox back to near best with loads of running and a superb goal.

Amankwha OK but Jack Smith unlucky to lose place in squad and perhaps team (bust up?) .

Ifil OK until mistake.

Brez poop but couldn't do much about goals

Bernimans bald spot shines in the floodlights..

Paynter well struck goal and seems to make Cox play better despite being ropey himself.

All in all a good game that we nearly threw away despite being uber comfortable for 75. I thought we started to lose shape before Vincent went off but were sort of coping, but Timlin exasperated the problem when he came on.

 3 points is 3 points.

Title: Re: STFC vs Walsall Matchday Thread
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 22:28:13
hmmm where to start really. First 70-75 mins we absolutely controlled the game. After Ifil's fuck up at the back the confidence seemed to drop right off. Took my uncle for the first time in over a year today after he slagged the team off without watching them.

Brezovan - Didn't have much to do, but what he did do, he fucked about a bit, Would have killed him (not really) if the goal went in right at the end. Do we bring Smith back or just get another Keeper? Great shot stopper but collecting the ball he is pants.

Amankwaah - Wilson clearly knows how to get the best out of him, Was well chuffed for the bloke

Ifil – Gutted for him, at fault for first goal but up until that stage looked like the Ifil of old.

Greer – First 5-10 minutes I though “oh shit” but this was just rust and was a very good player indeed, Be great if we can keep him perm. Wonder how he will fit in the team when Aljofree comes back if he stays?

Vincent – How we missed him, absolutely superb. We fell apart when he came off.

McGovern – Hit and miss really.

Nalis  - His passing was ok at times, not a long term solution in midfield

Allen – Tried to get a bit more physical than he was previously I think but ended up on the ground quite a bit, not as much as Zaaboub mind. Was surprised to see him in the starting XI but he didn’t do too bad.

Robson-Kanu – Absolute quality first half getting balls into the box,  Walsall sussed him second half and was largely absent, exciting player.

Paynter  - Scored which will do his confidence well and got stuck in. Looked lethargic at times but did well

Cox - Cracking goal add another zero to the transfer fee please. Great to see him scoring again.

75 mins we were good. Work still needs to be done but it’s starting to come together, a draw at Oldham would be a good result.

Smith was ill, no bust up.

Thought Nalis should have been replaced mid 2nd half as he seemed to tire quite severely, would have rather seen Timlin replace him and have Kennedy on as left back to replace Vincent, who was ace.  (I know Kennedy wasn't on the bench - or at least i don't think he was - but he should have been).

Enjoyed the match though, but I couldn't believe we nearly let them back in.  Some very nice footie at times.

Walsall were bollocks, had one game plan and reminded me of ourselves in recent games. Only reason they got back into the game is because we sat too deep and fell asleep.

I thought the loanees were magnificent, I hope whoever was moaning at Wilson for bringing these lads are eating their words.

Our central midfield were passengers for most of the game, which is why it was good the front duo were back on the same page and the wide men had a good game. Whilst Greer impressed me, so did Cox - he looked back to his 'usual' self and not just because of the goal. Just looked more eager. He was literally begging Sturrock (when he came on) to play him through every time.

I think Cox's goal was better than anything Le Tissier ever scored, and I'm a huge fan of Matthew so if you are reading this then you should know that isn't the kind of compliment that I throw around lightly.

It is a shame that Aidy Williams has told the players not to go on the internet because I'm sure that Simon would like to see what I have to say about his work tonight :)

I wasnt over the moon when I heard the midfield pairing, they did ok but I think a major part was played by the fact Walsall had no midfield and just lumped.

Our middle two didnt alright, but the minute Walsall got the ball down in midfield and passed it we were chasing shadows.

