I think they're starting with  a small number then planning to build up the number of home players teams must register.

Would Arsenal be struggling to make 4?

They've got Cole, Hoyte, Campbell...

In a 25 man squad?

Cole, Campbell, Taylor, Hoyte, Pennant. All I can think of so yes, probably.

Why would it be a mistake?

Both Taylor and Pennant may have left by the time next season comes around.

Just looked at it again - it says club-trained players (has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21), so rather than giving young English players opportunities won't the big clubs just bring in more talented youngsters from abroad?

The old chestnut which will doubtless rear its ugly head here, is that Ulstermen Sweaties and Welsh get regarded as foreign by UEFA.....so in our side for example Duke Grant Smith Roberts and Jenkins are considered as foreign as Miglioranzi and Fallon.

What the hell is a homegrown player anyway?

Four in 25 is a piece of piss.  How many of those four are going to be required to play?

If anything if homegrown is simply defined by a player coming through the club's academy then it encourages the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United to pilfer even younger players from poorer clubs.

Sounds like it goes against all sorts of employment laws so it will only take one club to take it a step further and it will come all crashing down.

Of the 32 sides in last season's Champions League, five clubs would have not had enough homegrown players.

They are: Arsenal, Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers and Ajax.

That suprised me Ive always thought of Ajax as a club that develops young  players.

Who's the daddy?

Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein says Uefa's new ruling on homegrown players could be challenged legally.
Uefa has told clubs they must have four homegrown players in their squad by 2006 to enter European competitions.

But Dein fears the quality of the Premiership will suffer under the new ruling and also believes it "restricts the free movement of workers".

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's misguided and it will almost certainly now be challenged."

At a January meeting, Dein said the Premier League had unanimously opposed the Uefa ruling.

"Few Premier League squads would meet Uefa's current proposals and we think the quality of our league would suffer," he said.

"We probably have the most successful league in the world and we tamper with it at our peril.

"Although it has been proposed for Uefa competitions, there is a danger it could eventually be introduced to to all levels.

"We don't think they can do that."

Arsenal are one of five clubs from last season's Champions League who would not have had enough homegrown players in their squad under the new ruling.

The others are Chelsea, Celtic, Rangers and Ajax

Me and Davey Dean that's who!

Arsenal: Cole, Campbell, Hoyte...

Now Pennant's out on loan. No, surely Arsenal won't have to actually buy an English player!!!
Wenger will probably decide its not worth it and just move the whole club to France.

Henry, Pires, Vieira, Cygan, Alliadiere(?) and many youger ones.

Celtic and Ranger's current squads are a disgrace.

So long as Welsh, Scottish and NI players are considered home grown at English clubs then Im all for it.

Certainly something needs to be done. Its too easy to buy success at the moment.

Ajax is an interesting one. Whereas in the past they developed Dutch talent and players from former Dutch colonies now they seem to scout Europe wide. Theres been a few 16 yr old Romanians come out of Ajax.

As far as I can see Fabregas and Aliadiere and numerous others are thought of as home-grown under this.

More home grown players I reckon, then maybe we might have a better England team.

Yeah, that's right. Foreign players can be 'home grown.'
