Club must be more realistic

SWINDON Town Football Club are still trying to pull the wool over our eyes regarding the regeneration of the County Ground site, pictured, and now they have the Adver shouting their praises too.

It would be good for the town if the stadium was a more modern design and offered the people of Swindon a first-class venue.

It would also be good if we had a decent theatre, or a decent library, or maybe an Olympic-sized swimming pool or a well looked after Mechanics' Institute. But they all have to be paid for and Swindon Council do not have surplus funds.

If they did, perhaps, our Social Services or Education Department would not score so low on Government targets.

So although it might be good to have a modern stadium we, the people of Swindon, cannot afford it.

The club and the Adver cite the benefit of new stadia to Reading, Hull and Swansea. New stadia did help these clubs to prosper but so did having directors with bigger pockets (Mr Wills excepted) than those of Swindon Town directors.

In order to pay for the redevelopment of the County Ground the club want land about four to five times the size of the current ground to build a bigger stadium with hotel and conference facilities.

The club want to build houses on the site, to sell, to realise a profit, to pay for their share of the redevelopment, but at no cost to them.

The club want the council to partner them somehow in this venture. The council are not allowed to give the club the land. Therefore they will have to be financially involved, with no guarantee of any return, using Swindon borough funds our money.

If the future prospects of STFC are so rosy that they can plan a £50m expansion then let them take their plans, their money (all borrowed) and move somewhere else.

Or put up with what they have, cut their cloth according to their income and status, and shut up.

'stadia' is a stupid word

Seconded, I find the letters page gives me the opportunity to vent my anger in a controlled way.  most of the letters are in no way news, too many are petty politics, just people sniping over rubbish 'facts'.

As for an olympic sized pool, this country's provision is rubbish, but there is only one planned in Wales, we have one in Bath, one in London.  Places like Bristol and birmingham, and much more regional centres than Swindon don't have one as far as I know.

In fact 90% of all letters in the adver are total and utter crap!

These people make me laugh, then cry.

Does the club really want to "build houses on the land at no cost to them"? No. They want to build a new ground there.
THAT IS THE PLAN ISN'T IT? or have i missed something?

They seem to miss the point of a joint venture which is mutually beneficial to the council and the club, and mores the point the town as a whole.

Erm, well, actually r4e you've missed the bit where they want to build houses on the land to fund the stadium the development.

I hate people that make judgements and open their mouths without knowing the facts. I read the letter in the adver this afternoon and my first reaction was what a complete twat. Try researching what you are going to mouth off about your fucking idiot.

Bit harsh, Yeovil. The reporting of the plans in local media etc has not been exactly clear so I don't think r4e is the only one who's not picked up all the details. There's me for one thing ....  :?

i read that letter, then got really mad, tried explaining why i was getting mad to my sister, but she told me to piss off.

Just what sisters are for.................

Someone write to the Adver with a cool calm and collective response to Mike Allenden's letter explaining that while he clearly has the taxpayer’s interest at heart it may be prudent to wait for details to be officially released before he cast judgement.

Explain that as it’s understood the council and club are working together to avoid precisely the scenario he outlined in his letter.  

Then stick a bit of nitty-gritty in about the development will not only generate vital first time buyers housing, bring much needed community facilities to the Town and will in fact not cost the council  penny and should actually provide them with a valuable asset that otherwise they wouldn’t’ have had.

The club has 100 years on this guy. Why the hell did he move there if he's worried about 'too many people coming to football'?

He'll probably dead by the time the thing get's built.

People like that make me the most angry out of all the shortsighted idiots out there.  Does he not remember the halcyon days of just a few years ago when at least double the current crowd went let alone eh 20,000 days of the past.  There is no on ein that area who has lived there longer than the CG has been there.  Idiots!!!