If anything it was all a bit 'Tranmere'

I am happy with the 3 points but Walsall were absolute shite and their defence resembled ours. A good shank from Amankwanah for the 1st. Superb goal by Cox for the 2nd but I thuoght he was off. the 3rd goal was a fuck up by their keeper - Paynter shot right at him.
The 2 we gave away again were Keystone Kops stuff.
Greer looked pretty good apart from one salmon like leap under the ball. Vincent was very good apart from one skinning in the 1st half. One of those 2 for MOM. Robson Kanu looks very good.
I wasn't quite sure what Wilson was doing with the subs. Timlin was absolute dog shit. At the moment he's a complete liability. Not sure why Macca came on - and what a bottle job at the end on their keeper.
Overall its 3 points won but against a decent side we'd have got dicked and all our frailties were still there.

Eh?  Vincent had to come off, as he's played zero first team football for the last x months.  And Macca came on to freshen it up a bit, as JPM had quite a quiet 2nd half.  Don't think Wilson could have done much else, given the bench he selected.

I though Cox was offside too. Also for the third I can't believe he wasn't flagged. Sure he didn't try and play the ball, but he was certainly 'active' in my opinion being right in line with the shot.

That said we deserved to score 3 on the number of chances created.

Sign of a good striker = shooting straight at the keeper and scoring.
Sign of a Blair Sturrock = shooting straight at the keeper and not scoring.
Sign of a Trevor Benjamin = shooting straight at the keeper and hitting it wide.

We won. Thank fuck.

Cox, great finish.

Kanu, good first half.

Ifil, good first half and half the second.

Greer, not bad, like to see more, had a good effect on the rest.

Amankwaah, looked like he can actually play at this level for the first time.

Midfield, hmmm, was calling for a change after 60 mins, Nalis looked knackered.

Vincent, welcome back, hope you put in that kind of performance every week.

Paynter yes, as for the rest, hard to tell from the TE, but our back 4 looked a lot more communicative, all of them were pointing and shouting.

Apart from a mad two mins i saw alot of positives tonight more than i have seen all season in fact. Amankwa grew in confidence, jpm played as a winger and every player wanted the ball. First home win since oct i think and for reg it did not look like a team who have accepted league 2

I'd say the biggest positive was that we looked to move the ball a lot quicker than we have done.

Walsall were really nothing though. The real test will be if we can do this consistently.

It was a good win, don't get me wrong, but I was optimistic after Orient and were were bollocks after that.

I think the point is that there a 12 pretty average-crap teams in this division. The consistency has to be found in our crucial run of games which are upcoming.

Amankwaah was well good today. Vincent was mega, we were great untill ifil fucked up.

Ifil made a mistake for the goal. No argument. But where the fuck was Greer? Ifil had no back up whatsoever when they broke away as his fellow center half was in nosebleed territory near the town end, gave the cunting ball away cheaply, then couldn't get back quick enough to cover Ifils mistake.

I'm picking holes, I know. Greer and Ifil both had a fucking good game apart from that mistake and it was brilliant to see Greer constantly encouraging the players around him. He was a bit rusty to start with but settled down very well. A very good player, no doubt.

I think DW's decision to make Ifil captain was a masterstroke which paid off. I can't remember the last time I saw Ifil make so many right decisions, clearances and connective passes in one match. He's gone from being almost transfer listed and thrown on the scrap heap by cunty Morrice Malpas a few months ago, to being a competent, quick thinking and reliable defender again. I hope for his and our sake that he can keep that going regardless of whether he remains captain or not.

Vincent was fucking awesome considering how long he's been out of the game. So good to see him back in the side.

DW made some brave decisions in his team selection tonight. He's probably pissed off a few senior pro's along the way, which is tough shit on them as we've been spoon-fed a massive diet of shit football and mediocre performances for too fucking long. Something had to give.

Wilson doesn't seem to give a fuck about pecking orders amongst the players, their ego's or their bullshit excuses for under performing.

He's drawn a line, been brave and picked a team to win on the night. It's up to those who were left out to get their act together or fuck off somewhere else.

I'm not getting too excited after one half-decent performance and three very welcome points, but it's nice to know we have a manager who knows what he wants, how he's going to get it and does things his way.

