We'll get beat tonight I think, we seem to struggle against Peterboro in recent seasons, including one of the most boring town performances I can remember, under Kingy I think, a 0-1 defeat, we were completely devoid of any ideas that day.

I think it was this match

11 SEP  Peterborough United (Home)  0 - 1   5,777

The season they went down they beat us 1-0, and the season we went up they beat us 1-0 with Trevor Benjamin scoring after Brezovan dropped it at his feet.

They're a very good side capable of scoring plenty, on a long unbeaten run at the moment as well. We have proven we can compete with the best in this league but we'll need to be on top of our game tonight. Just hope Kanyuka and Morrison don't lose focus, Boyd and Mackail-Smith will punish them if not.

Quietly confident though, we seem to be playing quite well and having Cox back will be a boost. We need the points really, only 3 points above the drop zone at the moment.

From what I remember, we have quite a long unbeaten record for home matches played on Tuesday nights, so I'm quite confident.

I've probably just cursed us though!

18:00   -20:59    - 0 °c. I'm no genius, but doesn't ground frost come out to play about this temperature. Is there any danger of the game getting abandoned? I remember one in January ages ago that did just after half time. The Stratton Bank was fucking freezing that night.

It's gots to be a draw or a win today... If results go against us Bart will be back telling us why Byrne needs to leave ASAP and Holloway must be appointed!!!!

This could be the last one for Byrne, although the indication is that Saturday should be his last one. So to finish with a impressive result would mean he'll leave his post on a hella good note.

Tonights fixtures

Cheltenham v Southend
Colchester v Yeovil
Hartlepool v Bristol Rovers
Huddersfield v Leyton Orient
Leicester v Crewe
Millwall v Carlisle
Franchise v Hereford
Northampton v Leeds United
Oldham v Walsall
Stockport v Brighton
Swindon v Peterborough
Tranmere v Scunthorpe

Stuck at work for the next few hours.  But I've just tuned in to BBC Radio Swindon on the BBC iPlayer and listened to some of the pre-match build up.  Makes me realise how much I miss local Swindon radio (now live 60 miles away, so out of range.)

Maybe I need to stop being so tight and subscribe to the match feed.  What time do they cut the signal on the iPlayer?

Normally they cut it at about 2 or 3 mins to kick off but as stated on here sometimes they do forget to cut the feed, I do begrudge paying £35 a year for what in essence should be a free service, for licence fee payers anyway.

But I am unable to get to many games so I figure that for the cost of me going to one home game including travel to get there that its worth it.

Peterborough line-up

Joe Lewis, Russell Martin, Craig Morgan, Gabriel Zakuani, Tom Williams, Sergio Torres, Dean Keates, Andrew Crofts, George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron McLean.

With our defence' reputation, that's one scary attack.

I think that looking at it from Fittons point of view......Sanchez is an ex international manager (big coup) proven(ish) track record, comes from Reading has been out of work for a year nearly...... but on the down side has a poor record of games/wins.

Probably would be willing to drop down to this divisions, wouldnt want huge wages (for an ex international manager anyway)

Just a feeling I have, I bear in mind that lasy year AF was sprouting about how good a track record MM had when he was appointed.

I'm inclined to agree.

Wycombe G255 W87 L97 D71 - A high profile cup run.

Northern Ireland - Beat Spain, England, Sweden but made little progress in the grand scheme of things (perhaps I'm a little harsh)

Fulham - Awful.

We'd be shit in the league but enjoy a couple of "giant killings"

I'm gutted with that repeat conclusion.

Improvement is being made (and fair play to Byrne in that respect) but I hope we can get this new guy in ASAP.

We'll be fine. I know it's disappointing conceding late equalizers, but its warm, I've got some cider. We've played some of the big hitters in the league over the last 6 games and I've got some posh crisps that were on offer in the supermarket. We've scored late goals that have given us a feeling of happiness and conceded late goals that have caused much frustration, but these crisps are f-f-fresh.

