Title: Hereford V Swindon Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 13:34:36
Can't believe no one's done one of these yet, is there really that little interest in it?

Who else is going along tonight? Anyone going to that classy pub? If so, see you there!

I was going to Darlington vs. Huddersfield tonight, but the bad weather and my laziness won. So it's a quiet night in.

MM is serious about this JPT milarky and it could be his saving grace.

Brighton & Hove Albion v Leyton Orient
Cheltenham Town v Walsall
Gillingham v Colchester United
Hereford United v Swindon Town
Luton Town v Brentford
Franchise v AFC Bournemouth
Peterborough United v Dagenham & Redbridge (19:00)
Wycombe Wanderers v Shrewsbury Town (19:00)

I firmly believe that any team in our group can get to the final if they want to.

will you get me a special Bendy straw from the special pub?

I am ill - my boss just made me drink a glass of Beroca then I read heat magazine had a sleep on the sofa for an hour and he wrapped me in a table cloth

I think we might scrap through tonight like 1 nil

If you tell me which one I might. And if I get away from Brizzle in time. And if I can find it. So, erm, probably not.

Given your track record of getting to away games you'll be lucky to get there for half time.

You are when you go in goal for 10 minutes sometime between 8:30 and 9:30.

What a badass :D

I'll be using TEF for updates... It's more fun finding out the scores with "YEEEEEEEEEEEES 1-0 Cox - Malpas out!" or "Shit 0-1 Malpas out!" comments than actual radio commentary.

That's a bit harsh. It was only the Chester game I actually missed half time. We were at Barnet with, ooh, seconds to spare. And I got to Nam this season with enough time spare to buy chips and everything. I've set myself now haven't I? I'll be lucky to get there before the final whistle

Yes, although I'm not going, I care about a possible day out to Wembley - as I'll only go to Wembley if Town get there, or if Scotland play there.

Do we really care about the Mickey Mouse cup though ?

It's what every fan in tier 3 and 4 asks until they're chanting at Wembley Stadium.

Winning this Mickey Mouse trophy would lift this club especially it's fans.

A final place would be magic....this is as important as any league game IMO,it shows what character we have in the team and also gives MM the chance to look at Smiths reaction before sats match which is a must win game......also any match ware Cox can continue banging in the goals is going to do wonders for his confidence...it would be good to have the lgs top scorer on our books.

Title: Re: Hereford V Swindon Matchday Thread.
Post by: janaage on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 15:38:19
MM deserves credit here too, as too many of our previous managers treated this competition with a certain amount of aloofness.  MM playing a strong team is great, hopefully Hereford don't have the same view and will put out a below strength team - not that we can;t beat their first team, just that it'd be good to get an easier ride.

I was going to go, but the thought of driving to Hereford in mid-afternoon was frankly so unappealing it made me ill. I did some work instead (and might even do a bit more! :o ). Will try and get reception for RS or RW, but doesn't often happen in Bath :( .

....this is as important as any league game IMO,

I agree, because we are taking it seriously and going for it this year.

I think we'll win, but the pressure is mounting. Can you imagine what Saturday will be like if we go out of the 'Mickey Mouse' cup with our first team on duty.  That's what makes it important.

Sad to say I know of some so-called Town fans who genuinely want us to lose tonight (and Saturday).

Can't understand that mentality at all. If you don't want to support your own side then why bother?

Yes I do.  A win tonight and on Saturday will quieten it down. Maybe that will buy Malpas some time to turn it around, assuming he can.

Title: Re: Hereford V Swindon Matchday Thread.
Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 16:31:31
You're absolutely right Michael. If people think Malpas is going to make use rot that bad that we have to lose more games to get them out then they are silly. We're not going to be chasing promotion this season and we never were. If Malpas can stabilize and then build us to a team slightly better than last year then it's progress. At the moment there isn't progress which is the reason I am disappointed with everything.

I'd bloody love it if we won tonight and Saturday. Or at least turn out a very good performance in those games. At the moment I am not convinced by Malpas and think getting rid may make us better in the long run, but if he was to turn it around and get some better performances and results out of the team I'd be more than happy for him to stay.