Coxs goal was the best goal I have seen live at the County Ground that I can remember (with the exception of Fallons goal against City).
Taking the ball out of the sky with a touch that tees it up for him to lob it over the keeper from that distance......i'm looking forwards to someone sticking that on Youtube.

It was ok and well taken, but far from the best I've seen. A couple from Fjortoft come to mind, one where he ran on to the keepers clearance and lobbed their keeper with his first touch and the other where he curled it in to the top right hand corner from the edge of the penalty box. A few Mark Walters goals as well, the ones where he somehow (seemed to) lob the keeper whilst he was stood on the goal line.

As for the rest of tonights performance it was the same old story. They played some decent football and got the lead and then turned to shit for the last half hour and did their best to throw the game away.

On the plus side, I reckon we've got a decent squad especially with the new additions (especially Kanu who looked quality) and they just need to get some confidence and improve their discipline. At least half the goals conceded at home have come from simple, basic mistakes that shouldn't have happened.

Finally, how the hell did the ref come up with 4 minutes of injury time and then go on to play 4 1/2 minutes?

Sure they were international players (though Walters had long since retired from that level) but they were playing for Swindon at the Country Ground when they scored the goals I'm referring to.

I wasn't trying to put Cox down either, I still can't understand what the fuck someone with his quality and work rate is doing here. He's easily Championship material and I'd love to see him given a go in the Premiership, he's definitely got a chance of making it big time.

He seems to be getting better as well, he's improved a lot since the first time I saw him play. As regards the goal, on reflection I'd maybe improve my rating to above average but I can't go any higher than that.

People calling the Cox goal the best goal ever at the CG need to get a fucking grip unless you've only been watching for 6 weeks. Very well taken but come on. Fallon vs City? Parkin vs City in the LDV, best move ever with that super cross from Nicholas? Walters' chip agsinst Bolton? Ty Gooden's belter against Barnsley/Huddersfield? Brownlie against Barnet? Fjortoft backwards header against Norwich? FFS I love Cox but that goal's not even in the top 10.

Of those ones you said, I have only actually seen Fallons (which i mentioned as an exception) and Brownlies (which I agree was brilliant, but made better by the timing - and Coxs was better anyway). I've been a Town suppoter for since a small child, but have only been able to afford to go regulary with a season ticket over the last 6-7 years (not 6 weeks) I think it was one of the best i've seen.

Only limited mention in this thread, but Saint Brez was awful.

Nearly cost us at the end with those corners and can't remember him making one good catch from a cross all night. If Smith had perfomed like this we'd never had heard the end of it.

I am still undecided about DW but have to admire his team selection, lots of surprises that in general seemed to work.
Brez is still a bit dodgy though.
The defence was much better , until Timlin came on.
The midfield still needs a hard man.
Cox & Paynter did ok (what can you say about "that" goal). How Cox was not offside for the third goal is beyond me.
We seemed to lose the plot late on and bottled out of a few challenges (Paynter & McNamee)
Good 3 points, now we need more from the next 2 away games.

PS  thought Greer could well be the answer to our fragile defence.

Different eyes eh! I thought Brez was solid, made one very good save 1st five mins from their guy 2 yards out. Agree he was shaky last 10, but when you have your defenders making bad errors that leave you exposed, i guess most keepers would.Once the defence firms up, we'll see less shaky periods.

Why do we always make it so hard for ourselves?

Cox goal was a beaut but Paynters was the most important....my mate was telling me how good Ince was just as he dived over the ball!!   Get in!

20 games left.... i reckon thats enough to get us out of trouble....

New signings looked ok....A defender that doesnt panic is a real asset.

Brez looked dodgy.

McNamee coming on????  What was that all about......sticking on a luxtury player when we need to scrap was a poor decision IMO. Even Ince wrong footed him near the death......

greer and robson-kanu look like excellent acquisitions and that new bloke at left-back was immense...who was he again?

despite saying "oh, i doubt i'll bother again this season" i think i'll be at the sarfend game. have we turned a corner? perhaps so.

nalis was the only player on the pitch last night who didn't look good enough. it's sad really, he was a quality player with decent pedigree and he looked like an old man next to chris allen.