Bloody right. 9 goals in 4 league games and we haven't won one of them. I'd be mightily pissed off if I was the third top scorer in the football league and in a relegation battle.

He didn't blame the fans, he said that it was like a morgue at times and that they (the team) need the crowd when they are down and not just after we score. He blamed the lack of possession in the main and not enough ground play. Some might blame the shite team selection which may have some merit.

Although it was a good game and we did play well, we did not play better than boro, sorry DV.  They control a lot of the first half and most of the 2nd half until we scored.  Having said that they didn't create too many chances.

1st goal was quality, last goal was ellovastrike and the own goal should have been pulled back for hand ball.

Good entertaining game though with both sides having a go.

they had more possesion but all they did was hoof it forward to Mackrel-Smith and they didnt create anything. I dont remember Smith having to make a save. He played more as sweeper than as a goal keeper.

Title: Re: Official Swindon v Posh matchday thread

Been back a few minutes. The game felt like a loss, so i'm a little bit angry at the moment. Peterborough absolutey bossed the game, and until Byrne put Nalis on, the game was very one sided. As one sided as the play may have been though, they far from peppered the goal. They merely owned the midfield.

The reality is that them scoring when they did sucks, but nothing could have been done about that strike, well, you could play 2 rows of 4 centre backs tightly marking and hard tackling all over the pitch, but then you'd never score. It was a wonder goal regardless and although we were starting to get more of a foothold on the game, prior to scoring, didn't often look like doing so and the goal we scored was dubious, judging by the Posh players' reactions anyway.

At times i thought they'd give us a hiding, but we coped well with their constant pressure and i'll take a 2-2, because the levels of luck they had all over the pitch were always going to be difficult to battle against. Oh well, not the end of the world, an ok game of footy, which i did enjoy, thanks to 2 jackets 4 jumpers, 2 t-shirts, a vest and a balaclava.

Could be worse Bart, we could have appointed Allen (one of the many you reckoned would fall into "got to be better than Malpas" envelope IIRC).

Gone to Cheltenham on a months loan- Reckon Allen will have them firing up the league in no time

Do not see anyone disagreeing though. With some decent signings and Allen joining they will be mid table in no time

For once I agree with DV in a way. Peterboro' kept the ball well, we didn't, but on the whole I though we looked more likely to score.

At least the  goals against us were of quality. Ye the possible hand ball was missed but the ball in was superb. McGovern didn't have much chance. And whilst Nalis shouldn't have given away the throw in the second goal was quality.

Our first goal was excellent too, but I though the second was offside. Maybe it went to Cox from a defender?

I was a little disappointed with our 3 P's tonight, Paynter, Pook and Peacock - though the latter did a little better up front.

Frustrating to have been close to a win again, but it's not a bad result. We need a few wins though!

Draw seemed a fair result tonight for me.  We had a couple of good chances and they bossed the midfield.  Peacock and Pook were cumbersome, gave them too much room and generally looked frightened to get on the ball, probably a game for someone like Nalis to start on reflection because it wasn't really a battling midfield they had.

Paynter looked well off the pace as well.

Our 2nd goal will be worth watching again.  I can sympathise with their reaction because I failed to celebrate at first, assuming the linseman was about to put the flag up.

Thought J Smith had a blinder until he allowed himself to be easily turned for their 2nd goal, but even after that you still can't do an awful lot about the strike.  9 times out of 10 it goes wide or over or at the keeper.

Thought their front 2 looked good, which is no suprise, but they didn't release them enough.

Dissapointed we resorted to hoofing. Had we kept up our passing game we would have won that, Peterborough were pretty terrible considering they're 5th in the league. Second half we were pretty crap as well so overall a point was pretty fair.

Paynter's worst performance so far this season as well.

Title: Re: Official Swindon v Posh matchday thread
Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 22:41:18
An average game of football with the right result. I don't think we showed enough to win tonight but I didn't think Peterborough were that great if i'm being honest. They pressed well and we sat very deep especially in the second half. That was probably why the game seemed a bit lifeless at times.