I'll go into every game wanting a win rather than wanting Malpas out. My disappointment in Malpas is directly driven by the performances and results, not my dislike of the man (I don't dislike him for anything other than how the team is doing).

Swindon Town: Peter Brezovan; Kevin Amankwaah, Jerel Ifil, Sean Morrison, Jack Smith; Craig Easton (Capt), Lilian Nalis, Lee Peacock, Michael Timlin; Simon Cox, Billy Paynter

Substitutes: Phil Smith, Yinka Casal, Jon-Paul McGovern, Anthony McNamee, Barry Corr

Will that win me points in the Prediction league?

A distinguished former International goalkeeper himself, John Granville won almost every domestic trophy in his native Trinidad with ASL Sports a stint with the Los Angeles Aztecs, who also included the likes of Johan Cruyff and the late George Best amongst their ranks.

Successful playing spells in England followed with stints at Aldershot Town, Millwall and Wycombe Wanderers.

An FA Trophy final appearance against Kidderminster Harriers in May 1991 in front of 25,000 saw Granville play the game with a broken thumb. The Chairboys went on to win 2-1 with former Town striker Keith Scott also in the line-up.

Rejoined one of his former clubs as goalkeeping coach at Wycombe Wanderers where he replaced Northampton-bound Jim Barron.

Joined Swindon in July 2007, following in the footsteps of the likes of Andy Beasley and Fraser Digby in coaching the keepers at The County Ground.

BTW I'd like to suggest we adapt Kings of Leon's song 'Sex on Fire' for Cox. Perhaps "Heeeeey-ho, our Cox is on fiiiire!", you know, simple and different.

i am liking that the King of leon new song is peak.

The vidiprinter is a classic example of progress being shit...the teleprinter, being that much slower gave you just that bit longer to savour the tension of awaiting an away result....if it appeared say......Port Vale 0.....then you knew at least a point was in the bag,  worth enjoying for itself...but it offered up the distinct prospect of an away win...here it comes...Swindon Town 0  :(

A spell out of the team seems to have done Peacock a bit of good!

Good win, I think it's really important that despite going a goal down, we came back to win instead of folding as we have done previously.

I know it's not a great competition but it might be just the ticket to get some passion into the team (and the fans).

just got back, that was fun.

totally controlled the second half - hereford didn't get a sniff after the break. Good finish by cox, although the shot took an age to get in. Peacock battled away again and was rewarded. Amankwaah got forward a lot but a lack of wingers made us look like we lacked real attacking threat. Ifil and morrisson did well at the back, and some of jerel's passes even made it to our players.

roll on the QFs.

oh, and the ref was shiiiiiiiit.

Good night. First half was a bit meh, both sides failing to impress.

2nd half it was all us, we played some nice football, kept the ball well and looked quite solid.

Peacock has completely won me over, I used to think he was a headless chicken, but after seeing our performances without him, compared to when he's in the side, I've come to the conclusion that the bloke's immense, he never stops running, tackling, breaking up play and his goal was well deserved. He is definitely best at midfield though.

There'll be those who belittle this result, either because it's the JPT, or because it was against Hereford, but I really think we could've turned a corner last night. There seemed to be more team spirit and determination than of recent games and a win can only inspire confidence.

Just hope the crowd on Saturday give them a chance.

A win is a win and let's hoep that this could be a turning point in the season, unfortunetly I'm not so sure, Saturday is really crucial now, we must get a win no if's no but's.

Listening to MM interview he was blaming the press for putting out negative messages and telling them ti was down to them to put out some positive messages to the fan's - errr sorry but if you are not winning or you concede 3 from being 3 up then what positives can be taken - win a few games and get some consistency in the team and all the negativity will dissapear with everyone backing a winning team and a manager that has proved he can turn it around.

It was a good result last night, I think someone mentioned it already in this thread, but isnt our away record pretty good this year? Only lost away at Cheltenham?

Perhaps it's because the Hartlepool game felt like a defeat....

