Title: 3G, upgrading phones and Vodafone contracts
Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, January 17, 2005, 19:27:23
I was in Swindon today so I popped into Vodafone to check out what phones are about as I desperately want to get rid of this shitty E710. Nothing really caught my eye except the Sony Ericsson V800 (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/12/review_sony_ericsson_v800/) and the Sharp 902 (http://www.mobilegazette.com/sharp-902.htm).

Does anybody have a 3G phone and if so is it any good? What's the network coverage like? Does it have any features that are useful over most phones?

Secondly, do I have any chance of getting the phone for nowt? Cheapest I could get the V800 is £170 on 3G and about the same if I went for Anytime 200 (I believe). It'd cost me a fucking bomb to upgrade with my current contract.

I don't really want another flip phone because they're gay, but these 3G ones seem lush.

Network coverage with a vodafone 3g phone is the same as a normal vodafone phone (IE 99% UK coverage). 3g coverage is currently at 60% outdoor coverage soon to be increased to 70%.

The sharp is awesome. Well nice camera.

how long have you had your e710 for? You wont get it for nothing unless your bills are really high. The Sharp is £170 on a new contract. You can do buy now pay later if you want.

I'm just approaching the ten month mark for my e710. I don't want to fork out for a new phone to be honest. Can I get the 6610i on contract?

I had a 6610 and it's the best phone I've ever had. Looking at the 6600 atm, that's free.

Sonic youth

Why don't you get one of these.  They are very fashionable, the camera quality is one of the best i've ever seen, you can download shed loads of mp3s and it comes with free accessories, car kit etc and you can go on Anytime 200 with 50 inclusive texts for £15 per month for 9 months!

If you want a 3g phone you'll have to pay so choose something else. they arent that exciting anyway really.

Although saying that you can get some decent 3g tariffs with free footy clips (not swindon though)

if they wont offer you the phone you want call 191 and go through to the disconections dept. Say orange have offered it to you for free and they probably will go for it.

decent affordable phones out at the mo are:

sharp gx25
sharp gx30
samsung d500
nokia 6230
sony eric s700i

The day of my 10th month is next Monday, spoke to some bloke with a cool beard today who gave me some quotes for next week.

3G doesn't even reach my backwards part of the world, I'd have to drive 10 miles to make a phone call so fuck that. Gonna have a look at the ones you listed, cheers Jimbo.

You'd still be able to make normal calls just not video calls. I wouldnt bother with it yet either.

ah right, then not much point in forking out for a phone that expensive if the novelty doesn't work.

I like the D500, S700i and 6320. I'll wailt until next week and phone 'em up or something.

I'm in a similar situation to Sonic. My phone is getting on a bit now and needs replacing. I'd prefer to get a phone on P.A.Y.G.  I know that they probably work out more expensive this way, but does anyone know the best place to get them? i.e Direct from the shop or from somewhere on t'internet

6230 is a nice phone.  I had a demo and the chap had one himself with a 1gig memory card stuffed full of MP3s, loads of features and the like.

Has to be a flip top for me every time though.  Sony before they merged with Ericsson created a couple of quality handsets the best being the yet to be beaten Z5.

Sadly my old Z5 was getting a bit battered so I invested in the new Sony 3G Z1010 and it's a pile of shite.  Like a house brick fortunately I made a tasty profit on it and have now purchased the supr cool Samsung E800.  Very compact a little light on special features but the camera is superb.

Dude I've got a 3 phone, it's shit, like Frank Sinatra I have a few regrets in life, not shagging a swiss bird on a beach in Oz is one, not going to Uni another, but my biggest regret in life is signing the 12 month 3 contract.  Unless you are in a well built up area you can't make voice calls without the person you're calling saying, mate you're breaking up.  Fucking crap.  Stick to Voda, O2, Orange.  That's my advice.

Gotta stick to Vodafone cos it's the only network that works here. I really like the look of the S700i, the D500 looks very snazzy and the 6230 looks user friendly whilst not looking as nice as the others. Hmmm, tough decision :|

D500 looks superb, bit pricey but not to bad on contract I suppose.

Exactly the problem i experiance with my mate who works on the road. At times its fucking impossible to have a conversation due to the wanky signal.

My advice: Avoid 3 like you would avoid AIDS

I might order my D500 later, if i can be arsed to give notice of canellation of my current contract

I just wrote a reply to that Pie face and it fucking disappeared, can't be arsed to retype it so in summary I confirmed that 3 is shit.

OK, looked around on the intarweb and found the D500 for £9.99 / £16.50pm and the S700i for £59.99 / £16.50pm from this (www.onestopphoneshop.com) little website.

Decisions decisions...

one of the best phones out at the moment is the Sony Ericsson s700i. Pure quality with video, MP3 player, 1.3mg pixal xamera etc.
Thing is O2 have taken them off there website cos something is wrong with the compatability between o2 and sony ericsson  .
Can get on Vodafone though.

Take a look on this:

I really like the look of the s700i but most people seem to plump for the D500, which would save me quite a bit of money. Tough decisions tbh.

bloke in o2 shop gave me a demo of the S700 the other day and it was the dogs.
not seen much of the D500. it looks a cool tiny phone though. They both do the same really it's just which one you like the look of the most.
Both are like flip phones without flipping :!:

I've got a k700i too. Great phone and does the job, I just get bored with the extras after a couple of weeks (camera/bluetooth etc...). If it looks good and you can text with it, thats all that counts for me  :)
