Post by: red macca on Friday, January 20, 2006, 13:01:11
just thinking .i remember towards the end of andy kings reign how he commented on christian roberts so called demons.i also recall at the time he was taking the piss out of roberts for this looking back at it now this could be the big reason we never saw the best out of him.i think and hope when roberts is back he plays like we know he can because i think the way iffy has handled this has been brilliant...

i love iffy :D

Just out of curiousity as I have no idea, how long does a proper rehabilitation program take and how long would it be until Roberts is back and fit enough to regain his place in the team? Is this season out of the question?

He'll be in the rehab for up to 28 days, then I guess he'll need some reserve games to regain match fitness. I wouldn't have thought March would be out of the question.

I do hope he could get a few games in before the end of the season.

I think he'll need it after the rehab ... if it works all he'll want to do is play, which is a damn good thing.

Yeah and it will be good in the way that it will show him that iffy still has confidence in him and the fans will get behind him too and show their support. It will benefit him. He's a great player when he is at his fittest. We all know that.

They were talking about the tail end of the season, it could be perfect, it'll be like having a new player signing if he's fully recovered.

I have no real idea about rehab, but I guess a large part of it is the indivdual's desire to suceed, coupled with the quality of the treatment.  I think sporting chance seems to be very sucessful, and Roberts looks like he was keen to beat it, from what he said it seemed like his kids were the motivation to sort himself out, and he knows the clock's ticking on his career.  I think a couple of months and they will have a good idea of how sucessful its all been.

The hardest part is admitting he had the problem so respect to him for doing something about it.  he seems determined so hopefully that will make a difference to how long it takes him to beat it.

Roberts wont back to the old Roberts (I mean the one we signed) till the start of next season, if he gets over his addiction and if he is still here.

Since the car crash Roberts has hardly played and has generally got bigger and bigger. Get over the addiction is one thing, getting him fit enough for 90 minutes of League One football is a completely different thing. I couldnt even tell you the last time Roberts played a full 90 minutes...let alone had a run of games

I wish him all the best, he'll come back and play towards the end of this season I expect but I dont think he'll be 100% match fit untill next season....if he is even here, is his contract up in June?

His contract is until the end of next season, was the only player we had under contract after the end of this year at one point.

I would have though if he proves himself fit for playing again he'd stay.  Partly because finding a new club after well publicised problems might be tricky, partly because his form has been indifferent (and who'd want him), and I guess he may feel some loyalty to the club if they've supported him through his problems.  I guess the club would like to see a return on the time invested in him too, so will offer him a contract probably subject to certain conditions.

Iffy has been a bit easy going on this, most managers would have got rid of the player, but he has handled it well and Roberts does want to turn it around.

As with any addiction, every case is different, but ballpark figures.. two weeks to 'dry out', then two weeks to 'adjust' (4 weeks rehab).

Then ongoing counselling to work through why/if you have an addictive personality, other issues etc.. And get to the root of the problem. Basically, digging up the crap in your life, whether it's from many years ago or something more recent. Not a nice experience!

This bit is done out of rehab, whilst getting back to a 'normal' way of life.

9 months in the case of my, er, mate :--

As I say, It's different for everyone, and Roberts has the added pressure of getting match fit afterwards.