Peacock and Paynter were poor tonight. Their first touches and passes were bog standard for them. I was very impressed with JPM. Probably our hardest working player tonight and my pick for MOTM. Maybe the OG (which he couldn't really help) spurred him on a little? He did look handu before that though. Back 4 was a lot more solid and Cox was OK abelt not amazing.

Thought we were going to nick it at the end but what can you do about a wonder goal? Typical of us at the moment really. Still, 2-2 for my prediction on Saturday me thinks.

Agree with all the points - I thought i saw two stunning goals tonight in our well worked first goal and their second, no keeper could of stopped that!

I did think that Cox was offside and i wouldnt mind seeing it again.

Midfield for town seemed weak tonight and as much as i love him Peacks was shit and constantly gave the ball away and was followed by Pook who despite his recent games looked like his old self, i hope they start playing better again.

Paynter was poor and his usual game of holding the ball up was missing and he didnt seem able to put his foot on the ball.

Cox ran around but went to ground far too easily tonight and i feel the ref got pissed off in the end and gave him nothing.

Defence was the usual panic stations especially when we were 2-1 up.

Timlin played well and seems to be making the position his own.

Smith didnt flap too much and made a couple of brave saves but didnt get near that super strike from Batt (who could).

I thought you could see how Peterborough are near the top as they played quick slick football but without much penetration.  They didnt deserve to win it and we didnt deserve to lose!

Roll on Walsall - i have a good feeling about it!!

Rob's words of wisdom sum it up for me. We looked disinterested, central midfield two not as commanding in recent weeks and continually looking for a long ball that wasn't there. Pook was utter tripe tonight compared to his last few performances, but Nalis looked equally as poor when he came on.

Paynter looked shattered, would have liked to have seen joyce really.

Back four looked ok - kanyuka keeps letting the ball drop , which makes me nervous. Stong in the air though, Hasney likewise. Smith played well, bit slow to react for their second but a great strike. Brez might have reached it but like Rich P said, 9 times out of 10 they hit the stratton bank. Still, feel slightly miffed that they scored with pretty much the two shots they had.

no Ifil baffled me, given their quick attack. And why no easton?

I thought tonight highlighted byrne's limitations. Passion is one thing, tactical nous is another and Posh were there for the taking...

I left five minutes early so in my eyes that was a good 2-1 win 8)

Peacock was shit. Pook was ok, not as good as he has been recently. would like to see him and easton line up together, especially if easton can re-discover his form from last season.

MC Govern had his best game i've seen from him for a long long time. heres hoping he can keep it up, as my mate said he was ace saturday too. Phil smith looked a little dodgy at times, never look totally confident with him in t'nets.

Our first goal was pure skill. One of the best team goals i have ever ever seen. After that though we were second best if anything. They always looked dangerous going forward, and when we got the ball we were clueless most of the time. Paynter was wank, but i think peterbrough figured out both our strikers fairly early on, and we didnt really adapt to it.

On the face of it another point against a play-off pushing team isnt the end of the world, but i would rather see a new manager in a lot sooner rather than later. ANd through sheer laziness on my part, could someone tell me why morrison and corr were both left out. Ta xx

Very poor game tonight, just makes we wonder why teams like Peterboro are so far up the league, not sure if they were sucked into our level or not, but they were definitely hoof ball.
I'm very worried about our caretakers managers decisions at present - Paynter was not having the greatest game this season but why take him off, we are at home ffs, go out and win the fucker, not try to protect a slender league, memories of Bristol come straight to to mind?
To me it was obvious that Peacock was not fit, totally unable to even challenge for the ball, not only that he was total shyte.
Pook had a great first half and along with Timlin I thought they stood out.
Cox seemed to lose complete interest with the game until he scored.
Smith in goal, he scares the life out of me - is he scared of crosses, maybe a vampire.
I wasn't that good when I played but I'm sure I could keep Kanyuka out of any side, he seems to have a five second delay before he acts.

