Title: Tips please, people!
Post by: Sade on Thursday, February 16, 2006, 20:55:29
Right, I am at wits end with job hunting  :(
I have had enough. Since October I have had more than 10 interviews, mostly in the administration department. I try and go for the trainee jobs, but havent found much. I suppose my lack of experience and young, tender age let me down  :(

Anyway I have an interview tomorrow morning, and I see this as my last shot. If I don't get the job I am just going to go for any old job and I don't care what it is (Nobody tell me to go back to college as that really does not appeal to me. Once a week or once a month would be ok though).

So does anybody have any tips for me and my interview?  :D

It would be much appreciated, Fank yooooou.
(and yes I am fairly fussy)

Hard to say really as we're all different in interviews/get nervous etc.

But just be yourself, make sure you know about the company where you're going for the interview. And I always write down some questions to ask, as whenever they come to that bit at the end I can never remember what  I was going to ask and if they've already answered it, they won't mind you doing that, it shows you're keen!

And don't waffle (not saying you do, just don't do it). And make yourself sound really good and keen etc.

Good luck.

Why don't you do an apprentiship? (sp) 4 days working, 1 day college per week

You've been looking since October and you're still jobless!, oh dear young lady.

Enthusiasm is the key. Be enthusiastic about the most mundane of tasks asked of/ suggested to you and you will inspire all of those around you.

If all else fails - media sales!

Yeh I was thinking of doing that. Sounds like a good balance, I have an appointment with a woman from connections next week so I may ask her about that.

:(  I just want a nice job that I can enjoy.

Heaven forbid Mark! :D

Sade, make sure you do some research on the company beforehand, ie: on the net tonight. Just be yourself, as a lot of interviewers can be just as nervous as you will be (I know I was the first few times I interviewed people), and as Bedford said, prepare some questions for them as they will no doubt ask at the end.

The main thing to remember is they're not there to trip you up or catch you out, they just want the right person for the job.

Good luck.

Thanks for the useful advice guys, its all been stored in my noodle  8)
I think I just need to be a bit more confident.
(I lied about the bit saying I would probably give up if I don't get this job    I was a bit cheesed off earlier)

Dan I would be a rubbish nurse. I am such a wimp.

I expect its a lady interviewing me too.

I found out that the last interview I went to, the bloke picked the blonde girl  :x
Typical.

Read the job description look at exactly what they want and apply that to an example or situation that demonstrates you meet that skill.  Emphasize, make bits up or make it all up if you can’t think of anything.

The trick is to literally look at the advert/job description as a check list and make sure you meet the requirements at every point and in some cases meet the standard above and beyond the necessary.  But don’t go overboard!

Practise the sort of questions you’re going to get asked (you must be used to them by now   :o ) and answer out loud.  Get yourself to that stage where there’s no umms, arrs or errs in your responses.

Few golden nuggets that have always served me well…

-   Always ask for a glass of water.  Use it to sip when you need to think of an answer to buy some time and it’ll help slow you down a gear if you have a tendency to race off on one and start to babble.
-   “I am an excellent team player.  I can fit into different roles within a team as required by using my initiative to lead and at other times fulfilling the supporting role within a group.  I also work well as an individual under my own motivation …”  Alright it’s shit but every personnel officer every job interviewer still wants to hear it from minimum wage to director level it’s always there so make sure you get it in.
-   Think of your weak/bad point that’s really an ‘opportunity’ to make you look good.  I can’t believe they are still using this question but it still fucking crops up.  Make sure you have something decent and half original lined up.
-   Body language.  Don’t go overboard but smile in the right places, tinker with your seat until you are comfortable at the start of the interview and again eye contact and plenty of gentle nodding when they talk to you.
-   Ambition.  Again don’t go overboard with this one but always come across as keen and eager to progress and make sure you ask what career opportunities there are.  When they ask you where would you like to be in X years always aim high and say something like you don’t have a specific career path mapped out but you would like to progress eventually into management.
- Questions. Fucking ask loads of them.  Opportunities, training, benefits, career moves, job specifics.  The more you ask the better and the more you ask questions from the perspective of the job holder the more they will visualise you in the role.

Finally walk in knowing YOU are going to get that job.  In fact go in thinking that you are doing them a favour by applying for their job.  Fact is they are they need you more than they need you.

:D  I like being Brunette thanks.

Anyway some great advice people, thank you ever so much. I took it all into account.

My interview went really really well  :)  I feel rather positive.

SHE said I had really nice hand writing from the letter I sent to her and she was impressed that since leaving school I decided to go straight into work, rather than what most kids do and thats go and doss at college (not all kids, no offence college people). She was really friendly and swore a few times which made me laugh! she told me that the office is mainly male populated so you have to deal with banter and pressure - Pressure? paaah  8)
She also said that most of the applicants she had she has tossed aside as they were not suitable, so that tells me I stand a good chance.

Also!! shes a bristol rovers fan, she told me when she spotted my bit about swindon in the interests bit in my CV. We talked about footy for a while which was cool...

Anyway I'm not going to get too carried away, because I might not get it. BUT its looking quite good.

Thanks again everyone.

I'll keep you updated  8)

:Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick: dont be so harsh ED! i went through a similar thing myself last year Sade. i work in Admin now but office work is really hard to get when you have no experience. if you look for temp work its easier to get a job becuase experience usually isnt as highl regarded. you only need 6 months then your off! best of luck!
