Title: Car question for Ralphy
Post by: Bob's Orange on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, 21:06:13
One of my friends from work drives a Pug 206cc and wants to put 18 inch alloy wheels on it. I told her that she'll probably need to fuck about with the arches but she says she'll just adjust the suspension and they'll fit.

What do you reckon?

I also have a problem:

Pulling away/using first gear feels very heavy, sluggish and slow to respond?

she could fit 18's but would probably need to roll the arches so that they fit and don't rub. don't quote me on that thought.
As for size 215/35/18 should be about right.
Also she would have to sort the suspension otherwise it will look like it's on stilts.

You can get 18's on a 206 but i wouldn't advise it.

Like magic said, the arches will need cutting and 215 is probally the widest you can go as far as tyres are concerced.

Don't just bang any old 18 inch wheel on though, tell her to find out what is the required size for the 206cc. For example, a 255/35/18 off a Ferrari 360 will be far to wide for a 206cc.

You have to keep the 'aspect ratio' as well when upgrading wheel sizes else the speedo will be miles out.

My car runs as standard on 205/45/17

If i wanted 18's i'd have to use 215/40/18

It's a wider tyre but offset by the smaller 'aspect ratio' of 40 instead of 45. This is the percentage of the width of the tyre.

My Uncle has a mark III golf convertible but with no alloys, if he puts them on he says they'll be bigger than the existing one's does this mess with the oddometer?

Like i said, you need to keep the 'aspect ratio' when putting a larger than standard wheel on.

Blackcurrant, for £3,000 i'd look at used Golfs.
