Title: 90's music v today
Post by: Bob's Orange on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, 12:02:16
I am currently listening to Oasis - Definately Maybe and have recently listened to Mansun - Six.

Got me thinking, was the music in the 90's better or worse than the music of today? Personally I think the raw energy of Definately Maybe is still one of the best albums I own.

90's was far better but maybe nostalgia makes me think that?

When Definately Maybe came out i was at secondary school without a care in the world and getting drunk and snogging girls.

If only things were the same now.

I think I prefer my Indie/guitar music from the 90s with the odd exception but the dance music has progressed and expanded with time as the genre has split and developed into different things, meaning many of my favourite dance music or similar is recent too.  Popular music in the 90s was ace though, before the advent of RnB etc.

Late 90's dance was the best ever IMO.

Stuff like Cafe Del Mar by Energy 52 and Binary Finary 1999

I used to like dance music in the 90's as well. Gouryella, Meet her at the love parade, Insomnia (Think this was 90's) all class.

Indeed, but the 90s also saw the development of groups as well as the producers of the odd song, people like orbital, faithless, chemical brothers and prodigy brought qulaity to the masses, enabling slightly less well known groups to go different things with dance and house music as the decade progressed.  i think 99-01 was the peak for club music like gouryella and cafe del mar, so much quality about.

Personally I prefered the early 90's stuff. Prodigy in particular and such tunes as Tony Di Bart- The real thing, Bit of Ratpack. late 90's stuff was too comercialised.

nostelga, it ain't what it used to be.

Britpop was ace. There I've said it. And I stand by it.

i hate dance music. Sample it, loop it, add some drums, make loads of money from it. Oh wait, it's genius really isn't it. Wish I'd thought of it.

Noel was allegedlt a roadie for the inspiral carpets who played at the oasis, and when he joined the band he insisted they changed the name as the original was rubbish. But like many things the name has many stories attached to it, the pub in manchester sounds more likely to me.

I think that today's msuic is better than in ther 90's.

Whilst there was a lot of great music about in the 90's there was also a huge amount of shite and to be honest there is probably slightly less these days.

The main difference though is just the amount of variety these days, genres like drum and bass have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and have grown hugely from the 90's.

UK Hip-hop has also become far more prominent with artists like Dizzee Rascal, Skinnyman, the Streets and Roots Manuva breaking the mainstream.

Overall I think that music now is better than ever, the great thing about music is there is nothing stopping you just listening to music from the past as well as today's stuff.

I played footie with the carpets roadies and my little brother at the back of the Oasis.Whilst they all looked pretty much the same (skinny bowl hair cut lads) im sure Noel played 8) Probably a selective memory thing though.

if we are talking british music then definatly today. the ammount of new talent and so called "groundbreaking" bands that have entered the fray over the last 2 years has been phenominal. a lot of them are not really that groundbreaking i have to say but neither were Oasis and The Verve and so on. id have to say today due to the amount of good new bands there are