Nalis was terrible, if we had good centre mid's last night we would have won by 5-6.  The most encouraging thing was we had no one stamping there authority on the game in the centre of the park but still went into a comfortable lead.  Thankfully our wide players and strikers were creative enough to give us a big enough threat.

In response to your earlier comment regarding Greer should of been covering Ifil I disagree, if Jerel just did the simple things like Vincent and Greer do he would be better for it.  As that ball came to him when he fucked up he should of just put it in the stand but he tried to do a clever touch and he cost the team a goal.  FWIW I thought Ifil had a good game up to that point.

Nalis did ok, put in some good tackles, and was always an outlet, saying that, on his movement his brain works faster than his legs. good ball for Cox's goal also, which we wouldn't have had with Peacock or pook in the middle, so even a slow nalis is better than those two i'm afraid.

In summary, we were good in the first half (not brilliant, but good) and poor in the second half. The players look to have a bit more fight about them and a bit more confidence.

I thought Brez was poor compared to his last few games, but it probably didn't help that he had an unfamiliar back four in front of him. It was so good to have Vincent back in the team, a good steady-eddie who talked through the whole time he was on the pitch. I thought Greer was excellent and will prove a good signing. The main thing I like about him is that he'll stick his head in where it hurts. I think he's a similar player to Aljofree but braver and has a bit more technical ability.

Robson-Kanu was fucking brilliant first half but faded badly. Walsall's right back constantly stood off him and he basically just took the piss.

I thought central midfield was better than it had been, but still nowhere near good enough. Nalis was two yards off the pace all night and Allen was just a bit too lightweight for my liking. Between the two of them they just didn't get their foot on the ball enough and we spent most of the night just going long ball into the channels. We desperately need a commanding central midfielder who pick a telling pass when we're in posession but also just get a foot on the ball and keep it calm when we're under pressure.

And lastly, it's nice to see Zaaboub is still the same old petulent wanker, but now instead of cheering him for it we can boo him and call him a cunt instead.

I thought Nalis did well for about 60 minutes before losing his legs.

Robson Kanu showed McNamee exactly how to play the wide role.  He didn't seem to have as much of a problem of getting involved, and when he did it was mostly simple direct running only using tricks when needed.  Seemed to tire a little at the end but that's not a worry if he gets a few games I would guess.

Liked Greer, it's a shame he has to put up with Ifil next to him who I continue to maintain has showed he will never live up to his potential.  It's a shame, but his inability to concentrate and grow a footballing brain causes us problems.  Better to have a consistent if not brilliant defender than one who looks like a beast for 88 minutes but continually defies the laws of logic with the other couple of minutes.

Brezovan tried his best to cause problems as well.  I'm worried about him now, thought it was just a case of getting a few games on the bounce that was needed but he seems to have a bunjee rope which keeps pulling him back in whenever he starts to move out to the ball.  The new defence is not excuse for his complete indecision at every cross.  He has the size and should be able to make a decision to come or stay.  If he comes, he keeps coming and clears everyone out, simple.

Overall, good game to watch.  Shame Vincent had to go off, but can fully appreciate why it was needed.  While Timlin had a shocker, it was straight though Ifil's channel where the problems occured.

Greer and Vincent don't half talk well in a game as well.  So much better to see, and given lack of atmosphere these days, hear!

Post by: jonny72 on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 11:19:59
I didn't see any improvement in the defence, it was exactly the same type of performance that has cost us repeatedly this season - solid and capable until they go crazy, lose the plot and lose the game.

Vincent was ok, but it was far from the best performance at left back I've seen this season. Yet another major mistake from Ifil, hopefully he has now run out of second chances and gets dropped. Greer was ok but made far too many mistakes, but I think you can put this down to a lack of matches and there will be an improvement. Amankwaah had a good game, at least I can't remember him fucking up as much as the other three.

