I have one George Best story that always makes me smile.

He was in the states, Vegas I think. After winning $$$ he called room service. An English lad brings his champagne order to the room. On opening the door he sees George Best, a loads of cash, and a miss world waiting and says "Mr Best, where did it all go wrong?"

I think he said

"i spent all my money on women and drinking and i wasted the rest"

What a guy.....

Yeah he said ''I spent all my money on drink, women and fast cars. I squandered the rest''  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

Pele said George Best was the greatest player he ever saw play.

The epitomy of a flawed genius, like Garrincha, just think how good he'd have been if he'd had a full length career... Frighteningly good.

I'll refrain from my normall piss taking and outright abuse to say that he was one of the most gifted footballers of all time.

Mattboyslim is right to point out the similarities between him and Garrincha. watched a fascinating documentary on him.

First saw Best play in 64 , as part of the ManUre side that  we met over two legs in the FA Youth Cup final ....crowd of over 17000.

Don Rogers put us ahead but Best equalised.....I think he also played for Fulham at the CG in 77, when we beat them 3-0 in the FA Cup  in front of over 23000, but I ddin't go to the game.

Remember hearing a story of how fellas in Belfast would go to watch street football, because the word had gone around about this kid who could do great things with the ball.

just love seeing that clip of some goal he scored...

night game against some team in blue, he recieves a through ball, as he runs through someone crops him but he manages to stay on his feet as the keeper comes out another covering defender also makes his way back but best looking slightly impatient just glides past both of them with the slightest of touches without breaking stride and slots the ball in from 4 yards.

someone said to pele "you're the greatest player on the world" pele replied "no it's a northern irish man, george best, he's better"

Watching newnight last night they had a feature by some united fan, and they showed a goal best scored playing in the NASL, it was like maradona 86 but twice as many defenders, against higher calibre opposition it would have been hailed the finest dribbled goal ever.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Best's footballing ability. He lived up to his name on the pitch, surely the Best player to have ever come from Britain/Northen Ireland. Its very sad,but isn't a minutes silence tomorrow  a bit excessive? We didn't have a minutes silence on 11 November against the shitty, and that to my mind is more deserving of a silence than Best's sad demise.

The notion of the minutes silence has definately changed in the 15 years I've been watching Town.  In the past it was reserved for club officials/ex players of the teams in the match or national figures ie royal family.  Occasionally you'd get one for a football icon, ie old england captain etc, on this occassion I would say it's probably warranted, but from memory there are many times when it doesn't seem appropriate.

If I recall correctly it was 5:0, with Best hitting the woodwork early on when it was 0:0.  That was after a 3:3 draw at Craven Cottage, I think we were 3:1 up at one time.  Fulham couldn't deal with David Moss who caused havoc.  Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh were also in the Fulham team.  The game at Fulham was after Paddington Station had become a sea of red and white, with the roof raised by all the noise.  Happy Days.

RIP George Best, too young to have seen but clearly a footballing legend. Played only 6 times for Hibs but still regarged as a Hibs legend. Apparently he turned up to play for Hibs against Rangers and was blind drunk. He was still the best player on the pitch by a mile.

Thoughts with his Friends and family.

If there is somewhere after death, imagine Stanley Matthews and Besty dribbling around each other!

Genuine football legend.

I just loved to see him talk the game on TV. Always came across as genuine, wise and well worth listening to, especially on matters Man Utd. Top bloke, one of the best footballers ever.

Although i personally disapproved of his lifestyle, he seemed like a great footballing guy and a top bloke all round.

Bloke was a legend.

People forget that alchoholism is a disease. Some people can get over it and others can't. It's a shame that Best couldn't.
