Title: 24hr drinking.
Post by: Sippo on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, 10:34:47
Agree/Disagree?

Theres only three pubs in swindon applied for it. It doesn't bother me tbh. I think it'll reduce violence in town centre's, and won't encourage binge drinking. It will be good for shift workers because on their way home if they need some beer from thesupermarket, after a nightmare shift, they can get some.

I'm all in favour!

Good idea, it's not as though it'll be everywhere and sometimes it's nice to stay in the pub a bit later, often by about 10.30 you feel like they are closing up.  I think it'll be mostly hotels who can stay open and serve residents so will apply for the licence to serve the public too.

Bollocks - it won't reduce binge drinking - all that will happen is that more quantity will be drunk, the pubs make more money, the breweries make money and the government makes more money via taxes on alcohol.

It's all about money and nothing to do with tackling the problem

I heard a rumour that the swiss chalet had one, not too sure about the others. I know that Chavbah in town has an extended license.

What would be class is if everyone over the age of 18 went out on Thursday night, straight from work, then turned up for work the next day hammered, in the same clothing, pissed as George Best in 1971.

Just so, for once the do gooders and conservative press could be proven right for once.

What’s the implication for those that don’t apply, do they have a kicking out time they must still comply to?

Nowt will happen, most pubs will stay open until 12:30(ish) but people will either head home or head for clubs after that.

Nightclubs will turn out to be the losers there will no longer be a mass evacuation of punters at last orders desperate for more drink but more of a steady selective crowd of clubbers.

According to the land lord of our pub, every pub in England and Wales can now serve until 1am 7 days a week.  Also from tomorrow there is no 20 minute drinking up time, you just have to leave when the land lord asks you to.  Which is a bit of a bastard for me cos I'm gonna be knackered after working Sunday nights then getting up for my proper job on Monday morning.

I'm all for it, athough the chances of me walking up at 4.30 am and thinking"i fancy a pint" are nil.

It bmay well spell the end of nightclubs, most of them anyway.

The nightclub era died with the 90's. Either that or I'm an old cunt thses days.

Think you're probably right .......in a sense this has been going on for a while now.....quite a few of the pubs in Swindon have been open til 1 and 2 Thursday, Friday, Sat  for at least a couple of years now.

May well be the end of the traditional ‘nightclub’.

There’s bound to be a blurring between bars and clubs so they cater for more tastes and get the punters in early.

Title: 24hr drinking.
Post by: Luci on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, 12:57:17
At least clubs/pubs will be able to filter the drinkers out gradually than kick them straight out.  When last orders is called most buy as many drinks as they can, down them and get kicked out onto the street straight away where they cause trouble, start fights etc.  If they can stay in for as long as they like, the novelty may soon wear off so they will leave when they're ready in a good mood and not when they're forced to.

indeed. I'm been to 1 (count em!) nightclub this year (The Apartmant) and that was only because everyone else I was out with was going. (£5 to get in, the cunts)

There is no need anymore, with bars staying open late. clubs always pissed me off to an extent, stupid door charges and over the top drinks prices.

Agree with PM, the nightclub died with Diana, or at least around the same time as that anyway!

I hope the "poncey bar" dies next.  Bring back the local, the new improved 24 hour local.

I've been clubbing in a variety of cities this year London, Birmingham, Cambridge and Swindon and paid various overinflated charges to get in, then again the late bars are a bit trendy and drinks are just as dear.  Places like Walkabout are bars but charge to get in.  My clubbing has diminshed largely due to the widespread playing of RnB which just angers me!

The best thing from my perspective is that the normal pub has the possibility of staying open later meaning you're not forced to got to aforementioned trendy venues to stay out later.

Agreed!  Its a shame because I prefer old town (when Im in swindon)  but its not somewhere everyone has a good laugh because people are too worried about posing.

Rnb is ok when your pissed cause you can dance to anything after a few but id much rather go out and listen to indie etc. anyday than dance, garage etc.

Can't remember the name of the club, but I used to love one in Bath, played indie all night long.  Not Po's, not Moles, fuck me what was it called?  All I remember is a load of students used to go in there all the time, there was an italian restaurant opposite the entrance and it had very sweaty walls by kick out time, the club not the restaurant.

We have a good one in Cheltenham called Sub-Tone.  Its got an underground bit which plays indie earlyish then changes to dance, plays indie on middle floor and has a piano bar at the top but the music changes up there depending how busy it is.

We also have a pub/bar called the Retreat which is very upmarket, however plays wicked music - no garage/techno rubbish!

Not the fez in bath that was menat ot be OK, I went to one there recently called Qube, it was pretty nice too, in the cellars under some big hotel I think.

Old Town is generally nicer to drink IMHO, less agro than town in my experience, and places like Longs and McKenzies are nice but as said just too full of men with silly hair.

My mate lives there apart from lots of posh fit birds, and quite a civilised crowd the place is a bit dead, reminds me too much of nights out in other supposedly 'nice places', like Winchester and Cambridge.  IE it's overpriced with too many rugger buggars littering the streets and an abundance of uneccesary 'cool' scarf wearing, and little actual substance.