No improvement to the defence?  I think you'll be on your own there pal

I thought we looked solid until Ifill's bollock dropping moment, I didnt feel like we were going to concede every time the opposition attacked or had a set piece which i have done for most of this season.

Defence looked decent until timlin came on! Greer looked proper solid all game with plenty of talking. Vincent and Amanankwa looked very good at full back! I thought Nalis did well but tired towards the end and chis allen looked a little inexperienced at times but he battled well! Kanu did a classic wingers job by keeping it simple nothing too fancy with jp on the other wing working hard but no getting foward enough for me! Paynter won lots of balls which was nice to see and coxy goal showed us his value-a class act! Brez looked very nervous and for me his communication is very poor!

All in all a decent game to watch and it was a much better performance and enough for me to think we wont be relegated.

I think our defence looked very good considering Greer hadn;t played for a while or probably even got to know his team-mates, it was only down to Ifil's mistake that we had to endure a nervouis finish, and he doesn;t need to be told it was a shocker. I still think Ifil and Greer is the way forward, with vincent and amankwaah or smith alongisde them.

Thought criticism of allen a bit unfair. Bit leightweight yes, but he did ok. Nalis just looked old and knackered.

No improvement to the defence?  I think you'll be on your own there pal

I thought we looked solid until Ifill's bollock dropping moment, I didnt feel like we were going to concede every time the opposition attacked or had a set piece which i have done for most of this season.

As I said in my post, they looked solid and then lost the plot which is exactly what they've done in plenty of other games. In that regard I don't think there has been any improvement. Walsall weren't a threat until we gifted them a goal and then collapsed, letting them back in to the game. Again, the same thing has happened in plenty of other games so again, no improvement.

Our defence has been pretty decent all season, except for the stupid mistakes which cost us dearly. Its not like they're a complete crock of shit for entire games, they just keep making mistakes they shouldn't be making.

I thought that Allen's movement made thing easier for much else. People seem to get fixated on midfield bite without seeing the other side. With Allen making space cleverly we moved the ball more swiftly and effectively. We kept the ball, we worked the angles, we actually played some triangles - like a proper football team and everything. Like Stockport were.

He also made one superb run between JP and Amnakwaaaaah which pulled the midfielder right in and promised to create a great opening or a great pass. Yes he faded but Wilson clearly sees that he as a football brain and can follow instructions - and perhaps Pook and the rest can't.

As I said in my post in many games this season I dont think we've looked solid at the back at all, we did go through the period (as you describe) of individual errors under malpas but that stopped months ago and just started to look generally shambolic instead as any confidence they had drained out of them.

Yes we panicked like fuck when we conceded the 1st goal, which to an extend is understandable given recent results and our inability to hold on to leads over the season. But until that point there had been a major improvement in my eyes which is probablly due to the inclusion of 2 experienced defeders who have played at a higher level.

I think the important thing to take from tonight is that Walsall were a poor side, but the amount of times we've given away 2 or 3 points to crap teams does't bear thinking about. Three points is the biggest thing, even if we did make it hard on ourselves.

The important thing to take from last night is 3 points.

Let's just keep on doing that this season and then worry about sexy football next season innit, DW doesn't exactly have an easy job ahead of him innit.

It was ridiculous O'clock here and so I was sleeping through the match.

I often contemplate taking a blanket but wonder if its a step too far?? the two old ladies that used to sit in front of me in the Townend used to have a big red and white one they had kniited themselves - perhaps its OK if its your own needlework?

I think everyone's being a bit OTT at how much we imploded. Even after Walsall had the second goal we saw a lot of the ball and apart from a few corners at the end had no other efforts on goal? I can't see how anyone can think that wasn't a vast improvement!

Definitely the best goal ever scored at the County Ground. For Swindon, at least.

Well done Coxy.

Don Rogers scored quite a few unbelievable goals, and made teams like Liverpool look like donkeys.  MoTD goal of the the season used to be laughable, for example after seeing Rogers receive the ball rolled out by Downsborough and then setting off and dribbling it past every opposition player in his way including the opposition goal keeper to tap the ball in the net, with the whole place going nuts before he even got to the penalty area.