Well off to Walsall on Saturday and looking forward to only my second away game of the season, 2-2 seems a fair bet.

What has happened to Corr?
Why didn't we put another forward on?
We are 1 point off relegation ....

Time for bed methinks.

Paynter was not having the greatest game this season but why take him off,

What has happened to Corr?

Why didn't we put another forward on?

We are 1 point off relegation ....

Because last night he was even less effective than Peacock was up front. The midfield was struggling so Nalis could have replace Peacock or Pook - but I think it was the right call as Paynter was having one of those games and was a passenger.

Corr has a slight calf strain - not worth risking,

We could have gone for it, but we were 2-1 up and looking like we would hold on. With hindsight maybe we could have had another striker, but I don't think the situation warranted it at the time.

1 point off relagation - the price for 4 draws in a row. The worry is that this is a good unbeaten spell for us but we aren't climbing the league. If we now lose a couple we are really in it. That said I am quite calm at this stage.

Can't see any criticism of McNamee. I thought he contributed very little all night, and wouldn't have agrued if he had been subbed for Joyce.

He's failed to kick on from the start of the season for me, definitely a luxury player. On last nght's performance I'd pick JP as our wide man instead, how times change !

We've got an important run of games against sides not so high in the table - vital that we pick up some wins against those around us.

Yes he was shit. Actually Byrne mentioned he was a frustrating player, but one that can win you games in the blink of an eye. #Which is why he was left on I suppose.

Has he lost his pre season form, is he being marked too well, or are we not getting the ball to him?

I haven't read most of this thread so forgive me if it's already been discussed, but I'm not having any of this "oh well, it was a last-minute wondergoal" stuff.

1. J. Smith should've closed the player down and never let him get a shot away from such a ridiculous position.
2. P. Smith shouldn't have been caught so far off his line...again.

Both points are true, but come on - how many shots are attempted from that position and how many of those hit the target? I think you are being a bit harsh on the Smiths.

Think I was at a different game from a lot of you...

Cox was pants all night. He was blowing out of his arse after 5 minutes and spent more time arguing with the officials than running back on side, most disappointing game I've seen him play.

Jack Smith- Looked like he was playing in slow motion for most of the game.

Peacock - absolute shite.

Aljorfree & Kanyuka - Shit me up everytime someone ran at them (Although, tbf, it's the same whoever we play in central defence).

Nalis - If we're losing the game in midfield, why bring the bloke on? We needed a ball winner, not a luxury central midfielder.

Macca - when he was given the ball, to his feet, he did ok. He relies on service.

P.Smith - Why he gets the amount of critiscism he does baffles me. I defy anyone who saw Brez flap around at Histon convince me he should be in goal.

Paynter - Needs a rest. Looked fucked from the start.

Pook - The best centre midfielder we had on the pitch. How scary is that?

Timlin - Did his best. Full of running and commitment. Deserved MOTM and should be captain.

JP - One of the only good things in an otherwise very lacklustre game.

True, but 9 times out of 10 shots like that don't even get close to the back of the net. It was a complete fluke.

I wouldn't blame P.Smith for their 2nd, but i do think J.Smith should have got to his man and snuffed out the danger.

MacNamee was very poor. Even when he did get the ball he failed to pass his man or get a cross in of any quality. And it's becoming a regular occurrence...

I never thought Id hear the day that Herthab says Pook is the best central midfielder we had ... but It was of course true ..

My overall opinion was that the sooner we get a new manager in the better - 3 points out of 9 under Byrne (2 of the games at home!) is going to get us relegated!

Don't misquote me.

I said Pook was the best central midfielder on the pitch last night.

Given that the other two were Peacock (Shite) and Nalis (Slow and shite) it's pretty faint praise.

(That said, he has been quite good in the last few games)

Another way to look at it is 3 games unbeaten and something to build on.

I'm not sure what the answer is for whoever is ultimately manager. Obviously conceded less goals. But how. I don't know what else is left to try in that department.