I voted no, although I could be persuaded.

Reasons for:
*I can drink for longer
*If people stayed out a bit later then I could get more pissed by the end, yet still take advantage of the beer goggle effect.
*Some clubs close at 1am which is a bit crap. 3/4am is more like it, although I think they can do this anyway if they apply for a special licence.

Reasons against:
*I don't think it will decrease violence.
*I think people will get just as pissed as before, just at different times. Won't solve the problem of binge drinking but may help police cope.
*Some places could be dead for the whole night.
*It's going to make me a lot poorer.

Not a chance, I go to clubs to dance/pull more than to drink and this won't change that at all, they'll still have loads of people wanting to do that, just hopefully I'll be able to stay after 3am in some of them.

I think it's about time and if the 11 o clock bollocks is eradicated once and for all then at fucking last.

I'm not sure what it's going to do for nightclubs. You're going to get ones open til 1am/2am/3am/4am and later which means people will leave and go to the bussiest one if nothing is happening. Might end up doing club crawls instead of pub crawls

You can't deny that people will leave one place early to get into another that opens later

We had this conversation at work today. I think its a bad idea and is just greedy.

It will increase under age drinking, violence , rape ,street crime and other issues even pissing in public and the polices job will be made a lot harder.

Title: 24hr drinking.
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, 16:52:51
In Cardiff we already have bars open till 1, 2 or 3 am then people just leave to go to clubs that are open till about 3am.

The student's union pub the taf is open till 1 am and at the moment their club Solus is generally open till about 2 or 3am so what happens is people tend to transfer between them gradually but a lot of people go into the club at like half 11,they don't just stay in the taf just because it's open.

So I don't think it's really going to change anything except that people will be able to move when they want to in some places rather than when they stop serving and clubs should be able to make a bit more money by serving later which may be balanced by slightly less trade earlier on.

A club crawl would get quite expensive if they all charged entrance fees.

I don't think it will increase it tbh. Some people are going to chill and pace themselves more because they have longer to drink. The effect of this would cancel out the people who will just carry on drinking vomit inducing levels.

Yeah but I think those people who do that now will be the ones that do it when it's 24hr. The people that go home fine will still be the same I reckon. It's hardly going to change for the majority of those sorts of people.

I regularly walk the mile home from the city centre at 3am in the morning and I've never seen much trouble even though there's loads of people about and that's in the city which is supposed to be the binge drinking capital of the world.

back in the eighties when the licensing laws changed to allow pubs to open all afternoon, doom and gloom was predicted, increase in crime alcholism, fighting etc. and guess what? that didnt happen. binge drinking is a media myth perpetrated by a lack of news. people in this country have been going out and getting cunted for over 200 years. look back at victorian times and see the amount of alchol related crime was far higher then than now.

in regards to nightclubs, yes some will suffer, the fuckin shit ones, that play shit music rip off door entrance fees and huge drink prices. any semi decent club will survive, people want to go out and dance not just drink.

the hours kept by this nation will shift over a period of time with people going out later and later, but in the long run, we are a nation of drinkers and long may that last.

Aye, there will always be ‘clubbers clubs’ but the likes of the provincial Ritzy complete with sticky carpets will be on the way out.

Like Ben said it’s pretty much been the way in cities for a few years now.  The bars (not pubs) in the likes of Manchester, Liverpool and London all operate off club licenses and usually have a DJ and dance floor in an attempt to cater to the masses.

Some clubs will go the other way changing the style to accommodate the more casual drinker in the day but you’ll always get the clubs people go to dance in playing house, garage, R&B etc…

The danger is a lot of pubs will re-furbish in a sea of chrome and pine to try and keep up.

The danger is a lot of pubs will re-furbish in a sea of chrome and pine to try and keep up.

thats what my local has done but its made it 10 times better even though it looks like a trendy bar at the bottom of town

soapy tit wank.

24 hour drinking: 3 weeks of media frenzy following those that find it a novalty and get into trouble. Then it will alll settle down and I seriously doubt anything will be any better or worse than now.

I dont think I could drink for 24 hours
I'm with Ben on this one, i'm going to give it a reet good go! My original plan was to do 24 pints/shots in 24 hours, but that would be boring, as my usual pace is a pint every 20 minutes (at slowest). Which means that even if i slow my pace, i'll be looking at roughly 40-50 pints/shots over the 24 period

I'm going to have to think about this one.....

i think it would be rude to not try and stay in a pub for 24 hours, just because its an option!

So does anyone have the definitive list of Swindon pubs staying open late?

Sorry everybody is ignoring your plea, Fatbury.

It is:

Gangsters in Havelock Square
Angelos on Fleet Street
Wrag Barn Golf Course

Four 24 hour supermarkets (you can guess which ones)

One all night garage

If you go over the "County Line" (so to speak), Riff's Bar at Greatfield will be staying open late on music nights (Fri/Sat) but admission only until 11pm.

Not a huge take up then. I can't really see why it is going to have much effect. We only have so much to spend on beer ;-)

All it is is another way for the government to make more money, the tax on alcohol and the money it costs the propritor to stay open that late.