I have never seen a crowd respond like they used to when Rogers got possession, it was like an million volt electric charge running through the ground.

I was at the Everton game when Stroud scored that great goal, it's a pity that very few of Don Roger's goals are on video.  The Town played great for the replay at Goodison, unlucky to lose 2:1.

Swindon vs. Arsenal, F.A. Cup Tie, 1970, Record Attendance 34,000

A national newspaper described the pitch as "sewage".

Incidentally, the conditions didn't bother Alan ball, who may have been making his debut for Arsenal.

They dumped a lot of sand on that pitch in the seventies.  The pitch used to be longer and wider.

The pitch in the 70's had a lot of drainage problems and in the 74/75 season they had to dig up
the pitch and replace a lot in the autumn. It was in the shape of a large diamond and took up
almost the entire centre between the two penalty areas.Unfortunately, the turf didn't compact
and wasn't laid very well.In no time at all it turned to mud and sand was added on top.

This problem lasted until the summer of 77 hence the video of the Everton cuptie.During this
period our strikers - Eastoe,Anderson,Moss and Syrett managed pretty well, but it must have
been energy sapping to a lot of players.

I was lucky enough to be almost exactly in line with Kenny Stroud when he scored and it's one
of the best i've seen.Stroudy won quite a few awards that season for his goal.A few months
earlier he scored a screamer with a volley, from the left hand corner of the box against Brighton.

We went 4 - 0 up against Brighton that day,who were the league leaders and the ref abandoned
it with 20 mins to go.They couldn't believe their luck, but fortune smiled on us in the rearranged

I commented on that during the game.  there cant have been more than about 50 of them which is pathetic given that even allowing for rush hour traffic you could do bescott to the CG in 1.5 hours.

Only if 100 of them were in the home end.

It must be tough for Walsall to attract fans, what with Wolves, Brum, West Brom and Villa on the doorstep. But there is no excusing that piss poor turnout.

Quite. We were commenting on the poor showing on Tues and my brother-in-law said "Huh, they've still brought more here than they got in the home game". Slight exaggeration, but I've been surprised by their poor turnout in both games, both in terms of numbers and "quality". Mind, we don't have much to shout about on that front either, despite playing some markedly better football on Tuesday, the atmosphere was lunar-like for the most part.

Cox's goal nearly made me soil myself in delight

The reason we've always had a soggy pitch is that it's set on a base of solid clay..a clue can be found more or less diagonally opposite the CG, back of Shrivenham Road....Marsh Farm.

The whole area at the foot of Old Town has always been susceptible to turning boggy during high rainfall then baking hard in the summer, or at times of high wind.

So the simple solution to a wet autumn and winter, was to chuck tons of Weston's finest on the pitch to soak up some of the water.  It always killed off the grass save for a few bits in the corners....come March, April the ground was often dried solid by winds, so you'd get the classic Div 3 game of, wind blowing the ball around and it bouncing around like a superball....recipe for a crap game.

It'd get seeded in the summer, and so the cycle would start again.

The QPR game referred to was in the last severe winter to hit Britain...1963.

The match was played on rolled snow...with blue lines...some of our players even wore gloves.

The crowd was down about 3,000 down average...probably out of towners not able to get in through snow 3 or 4 foot deep.

The Council eventually cleared roads using diggers and piled up the blocks of by then ice/snow on the bit of park by the Civic Offices....it was ace for building igloos.

I was at the Brighton game right under the Shrivenham Road stand just by the fence separating the Brighton supporters who were locted part way underneath the stand and on the Stratton Bank.  It was cramped under there.  Every time the Town scored, a rather large gentleman loudly yelled in the direction of the fence "Let's Have a Look at the Old Scoreboard" per Bruce Forsyth from the Generation Game.    Every time, an immediate violent reaction occurred, they were totally pissed off and tried to rip down the fence.  It was a good laugh.  Didn't make the rearranged fixture but justice was served.

Wasn't there something in the Life of Brian about drains?