Thought it was a shit game, where the biggest surprise was there was 4 goals from very few chances.

McGovern, whillst hardly being ace, at least contributed some decent balls last night.  his ball to J smith was probably the best pass i've seen from a town player this season.

Our central mid was terrible last night. pook seems to be slipping back to his old ways, and peacock was no better.

Cox was offside, but the deflection came off a Peterborough player, no?

One good goal and one dodgy goal apiece tonight.

I'm was straight in line with the second goal.

When the original shot came in Cox was level, therefore onside.

When the shot was blocked and deflected to Cox, yes he was ahead of the Boro defender but CANNOT be offside because the final touch was by the Peterborough player.

So therefore the Peterborough players just do not know the rules of the game they play !!!

Good ol' Aunty Beeb...

Quote
Shaun Batt's last-minute wonder strike earned Peterborough a draw at Swindon and extended their unbeaten league run to 13 games.

Swindon went ahead after 10 minutes through Jack Smith's smart finish.

Posh were quickly level when Jon-Paul McGovern deflected George Boyd's cross into his own net, but Simon Smith put Swindon back in front after 81 minutes.

As Swindon scented victory, Batt took a ball from keeper Joe Lewis and sent a right-foot volley past Phil Smith.

It wasn't a great game but I can see why Boro are up there. It really is a crap division this year but Boro have pace aplenty up front. Their keeper absolutely dominated his box and showed Smith / Brez how it should be done.
I didn't think I'd say this but thought JPM was MOM. Put in some great balls and his free kick in the 2nd nearly caught their keeper out. Macnamee is really lacking confidence. Peacock and Pook didn't work but it has so far.
Has Kanyuka actually headed the ball so far with his forehead. It seems to come off everwhere else on his head - just not his forehead.

I think that by the standard he's set himself recently, Timlin had a poor game. That's still quite harsh. Thought Jack Smith was decent, dying to see his goal again as it looked good from the TE, so probably looks even better when you can see it properly! Will be interesting to see their second too, if he could've done more.

And Nalis is a donkey (no offence, Donkey!). I don't tend to single players out for criticism but the bloke is a waste of space. Terrible piece of control, putting th ball out on the halway line, and then they scored :|.

No, it was toward the end of the 1st half when Cox sort of sliced a ball back to Smith which made it look like he pulled out of a tackle (Which he didn't).  As Cox was running past us he shouted out "Cox your a fooking Chicken".

What a Muppet!

Disappointed at the end result, but a point gained and I thought we got lucky a few times.

Central defence looked a lot sturdier than it has done. Kanyuka miscontrolled a few times but Aljofree had a decent game imo.

Central midfield was outclassed. In fact the whole midfield struggled, Posh seemed to close down their man very well. McGovern had a good game - didn't drift inside that often and chased down a lot. Also put in some good tackle. An unfortunate own goal meant he didn't get man of the match in my opinion.

Paynter really had a bad game which surprised me. Cox did his job and managed to score, you could tell he was shattered towards the end.

What I'd say about the goal - we sat back far too deep for the entire second half. We invited the pressure on to ourselves and that cracking goal was not the only shot they managed to get from distance. Posh also seemed to win every second ball, much to my annoyance.

I was equally annoyed to see the return of the Strictly Come corner routine. Dancing on the penalty spot is not only ridiculous, but putting the corner to the far post where nobody is, is even more criminal.

Overall I'm happy with the point, but I think we need a new manager who will make us more solid and difficult to break down, especially at home.

Pass of the season from McGovern for the first.

At the time I didnt think there was much Smiffy could have done about their 2nd, but his positioning does seem a bit poor given how low the ball actually is by the time it cosses the line

Thanks, I know the rules ;)

Like I said its hard to judge from the footage, but neither cox or the defender nearest him appear to have moved by the time they come into shot - i think he was offside when pook shot. the fact it riccochets of their defender does not make any difference in this case.