So Smith gets the vote of confidence and dropped all in one day. Impressive.
Hmm, that was my thought when I spotted the keeper looking distinctly Brez-shaped but as rbe pointed out, actually it may have been a clever bit of pre-game gamesmanship by MM. Leak to the Adver (and JPC) and other well-known sources that you're sticking with Smith, Turner tells his team "Right lads, they've got a keeper low on confidence so just pepper him with balls, force the error" then out they go and it's "Ooh, hang on who's this bloke?". All of a sudden it's Hereford who are feeling ill-prepared and on the back foot. Erm, it was a lot more convincing when rbe explained it to me last night. And tbh, difficult to find any other reason for the Phil Smith Hokey Cokey.

Oh, and Sam, I was in the ground for kick-off, thank you very much. O ye of little faith.

Postives to be taken from Hartlepool

* Cox getting a hat trick
* Transforming the team from the shambles v Millwall to being 3-0 up after 52 mins away
* Looking in control until PS' error gave Hpl a life line

I agree with MM, we possibly do need a bit of help from the Adver to try and focus on the positives get the good vibes back at the CG.  Doom and gloom just breeds stress and unhappiness, as Graham Taylor said "if my players had a face like yours (Rob) they'd be out the door, now put a smile on your face...".

We are not a the doomsday scenario that some would lead us to believe we are, it's so early in the season, yeah we're looking ropey at the back but that can be fixed.  The team's away form should be enough for the fans to give them a little slack when it comes to home matches, but at the minute it seems I'm in the minority on that point.

Unbeaten away since 16 Aug - that's quite impressive!

Maybe Malpas has finally discovered what we already knew........Peacock is better in midfield than up front..........

Fantastic gesture to the lad and his grieving family, restores some of my faith and respect in pro footballers.

Peacock for captain.

I do, I'm a season ticket holder..... and I've paid my second installment!!!

Aha! I see now. Last night we discovered your effect on away games, so I have a cunning plan. This Saturday instead of going to the ground, as you reach the street outside your front door locate the nearest manhole cover. Lift it carefully and then descend into the chamber remembering to close the lid behind you. You may take a wi-fi laptop with you to keep in touch with the matchday thread (but a portable radio is a definite no no) and possibly a flask of Bovril. If, as I suspect, we defeat Udders we will then know for sure the cause of our paltry home form.

If this works I'm sure we would all chip in to make the sewer or whatever a more comfortable place for you.

Is it at all possible to create a song or even use a song that isn't used by the likes of Man Utd and Liverpool?

In fairness, probably not.

As i went to the game think i may as well give my opinion on the nights fun.Thought we were the better side, although Hereford were pretty dire, especially in the second half.Have to admit that i thought it was going to be another one of those games where we play alright and don't get the result. But we did,and when we scored i was beyond chuffed. But then considering i haven't seen us win since Aldershot away[and that doesn't really count] its not too surprising i was so happy about it  ;D

Jerel looked great.Seemed as if he was winning every tackle and was full of confidence, just like the normal Jerel.I'm hopeful Aljofree will stay ill.

Brilliant to see Peacock playing in midfield.Taken to long for it to happen in all honesty and you have to wonder if it will continue. But what he maybe lacks in natural midfield ability he more than makes up for with his desire to win every game when he's got a town shirt on.Got to love the bloke

All in all was a good night.Certainly worth not getting to bed before 11.30 for.Only sore point[aside from Brezovan's cock up] was fucking Byrne at the end, coming over torwards the stand and giving us the thumbs up for fucks sake.Pissed me right off cause i wanted to applaude the players not him, what a cock he is.

I only listened on the radio but there were a few times that you could hear the difference when Ed Hadwin would say something about Peacock kneeing it away, blocking or just getting in the way. He didn't say it about anyone else (until Corr came on later on) but having watched the 'Pools goals again at least one goal was down to players not just getting something, anything in the way.

As someone else said on another thread I too had watched Peacock this season and thought that this looked a year too far for him. But it is nice to be wrong. Again.

I suppose he cant win........i think that all playing staff AND officials should applaud away support win, lose or draw....so i dont think he did much wrong.

Given how heavily it was being leaked all over the press yesterday that Smith was definitely the keeper, looks like a deliberate attempt to wrongfoot Hereford through all the usual leaky sources, including the players. Maybe Malpas is smarter than your mates give him credit for?

No one likes us

We are moaning
Always moaning
We are moaning
Malpas out.

Not sure about the last few lines though.
