There are better curries in life than a vindaloo..

That said I've never had one - I'll go for taste over hotness so always choose something nicer off the menu

Looking forward to proper Indian food in India in January

You should have a few Vindaloos to get aclimatised. Real indian food will probably be much hotter

It's all about balance as I understand.

Real Indian food comes in three parts - The veg or meat, the hot sauce and the cooling raiti or cream.

You then make your own, put the base in the dish, then the hot sauce (which is nuclear power), then balance it with cooling(!) raiti or cream

Having it pre-mixed as we do in England is not the INdian way...

Although I;m prepared to stand corrected

I had a great curry tonight. The madras was perfect hotness and tasted susan blime. The onion bhajis were even more fantastic. Madras is my favourite curry, only had a couple of vindaloos but it's impossible to taste anything!

where's the raj? we have a raj in ciren - the rajdoot to be exact. we go there most saturdays in the summer (after krikket you see) and i tend to get very bored of curry by the end. i'm a bit of a poof when it comes to curries; never usually go much hotter than a korma or tikka masala. we got a take-away curry at uni a couple of sundays ago and it was rank

Phal is reckoned to be the hottest...as ever its an invention for the British palate...but they wack in the chillies.  I've ordered it, and the waiter has kind of double checked that your happy about getting this arse rattling dish.

I can only cope with pickled chillies and chilli sauce in kebabs now...curries being over priced in my opinion.

According to a bloke i used to work with who used to go to India alot, they dont make their currys hot its just a thing we do here.

Currys in India tend to be milder, the hotter the curry is in India the poorer the people eating it, the spices are used to cover up the taste of ingredients which have been sat in the sun too long.

Don't try meat based currys in India full stop, stick to Veggie. (Unless you like the raging trots!).

There's a restaurant in Brighton that does proper Indian food, and it's very nice. It's quite mild and more to do with the taste rather than just being hot.

You certainly won't find a korma, madras or phal on the menu, that's the crap they've invented to cater for Western tastes. Supply, demand and all that..
